[TECNO PHANTOM V FLIP HANDS-ON]
If you haven’t heard of TECNO, you’re not alone. This sub-brand of Transsion Holdings doesn’t sell phones in the US, so most folks here have never heard of it - despite it being the brand that brought us the CAMON 19 PRO (a color-changing Mondrian phone) last year, and the world’s most affordable large-format foldable back in the spring: the TECNO Phantom V Fold.
Not content to lay back in the cut, TECNO is kickin’ off the fall with another foldable: this time, a flip phone that’s weird, whimsical, and … what? Only $600?
This deserves a quick look under the hood - on Into The Fold!
[ABOUT INTO THE FOLD EPISODE 14]
This is the fourteenth in a series of episodes exploring the many facets of life on a folding screen. From the best foldable phones of 2023 to the bleeding-edge world of folding-screen laptops, “Into The Fold” is MrMobile’s showcase for the most exciting movement in mobile technology since 2007!
This episode of “Into The Fold” was made possible by a Phantom V Flip review sample provided by TECNO. Pre-production sample running pre-release software.

I still remember when 600$ was flahship smartphone price...
I remember people laughing when a phone was over 200 dollars
Yeah although you got to factor in inflation. Like the Note 5 was an $800 phone 9 years ago. That would be worth $1,100 in purchasing power today. People sometimes overlook these things.
I miss the days of the Google nexus.
Me too. Heck I remember when it was considered ridiculous to charge that much for a phone
@@michaelcorcoran8768yeah and the new Samsung's ARE $1000.
Your personality and strong preference for certain things - but still being able to review more than just what you like makes me enjoy your channel more than other big tech nerds.
I very much appreciate that. Thank you!
@@TheMrMobile So true. This aspect is not highlighted much. There are many youtubers who started out as budget phone reviewers but no longer review sub $1000 phone.
In 2001, my wife and I bought a (yes, a singular) Nokia 3310. It was almost $400 out the door with a sim card. We were excited but frustrated at the same time because that was simply incomprehensible amount of money for a Middle Eastern family. But hey, it’s still in my drawer and yes it still works. This foldable with all the new features is almost as expensive when adjusting for inflation than our Nokia lol.
Don't worry sir, very few people could afford a phone back then.
In my childhood place, having a phone back then were already considered rich.
In my opinion, the Moto Razr 2019 is still the prettiest foldable :)
The styling alone on my Razr 5G makes it hard to step away from it. I like foldables specifically because they're "different" and now that they look (at least for the most part) so similar, I find little reason to upgrade as of now
Couldn't agree more, I ❤ it
Honestly the chip in that thing is grotesquely underappreciated. 765 powered the LG velvet, the LG wing, the pixel 5.... It was really such a great ship for having affordable 5G. Reasonable thermals to this day on the phones I still use with it
@@michaelcorcoran8768 If it weren't for all those drawbacks, I would've bought that phone in a heartbeat, tbh.
Whole-heartedly agree with you there. That's how you take cue from the predecessor design language.
What would be really cool is if the company allows a phone widget in the form of a vintage rotary dial on the outer circular display that enables us to dial numbers the old-school way. That would make me want to dial a lot of numbers that way instead of going into the phonebook 😄
I'm pretty sure there is an app for it because it is just animation
Haha that would be useful and a good use of the outer screen. It is an animation but it needed to be coupled with the numbers in your phone
Love the honesty that you’re too busy with the iPhone and that this isn’t a real review. That’s all ppl want, honesty. Looking forward to the real review.
Was waiting for your input on the Phantom V Flip since it was launched, and damn you're fast! Loved the video, and also glad that foldables pricing are slowly going down becoming more affordable and approachable 👍
Exactly
It's a bad foldable tbh
Yeah, we still waiting for the Galaxy A flip and A fold
It's interesting to see what phones this this takes design cues from, how it takes them, and how well it does it for the money. Still hoping we'll get the return of wood, even as a veneer, from the Moto X days of yore. Glass isn't the only "premium" material.
I did not realise how much I want a phone with a wood and brass look until right now.
@@person.probably Yeah, a Steampunk style... Could look good! 🤔😏. Like my main comment, I think that IF the likes of this small company Techno can release a 'Midrange' flippy at this price, maybe the likes of Motorola and Samsung SHOULD also think about releasing a 'Midrange' flippy to entice more people into this genre of phones, we'd also get better build quality, software, and... Those vital updates too... 🤔
😎🇬🇧
@@thedarkknight1971wasnt really thinking of a steampunk look tbh, more of a fantasy vibe. Carved vines and inlaid brass flowers.
I'm not so sure about the other stuff but we're still in the (relatively) early days of foldables, and this new phone seems to be a big step forward.
🤠🇦🇺
If you flip it upside down, it's colour scheme looks like Pixel 2's kinda blue. I wish there were more phones with this kind of colour.
For those looking for specs: it has a MT Dimensity 8050 SoC (about the level of a Snapdragon 865 in both performance and graphics), 8GB of RAM, 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage, runs Android 13, the screen goes up to 1000nit, 120Hz refresh rate, 4000mAh battery, no microSD, no headphone jack, no wireless charging, no IP rating.
No Michael, we need a full review on this phone even if it's after the busy season of techtember. Would really appreciate a comparison with the other filps like the razor minus
Man! Never retire please. Love watching your stuff.
Your videos are feels like I'm listening to some poet. Really love the way you present your videos. Not like some other reviewers who just talk about boring specs. I haven't seen anyone talking about phone design in such a detail.
Your videos really standout from the crowd. And that's why I watch your videos without miss and sometimes even multiples times.
I'm glad that we're seeing so many companies get in on the folding action! It's been a good year for folding phones to say the least.
10:07
I am pumped! (yes, I have a Surface Duo 2, and yes, I'll miss Panos...)
Saturday night and a MR Mobile feature film??? This is a WIN
I'm sold on it being $600. I can't really be stirred away with that price point.
I love it. After switching to new moto from flip 3 i was thinking to update flip but it just got lost in my back pack :) this one tho is so stylish))) love it. Thank you Mickle, u r the best!
Cool that they’re making strides towards making folding phones cheaper. Would love to see that happen to the ones that fold out into a tablet rather than into a normal phone though, I can already fit a normal phone in my pocket so I have no reason to want to fold that in half
This gives me hope that perhaps some day budget folds will retail for less than flagship slabs though. In the meantime I’m eying the Z Fold 5, might be worth paying up to get in on it a few years earlier
Pretty happy with my RAZR 40 (not ultra) as a super nice mid-range foldable. Great performance day to day and high refresh rate screen.
I'm still giggling at the reference to the Moto RAZR Minus. I tip my hat to you good sir!
I'm glad to see tecno trying to be that company that's trying to budget price this style of tech and I like what it's offered for the price.
And yeah...I'm done asking for a fold 5 review lol. Ton of reviewers just didn't follow up their hands on and the game is the game I guess lol.
Honestly, it's still in my plan. The trouble is, with something as iterative as Fold 5, someone like me has to find the right angle to tell a story that's worth the time and effort of making a video. Just haven't figured it out yet.
@@TheMrMobile I figured that was the case when I saw in your iPhone video that you had the pixel fold (which I got a week ago and totally get it) in a shot on the plane but I didn't know you were going about reviewing the fold 5 in a story sense. I guess game doesn't recognize game...you win this round and I'll be patient Michael lol. That aside? Keep putting out heat! Thanks for responding.
@@TheMrMobile It's also valid to send Samsung a message by not making a video. After all, the Fold 5 is not only derivative, it's supposed to be the leading product in a cutting-edge tech segment. Don't overwork yourself!
For an affordable price I'm loving the outer display ❤. The price is unbeatable and the combine foldability is enough to command satisfaction. What's to complain about ?😊. And the crease is near invisible like so close to invisibility. Amazing! 👍🏾. And the added front flash is crazy and wonderful 👍🏾. Kudos to Tecno Phantom for their cheap, affordable version of a innovative flip phone. 😎💯💯💪🏾👍🏾
Thank you for including INR .
I truly appreciate how your love of Star Trekis incorporated into your videos. Quapla!
Hope you could have comparison of its counterpart in Infinix and iTel sister brand.
If you're trying to pronounce the German "ü" sound for the "u" in "Ulefone", known as the [y] "close front rounded vowel", this is how you do it. Pronounce the "ee"/"ie"/ [i] sound while pursing your lips like you're making the "oo"/[u] sound. The resulting sound will be the mishmash you're looking for.
"This could be a real Phantom Menace" is just *chefs kiss*
Just love listening to your voice. Couldn't care less about flip phones.
Do you do audiobooks?
I'm a simple man, I see a Mr.Mobile video, I click.
Then 👍
WE NEED A SAMSUNG JUKE VIDEO ! CLASSIC PHONE!
For the circular screen you could also do Livingston in his fish tank!
"Get that fish out of the Ready Room." 😄
How's the hinge? does it feel flimsier than the Samsung ones?
Love the look of that Casio. Any chance we'll ever get another "When phones were fun"?
In India, the Razr 40 actually costs about the same!
Please get back to this phone and do a full review even if it takes you a few months (at least you could talk about updates by then 😅).
Bar phones are so booooring and every other reviewer covers them while you're the only one that puts foldables in the spotlight where they deserve to be!
PS: I miss your smartwatch reviews as well ⌚
One odd question can you please tell me the app name so that I can set star trek animation. Pls which you have shown in this video
Considering the price of a new Galaxy Z Flip 4 is in the range of this Tecno I'd be hard pressed to look down this road. However lowering the entry level MSRP for flip phones is something we should all rejoice. Despite mid-range now somehow being 600$...
I am so glad you review these phones. Makes me happy to see what other options are in other markets. Not that I'd ever buy them it's just nice to see. Plus it's clear you enjoy these. While I get that the iPhone content is the money maker. How much is there to say about what feels like the same phone for another year.
Hey MrMobile, your videos aren't being pushed to my notifications for some reason, even though I subscribed to get updated for all of them. Had to go look for your newest one. Just letting you know.
The Z Flip 5 exclusive online colors still look the best to me
We need these to come to the states to shake the market up a bit.
Does it work on the US carriers Verizon T-Mobile at&t?
Great to see price in INR!
I was also pumped 😢 hope we will get surface duo 3 at least next year summer
Is there a review on the Fold 5 coming?
Isnt there a $600 moto razer as well? Is that not coming to the states?
Gotta love the alliterations
How early into the script did you come up with the Phantom Menace line? I could sense you were proud to use it in just the right way, as a dig at Moto 😅.
Was that a tease for the OnePlus Open/Honor Magic V2 at 0:55?? 😮
Beautiful keyboard at 1:00
I love leather or pleather backing on phones. I would prefer that to glass.
Because glass is glass…
@@Ag3nt0fCha0s exactly, glass is certainly better than it ever has been, like it just doesnt seem to crack anymore.
but i would much rather leather and metal, leather just feels nice and premium, and i dont really use wireless charging
Ok... where did you get your Start Trek decal there for your Flip?!
I love your love for foldables 😂
I have a tecno spark 10 pro and am pretty happy with it
I just recently thought that a watch screen on the outside of a flip phone might be a good idea, but you hardly touched on its operation. Is it really that bad? I'm curious as to which interface you would prefer: watch style or small screen full phone.
I didn't cover it extensively because there's nothing new versus other foldables with small cover screens. Swipe down for system toggles, up for notifications, left and right for the usual widgets. Nothing that other companies haven't been doing for years.
Thanks Mr mobile
Hi Michael, waiting for Honor magic V2 review!
You forgot to show the phone in the provided case
i really cant wait till we have affordable foldable phones i want a z flip 5 or a honor magic v2 etc but i cant cause its just so damn expensive
How have i not heard of this brand . This is impressive .
They are sold in africa and parts of asia. They are really big there but these "cheap phones" come with allot of tracking you and advertising baked in. Even thought nobody talked about it now... if you search good on the internet you will find articles about it. They do it to cut down on the selling price..
That star wars callback tho!
Are you going to test the Unihertz Jelly Star? 🙂
sir, just wondering whether the hinges of this clammy will have multi-angles lock ? 🤔
Yes, it's positionable!
@@TheMrMobile thanks for the fast response sir, have a good day & stay mobile, too 🤓👍🏻
Not gonna lie, the pocket watch shot was very satisfying
Amazing foldable device from TECNO, it's worth it in every sense.
I think the One Plus 7 Pro almond white finish is the prettiest ive ever seen
Tecno is a good Sub-Saharan African brand...
The problem is, their flagships (and upcoming midrangers) LACK software updates.
Tecno doesn't support their devices with more than a year's worth of software/security updates.
Get this man a podcast!!
Thank you for the shout-out ❤
That intro killed me 😂
Allright now i need a foldable with physical keyboard to complete my life.
I live in a "less developed country" and every time I go to the tech shops I see workers there trying their best to sell people Tecno phones. Recently I decided to check one for myself and god they're so bad. Even though their phone had 8GB of RAM it worked so much slower than some 3-4GB Nokia or Samsung models. I dont know what they're doing with their OS skin to have this.
This needs to be a top comment!
It depends of the processor
Bloatware in every manufacturer except Nokia, pixel, xperia and some Unknown chinese running on android one
This is exciting
This is the wonderful of competition. I mean when other brands following and do what they intended
Like Tecno, introduced cheap flip phone even Motorola before. It can be nice if it available globally 😅
I wish foldables would've followed the Fiest 2 Razrs designs since imo they were cleaner then the over all square design solidified by Samsung
Watching this on my flip 5, just so satisfying to shut it after watching this 😂
I'm still gasping for air with that another Ulefone bit 🤣🤣🤣
Can you review xiaomi 13t and 13t pro....those cameras on these 2 look promising
Why was the price shown in INR?
P-50 pocket is one of the best looking phones I've ever seen on video anyway.
The only thing the outside screen reminds me of is a rotary dial on old phones.
Didn't really touch upon the hinge. Is it serviceable at least? Does it flip, or does it flop? Or on a need-to-know-only basis?
Michael, you should daily this thing
I'll never get the tall skinny form factor it looks great closed but my hand already hurts looking at that screen
I like the look of the Motorola foldable the cheaper one
The phantom menace reference though 10:20
all these phones are way to slim when opened and standard cameras, they could make them a bit wider allowing for better battery and camera.
Please review more WearOS watches. Like the new Xiaomi watch.
Unihertz tank 2 kindly review sir with projector
Surprised that it didn't come with a phone holster
Here, in Australia, you can get a Moto Razr 40 for $990 (AUD) which makes roughly $645 (USD).
So, the Phantom V doesn't have such an "affordable" price.
this is for the us everybody knows everything is expensive in the us
I hope the OnePlus Open is good
They announced the southeast asia early bird price of just $430, really tempting price.
I listen to Techno...
10:01 Is that a Panos Panay reference?
Surprised seeing INR along with USD pricing ? Was there any specific reason for including INR ?
Because the phone is not available in the US and he based it off the INR pricing which was used by the company. Techincally it would cost $300 in the US since they don't have hefty import taxes.
9:29 Razr Minus :D
IT JUST GOES TO SHOW... That, IF, a small company can release a 'Flip phone' at a price around $/£600, THEN, the likes of Motorola and Samsung etc CAN do the same IF NOT cheaper(?) - around $/£500 (obviously with midrange specs)... IF these phone companies want us to get into the foldy/flippy market, then $/£800, 900, 1000+ prices ARE NOT the way to do it. PLUS, IF THEY DID, because they are bigger and more capable companies, we would ALSO enjoy OS/Software updates too...
So, WAKE UP Motorola, Samsung, Oppo and the like, let's see some decent 'Mid range' flippies at more REASONABLE prices!!!
😎🇬🇧
Well the normal razr40 is around the same price in india as this phone. So motorola allready does make a cheap foldable.... these prices are just recalculated from there india price without taxes, importcost, sellers etc counted in.... in Europe you always pay more for a phone because of taxes and special laws. I don't think this phone has a ce label which it needs to sell in Europe. Putting this label on a box/product cost money and most of these company's don't want to spend it on the label and that's why they don't sell outside there allready big market of africa and asia
I like how THIN it appears!
