[TECNO PHANTOM V FOLD REVIEW]
Ever since they first hit the market four years ago, large-format folding phones have faced three major challenges: they’re big; they’re fragile; and they’re expensive. Well manufacturers like Xiaomi and Oppo have begun to solve the size issue; Samsung has started to offer some pretty inclusive repair options (at least in the United States) … and now, a company you’ve probably never heard of has released a foldable that undercuts its competitors by hundreds of dollars. I’m Michael Fisher and I’ve spent a week with the $1100 foldable - the TECNO Phantom V Fold!

The fact that he makes videos about almost all the foldables makes him one of the best.
He is indeed one of the best!
He’s not one of the best. He’s simply THE best.
@@PaulScullion55 💯💯💯
Can’t really blame anybody for not. So many of them have no US support.
He is a foldable main
I'll give the props for including a great case. It's carbon fiber(my favorite material) and has a built in kick stand . A huge upgrade over the clear plastic/rubber cases you get with most other phones.
Absolutely. And including both a case and a charger at this price point (when Samsung ships its foldables in a mostly-empty box) is commendable.
It most likely is not *carbon* fiber, that would be very expensive
@@TheMrMobile Remember when the first galaxy fold included galaxy buds?
@@user-ks4eh4je8h you can get carbon fiber cases for $25-$40 or even less buying straight from China(I'm sure they cost them under $10 to make). Sure it's more expensive than plain clear plastic but they're usually a thin layer of basic 1x1 CF mesh which isn't that expensive. From what I saw it looked like carbon fiber but I could be mistaken.
@@TheMrMobile no doubt. It's great seeing smaller and budget companies giving you more for your buck when the big makers keep giving you less and less.
Great review as usual. Always look forward to a new video from you, especially from the "when phones were fun" series.
Everyday that Micheal drops a new video is a good day.
I know, when I got the notification, I took a 15 min break from work just to watch it.
Michael…watch your spelling !
Agreed
Oooo yes😁
Yes this video was flipping good for a folding phone. 😂
any lower cost foldables is a good thing to me, this is one step forward towards an affordable foldable future. I'm still waiting until that happens until I get one... either that or a miraculous drop of dollar bills on my lap. I love seeing you be so passionate about foldables!
They seem pointless to me. It’s cool that technology has gotten to a point where we have folding glass but these phones scream “doing it because we can”. Even if these things were 200 bucks I wouldn’t touch them with a 10 foot pole.
I found this phone for the equivalent of USD$933 here in Manila, plus they are throwing-in an airfryer and a power bank.
@@bernielomax4702, perhaps they are pointless you, but to those who want to place their phones in a trouser pocket and have the benefit of a huge screen, they are not.
@@bernielomax4702 Indeed, for the price of the flagship Samsung flip you could just get iPad/tabet + good phone
To be honest I was expecting companies to drop the folding screens very quickly after the first iterations like they did with those 3D displays
But the willingness to innovate is just great! Thanks for the great video like always!
@Carl Gunderson yep even they get sub $1k, I'm getting one.
I wonder how a switch would look with a 3d screen
@@efonwang I found this phone for the equivalent of USD$933 here in Manila, plus they are throwing-in an airfryer and a power bank.
Quality content as always. These folding phones remind me of the Nokia n9500 communicator. You should do a video of that phone, which, in my opinion, inspired this whole folding design.
yes please! Or the E90!
Mr. Mobile is one of the creators you can trust when he says get excited for a hinge based video lol
I'd love to see a video on the value of second hand foldables - like how does a galaxy fold2 or fold3 hold up today for the money?
Great question! I kinda want a Fold but there's no way I'll spend the kind of money a Fold 4 costs.
Fold 3 is a good buy....
I've had my fold 3 for over a year and the folding screen is still perfect...😊 everything about my fold is running smoothly.
I got my Fold 3 for $800, much better deal than this cheap version that'll probably be useless in a year or two. The only downside is the weight and very poor battery life of the Z Fold 3.
My Fold2 was still doing well last month no real reason to upgrade other than the software updates were ending. Switched to Fold4 anyway just because it was cheap the only thing I've noticed that is better is the camera loads up quickly and the camera quality is a lot better.
You're so underrated my friend. Really love all the quality videos you produced. Keep it up mate!
I have to say I agree I would like to see the next version of this as well as see it in the states. The market just doesn't have competition for folding devices in states. Wish LG was still making devices since I think they would make the one we could all use and afford.
I'm not really sure how you perfected mix reviewing with blogging but I love it
I agree with all the comments about the quality and content. This is the best and you always impress me with your well rounded knowledge.
First time seeing one of your videos you're the most honest reviewer I've seen in a while
I really respect your honesty, you have the courage to always say it as you see it ❤️ that is why I always watch and trust your reviews
Hands down the Best soothing voice of MrMobile

I've been watching all your videos on my z fold 4 and thinking how exciting the future is gonna be for foldable phones! Love your videos and I don't ever wanna go back to a normal brick phone
Looking forward to that hinge video, sounds like fun!
This is why I subscribe to your channel! Thanks for bringing this phone to my attention, warts and all. It means the foldable market is getting closer and closer to the average consumer. I wish Samsung would take a page from its own playbook and have a Galaxy Fold FE edition that knocks a couple hundred off the price or what Google does with their A series line of their flagship phones.
Have faith Michael, a day will come where we both own that Eams Lounge Chair. Outstanding work on the review as per usual.
I still want that Mondrian Edition Tecno Camon you mentioned a while back - real tough cookie to find here in the States!
Great video! I think a quick take on how you use snapseed would be very interesting :)
Noticed the INR to dollar conversion. Nice touch😊
Great review and appreciate the De La Soul shoutout!
Every time I see a new Mr. Mobile video I gotta see it immediately. Thanks for your work!
Great Video 👍🏼
Looking forward for the windowsphone throwback video 🙌🏼
Ich finde deine Videos sind noch etwas unterhaltsamer geworden seitdem Ilias mit dabei ist. Weiter so! :)
Thank you for your great review Michael. Which app are you using to take your notes?
the only tech youtuber that i believe with foldable phones!!!!
Your E6 reference at the beginning is spot on!
Can't escape my TECNO
Waching this on my Fold 4 which i bought because of you, am grateful 🙏 ❤ Thanks for everything Michael.
Wow, it's becoming an exciting market - for those of us not in the good ol' US of A. Thanks Michael, this is very interesting!
I'd say the USA are just about the worst place to be a fan of foldables rn, I just found out that their prices are a good $500/600 above what we get here in europe
@@Terrorbrot because it's an iPhone nation
Nice vid from my favourite tech youtuber!
I use their Camon 18 Premier (sometimes),and it's great!
Thanks for the review. Good to see a budget foldable that actually looks half-decent.
I'm wondering if you have a video about how you do your videos, the quality is really good.
(3:00) I still find it awesome that Michael uses Evernote in a similar way to how I use it to plan out my videos, as I too have dedicated notebooks for all 2 of my RUclips channels _(soon to be more, hint hint)_ and one note for each video idea.
(3:34) I should, one day, search online for modern replicas of antique furniture to match my somewhat strange and film-inspired design tastes.
(3:40) I hope that reply was to a legitimate sponsor and not a Russian cryptocurrency scam group posing as one
(3:44) I won't be surprised if that was backed by a VSAT or 3G connection.
(3:50) Yep, I do a similar thing too, but usually on a tablet as I primarily read comics. 'Podcasts and Spotify streaming' are one for me as I listen to podcasts on Spotify.
Excited for the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 5's, respectively
Looking forward to the "into the fold" vid 🎉
Well you are right, never heard about this brand besides the Mondrian phone.
Don't like this finish on the Phantom, most of the time it looks like it was pre-scratched at factory, so you don't have to worry about scratching it yourself. 5000 mAh sounds impressive and proper capacity on a foldable. Good to know they do recognize the special possibilities that the foldable character of the phone offers and offer those shortcuts and the taskbar.
The switches of exposition on the video you shown are really prominent and annoying. The problem with the gallery / camera freezing is a haunting memory of what my Galaxy M21 was doing. But of course expanding the market of foldables downward is what this segment of phone construction needs.
3:35 - Michael Fisher knows Eames lounge chair ! +100 charisma !
Music at the end is sick
This is like the best video about this Tecno Foldable
Ooh, I picked a great time to rediscover Mr. Mobile ! (edit: Thx to that Trello commercial)
Unbiased solid review from the best phone advisor.
Man, I can't believe it's already been nearly half a decade since foldables first hit the market 😧
We’re going to die soon.
Great content as always!
By the way, did you just say India and Asia? 😄
Judging by the leaks, we are not that far away from foldable Pixel, super excited about that one.
Big same. I've never been a giant fan of Samsung's software aesthetic (even though OneUI is very capable) so I'm eager to experience a foldable with Pixel-style Android - and of course, that camera!
We have all been waiting for the Pixel Fold, seemingly forever, and the Pixel Tablet; where is that? I won't go into an anti-Fold rant, but that has so many negatives; only its monopoly has meant it has survived.
@@TheMrMobile Haha glad we have the same opinions! Also not a fan of the bold OneUI atheststic, though it seems many others like it.
Oh my.
I like the way you review the cell phones keep it up
Man, your scripts are the best...
Would you suggest this over something like a used Fold 2/3 at a similar price point in India?
I love my Oppo Find N2. And more brands are going to release them.
What an honest review!
Jeez!
Thank you...

MrMobile aka MrFoldable, looking forward to the next one
Great video dude. I have one question though. Did you manage to get instagram work on splitscreen mode when unfolded?
I have tried all possible ways be it from developer options to other things but instagram just won't show the option of splitscreen at all.
Hello Mister Michael (foldy boy nerd as Miss Cherlynn says), first at all, thanks for all the reviews. Everytime a pleasure to see. Concerning folding phones, I am using a Z Fold 4 since comming out (changing from the fruit company) and I my opinion this is the only folding phone in the moment in US and Europe where all components works and you do not have any restrictions. There is a IPX8 rating (my Z Fold is falling in a not very deep lake by taken pictures), it is fast, the 120hz display is crisp and clear, the form factor can be better, no doubt, the camera is not the best but very good and yes, there is still no S-Pen Slot and maybe there will even not be with the Z Fold 5. But overall and with all the negative aspects I love my Z Fold 4 as my daily driver. Also tried the Surface Duo 2 but this is completly different. I do hope that the competition between Samsung, Oppo etc. will go on and we can see a lot of Videos from you in the future.
Thanks for mentioning INR .
There's no way you're nearly 40!! I still think of spikey haired Michael from Pocketnow!
Great video like always. Your contents are very interesting, like a movie. Fantastic.
Thanks for the reminder De La Soul is finally on Spotify!
Nice De La Soul shout-out
Great video as always!
02:17 really liked the photo performance. Sold.

Great video - as always.
HiOS is lacking in many things but it gets regular updates & it has its fun perks as well. For its price, I can't complain. I personally lean on the Samsung side bc of software experience but my boys enjoy a whole day with their phones w/o bringing their power banks.
I gotta say the full Windsor tie knot pales in comparison to the St Andrews its so classy :)
This is a very nice phone, and I love how Chinese brands are bringing some competition to Samsung. I would love to see a Huawei Mate X3 review as well. It seems the almost perfect foldable we wanted to see, although we know the biggest issues (US sanctions fault).
They’re also bringing spyware by the bucket loads. Here’s hoping the US continues to keep this junk out of here.
One of my favourite Electric Six songs ❤
Definitely worth getting your hands on
I think I just saw Michael Josh😮❤
Glad to finally see something that’s not as expensive as other larger foldables on the market, even though it’s imperfect. As much as I’m liking where these foldables are going, I’d still prefer to stick to my on-the-go combo of an iPhone 14 Pro and iPad Pro 11”.
LOL because you haven't tried it!
@@rjj00 True 😂
Unless you're citing price after trade-in, current US price for the Fold 4 on Samsung's website is $1799.
@@TheMrMobile Or $2,090 if your Canadian like me! Definitely far cheaper to just have the one foldable than a Pro iPad and iPhone. Hope Apple releases a folding phone soon, would love one with iOS.
Mr. Mobile deserves so many more subs than 1.2 million
How did you take that shot at 10:30? In a plane? That smooth of a rotation? Wow!
Ha - appreciate it. Shot that on the ground, and slowed and stabilized the footage - my hands aren't *that* steady!
@@TheMrMobile still amazing! Thanks for the reply
That's a decent double Windsor 👌👌
Aww, yeeeeah! An Electric 6 reference!!!💥💥💥
Great video as always. Phantom looks cool and would be decent for someone wanting that fold function without the fold price. You usually sacrifice (IMHO) features and functionality for a lower price point. Again, just my opinion.
Does this phone support video out through type c so I can use an external touch screen like the nex pad or the nex doc?
One point that companies figured out is the outside screen. Focus on that one. Make it like a normal phone screen. So you can use as a normal phone most of the time.
THEN when you need more screen, you open it. That the ideal scenario.
If you need to unfold it every single time, DOA
Had my hopes up, but Best Buy regularly sells open-box Z Fold 4s for $1200 or less, with full warranty.
The Tecno company is very popular in countries like Nigeria, China, Ghana and India.
This latest flagship looks amazing to the human eye. 🎉
2:05 That sounded like an Artemis Fowl fan's line...coincidence?
Nicely done!
Once again... another perfect video. Mr. Mobile is THE authority on Mobile reviews. This is the standard.
Thank you for this brutal review, TECNO users do not expect the phones to be as magical as Samsung Vivo or Oppo and surely do not want to put 1000 USD up for a TECNO unless it's a gift. They seem not to want to accept that their best-selling products are the models that cost less than 200 USD but try these aims at international markets and competition that make them look unfortunate at making the best type of phones they can ever make
Finally a video for which i can say that it's giving honest opinion. Most of the videos on the RUclips of this phone talks about positive stuff and no one talks about the negetive ones. Seems like almost all the videos are sponsered by company itself. By the way, you can buy this now brand new for around US $600 in India.
How do i buy the Tecno Phantom Fold in Canada?
😂 Was that Jaime Rivera at 2:20?
Seeing the INR value really made me happy... I'd love to see more tech youtubers include more formats of currency in their videos...
It's probably because the phone is aimed at the third world market
Tecno has their fair share of software bugs; in my experience, my Tecno Pova 3 has several UI bugs that prop up every hour or so
How about the multitasking experience? Was it smooth?
What I like is At least they are trying.watching it on lg g8x and I miss LGs innovative phones😢
Love that foldables are getting cheaper, the hardware seems solid for the price and most of the bugs looks like they can be ironed out with a software update. And for a first gen product this seems great, brighter screens and improved software this would be a steal of a deal!
Thanx a ton MrMobil.... :)
I’ve been looking to buy one since I saw another review but it looks like they aren’t available in the US yet. Is that true?
De La Soul!!! Hell yeah!!!!!
By the way. I trust only in you for folding phone’s reviews
I like the look of this - found my next phone :)
As a person who had all of the Samsung folds and flips I much rather my flat slate format I formally owned a cell phone store so I swapped phones at least 3 /4 time a year I had every major release even Chinese market phones but like I said I always find my self reverting back to slates
loving the techno
