  • En route to the UK from Singapore, we had about 24 hours in Helsinki, Finland. This is quite a popular stop-over city between Asia and Europe and today we set out to explore as much of the Finnish capital as possible!
    We visited the beautifully manicured Esplanade Park, Market Square & Old Market Hall, Suomenlinna Island and got to try some of the amazing local foods. We hope you enjoy!

    The salmon soup is very traditional and people do it eat lots. I think over summer its more for the tourists at the big market as its hot out. I make mine often over the fall and winter.

      Just be sure to get finnish salmon (rainbow trout actually) and not norwegian hormone salmon, which is not actually healthy (shitstorm incoming)

    Ah a good hand-made Karelian pie is amazing but I always eat it with egg spread on top❤️

      We wished we tried it with the egg spread 😫 Was pretty good as is though. I think our favourite was the fresh smoked salmon on the rye bread - incredible! 🙌🏼

    hurts to see every time when tourists eat karelian pies plain without toppings. it's supposed to have egg butter on top of it but you can also put anything you like on it. just don't wonder why it tastes bland without

    • @KristyandSteve
      @KristyandSteve  10 месяцев назад

      We would have loved to put the egg butter or something on top but unfortunately it was just a quick grab and go from the pastry section at the supermarket and as Steve said, he couldn't find any. We both liked it as is though, great snack! 👌🏽

      Also, the ones you get from markets aren’t the real Karelian pies. They are not even allowed to use that name, it can only be called ricepie. You can get the real ones from limited places.

      I don't know bro, I personally like karelian pies more when they have nothing on them. I know I'm a rare case though

      Karelian pies/rice pies do go well with cheese, ham and cucumbers too. If you dont have egg butter ofcourse.

    Fazer probably is the most loved local brand in Finland, known for their tradiotional milk chocolate especially. The roots of the company are in Switzerland/Germany originally, same with the big department store Stockmann in Helsinki city center. Some nitpicking: You didn't eat a blueberry pie but bilberry pie 😁 The wild bilberries (like all wild berries) are common in Finland, the cultivated blueberries are still rare here. The bilberries are smaller, dark inside too and has a stronger taste.

    • @KristyandSteve
      @KristyandSteve  10 месяцев назад +3

      We LOVED the Fazer chocolate and ate so much of it in the short time we were in Helsinki. Reminds us of the Nestle brand we have back in Australia, so good!
      Thanks for letting us know about the bilberrie pie to, we're glad we were able sample it. You're lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, we really liked Helsinki (freshest air and best tasting water ever!) 🥰

    • @Serpentiis
      @Serpentiis 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah bilberry grows wild here and you can, with "some" work for your back, gather 10 litres in a day from some good spot. That's great vitamins for winter when you freeze them up and eat a bunch with every morning yogurt or such.

    • @Serpentiis
      @Serpentiis 9 месяцев назад

      Fazer has like 20 (dunno?) different variants on their chocolate as well, some better, some worse (all foreigners should try Turkinpippuri salmiakki one, heheh..) with main competitor Marabou from Sweden. I think base chocolate with Fazer is better but Marabou has some great variants, that are a bit better than Fazer ones. Matter of tastes. In any case i haven't tasted better chocolate than in Finland/Sweden except Switzerland anywhere, IMO. (some belgian and italian ones are good too).

    The tippaleipä you can actually get only around first of May. We have several delicacies that connect to a certain festivity (like in America you'd have a Thanksgiving turkey). Dunno really how it works in Australia?

    • @KristyandSteve
      @KristyandSteve  9 месяцев назад

      Australia we have ANZAC day, a commemorative holiday to honour Australia and New Zealand victims of war - google "ANZAC cookie" alot of Aussies eat these around this time of year (and also throughout, but mainly on ANZAC day), also pavlova for a Christmas Day dessert is a popular tradition.
      Thanks for your comment 😊

      Lene is Danish and says that the Salmon on rye with dill has a base sauce of Mayo, herbs and pickles. Not just cream cheese.
      She always puts cream cheese on black bread, before the salmon.

    Actually the travel tickets you bought just before going to Suomenlinna are not valid when going to the airport because airport is in the C-zone. You bought AB-zone ticket, which is 9 e per person. To the airport you need to buy the ABC-zone ticket, which is 11 e per person. The airport is situated in the city of Vantaa, not in the city of Helsinki. The airport company uses the wrong name. But i hope the ticket inspector didn`t come to check your tickets in the airport train😀

    • @KristyandSteve
      @KristyandSteve  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Jani! Yes, you're correct and we did realise this once we arrived at the airport and saw we needed to purchase zone C also 🙈 Luckily our tickets were not checked! Thanks for the correction and making others aware (if they aren't already) when they read your comment - it's very helpful! 🙏

    • @KristyandSteve
      @KristyandSteve  10 месяцев назад +3

      Every new country/city that we visit, we always check the drone laws as they vary so much. Helsinki is an easy city to abide by the rules as there are plenty of signs around with the drone laws. The great thing about modern drones, is they also advise the operator, where you can and can’t fly. Thanks for watching! 😀
