The main reason highly intelligent people prefer to be alone is simple; The world is full of stupid people and it's difficult to find smart ones to pal around with.
When I was a teenager, as I have always liked language, I was beginning to learn english back in the 80´s. One day I was at home practicing reading a book in a loud voice then a friend from school showed up and heard me in my room doing that so he asked my mother what I was doing and she explained it to him. To me it was just something so common but to my friends it was rocket science. Of course some of my friends became very rich and I a teacher.... hahahah
Because it's statistically lonely at the top. There just aren't that many "peers" when you're in the top standard deviations of intelligence. There simply aren't that many people who are capable of making socializing fulfilling. Surface level small talk is fine for interactions at the grocery store or the water cooler at work, but once you've had a few of those, conversations, you've had them all. And when one tries to move conversations to a deeper level with 'normal' people, it's met with blank stares and hollow nods because they have nothing to contribute. The reason IQ is so often controversial is high IQ people genuinely are different people from the average, and the human impulse for group inclusion and compassion makes those at the top outcastes to the rest.
We don't prefer to be alone, we ARE alone.We see people doing things that directly harm themselves and others but do not have the ability to impart that understanding to them because none of the basic concepts we understand they see. Its like trying to explain the dangers of nuclear radiation to a cat. There is a real, actual difference in what we experience in life. We live in different worlds to them.
I had to write a letter to my 85 year old mum , and my sister, 2 years ago and told them to fk off and leave me alone , ive never wanted kids and ive never been 'ambitious' (a job to me is just a way to earn money so you can enjoy your time more) so for this i have been the families loser, and i put up with this in my 30s, in my 40s it started to get boring and in my 50s i developed more respect for myself than listen to these idiots so i wrote and told them , havent heard form them since and IT'S GREAT
Ditching people so you might feel better shouldn't be particularly categorized as GREAT. Everyone is human and full of BS. Too many people in life isn't good, too few people, either. Just focus on the balance.

Or simply a low tolerance of people.
Or a high intolerance to lactose.
