This was such a fun trip with 2 of my sisters! I wish all the family could go back together, rent a big cabin, and chill by the lake for a long time. Do you have big family vacations? Have you ever visited Finland or even known about this tiny country?
Thanks @kristamartin186! I have so much footage, and going through it all is so much fun, and definitely makes me want to go back asap! WE all loved it there so much!
@@LiisaKaario-vx2vg I really would love to visit Hankasalmi too! I think the house mom was born in or was raised in is still there. Wouldn't it be nice to see that?
My grandfather from my father's side is also from Hankasalmi. Never seen him, because he died in the 50's. I've always wanted to know more about my family there. 🙃
Interesting! Check out the book about Hankasalmi - your family may be mentioned in the book too! It's very comprehensive and I'd love to get another one, but I'm having a hard time getting one to Canada.
Beautiful country, beautiful culture. I am astonished though to see that your house has no shutters on the windows. Only glass windows, is it enough to stop a burglar or an intruder. I would not sleep well at night.
Thank you for watching @scolarichris Yes, Finland is a beautiful country for sure! The windows in the cabin did have light curtain that we never actually pulled across the windows :) The bedroom I did use the curtains. We were so remote that really no one was around. I felt very safe while we were there.
Lol so many people want to visit (or even stay), too many if you ask me. 😝 I'm here myself atm (Finn living abroad since a long time) and Helsinki is full of tourists and foreigners.
You're so right! It has changed quite a bit over the years. Back in the early 1980's when my family moved back to Helsinki it was totally different. I've noticed an increase in interest about Finland over the past few years and I'm wondering if the "sauna" and cold plunge craze that's hit north America has anything to do with it! Thank you for commenting!
@@AnneliSchmidt I think the "happiest country in the world" thing is one reason, but what people fail to understand (and why they might get disappointed) is that happiness is highly subjective and depends very much on what your own background is. I mean, if you are from let's say a place where the climate is warm, the food is spicy, the people are super social etc, you might feel unhappy in Finland. BUT if you're ok with cold weather, like pure simple food, are introverted and appreaciate personal space, you might love it. 🤷🏼♀️ I myself belong to the "love it" group but then again I'm Finnish. Lol.
Yes! Very true. When I was in Finland last April, I was expecting cold weather, and we ended up having the most beautiful, almost summer-like weather. I brought all the wrong clothes with me! I live in B.C. Canada and it's extremely expensive here, so I can relate to high prices too. Are you from Finland?
@@AnneliSchmidt No ,I live in india but my brother works as IT consultant in Helsinki. He often complaints about the harsh cold weather. I told him I am not coming to visit you. 😄😄😄
It's more about the costs. Finland is a very expensive country, it might be worth a one off trip, but I can't see it ever being a place where people would visit regularly as a tradition. This coming from a native Finn. If you make friends with locals, it will become more reasonable ofc, but even as a native living abroad, the main reason I do not visit my homeland often is just the costs. Norway and Switzerland are bit similar.
I can see that. I find where I live the cost of living is even higher without all the infrastructure that you have in Finland. So it’s probably relative to where you currently live. Thanks for watching and commenting!! 💕
Yes! It was a very interesting place to stay. We had a look inside the cell they still have on display and the other "cave like" room that was for groups of inmates. Have you ever stayed there?
Katajanokka IS The name of The Cape ! Nice place to stay and take The TRAM - to Central - DOWNTOWN ! Use Helsinki Card - 24 Hours - that takes You to places !
If you want to see more videos about Finland, watch this video next about the cabin we stayed in: bit.ly/46c8ycL
It’s a beautiful montage, thanks for being our videographer and chronicler Anneli 💚🌲. I’m home sick all over again. And planning for the next trip…

I know what you mean! Liisa is thinking we should visit mom's side of the family next in Hankasalmi - I think that's a great idea!
You surely put Hankasalmi on The World Map ! - atleast in Canada
That would be great!

There is very little crime in Finland, especially in remote areas.
I can believe!
Thank you for watching! Why do you say that?
Only forest, a bunch of lakes, and Satan Claus. If you want excitement, go to Paris. If you want empty promises, go to the US. @@AnneliSchmidt
