Thanks for taking us along with you, back to the 90’s and maybe part of the 80’s, to this old retro Kmart ! I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and I miss those days so much. Especially now , with all the evil and stress going on all around us, I’m drawn to listening to music from those decades, and watching shows and movies from those days. Makes me feel nostalgic, but truthfully it also makes me a bit sad, because the world as we know now, is NOTHING like it was then ! Not even close. So each time you find one of these “treasures”, it’s almost like seeing an old friend ! That may sound goofy, but I don’t care. It’s the truth. Thanks for taking us back in time, to this old school Kmart, from my growing up years. Even listening to the old Kmart commercial at the end, brought back fond memories !
This Kmart opened in 1974 and closed in 1992. It relocated the Ashtabula Town Square Mall in 1992 and became a Super Kmart around 2000. It looks like a business called Domino Logistics occupied the building after Kmart.
Since you are from the area, do you know if it has ever been repurposed into anything else at some point, or did it just stay abandoned for over 3 decades? I am now super curious.
This is Saybrook Township, not Ashtabula. But I went to that Kmart often and it was never a really busy store, just average and only because the area had some industry back in the day. Across the street, behind the Highway Patrol station, that plaza there (Crossroads Plaza) once held an A&P Grocery store, years later it became a TOPS grocery and some smaller stores. Around 2007, the plaza was sold and the owner rented it out to people who used it for auctions, discount household items and basically selling junk, last year most everything there closed up and now the building will sit until it's demolished. Next to the Highway Patrol station, there was also a McDonald's, which closed around 1990 or so. On that note, down the road about 2 miles there was also another plaza called Nichol's Plaza, which held Nichol's department store, which was before Kmart became popular, but basically the same thing. That plaza had a movie theater and other small shops. Nichol's closed around 1989 and The movie theater closed around 2009 or so, the last remaining shop in that plaza was a massage parlor, which was closed for obvious reasons. That entire plaza is now piles of rubble. All of these abandoned stores, plazas and such went downhill after NAFTA was signed, almost overnight.
My parents and I went shopping there all the time when I was growing up. It had one of the cafeteria-style eateries inside toward the back of the store. We never ate there. Lots of fond memories.
I’ve been going through old storage of mine, since I moved house on my own for the first time (I’m 23) and I found a package that said “Kmart Photo” I think from Bemidji, Minnesota and it brought me such strange emotions because I’ve been to Kmart in multiple locations, but didn’t get to experience the golden age of the chain…..it filed for bankruptcy for the first time in 2002, when I was 1 year old…..anyways thanks Wallie for showing love to these old relics of American people
I love seeing some of the old markings and characteristics of an old Kmart. It reminds me of my young adulthood and childhood. I am just amazed it sat there for so long and it looks okay. I think it does look like the very old Kmart style. I remember the Changes I think around 1990 or 1991? Is that when they did their rebrand? I know when I was a child especially in the early to mid 80s. It looks so different. But this style this look looks like pre-rebranding era. I’d be interested in knowing if something else was in its place. The mold smell means it just sat there for awhile If it was used as something else. Thank you for this find
Really cool find! Man; I wish you could have gotten in and looked around. Just something about these old buildings just takes you back to better times. You know? Great job wallie! Appreciate you putting out all of your content and asking as you do; we will co time to watch!
After K-Mart closed it was Domino Logistics. I was in there in the 2004-2006 era. It still felt like a K-Mart. Not sure when they left! The McDonalds was closed many years ago and it is in rough shape! Also, there was Tops Supermarket in the plaza that built a huge new Tops on the corner of Route 20 and West Prospect. It is now a Busy Beaver. I worked in Tops for Charter One Bank(Now Citizens Bank).
We had a Kmart in my city that sat abandoned like this for about 15 years. It looked identical to this one. Walmart eventually tore it down and built a super center in its place.
Awesome find. I saw pictures from flickr & this person took some pics from I'm assuming the same kmart. It had the name of "Domino Logistics" on the front of the building. That maybe the S you saw. It was painted white at one time with that other name.
Our old K-mart in Quincy Illinois closed in 2014 or 2015 and and stayed closed until Target bought it in 2022 and remodeled the old 1972 building and Target opened up in Summer of 2023.
I looked the history on this Kmart. After it closed, sometime in the 2000s, it was a Domino Logistics, which was then closed in 2018, according to Google maps.
The building looks in great shape for being abandoned for 32 years, also, i think the reason it looks so different from your average Kmart is because it closed before/because of the Massive rebrand they did in the early ro mid 1990s
Good awesome afternoon early video I'm going to watch every single one of newly one here later on Just getting setup for October Halloween stuff here for long.
Kmart closed in Lockport NY in 2002. Building is still there and has been various businesses that have come and gone, more like a plaza now. Those of us who grew up with Kmart will never forget and thanks to Wallie's videos Kmart lives on despite Eddie the Destructors dismantling of Kmart. Good ole Fast Eddie, making millions off Kmart and Sears demises.
Hey there bud, grew up in the area. Used to go there when we were kids all the way up to the day it closed. And remember and had a huge sale of selling off a lot of the merchandise from that particular store and then the grand opening at the mall They moved it to the Ashtabula Mall when they built the mall. What came after Kmart? There was a flea market a flea market last year for quite a few years and then it shut down. Now I think they just used the parking lot as a trucking company. The whole area there shut down when they built The mall. Technically they moved but that was years ago and nothing ever became of What's there now? Thanks for the videos
This Kmart was opened October 10, 1974, and closed August 9, 1992, it was 100,000 Sq. FT. The Super K mat opened August 10th, 1992, and closed July 31, 2016, it was 146,782 Sq FT.
This building has been abandoned for a long time since I can remember. I’ve always wanted to go into that McDonald’s. There’s also an abandoned nursing home near by here that’s on my list too.
I remember the old K mart close to where I grew up In N Versailles PA . They had a big neon K on a poll that would spin . I always thought that was the coolest thing.
Seems like I saw an old style K-Mart like that in my state years ago when I was in my teenage years. Those big white fans in the ceiling says K-Mart without saying K-Mart.
something has been in there since kmart since that exit sign at front is much more modern then 1992 and if it truely been abandone since 1992 that roof would been caved in
A guess: W.T. Grant (Grant's City) before becoming Kmart? After the 1976 bankruptcy liquidation, many Grants locations became Kmarts and other similar style retailers.
I remember when it was Domino Logistics.. Drove past it so many times but Last i heard It was supposed to be demolitioned... Now i'm wondering if the city canceled that

The Kmart was turned into a “Domino Logistics” for a bit which explains why you saw an “S” on the front. But great find!
Look at the front, where it says S real big.
@@TCAPRecipesright on.
Which explains the bombers around the columns.
I live in Ashtabula. I miss this Kmart. The one at the Mall was ok, but this one brings back fond childhood memories of getting toys and games.
Since you are from the area, do you know if it has ever been repurposed into anything else at some point, or did it just stay abandoned for over 3 decades? I am now super curious.
@@AlyssasAutismAdvocacy it’s still abandoned. I wish they would just tear it down. It’s an eye sore.

Well NAFTA has done alot damage for US job growth.

The Dinette counter in the back! Oh yeah... lunch wth my sweet Ma. ❤

Amazing how it’s still abandoned today!
KMart... popcorn and Cherry Icee when mom and grandma shop.
Biiig fat sub sandwiches to go.

@@rickcunning wow. My late husband loved Busy Beaver!!!
You should check out the old abandoned Wal-Mart in Manning, South Carolina.
In 92, i was 3 years old the K-mart was closing whilst i was in Diapers 😂
Kmart In Fairborn Ohio closed in 2014 and In December 2023 got bought and is turning it into storage sense
The former Kmart in Englewood was also turned into a storage facility.

Ashtabula is basically a crumbling ghost town.
I miss Kmart , Hills , K’s Merchandise , Venture etc
I miss trump!
A great find, Wallie! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I really miss shopping at Kmart.
It ain't easy driving by a abandon Kmart that used to be so full of life like the one in my state so sad.
awesome video
Finding a vintage Kmart that was closed more than 3 decades ago is quite the find.
Great video! Our local Kmart was turned into an Aldi’s, Big lots, and O’Reily’s.
wow surprised the building is still standing wow, that building should be torn town

Appeared to have been used by some sort of logistics company between 2008 and 2012. From what I saw on google street view.

So do I.
That Kmart closed the same year the Ashtabula Mall opened.
The last closest Kmart near Toledo, Ohio closed in November 2022 and that was located in the town of Marshall, Michigan.

The Kmart that were built in the 50s and 60s have big fans in the back instead of individual air conditioning units up on the roof
Wallie, You should wear a mask because of the mold
I remember when Kmart used to look like this.
Opened 1974
What is going on with All of those trailers in the parking lot
It's a "hub" for trailers I would assume. Sorta like Kraft maid by me has lots of trailers also and aren't all Kraft maid trailers.

being basically closed for 30 or so years the building is still in decent shape, the parking lot not so much
Ashtabula - 4941 N Ridge Road W - Store #3157, (Opened on October 10, 1974) - Closed in August 1992. Currently Vacant.
What Kmart should of never done was bought Sears and hired Eddy Lampert to run the company
More like should've never brought in Chuck Conaway in 2000 then Eddie would've never bought them out of bankruptcy
That Kmart is currently a shipping facility for some company
