Oppo Find N2 Review: A Foldable With Wide Appeal

  • There are two types of foldable phone that matter: large-format book-style folding tablets, and compact flip-style clamshells. Or at least, that was true until Oppo came along with a flexible-display smartphone that tried to carve out a space between. The Oppo Find N2 is the sequel to last year’s standout Find N, and I've spent one holiday break over two weeks across three states seeing how this in-betweener compares to its more common competition. I'm a galaxy fold 4 owner and gotta say. The oppo was the first foldable that made me consider the format and is a strong reason the fold became my daily carry. I kinda prefer the look of Oppo Find N2. The outer screen looks like something I really prefer - I smaller but wider screen you can use with one hand. I have big hands but even for me tall screens are not comfortable to use.
    The app behavior is not excusable. It's not only on foldables but android tablets as well. The app behavior is atrocious and app compatibility with wide screen is all over the place.

      To my knowledge this has gotten worse over the years as companies abandoned the tablet as a useful market to pursue...we're a long way from 2012 when Windows 8 launched with a touch focus, and Android tablets were all the rage. As companies pull purse strings ever tighter, focusing on portrait smartphone usage seems like it's going to be haunting us for a while to come, even as foldable phones bring the tablet back to the forefront once more.

      @@colombiantom... Except doing so makes the tablet display a fucking SQUARE that's dogshit for widescreen media watching in landscape AND scrolling modern vertical app feeds in portrait. 🤷 OnePlus Open has the same exact problem. While Fold 2/3 were definitely too narrow, Fold 4/5 are arguably the best balance of inner to outer display shape/size you can get in a tablet style foldable. Otherwise you are massively compromising on one screen or the other.

    Water resistance is nice but I can't recall the last time I got a phone wet. I'd happily trade out water resistance for numerous other features, like a swappable battery. Yep, if you are already accustomed to that aspect ratio then there's no problem at all. But considering majority of people uses smartphones in the 16:9 ratio, the Zfold's ratio becomes an issue, especially on the cover screen.

    • @NigelMelanisticSmith
      @NigelMelanisticSmith Год назад

      @@dragonforcegaming7555 The LGG8X is 16:9, the issue is that the addition of hinge and 2nd screen made it worse one handed than a standard phone. Since I've used a 16:9 foldable, and Samsung's thinner foldable, I grew used to the fold simply because of improved ergonomics. Part of me thinks this is where Microsoft should have come back into the market for business type phones. I loved my now broken Duo (dropped it 😭😭) but alot of the issues it has had over the 2 years in the market were due to limits in Android.

      Globally the foldable market isn't much developed yet. So if they sold it, they would be in a loss. Think of it, the only Foldable devices available globally are from Samsung. So when we know the increment in foldable's sales, its an exaggerated value made solely for increasing the sales of Foldables by Samsung. Whereas in China, the foldable market is more developed and is a competitive one. So selling in China=more profit for every brand. Even Samsung sells it's best foldable in China-only.

    In terms of software compatibility, it is important to remember that Oppo N2 was never designed for the oversea market outside mainland China. I absolutely agree that many apps, even common ones, are still not very foldable friendly. In fact, manufacturers often have to work with developers of top apps to make it happen on an app to app basis. Most of the apps mentioned here will never find their way to Chinese users, such as Chase, Delta, and Instagram (which is straight up banned in China). On the other hand, Samsung probably has to do something for the NA market.

    I like the form factor of the Zfold4. The slim front display makes it easy to use with one hand. When I have 2 hands available I open it up to tablet mode. I also like how it slides in the pocket despite it's thickness. Samsung nailed it with the under-display selfie camera (I never use selfie cameras) and the waterproofing so I can enjoy these youtube videos in the shower with the massive display. My one wish for the Zfold5 is some innovation to lessen the visible crease. I would also like a way to zoom into videos baked into the OS. RUclips has a pretty terrible implementation of this where it is either zoomed in to the max or not at all, I would prefer to pinch and zoom to my preferred size for the video I'm watching.

      If leaks so far are to be trusted, the Pixel Fold is a hair narrower and a bit taller than the Find N/N2 but not as narrow as the Z Fold or as tall. I'm good with that if true. As much as I love the Find N's form factor, it is a bit too wide and too short, sort of going too much in the opposite approach of Samsung being too tall and too narrow. Whether this was always Google's plan to use those dimensions or they saw the first Find N and felt they will make theirs some middle ground we may never know. I like my Pixel 6 and 7 Pro's enough that I won't get a foldable if it's not a Pixel so I'll keep waiting.

      Yeah I'm really hoping the leaks are true because it looks great so far. The perfect middle ground like you said. I'm in exactly the same boat, went from pixel 6 pro to pixel 7 pro and super happy with it. I've been jealous of the Galaxy fold with every generation looking better, but I just can't tolerate Samsung's version of Android (despite them improving and stream lining it vastly). I used to be all about AOSP ROMS back in the day then moved to OnePlus (when they were good lol) and once the pixel 6 pro came out (and OnePlus 8 just didn't seem that great especially coming from OnePlus 7 pro) I knew it's time. I just really want a foldable, so I hope Google doesn't pull a pixel 3 derp face or something dumb like that.

The screen aspect ratios makes sense, some are just as thin as a normal phone and provide much more variety in size. If Xiaomi, vivo, Oppo, and Huawei would bring these designs to the west it and get the necessary adjustment it needs in software to really be just as or better than Samsung. Then the foldable category of phones would be better for all. Right now with Samsung being the only globally available option for foldables we are stuck with stagnant iteration and quite frankly overpriced phones. @dragonforcegaming7555 Год назад

      @@Achillias to be honest, it's not "foldables are showing growth" it's more of Samsung showing growth. The details you get from the websites, about foldable shipments and sales are actually provided by Samsung and they often increase the actual amount(by a good percentage) to increase their sales. Most users of Foldables in their report are from NA and Europe (which is still less than that of China). But in real life, how many do you see carrying the Foldables(or actually purchasing it?
      You are right that they could've sold it through online but again, how many in Europe or NA knows oppo or other Chinese brands? the ones who know, may buy but a brand(which is smaller than both Samsung and Apple as an individual) cannot take risks like this, especially in Europe after their issue with Nokia in Germany.
      BBK electronic's brands are especially noted for their apple-like approach, i.e, to not take risks but sit-back and let the other brands take the risks first. That's the sole reason why Oppo and Vivo never launched their foldable or smartwatch or custom NPU until last year.
      One more thing, Samsung launched their Foldables almost everywhere because they can afford the loss as they recover from other markets(high pricing poor specs, best example India where they exploit this brand image to it's full) and products(just like Xiaomi), so it's not a big deal for them. They don't even care much, as you saw in Z fold & flip 4. They too sell their best Foldable phone in China only. You will see that phone in Mrwhosetheboss's latest video.

      I expect Samsung has made massive losses with its foldable line, a deep money pit. The sales could be faster in growth, faked by Samsung offering massive trade-in deals to boost the latest Flip or Fold. Samsung is great at marketing and fooling its fan. TBH, the growth of foldable has been very slow compared to what creators and fans suggested, and the reality is that until they come down to a more reasonable price, they are doomed to be niche with maybe fewer takers over time.
