*pushes glasses up on bridge on nose with index finger, exhales tangibly, breathes sharply back in through nose with slight snoring sound in stereotypical nerd fashion* Ok so the jacks in the middle of the panel look like an ethernet jack for getting onto those sweet, sweet $20/hour cruise ship internets. I *think* the other ones are female BNC connectors, short for "Bayonet Neill-Concelman", the one on the let being 75 Ω and the one on right 50 Ω. it's essentially a coax jack (like you'd see for cable TV at home), typically used for anything RF based - TV, radio, etc. They probably had those in the room so if you brought your own TV / radio, you could hook it up to the ships feed, or their own in-room TVs ran off it. BNC is normally used in "rougher" environments, where stuff will get knocked around / wet / beat up, as they're super resilient and twist-lock, and easy to plug and unplug. Also, I could be totally wrong, but that's what it looks like to me! :)
The ones below look like the normal radio/TV connections that are used in Europe (known officially as IEC 169-2 or Belling-Lee connectors). The one on the right looks a bit misshapen but I guess that can happen in a place like a boat where lots of people use it. They are RF connectors, but they are more for "everyday" use than BNC which is more for "professional" stuff, or that's my impression of the difference between them.
Its standard Helsinki weather. it tend to always be that when i´m there. Well apart from the last time. Granted the time before it was like -2 and snowing, and there was a strike with the bus/tram drivers. So the city was really silent. .
Yes. Too many use "wintershoes" (not good, so those"") what are made in warm weather country. Shoemakers recommend putting better soles on shoes, less slippery, more grip
As a Finn, I love the observation you made about Finland being a place where East meets West! I don't know how much you know about Finnish history but you're completely right - The 600 years under Swedish rule and 108 under Russian rule have both left their mark. Sorry about the icy ground, that's how winters in Southern Finland always are 🥲 Be sure to bring some spike shoes next time!
I dont know if some one commented this already but the buffee is expensive because of the unlimited alcohol so people buy the buffee and get hammered love from finland
Did you see that there actually was a baby in the stroller? I think it would be extremely rare nowadays to leave your baby unattended in the city center, people do that only in their own yards or balconies. Sometimes in central Helsinki you just can't get the stroller inside a restaurant or shop.
As a kid, these large ferries operating between Finland and Sweden were often the highlight of my summer vacation :) Two nights onboard, a day or more in Stockholm. Cousins in Sweden took the same trip to Finland. The ferry shown in the video has a lot of activities on 13 decks. P:S For us locals this kind of wet icy winter weather is the worst, good you enjoyed it :D
You have a knack for making the bleakest, coldest countries look like I’m watching some charming romantic movie! And still you keep the positive vibe shining through with your smiles and the joy you exude as you appreciate the beauty and diversity in every new experience or place you visit.
Thank you for a beautiful video 🙂 Here is the next chapter of insider info (as I have traveled that route a lot of times): 0:50 and 4:05 Silja Line B-class is standard cabin with no window. Good for the price. E-class are cheaper but can be placed in noisy environments (near the engines or the night club). A-class comes with view to either the sea og the pedestrian street inside the ship. 0:53 The ferry actually goes North East at first, heading towards Mariehams at the Åland Islands. It stays within the Swedish archipelago all the way until it reaches the open stretch of water just before Mariehamn. In the middle of the night the ferry make a short stop at Mariehamn (pop. ~10,000) for tax reasons (and it also benefits the connectivity for the Åland Islands). 1:30 The buffet is expensive, but the quality is also high. Can recommend if one have the money to spend. 2:44 Correct pronunciated. 6:25 Pro tip: If you order on the Swedish or Finnish website you will save about 18€. the price of the buffet would be the same though. 7:08 Because of the darkness you miss the absolutely incredible view while sailing through the Swedish archipelago, which the ferry does for the first 4-or-so hours. Some places sailing so close to the shore that one wonders how it is not hitting the cliffs. 7:23 Technically yes. You are in the Baltic Sea, but you are still good within the archipelago. 7:56 The red light are the gate to the loading ramp to one of the many many small yellow ferries, connection the road netword between the islands in the archipelago. In the summer one see those cross in front and behind the cruise ferry. 9:44 Year, it ferry is used as a party boat in the weekends. Usually there isn't much noise in the hallways, but I guess you have been unlucky about your location on the ship. Be glad you didn't choose the E-cabins though 😉 10:10 If to nitpick: This is the actual Baltic Sea. You are following the Southern coast of Finland, Eastbound. 12:17 The Russian Orthodox church 12:23 Heated pool. Not hot spring unfortunately 12:37 They *DO* love their saunas! (The Finnish National Anthem playing in the background, for those who don't know) 15:29 Yes. Can confirm. It is a completely normal thing in the Nordics. We are actually puzzled, how people in the US can live with having such an unsafe environment where one cannot do that. Puts things in perspective. 16:57 The humidity in Finland is unusual. Normally in winter the air is more dry and one doesn't feel the cold as much. Denmark have a high humidity most of the time and normally +1°C (34°F) in Denmark can feel more cold than -10°C (14°F) in Finland. 19:05 Yes. The Finnish mentality and atmosphere is very much its own thing. 19:14 It *IS* East meets West, mixed with the unique flavor the Finns have themselves. Finland have been occupied by both Sweden (West) and Russia (East) and both countries have left their mark on the country. Finland kept the best of both. Ps. Every morning in the summer there is a food market at the water front. The opening hours are more limited in the winter and there are no fresh berries and mushrooms. Keep the bright side up, you are awesome 🙂
I understand that Helsinki is the capital. Stockholm Turku ferry route is just so much more enjoyable especially in summer when you can really appreciate the surrounding archipelago. These days the ferries that operate between Stockholm and Turku are also newer and fancier. Turku is also the old capital of Finland. It is much older than Helsinki and there is so much history there to experience. It takes less than 1,5 hours by train from Turku to Helsinki and the trains run frequently. I am not from Turku but I have lived there previously almost 20 years.
There's something different about Helsinki in a very positive way. I felt really happy when I visited, in ways I cannot describe...the vibes are really good. Don't forget to go to the Regatta cafe and order cinnamon rolls and hot chocolate. Enjoy your time there guys.
I lived in Europe for 15 years and Finland eluded me... I once stood on a dock in Riga, Latvia looking at my ferry that had been cancelled due to weather... I regret not trying again and this video makes me want to jump on a plane right now. Love it ❤
I've spent quite a lot of time watching the Port of Helsinki West Harbour live webcam over the last few years. Seeing the change of seasons is quite something, as they go from summer into winter. Scandinavian countries certainly know how to do coastal shipping right!
I grew up travelling on these ferries/cruising ships every summer. Now I live in the middle of the Baltic sea on the Aland Islands. For many these ferries are part of their life. People from the main lands go on cruises shopping tax free and enjoying themselves. For islanders they are a necessity.
Amazing leaving babies outside in the cold while they shop. Boosts their immunity level, it must work or they wouldnt keep doing it. Fascinating. Btw you captured the cold n foggy atmosphere so well.
I’ve heard another reason for doing this (also in other European countries) when it is cold, that they would need to unwrap the babies if they take them inside (it would be too hot for them not to). This matters in particular if the baby is sleeping as the unwrapping would wake them up.
Tia’s infectious smile and outlook on life, is the backbone of all the videos. The both of you are a perfect match. Sensibility and the joy go hand in hand towards new adventures.
We were just there in the summer and seeing it like this in the winter looks crazy mystical for some reason! The difference in the seasons there is STAGGERING considering we're from Texas and don't really have seasons LOL! Can't wait to see if y'all do anything else in Finland! It's an amazing country and place :)
Indeed, the changes are vast. Summer is short but it is magical and I think the shortness even further contributes to this; you just want to get outside and do all the stuff that it enables and enjoy it to the fullest.
5:25 bottom ones are Belling-Lee radio and tv antenna plugs, used in Europe and Australia, the rest of the world uses F type plugs, we do too on satellite dishes/receivers and cable internet. They either connect to an aerial antenna or cable provider. They use the same connector but they are switched male/female, you can use the same cable to connect a tv or radio, you just need to flip it. The middle looks like rj45/Ethernet plugs, but could be rj11 landline, can't tell and of course the top is schuko.
Happy campers indeed😂 Such a joy to see you both having a good time. I think I completely understand about the feel of being in the different Nordic countries: Finland is so completely different and yet so Nordic. And the Fins are such a quirky weird bunch in the best way. Helsinki is definitely one of my favorite cities in the world. Watching this again from tropical Kuala Lumpur again btw😂
Yes I have really enjoyed watching them, reminiscing about the places that I have been and getting ideas for the places that I havn't. Keep on doing what you are doing, you're my favourite youtubers.@@OnePackWanderers
Such a good video...the best for ages...the ferries have certainly changed since I took a similar one many years ago. If you have the time, I recommend seeing Temppeliaukio Church...it's like no other church I've ever seen...and it's quite stunning.
We love Helsinki, usually we go there to participiate in the Helsinki marathon(we run only 10km though :D). But it's in August so the weather is much better that time :D Anyway, we recommend visiting Suomenlinna. It's a group of small islands with an old fortress on them, very interesting place! You can get there with a short ferry from Helsinki.
Woefully unprepared, our pair stared into the mysterious fog they dared venture out upon the dreary beat, felt unique like art how the bleak turned to shique on cobblestone streets they meet under the lights seeing the sights to show what its like living their life just a slice it seems really nice
Love love love the shot on the pier. Finland in the fog is so dreamy. You made a good decision to go north. I’m enjoying all your northern travels in the winter even more than the southern hemisphere. Can’t wait to see where next.
Welcome to Finland, I lived there for a few years, much further north though. Temperatures there recently were -33C 😁 The ship buffet prices sure seem beyond bargain rates.
Good stuff. I hope you guys get the chance to explore the countries up north in a slower pace, you're missing all the really good stuff. Paradise awaits if you just research and plan differently
Welcome to Finland! Nice video and I like that you're smiling all the time. It makes a good mood to watchers :) RUclips often recommends me foreign tourists' videos about Finland and I oftern watch them too. It's interesting to see my home country through someone else's eyes :)
Thank you it was so nice to follow your trip. I totally agree with others that you captured something magical and an amazing atmosphere in a weather most would find unpleasant. Made me look at it through refreshed eyes as a finn 😊. Hope you update soon with more Finland videos 😊.
Finland, Finland, Finland the place that I want to be. You're so near to Russia. So far away from Japan. Quite a long way from Cairo. Lots of miles from Vietnam... Thanks for the free air-con in 45degC Perth 🙃
Hi guys, I worked on prawn trawlers for 8 years off the Queensland coast and I always had a packet of this stuff called Stay Calm it's either caffeine based or ginger based hope this helps👍Love you guys take care🇦🇺
Thanks again guys for including us in your Scandinavian Winter journey and I must say I admire your courage considering where you come from :) I visited Helsinki and Finland whilst on a cruise in September got to see it in all it's glory. Seeing at this time of year is certainly an experience I'll won't be doing, so thank you !! ..LOL Cheers and Happy Trails :)
I remember backpacking in Finland years ago and going to harbour on my 1st morning there and going do to old market building, where i was greeted to food shop selling Raindeer-Kababs!!
Wonderful vlog. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and seeing you both, of course! I always have a smile on my face when I see how much fun you are having. Please look after yourselves though - I know Tia has been unwell - but eating some fruit and veggies will help you keep well. I felt a bit worried when I saw your faces. Anyway, take care and love from Australia❤❤
one aspect of ferry boarding, cruising, and disembarking i missed here was the crowds. the sense you are all huddled together like sardines in a can. sooo many stories on lives of those passengers. mmmaybe everyone was all tucked in their rooms staying warm, idk.
15:35 yep can confirm. sometimes it's for practical reasons cos many cafes and shops wont have enough room for big strollers, so people will just bring the baby inside and leave the stroller or carriage outside. but if the baby is sleeping when you get there, most will let them sleep and just leave a monitor outside so they know if the baby wakes up and starts crying and go bring them inside.
A travel trip for sea sickness.. try and stand or sit in fresh air with a view of the horizon for a while, I find a window in a cabin is the key to avoiding sea sickness..good luck on the trans Atlantic trip try and get that window 😊
Seeing the beaty in such dreadful weather is a great quality to have. Wet and icy is generally not that great, and feels a lot colder than dry and cold.
Oops, you happened to choose a bad time to take a cruise hehe. Those were finnish university students onboard with you guys. You can spot them by their colorful overalls in the video when you exit the ship. Industrial engineering cruise for the technical university students I believe, based on the colors of their overalls and what I can read on them. Student overalls/boilersuits are an interesting and a prominent part of student culture here in finland, in some universities/fields in sweden also!
About children sleeping outside... They are dressed warm, so its the air they breathe. They sleep better and it also give them immunity. During the warmer seasons, same thing, but less clothes.
The air outside isn't really challenging for the immune system. But cool air is easier to breathe and babies seem to sleep better outside. Of course it requires that the neighborhood isn't too noisy. People know, mostly anyhow, how to dress for the weather and also babies so coldness itself isn't as problematic as going indoors and having to undress the baby. Babies aren't as good at sweating and controlling their temperature as adults are.
Cruises are usually not my thing but lookin at two of my most wonderful person on this planet , i probably might changed my mind , what a time to be alive , Thank you
I’ve been in Copenhagen since last November and it fascinated me that they leave their babies and dogs outside stores while they shop. Thanks for the video!
I need to get from Stockholm to Helsinki for a tour in a few months, and I was just going to book a flight but I am thinking of booking this. Even with higher cabin level, I think we still come out ahead vs 2x~$130 for the flight plus an extra night's hotel in Stockholm pre-flight. I know food is extra on the ferry but we'd still be buying it regardless of where we were staying. And this seems a bit more scenic and entertaining than sitting in airports!
I mean there are like handful of baby snatchers in the nordic countries combined. They can't carry more than 4 at a time, so likely your baby is safe outside.
I remember sailing from Victoria to Tasmania at night, and the Bass Strait was like glass, it was incredibly beautiful. Bass Strait can be one of the roughest stretches of water in the world. p.s. it was rough on the way back. Just being able to experience the joy of these new beautiful locations, and to be able to do it with the person you love, must be truly wonderful.
In Finland we sometimes get warnings like "walkways are dangerous, take care" alongside the weather report. Here you see why... so slippery! Most slippery areas get rough sand thrown on them by machines designed for it, and in spring it's all collected, washed (because of oil leaks and such) and reused the next year, at least in my city. It makes the spring air dusty for a bit if it gets windy, but reusing the same sand lessens the amount of dust in it. Sprained legs and even broken hips still happen though.
Someone in the comments mentioned, "missing crowds" when embarking and disembarking this ferry. I would say that crowds are more common than not, and should be expected; depending on time of boarding, weekday, and time of year. This, I think, was unusually void of crowds. While a very important transport route for cargo carrying trucks(semis), these particular "ferries" lean more towards the cruise side of things. Tickets can be very cheep, as the revenue comes from selling food, and of course drink. There is also a special legal accomodation for these ferries to sell tax-free goods (alcohol, candy, perfume, etc). As noted in the video, one can expect, depending on weekday, a lot of young people partying hard and long. It is not uncommon for a group of 18 year old (I suppose I am old enough now to say) kids, to go for a share in a four bunk cabin, and do a "booze cruises" on these ships. 10 hour party going out, sleep for 6 in port, and party another 8 going back, feel terrible for a couple of days, recouperating, and doing one's best to forget the experience, so you can do it again. Aah... being young, eh? What is also missed in this video, due to time of year, is the shere beauty of the archipelagoes, through which these ferries/cruises sail. The Stockholm archipelago is extra ordinary, on par with(?) the fjords of Norway. Standing on deck as the ship sails through on a warm summers day... recommended. The Helsinki archipelago is as beautiful, while not as plentiful.
I'm from Pennsylvania, my mom put all of us outside in a pram for a good part of the day most days. Not in front of restaurants hut it is not unheard of in the US.
Silja Serenade was my first boatride on sea when I was 12, back in 2002. Have been to bigger ships since, but they feel smaller as Serenade has this big promenade street in the middle and feels open and big. Many of the ships on baltic sea to tallinn and stockholm feel a bit cramped when you can't feel the size when the floor height stays the same.

Ok so the jacks in the middle of the panel look like an ethernet jack for getting onto those sweet, sweet $20/hour cruise ship internets.

@@nelltheretrogamer Well, the boat has been built in 1990
Some cabins have TVs mounted up on that wall, so i believe the power, cat and rj45 connectors up on the wall are for them.
I'm impressed. You made Helsinki at it's most miserable weather to look beautiful and romantic.

Simply a matter of perspective

Ay welcome here Finland
Silja Serenade (with its sister ship) was the worlds first with a promenade/shopping "street" in the middle. Built 1990 in Finland.
And then Royal Caribbean hired their designer and came up with the royal promenade their ships have had since Voyager of the seas.
This ice rink weather is called in Finnish pääkallokeli, ie. skull weather. Lots of broken hips and femurs filling emergency rooms.

So nice seeing a little bit of Finland - it seems to have a bit of a magical feel about it!
Buffe on these ships is well worth the money, includes the wine and beer too.
Can't wait for you guys' Norway trip. Can't wait for you guys to behold all the fjords.
Welcome to Finland! Nice video and I like that you're smiling all the time. It makes a good mood to watchers :)
RUclips often recommends me foreign tourists' videos about Finland and I oftern watch them too.
Look like you got here when the weather was warm, the one week when it was below freezing, rest of the winters been nuts, -15 to - 30 c in helsinki
The night video scenes were awesome. Love the mood!
These foggy shots of Helsinki are incredible. Cinematic stuff.
Love to see you enjoying yourselves, keep well & safe ❤
There is a sayin in swden/finnland that goes If you dont think you can be drunk on water... you haven't been on a finnish ferryline :)
What makes Finland different? It's the time change. Definitely.
I was thinking exactly the same thing 😂🇭🇲🐨
In case you were wondering Class C cabins are identical to B cabins but are beneath the waterline.
We love seeing how you explore different countries! Great video!
one aspect of ferry boarding, cruising, and disembarking i missed here was the crowds. the sense you are all huddled together like sardines in a can. sooo many stories on lives of those passengers. mmmaybe everyone was all tucked in their rooms staying warm, idk.
Tervetuloa to our city!!
Seeing the beaty in such dreadful weather is a great quality to have. Wet and icy is generally not that great, and feels a lot colder than dry and cold.
I am so "jealous" of the tropical weather you encounter in Helsinki ..LOL 😂😂😂 ... sending sun block cream soon!
Awesome! Hopefully you're also going to Norway. I've recently done a roadtrip through Lofoten Islands and it was amazing. Highly recommend.
What a lovely video. Helsinki is exactly where east meets west. Especially in architecture.
I really like Finnish winter but I don't like that weather so I'm happy that you enjoyed it and made it seem so nice
Grateful your sea voyage was on calm waters, loved the Tia crab walk....it's good !
Just found your YT-channel, love your videos, you are such a humble couple! 😀❤
Greetings from Sweden!🙂
Oh yey, Finland!! My home country! So glad you made it to Helsinki 🥰🥹
Do the same trip during summer and then lets talk about ’like a dream’ ♥️
The air outside isn't really challenging for the immune system. But cool air is easier to breathe and babies seem to sleep better outside. Of course it requires that the neighborhood isn't too noisy. People know, mostly anyhow, how to dress for the weather and also babies so coldness itself isn't as problematic as going indoors and having to undress the baby. Babies aren't as good at sweating and controlling their temperature as adults are.
Cruises are usually not my thing but lookin at two of my most wonderful person on this planet , i probably might changed my mind , what a time to be alive , Thank you
Great video! Made me subscribe. Welcome to Finland!
Thank you 😊
I’ve been in Copenhagen since last November and it fascinated me that they leave their babies and dogs outside stores while they shop. Thanks for the video!
Hope the dogs have booties and jackets on.
Good point. Can't snatch every baby, there are too many!
I was very impressed with your correct pronounciation of Silja and sauna.
A smooth Bass Strait crossing? - unheard of!
@@carokat1111 I know right, It was amazing
In Finland we sometimes get warnings like "walkways are dangerous, take care" alongside the weather report. Here you see why... so slippery! Most slippery areas get rough sand thrown on them by machines designed for it, and in spring it's all collected, washed (because of oil leaks and such) and reused the next year, at least in my city. It makes the spring air dusty for a bit if it gets windy, but reusing the same sand lessens the amount of dust in it. Sprained legs and even broken hips still happen though.
Glad you enjoyed your time here
It was much warmer day than the previous weeks. That melted tons of snow, and that's why it was so foggy.
Nice, I live in Mariehamn, on the Åland islands that you passed when going to Helsinki.
Lovely couple and wonderful video, i enjoyed watching the video. Enjoy your awesome travels. Well-made and super fun video.
Also those things on the ferry in your room you didn´t know what they were, they are for TV and like tv box and stuff meant.
Amazing filmography and shots guys! Keep it up, love watching every ep
You could have pulled the two beds together. You can moved the bed you shared next to the Pullman.
Love you guys. You're so down to earth
Someone in the comments mentioned, "missing crowds" when embarking and disembarking this ferry. I would say that crowds are more common
than not, and should be expected; depending on time of boarding, weekday, and time of year. This, I think, was unusually void of crowds.
While a very important transport route for cargo carrying trucks(semis), these particular "ferries" lean more towards the cruise side of things.
Tickets can be very cheep, as the revenue comes from selling food, and of course drink. There is also a special legal accomodation for these
ferries to sell tax-free goods (alcohol, candy, perfume, etc).
As noted in the video, one can expect, depending on weekday, a lot of young people partying hard and long. It is not uncommon for a group of
18 year old (I suppose I am old enough now to say) kids, to go for a share in a four bunk cabin, and do a "booze cruises" on these ships.
10 hour party going out, sleep for 6 in port, and party another 8 going back, feel terrible for a couple of days, recouperating, and doing one's best to
forget the experience, so you can do it again. Aah... being young, eh?
