That's a great line and I'd love to see more of a comparison to that. Some of the other former Legionaires who have made videos and published books have given the impression that day to day life in the Legion is comparable to prison. Not exactly the same, but comparable.

Man, thank you for making these videos. As others have said, I think so many of us can relate to a degree. I was a Ranger in the 75th Ranger Regiment from 2004-2008. In 2007 I got a DUI when out celebrating graduating this long special course.. starting something new for the Regiment.. honor graduate.. 4 deployments under my belt already..
Since I fucked up that opportunity but had a good reputation, a lot of respect.. blah blah.. I didn’t get in any trouble.. at all… just had to find a new place to hide out for work for a few months before I could come back..
Instead, I went to SFAS, then the Q-course and became a Green Beret. Never changing my drinking habits.. just thought I had a driving problem.
Deployments, schools, respect, years.. start stacking up.. I decide I want to go further..
I take the long walk but tear up my knee.. I was invited back but instead I chose to hit the bottle..
Heal up the in knee, go to the SF Intel Sergeant course.. finish the whole course but on the last day I get drunk downtown DC and punch a taxi cab driver in front of a cop. Wake up on a jail cell floor in Alexandria Virginia… my absolute nightmare.. waking up in jail barely knowing what happened..
Again, because of experience, respect, time, etc. I plead no contest to a misdemeanor assault, unsupervised probation.. I get a complete pass in the Army.. under the rug..
Deploy again.. twice.. same activities bring some heat on my last deployment thanks to a rat..
Get a minimum slap on the wrist..
A few weeks later.. senior NCO course.. I get a DUI..
It’s been years since all of this but still hurts to this day. Your channel is awesome man. I’d love to talk.

I never served as a SEAL but I served 7 yrs in a ranger unit. When I joined the legion in 88 it was an awakening for sure and when we came to out regiments the older legionnaires said, "you should have done selection and training when we did it" implying it was too soft for us...well I sort of got it because they stopped beating EV's at Castel a few years later.
But I do totally agree with you, the legion environment and the psychological effect is a totally different animal and it's a hard one for sure!

"French Foreign Legion is like being in prison where they give you a gun once in a while" 🤣 Sounds harsh, I recall in a documentary I saw a while back that they don't even give recruits enough to eat Re: daily calorie burn, so the guys are always hungry. The language barrier has got to be tough! It's bad enough getting cussed out in your own language. Well, I guess emersion is the best way to learn? I was trying to frame the unit mission, I guess it's kind of like a lightweight MEU without air/sea support, just land based units? Fascinating stuff!

This is great insight into both organizations. Continue with this and explain roles of each Legion specialty. I would like to know more about the Pioneers. I think they are then equivalent to the US Army Engineer Branch but these FFL guys on parade wear leather aprons and carry axes. I guess the leather aprons and axes are legacy equipment from the experiences of WW1. The aprons protecting them from barbed wire entanglements and the axes to cut through as they broke open defenses for an infantry assault.
I read Irwin Rommel's book "Infantry Attacks" (several times and I will read it again) from his experience as a lieutenant in the WW1 German Army and I learned so much about infantry tactics from his book. I never understood why you needed mountain troops until I read his book. He was an infantry lieutenant in the Wurrtemburg Mountain Battalion and so he explained that, before an army formation can cross an area under the commanding view of a mountain you must occupy that mountain to protect your force from enfilading fire from the mountain. Friendly mountain troops must occupy the mountain you will pass under and the fight between mountain troops of opposing forces over this rugged ground decides who can pass beneath the mountain.
    Thank you for your podcasts!

I first saw you on the Mike Drop Podcast. My first impression was that you were basically a dirt bag although my military career wasn't stellar either. As I continued to watch, I found that I couldn't look away. Since I have heard your story I have watched (pretty much non-stop) your story and life wisdom. Great content. I have a friend and former golf bubby who is a retired Navy SEAL. I do not use his name because I don't have his permission and not sure how the community viewed him. He's my friend.

Very interesting stuff my uncle who was a vietnam army combat vet and grew up speaking french via my grand parents as our family had french heritage he had talked about joining the french foriegn legion back in the 70s after coming home from nam he was researching etc but in the end got married and pursued raising family ....and he now regrets not trying out 😅....it was the first time I heard of the french foriegn legion but he did not go into details like you ..great break down explanation👍🏻

What an amazing experience this soldier is living. Think about, he made it to the Seal Teams and is now in the Legion. Holy Cow...

Love it man. Work is slow right now (crane industry NYC). I get a new video from you and hear that raspy voice, and it gets my ass out of bed into the gym pushing weight. Fuckin dig it!
