So this video saved my sanity. I was hitting everything in a pushed/blocking path, club face was wide open. I watched a lot of videos trying to figure out how to fix this in a way that worked for me, and this one is it. Bowed lead wrist fixed everything. So simple, wish I saw this earlier.
This single move cured my slice with woods and driver. Part of the thought I heard from another instructor that also helped me was to think "turn your knuckles (left hand) toward the ground through impact." It's way more consistent than having a cupped left wrist and trying to use a snappy release. Great video.
Hi Wally, thanks for the comment and for sharing. You are exactly right. This is what Clay talks about in The Move section the website. Here is the link if you want to check it out: topspeedgolf.com/courses/the-move/. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf Of course a cupped or bowed wrist is today's replacement for Hogan's supinated left wrist except he did not turn his wrist down on the takeaway, instead it was a continuation of his waggle
I used to flip at impact and usually hit the ball thin or fat. Today I took instruction and the PGA pro is teaching me this move. I hit the ball better and hope to groove this new swing with 7 more lessons.
Nice!
I suffer from thin shots, fat shots, lifting up, etc. About a week ago, I saw a video from someone else using a clothes hanger to get this feeling. This video is a great explanation to why this is crucial. All my irion shots are crisper now and the difference with my driver is amazing.
Thanks for sharing!
I needed this video earlier. I had a pro telling me this some weeks ago. I never know about this. I think this is the only video mentioning this bowed wrist problem. Thank you for sharing!! And fixing this gave my consistency a huge boost ;)
Used my iPhone to record my swing & saw that my club face was too open. Going to work on this today! Thanks Michael, Top Speed Golf!
Best of luck!
Tried this just messing around from watching someone do this in a video, and this was helping me hit a draw on my driver vs fade/slice very consistently. Pretty amazing little trick.
Nice work! 👍
Well done Michael, this is a good explanation of an important move that I'm trying to implement.I've always had a cupped left wrist at the top, which leads to breakdown of the wrists at the top, then an open face through the downswing into impact. Now, when I try to keep the face closed from the top like this, I pull hook if I stall my lower body. I find I need to keep my lower body/hips rotating more through the shot, then I get good solid compression and straight flight!Just gotta keep doing the reps!
That was a great lesson for me. Can't wait to try it out. I have been spraying it every direction and every type of shot; pushes, hooks, draws, fades, dreaded straight balls... I literally don't know where to aim right now. Originally, as in years ago, I'm came from slice-land so I'm sure my clubface is open on the downswing and the quality of my shot depends on timing. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Your advice on "finding the other guardrail" really resonates with me; I've been sneaking up on closing my clubface earlier for years and years. Thanks again.
This addresses my single worst problem. Im.right handed,, and my right wrist tends to take over and that's when I hit the slice hook or shank. My instructor and I've been working on this issue. It's a result of my baseball years.
Awesome!!! Totally amazing video.... This is the secret to great golf
I'd like your perspective on something: what I have done is gone to the top of the backswing, done the Dustin Johnson bowing, taken my right wrist off the club, lowered my bowed left wrist to the ground. Every time I find that the top of the club then is not pointing a 12:00, but instead about 10:30. It dawned on me that, at setup, I would put the club in my left hand, set it to 10:30 to begin with. If I do my backswing, when I get to the top, I'm bowed,. I can check it back on the ground: the club is facing 10:30. So in effect, I am "pre-bowing". This process takes complexity out of the backswing where Johnson sets his wrist to bow. I'm getting lag, a flatter swing, and de-lofted club. All the benefits of bowing. Why wait to the topswing to bow instead of "pre-bowing".?
The bowed wrist is a preset of the impact position. This may be the swing of the future
Hello
Glad you found this drill helpful! Keep up the good work and play well!
Just learned it tonight. Ffs. It straightened everything out for me effortlessly
Gonna try this. I’ve had lessons and the central theme was “everything looks good except you are flipping the club”. Couldn’t figure out how to fix it but this video makes a ton of sense. Especially since I played baseball in college.
Good stuff that makes sense and will work on it. Thanks
Wow!! This is my exact problem I just realized. I played baseball and do the same wrist hinge and I’m so inconsistent.
Nice video Mike! I am hoping you do an extended video on how to undo all the golf swing faults caused by baseball, as I think a lot of people who played highly competitive baseball might have the same issues as me. I am looking at my swing on slow mo video, and have what seems like way too much left wrist hinge at the top of the swing.
nevermind, just saw the ken griffey jr. video - you guys are great!
I tried it. It works very well and my distance has increased. When I started all my shots were going left. After some little adjustments I started hitting straight I just need more practice to groove it.
Omar Suleiman hey, what adjustments did you make to start hitting it straight? Hitting it left is my problem as well, and I cant seem to figure it out..
Bryan Evarts I know this is 11 months later but I currently use the bowed wrist method too. I started hitting snap hooks too when I began and it’s for a number of reasons. The first one could be an outside to inside take away, with the club being too closed (that was my problem). A fix I did was take it slightly more inside to out and I made it into a baby draw. Another fix I did was my club face at address. Some people’s club faces are too closed at address, or there is a lot of offset on the clubs you use. Try slightly opening the club face at address to make it more squared/or possibly even more “open at address.” The golf swing isn’t a uniform concept, just like throwing or pitching isn’t. Try to develop your own style, and experiment. Try what you’re best able to recreate. Consistency over looks. Hope that helps.
Get your fishing pole.. that pond is really active.. 1:38, 2:20, 2:23, 3:20, 4:10, 5:15, 5:56. Anyway, I'm willing to try this; however, do not want to close the club too early and catch the ball with the hozel. Thanks!
Hi Jim, thanks for the comment. You're closing the face early in the swing so that you can get forward shaft lean with a square club face. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Stumbled on this when I noticed I had a big cupped lead hand. The distance the clubhead moves when you go from cupped to bowed at the top of the backswing is pretty impressive. Quality and consistency of strike is way up, but I'm pulling left.
Swing more to the right
On the down swing, try and feel like you're touching your elbow to your right hip at the start. that helped me a lot. You can see this in DJ's swing as well if you watch some slow motions
If you have a strong grip , go to a weaker grip it should counter it some
Cupping by wrist has significantly improved my ball striking. I used to struggle with push shots / striking with an open face, and mimicing Dustin Johnson's bowing has really help me with hitting the ball straight.
Yooo this the sauce
Haha...thanks!
Bowed wrist was taught by Mike Austin, Mike Dunaway and Dan Shauger, the Austin swing is talked about in Mike Austin’s biography by Phil Reed.
Great tool .
What nobody talks about is that a bowed wrist also helps jam your right elbow in your side like it should be.
Try it
Hi TK, thanks for sharing your insight. It certainly does help with that. Hope you're playing great! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Nice, thanks. That is helpful, but what about it leads to hooking the ball of pulling the ball
dimpy deol the best swing video is that of Ben Hogan. Right elbow on the hip, swing starts from ground up, creating the lag and extending through the ball. Never took a lesson, 2 handicap now(was 0) when I played a lot, and learned to swing by watching the Ben hogan video a thousand times.
Damn right it does TK - it also stops you rolling your forarms in the takeaway and dragging the club inside. The bowed wrist fixed so many of my swing faults it's unreal!
Does release mean to straighten the wrist after contact? I’ve never understood the term release because I don’t feel like I’m holding anything to start with?
I see you give top level baseball and golf instruction. Well done sir!
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
From my experience the average golfer needs to simultaneously learn two other things: impact position with forward shaft lean and proper hip action. Proper hip movement fits perfectly with the DJ wrist set. I tried all last year to swing with left wrist bowed while using my old lifetime cruddy hip spin. Impossible to do. Once I watched the Athletic Motion Golf lesson on the pro vs am hip action I then was able to incorporate the bowed wrist. Shots now go straight with no effort. No more over the top with weak high cuts.
Thanks for sharing! Play well!
FYI, If you don’t have lag you’ll hook every shot but the feel and compression plus extra distance is amazing
Michael what is DJ doing to play a fade now with such a bowed left wrist in backswing and at impact? Great video!
His face is open to his path at impact.
this guy knows his shit
Hi Dano11000
Thank you for your comment! Keep watching!
the best way to get quick sense off it is close the club face at top then grab onto it ,,,,I had a problem with ball starting online and slicing away this fixed it ,,only thing is I ended up with strong grip
Great video! If working on this move, should I still be trying to get to the inside of the golf ball?
Thanks Jeff! That's a good feeling to have if you're trying to swing in to out with your club path or if you're wanting to get the face more open at impact. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I think the bowed wrist at the top helps consistency...in striking.
Hi John, it definitely can. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
When I simulate this bowing pre impact, it not only closes the face, but it also moves the sole to a relative toe down position. How does one negate this lie effect?
Hi Michael, great to hear from you! It should still be flat. Or I prefer most people to feel little heel down, since most struggle with the opposite. You can do either with a bowed wrist. Check these things.
1. You still want a little bend in the knees at impact.
2. You want the hips atleast 45 degrees open.
3. Feel like the handle is low.
I hope that helps!
I noticed in your video and in my own practice swing that it lays the club off quite a bit. Why is this and is that ok?
I ve got rid of my slices ,TQ very much
Awesome! Nice work!
You didn’t mention that this hurts like hell , my wrist is so sore .. lol but my slice is gone ! 🔥🔥
Hi Bryan, it shouldn't hurt. You might just be overdoing it. I was ease off of it.
Can a Cupped wrist lead to thin shots? I generally hit them strait, but poor compression lately. Poor distance. I feel like I’m bowing, but video says otherwise.
Still lack of the explanation about why and how on bow of left hand!
The key to a bowed back wrist is on what he does before takeoff. He sit back the hips and knees but let the pubic extend deeper and more frontward ,we know the wrists are aligned with the pubic and the wrists would pushed forward and downward.
Another feature is he first straight his leading leg then make it vertical to the knee. This makes the upper arm totally engaged with the blade bone and makes a high backswing possible.
The question remains why they are good for a powerful swing?
The power comes from two components, rotation and spining. The requirement for rotation is both hands and keeps both elbows closed to make the force consistent with the club shaft. You can see the left hand kept at outside and lower, untill the left shoulder goes up and makes the left arm stopped to move forward then he started to make a quick rotation with the right lower arm released and let wirst pulled up and right wrist pressed down along the shaft.
The bowed wrist then contributes to the spinning of the shaft with wider range when the left goes close to the body and right wrist goes out.
Spinning is different than rotation by both thumbs goes at same direction with fingers go to the different direction.
A rotation always have a backward shaft curvature, only spinning push the club head shoots forward.
Is it a reasonable explanation?
Thanks for sharing!
Can you bow the wrist a driver as well? I know DJ does it with great results, but when I've attempted to do it all I does is hit snap hooks.
I'm the rare golfer who bows my wrist with irons and wedges but I do not with the driver. i cut the ball too much when I now it with the driver. I've found more success not doing it but I weekend my grip slightly
When I try to bow the left wrist my right elbow have to go in ok fine.
But my wrist feels almost in cramp -I think I am not flexibil enough. ..when I try hogan style instead it feels more natural for me. Follow my body is the way. ...I guess. Doesn't DJ get some injuries? thanks for your video
No doubt that this is the most accurate way to play golf. The problem with it is that people give up on it because it feels "uncomfortable" and "unnatural" and if you want to hit the ball past your shadow you have to be either very strong or very flexible.
If strong, you do it the Jon Rahm way. He goes nowhere near parallel at the top , and powers his downswing using a "hitting" action. Helps that he is 6'2" and 220 lbs.
If you are Gumby flexible , you do it the Dustin Johnson way. He goes to parallel at the top with his driver. Try that with a ramrod stiff left arm , no lifting of the front foot and a bowed left wrist. He simply unwinds from the top. "Belly button to the target" is the only swing thought he needs on the downswing. Everything else follows automatically. Helps to be 6"4" and 200 lbs,.
Dustin's way is the more reliable/repeatable method , so work on your flexibility folks.
Here is DJ in action. Note his ramrod stiff left arm, his front foot flat on the ground and that ginormous 120 degree shoulder turn against a minimal hip turn. OUCH!! A chiropractors dream.
ruclips.net/video/mD3C2jfBRR8/видео.html
i usually slice the ball with my driver but now i bow my wrists and shorten my swing like Jon Rahm and i can hit it really stright, is this bad. thanks.
Thanks for sharing!
Can’t we just take our normal swing with a super strong grip?
Edit: rotating the club in our hands at address. Is it not easier than trying to add a new move?
What type of grip to promote this action? I heard a strong grip promotes a slight cup of wrist at the top.
Dustin has a very strong grip.
And also hits huge cuts when its out of sync.
To keep the wrist bowed stick a tee in your watch band lengthways down the wrist. A tip Piers Ward came up with for this drill.
Hi rojambeau, the tee in the glove does work for preventing your lead hand to cup, however, it also prevents the wrist to naturally cup after the straight line release when finishing your full swing. Here's a video that helps describe what the wrist is doing through impact. topspeedgolf.com/topic/how-to-stop-flipping-and-start-compressing-the-golf-ball/. Thanks for the post, keep on grinding my friend ~ Andrew | TSG Instructor
Oh, I agree and Piers would agree too I am sure. It was just a suggestion for a drill to ensure the wrist is being cupped in the right way, not to do full swings and through the ball. It was a *feel* thing. Cup the wrong way and you have a tee digging into your wrist. To be honest it was something I picked up on because I am left handed and have to translate everything you right handed instructors teach...lol. For me the cupped wrist is my RIGHT wrist. So the tee thing helped me "get it" oddly. Thanks for responding! For that I will subscribe. :)
Hi rojambeau, thanks for joining our team with TopSpeedGolf.com. I hope you are not overwhelm by the videos, I know I was when I first joined. I see where you are going with the tee in the glove drill, I believe it's a good short game drill since you do not finish in the full swing. As for the LH explanation, we try to use words that will not be pro RH or LH but when on camera it sometimes gets away from us, we are working hard everyday to correct that error ha ha ha. Thanks for the reply, keep on grinding my friend ~ Andrew | TSG Instructor
problem is, unless you can clear your hips like DJ, you will smother the ball with a closed face, DJ squares the face with a close face only because he is athletic enough to really clear the hip with all his lag.
I used to do this naturally, took 6 months off and couldn't do it , i can achieve ut without a golf club in my hand but not achieve it with a club in my hand .
Hold the bow (lock it) until past the ball......
Thanks!
Oh no the first**** video from you guys, surely Dustin Johnson is a very strong athlete and even he has a very strong top hand to achieve the "Dustin" effect. You guys dont seem to advocate a very strong top hand.
If you dont have a strong top hand you have to rely on your right side to try and emulate the Dustin position
When I bow my left wrist, I tend to be too closed at impact and start the shot left of target line. Any tips to correct this?
Hi Bryan, bowing the lead wrist is what squares the face when you have forward shaft lean. So, you're either over doing it or not getting enough forward shaft lean. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
What kind of grip do you use? Strong, neutral, weak?
Why not just have a strong grip?
You can do that but that doesn't necessarily fix the issue. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf thanks. I just feel that bowing of the wrist is too uncomfortable for me and I can't maintain it. Really feels weird. Feel more comfortable when my wrist is cupped in the backswing. Just need to turn more on the downswing I think.
D S, Not necessarily. If the hands are well ahead of the ball at impact, the club will be effectively squared, albeit somewhat delofted. I think this is how Tiger Woods hits his "stinger" long irons.
hogan did that 70 years ago, nothing new , he called it SUPINATION its the only way to square up the face
Boom! Thanks for sharing!
You are totally incorrect in claiming that you using the "Dustin Johnson move"and you are using a "reverse motorcycle move" which cannot allow a golfer to avoid using a left forearm supination action in the late downswing in order to square the clubface by impact - see perfectgolfswingreview.net/leftwristbowing.html
Forget golfing, get your fishing rod!
Worst advice ever.
Bad advice your forgetting tell everyone that you have to start the swing with your hands in that position you’re left hand and right hand has to be in a weak grip position otherwise your wrist will go back to normal during the swing. It’s also in the forearm not the wrist you’re wrist have no strength in a bowed position.
Anyone else think he was chicken to not end the video by firing in to that protected green behind him?
Haha, I think that green was only 50-60 yards away and it looks like Mike had a 7 iron. He would have had to take a half swing to get it on the green otherwise it would be in the woods over it. Thanks for the comment. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
I am completely lost , talk about complicated
Bend your wrist forward instead of back. That’s all he’s saying.
why does he sounds like hes crying
gawd, he sure does ramble on........get to the point man!
I disagree
Relax this is a great video
Seems unnatural. I swing like I do in baseball, let my body act as a single unit and I hit straighter than anything. Another compensation, and swing thought in my opinion.
Very difficult move , the bowed technique, definitely not for most people, its meant for people that have been playing this game from a young age and are very strong, bad advice to bow it, can screw a person up for life.
Thanks for the feedback. Play well!
This makes the club point to the left of tHe target.rubbish
Hi John, where the club is pointing at the top of the swing really isn't that important. It can cause some issues but you can shallow the club whether it is pointed straight, left or right. I'm not sure if that is what you meant but I hope that helped. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
your videos are too long, get to the point
Hi, thanks for your feedback Edward. This actually isn't even one of our long videos. We used to think that short videos were better but later found that the longer videos get more views. We don't intentionally make the videos really long but we don't try to keep them short. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Horrible. This type of instruction will hurt more people than it will help. Bowed wrist? Come on. Too many golfers have way too many idiosyncrasies too promulgate the use of "bowed wrist". The teacher should first identify proper grip, stance, swing paths ect. This one size fits all approach to teaching is almost an embarrassment.
