We got our churches very mixed up. The church in the video is a Lutheran church. The Orthodox one is red.
In Finland, 68.7% are Lutheran and only 1.1% are Orthodox, so it is reasonable to assume that you will find mostly Lutheran churches in a large part of the country.
The polar plunge really is about the heat afterwards. It is especially good for those with chronic pains since it pumps the body's own painkillers and lower inflammation. The actual studied health benefits of Sauna is about "heat shock proteins". Cells start to produce those when you are subjected to very high heat, not enough to burn but enough to trigger this mechanism. Heat shock proteins are good for ex at straightening proteins that have curled on themselves, which is usually what happens when you get heat damage: proteins start to cook and curl. Protein that is like a ball of string does not do its job. So, those heat shock proteins repair cell damage, and the cells are better prepared for further heat shock, starting to produce heat shock proteins more easily. They do also repair other damage, which is where the health benefits come.
It is the only research and peer reviewed health effect. There can be more but we don't yet really know. It lowers stress and inflammation but those are so temporary that it is difficult to say how much it helps.. but, few hours of having less stress and inflammation isn't bad for us..
All the five Nordic countries are mostly Lutheran Protestant. Both the Orthodox church and Catholic church are tiny in Finland.
Oh well not to worry 😁
It’s the church from Darude’s Sandstorm film clip
It's the Helsinki Cathedral. The architecture style around the Senate square is called empire. It's European, post Napoleonic era neoclassical architecture style.
You said you'd like to revisit when the days are longer. I strongly recommend the north in the summer when the day literally does not end at all.
Indeed. And go all the way to north, where the trees end. Kilpisjärvi is amazing. Easy to go cross to norway's fjords from there too.
Be prepared for the mosquitoes though.
@@wanhapatuI was going to come and mention the mozzies and midges that are rampant in the north in the summer.
@@laulutar Not necessarily. It very much depends on how wet the spring and early summer have been. I've been to family reunions in the north (I'm from there, on the Swedish side though, but not far from the border with Finland), playing football in broad daylight at 2am, and not a flying insect in sight.
Oh yes, as a Finn, the summer is definitely my favorite time and Finland during summer is the best place to be!
A lot of us Finns are saying you should come back in the summer, and I agree... January can be pretty bleak. I hope you enjoyed it here though! Would love the postcard ;) I'm enjoying watching your travels! 😊
Yep, Aussies are still watching your travels! We’re a very loyal lot! Also looking forward to your return some time! Much love from Down Under. 🇦🇺🥰🥰. It’s summer here but you’re making me feel cold! LOL!
Yes, we are
We are. Aussie Aussie Aussie!
Yup.. another Aussie here. Love your videos
It's a gift for me. Born in Finland and moved to Aus when 12. Now middle aged. Worlds colliding.
❤❤❤
I can’t believe Tia stood in the cold after coming out of the water to film Chevyo taking the plunge! To me, that seems like it would be shivering!
Actually you usually feel warm for couple of minutes after getting out from cold water. It feels very good and I think thats the main reason why people do it
Me too!!
That's the best part. After leaving the water, the air and even the wind feel nice and warm. It's a really euphoric feeling 🙃
lol, they obviously went back into the sauna first
I actually cried laughing when you went swimming in the sea. Like even Finns usually just do a quick dip unless they're hobbyists and you went for a swim as first timer tourists 😂 Like yeah, that's crazy even by Finnish standards
Not grazy in finnish standards. I am finn and I go naked to lake and swim halfaway of it in freezing weather. 5 kilometers. That is where you need iron balls and finnish SISU! Perkele
Not even crazy. Every morning I swim to work in the freezing water(about 8.6271 km)
Trust me: it was crazy. Some Finns are crazy.
It’s been a while since you posted here or on Insta. Hope you are both well
That clarity that you speak of, after exiting the sauna, is exactly why we/they do it :)
The 'herb' Dill always goes well with fish
Dill is not a 'Spice' guys, it is a 'Herb', just like Parsley and Coriander.
😂😂😂 ya dill!!
Actually trip to Estonia even as a Finn was a good choice. In winter time all Lapland is going ballistic with prices. Sled rides etc are really expensive. Estonia is nice. It's our brother nation. Good people, good food and nice sight seeing. I like to travel there 2-4 times a year.
After you finish shower you feel fresh. After you finish sauna and cold water dip you feel reborn. But yeah the feeling for me at least comes after I'm finished
As finnish person I don't feel fresh after shower. I need sauna for fresh feeling.
My man admired the pun
Of course Aussies are still watching your adventures! Loved the pool plunge guys! Respect! But that was not a pie 😂
Agreed! Pie is a very interesting word for what that was, I think something was lost in translation. It was tasty but not a pie 😅
@@OnePackWanderers it's actually a word for word translation, maybe we Finns are a bit more liberal with the term 🤣
130bpm? Chill hon.
Yeah mate that's not a pie
Yea the Aussies are still watching and it's 111F in Perth today , that cold water looks very appealing to us 😂😂
Watching from Adelaide
if your gonna come back to finland i really recommend Turku as a most beautiful city in the southern Finland, or lapland.. In lapland the sun never goes down during the summertime. Anyways where ever you go in here, Finland is as its best during summer.
Fun fact, the steps Tia ran up to is where they filmed the music video to Darude - Sandstorm
Swimming in Allas Sea Pool in Helsinki has been quite popular among travelling RUclipsrs lately :)
You MUST come again to Helsinki in summer. It feels like another place when it's warm and it's so green everywhere.
I loved the "Tia-cam" tour of the ferry, it was so sweet! The security guard was probably making sure their cutlery was locked away. 😆
😂😂😂
You made that plunge pool look easy… I would have been screaming 😅. Nice to see Cheveyo in an uncomfortable situation for a change & Tia being the encouragement 😆. Your both still amazing 🤍
Yeah I wasn't game to try it, so props to Tia & Cheveyo 👍
Nice to see a shout out to the Australian viewers🥧
nice to see you enjoyed Finland. If you decide to come back one day, definately do it in summer (july). It's so much better than winter. Finnish (or nordic in general) summers are amazing
Fanciest ferries makes sense, the biggest most luxurious cruise ships in the world have been made in Finland for some time now and probably atleast some of those ferries you used (not sure)
You're right. Both the Stockholm-Helsinki and Helsinki-Tallinn ferries were built here in Finland. The first one is already 34 years old and the latter was built as recently as 2022.
And when it comes to shipbuilding in Finland the world's largest cruise ship the Icon of the seas was finished late last year and her sister ship is already being built in Turku Finland.
Even the new Biggest one in the world!
Those mega ships don't travel from Helsinki, but the Helsinki port is the busiest passenger port in the world. Which is really surprising given that it's a fairly small country. But it's faster to travel by sea between Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn than by land and many do it just as a work commute or for weekend trips. So the ferries are fancy because A. they get a lot of use B. we have lots of shipbuilding experience.
I agree that the weather at home is not the best in the winter, that is why I am watching from Africa :) Finland is the best country in the world in the summers so I hope you come back, I know I am.
Got really excited when you mentioned “Australian’s” and the meat pies 🥧
Love watching you guys!
Stay safe 😊
Another Aussie here! Love your videos so much, you've inspired me to travel more
"Baby it's cold outside." Tia has a nice voice...how about a duet?!
That postcard is awesome
Come back mid summer and experience Helsinki super quiet, when everybody is at their cottages :)
Anyways, glad you stopped by and thank you for the video!
I loved watching that from Australia , I've been watching for about a year now and have never been disappointed.
Youre such an amazing cute couple and you really care about each other, safe travels ❤
Yes, still watching from Perth
Another Aussie here. Gosh it's cold up there. That ferry looks unreal. My husband and I are travelling in Tasmania now. You should come back and do this. Tassie is on another level of travel. You will love it.
Definitely still watching and smiling at your videos from Australia. Bit warmer here. Those ferries look wonderful. Loved this series as much as all you videos. Stay safe and warm you crazy kids. 😂
You guys are just the best, down to earth and a joy to watch. You dont make out you are better than others and that is really important. Just keep being the cool people you are and you will go far. If you come back to Aussie i would not hesitate to open my door to you both and feed and give you a bed free of charge. Take care and stay safe in your travels. Cheers from Australia ❤😊👍☕🥧
Sauna and swimming in the ocean is such a good feeling. There is a trend in Scandinavia now where most towns have public saunas with sea access (where possible).
And it is so invigorating to sit in the sauna and dip in the cold ocean (repeat as neccessary) and the relaxed feeling one get afterward is soo good.
You guys were lucky to experience really cold water. Where I live, above the arctic circle, the water temps are usually no colder than 6-8C in the winter.
I stumbled upon your channel last year. One of the best things that happened to me in 2023. Honestly you guys are my favourite travelling vlog couple by far. Good job! Thank you.
As a fellow person with anxiety, I truly felt that anxious tour! Loved it, thank you for doing that for us haha
Ice dipping/swimming is best when you just float around usually just for a minute or two and slow your heartrate down by focusing on breathing. It really relaxes your body and mind.
Just to ease your anxiety, Tia. People are not looking at you because you're weird or because of your criminal history (LOL). It's because you are so cute 🙂
I agree.
So cute. That’s why nobody suspects that you’re a hardened criminal until it’s too late.
@@larshohmuth4035 I never knew until now that she was a hardened criminal. I don't think anyone else knows though.
I had no clue about her criminal ways until she stole my heart 😂
Always enjoy your videos. Bringing back memories of these areas when we did a Baltic cruise back in 2019. Though it was summer then 😂
Thanks for sharing and safe travels from The Land Down Under, keep warm
Great job with that postcard!
The anxiety while doing the boat review was so real.
I really hope you end up having a great time in Tallinn. It’s a hidden gem in Europe that everyone really needs to visit. The Old Town is fantastic. Peace from 🏴
Great video guys. Greeting from Sydney.
Loving these videos!
Tia you did so freaking well!!! Seriously can’t imagine the anxiety you were going through but you committed and fulfilled the mission! I hope you are as proud of yourself as we all are. Sending you love xoxoxo ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for all your lovely videos !
Thanks for braving the tour!
always feel nice & calm after watching your vids! thx guys!
Glad you enjoyed your time here!
Of course us Aussies are still watching you! You passed the test - we’ve adopted you as our own now 😉😉😘😘😂😂
Loving following your travels! Best wishes from NZ
Really loved this video. It’s great to see all the different sides of your travels from seeing the sites to working out the budget and dealing with the anxiety of filming around strangers. Thank you for sharing it all with us and taking us on an authentic journey with you 💚
We recently found your channel, and have been watching alot since! Love from Denmark - enjoy your further travel to Estonia
3:00 The temperature of the water that you throw on the rocks in sauna really doesn't matter. Some use warm or even hot water to prolong the life of the rocks but other than that, it doesn't make any difference. All the water that hits the stones will boil and cause more steam into the room. And if you actually measure the sauna room temperature before and after throwing the water on rocks (called "löyly") with a highly accurate equipment, you'd find that the room temperature slightly decreases! However, the additional steam in the air will prevent your skin from cooling down normally which causes the air to feel super hot.
I personally like it when sauna is about 70 °C and 70 %RH which is really moist and feels pretty hot.
Got my postcard today and I love it! Enjoy your adventures!
I particularly enjoy all the comments from people who have a connection with the places you visit!
The postcard looks absolutely wonderful!
The dip in the pool…crazy
Loving your series ❤
Love watching your videos. I’m so glad you are still traveling and living the dream.
Love these finland videos
I started watching you guys when you came to Perth, my home, and haven’t stopped watching!! Getting ideas on where to travel in Winter in Europe.
That postcard is gorgeous!
Great video. Love the postcard! Get warm, guys!
You folks are adorable! Thanks for taking me along on your adventures.
Those ferries really are fancy, thanks for the tour Tia. Your post card drawings are beautiful ❤
Best opening to a vlog ever! 🌊🌊🌊
Ha, this was really such a nice video. So genuine observation and much love included. Love the planet!
Wow that’s such a beautiful postcard! I’m new to the channel and love all the videos so far! The Nordic countries are by far the best places to visit! ❤ can’t wait for the next one!
Best tour of a ferry I've ever seen Tia. ^^
I've just joined your journey since the Copenhagen vlog & then i went back & started binge watching from Corfu. So the last couple of days i've watched Cheveyo with short hair & you guys travelling mostly Europe, Thailand & Vietnam in a sunny hot climate. I think it's safe to say that you both handle heat better than the cold )). You're gonna have a blast looking back on some of these old videos years from now when your done travelling. Safe journey & all the best from CPH Denmark ❤.
That was so fun to watch, thanks guys. Ooooh postcard hehe
Can’t wait to see your experience in Estonia as we are also planning a weekend break in a few days. Cheers from Berlin.
That ferry is amazing!!! well done on the tour :-)
Guys you are really insane! Going into the cold water after the Sauna! Deepest respect! Love to see you exploring the northern parts of Europe 🎉
The ferries to Sweden, Estonia, Germany are a big thing in Finland and have many functions, Finland is an island basically. The big ferries carry people, cars, cargo, and many hop on board just for entertainment. The competition between companies is fierce, so you can often find good prices and the ferries are comfortable.
Yes, a lot of us Aussies are watching. Been following you two through lockdown and now addicted.
Great video..thanks
Appreciate how you're upfront about what you do & don't particularly like in each destination 🙂 I've lived in Denmark & I agree about the rye bread. Interesting video 👍
I'm from Adelaide, South Australia and enjoyed seeing around Helsinki and your ferry trip. It brings back memories of my visit there and the ferry trip many years ago. I also went to Copenhagen on the same trip and Tia's colourful postcard also makes me think of my time there. It's the best so far Tia!
It’s so interesting you can identify your heart is slowing down when suddenly submerged in cold water. The sudden cold actually can actually activate your parasympathetic nervous system and that slows down your heart! In fact, we call dunking the face in ice water a ‘vagal maneuver’ to slow down the heart when it’s in an abnormally fast rhythm.
What an amazing adventure you're having! I struggle enough getting into a normal cold pool on a warm day let alone freezing cold water!
That polar plunge looked so cooooooold! You had a cold day and went into a cafe to drink hot drinks and warm up. I had a hot day walking around Bangkok and went into a cafe to drink cold drinks and cool down.
This was a pleasant video to watch as a Finn. 😊 I used to live in Helsinki, and enjoyed strolling around the center regularly.
Grateful to see you survived the cold plunge, and yes I grimaced at 1:40 when the "boys" hit the cold water, grateful your camera gear can operate so well in such a range of temperatures, if your cold come back to Aussie, it's summer in Perth and 41C today, we even have bushfires to keep you warm, safe travels, love and light from Perth Australia ( and a little added note: I love the postcard of Copenhagen, please put me in the random draw, cheers Trevor )
Super impressed with you guys doing the Cold Plunge!
I know what that's like, as I swim in the SF Bay during the winter with no wetsuit, Brrrrisk!
What a lovely couple you are. Just saw your video / traveled with you through Australia and of course you've just been also here in Finland ! Take care and enjoy your travels ❤
Yes, definitely a beautiful postcard
Copenhagen is a beautiful city and your postcard represents it well. I would love to find that in my mailbox! Love your travels of Scandinavia too!
Congrats to both of you on making the polar plunge.Maybe you’re ready to do the polar plunge into Lake Michigan. Not sure about this meat pie. Yum Yum salmon and potato soup. I could eat that every wk. Looks like an outstanding boat. Loved hearing Tia try to sing 1 of the songs from Elf. while waiting for your Uber. Absolutely Loved It
Definitely the best postcard yet. I want one!
Wow I was nearly crying with laughter when you got in the water.
I appreciate how cold you must feel, I experienced extreme cold in Daqing in Northern China, which gets down to minus 26c. Thank goodness there was no wind. . Makes your lungs ache . That’s why i like to live in Queensland , Australia. Great videos as usual. Brings your humour and great outlook on life to the front. Stay safe
~6min mark, yes it actually is the donut dough without that much of sugar :D
Loving all your video travel vlogs, especially the places we have been ourselves in northern Europe. Also the Australian ones.
Love your latest postcard of Copenhagen, Tia.
From Jeff and Agnes in Melbourne.
Thanks for another thoroughly enjoyable video 😘
Hello from summery Australia! The salmon soup looks delicious! The ferry looks like it's a gigantic floating duty free shop/food court. I guess they have captive customers for the two hours.
I always thought the Sauna, Cold plunge thing was crazy and do not think I would try it. Love the video. Keep on traveling 😁
Job well done Tia on the Ferry review. I don't have anxiety and don't think I could've walked around a ferry seemingly talking to myself. You did great👏
That salmon soup looked dill-licious!
Love the video! You should definitely come back during summer!
That was really cool you did the cold dip :D good job.
The curch is the curch from the meme song darude - sandstorm btw.
Sitting here watching this in humid sweaty conditions and your dip in the pool refreshed me and enjoy as usual the different food each place presents. Compared to the Aussie pie here, that definitely was more a burger than a pie of sorts. Stay warm ….
Not only their traditions, but the ppl too! Rgds from Denmark! lol
