Well part of the secret for stable impact is knowing where the bottom of the arc in your swing is. We show you what happens when the arc moves in relationship to the ball and how that affects your stroke. Too shallow for tops, too steep for chunks; with the correct glide impact zone your shots will be just right. Learn how to skim the grass and make those pro-like shallow divots. Set up your glide impact zone and how to be consistent in golf.
I look forward to working with you much more in the future with Top Speed Golf. Good luck with your golf.

One of a hand full of great teachers on RUclips. After two months of learning the game, I understand what advice is good and what is questionable. Your lag videos especially caused me to be able to feel that great compression where the ball just leaps off the club head, it's a great feeling. And much of it for free here on the Tubes. I'm greatful, because getting into golf is expensive enough and im just not going to pay $150/hr like my local PGA pro is asking. Thanks a lot for the effort you've put forth here.
Thanks a lot! Glad to hear the lag is going well! That is the main reason I made the channel and the site. I wanted anyone to be able to afford good instruction. For in person lessons I charge $200/ hr., but for tons of video lesson I only charge $8/month. Plus there is a lot of free videos on here. Best of luck! Keep up the good work! ~Clay
Yes like Tiger Woods you are better than most. From a rocket science point of view, for a rocket to be stable the center of thrust must be ahead of the center of mass. Lag and proper timing of the weight shift can be thought of as a rocket where the center of thrust pressure is closer to the direction of the rocket than the center of mass of the club head. Also the center of power applied by the body needs to be ahead of the center of mass of the moving inertia of the physical mass of the club and body combined. The flat spot of the swing increases the margin of error and simplifies the trajectory of energy transfer into a straighter line. When I build custom hobby rockets I attach the engines towards the top of the rocket to guarantee that the center of thrust is in front of the center of mass of the rocket, and it works every time, and they go straight as a arrow regardless of the mass of the rocket as long as the engines are powerful enough to achieve lift off and powered flight.
clay, i just cleared an area in my yard of snow and hit orange wiffle balls off a mat using your instruction and it went well. see you in the spring.
Nice!
About time someone showed us the well articulated drawings etc... You might be the best teacher I've ever seen!
Thanks a lot Brett!! I will let my video editor Race know that you liked his work. He did a great job with this one! ~Clay
I've been struggling with squaring up the face and stumbled across your video. It made so much sense to me, I went straight out and played with this flattened swing without doing any of the training exercises. I did leave the face open a couple of times (which you mention), but overall actually saved strokes on my first try (never happens as a rule) - mainly on "fat" swings that gave me 80-90% distance instead of lost shot. I was quite close to this without knowing it, just giving myself 1/2" instead of the 4-5 inches that are actually available with the swing flattened. (I did already have a slight tilt back and reasonable hip rotation). Main benefit is still massively increased confidence, knowing the swing does not have to be perfect. (I'm senior Martin Ayers student, fits perfectly with his principles)
Really well explained.
Indeed great teacher. EXPLAINS ideas, not just stating golf cliches. I never understood "cover the ball", "hit down on the ball", etc. Happy to have found this channel.
Hello
Thank you again for your kind words!
Been playing for many years. 5 hdk when younger but never felt impact like now. Never used my left shoulder like shown here. I'm 76 and now hit a few drives in the 275 range. Thx Ballard.

Epic video. One of the best I've ever seen on golf instruction.
Thanks very much. Play well :-)
Epic video? Really
This has to be the best instructional video I have seen. Got me interested in golf again.
Nice! Glad to help! ~Clay
Dear Clay, after watching some of your videos, I particularly love the way you explain the LAG, I try to make practice with the LAG. Good advice! Keep up the good job.
greetings from Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
6 : 45 A Ha ! Moment for me ! Thanks Clay !
JohnJ866 If I could like this comment 1 million times I would. I was literally coming down to say 6:45 to 6:55 needs to be a viral golf meme for all chunkers of the golf ball.
Stumbled across your page Clay. Very helpful as I've fallen into some old bad habits but these videos have helped immensely. One needs to put in the work to get desired results. Thanks
You're a miracle worker Clay! I was ready to give up the game!
+monzx3 Haha, I don't know about that. Hope your doing better now! ~Clay
Thanks for the video.... finally an instructor that explains things very clearly - thank you so much
I really enjoy the way you explain it and the drills... Now I just gotta learn how to implement it through practice into my game. I've only played for 3 months so I really hope it isn't too late (seen alot of people having trouble with their swings already)
Clay is absolutely an amazing teacher for being so young. Truly appreciate these videos that are practical and actually makes SENSE. Cant thank you guys enough for these vids.
Hi SaintsCheat, Yea Clay has worked hard to master the skills you see and he hopes your can do the same. Thanks for the positive feedback, let us know how your game comes along. Keep on grinding my friend ~ Andrew | TSG Instructor
the only channel I completely rely on watching.
Thanks Sam!
I found a lot of great and very detail, useful information in your channel. Thank you very much !!!!
Finally learned how to golf from this instruction! Thanks!!
Great video as always!!!
Great how to swing golf video, I really enjoy it. Thank you for teaching us on youtube.
+Anthony Wijaya Thank you Anthony! Great to have you on the team!!
Fantastic video!
Thank you very much!
Best one yet! Thanks so much!
Fantastic lesson!
Thank you for your interesting video, Mr. Ballard.
I have the following question.
After your piece of advice, as an amateur I'm a bit puzzled, now, because in practice you advise to sweep the irons more, which is the kind of swing that is normally advised for hybrids/woods... Even something like the spine tilted backwards is what is normally taught for woods, whilst is not generally mentioned for iron play (at least for the 6-9 irons).
Other golf pros generally advise to move the irons along a more upright swing plane, and to 'compress' the ball more steeply.
I understand your point when you say that we could have more margin of better contact with the ball if we sweep the club instead of doing a steep downswing: I'd simply like to be sure that irons are manufactured in a way that can really permit or concede a sweeping swing.
Thank you for your help
+Roberto Rovida Hi Roberto, great post. You are exactly right. That's why I wanted to make this video. Most pros will teach to hit down more vertical with an iron.
If you look at pros, this isn't happening though. The average PGA tour pro takes a divot that resembles a dollar bill in size and is very thin. Like taking a scalpel and shaving off the turf down to the roots of the grass. If it is wet, you will see bigger divots than this. Or for special situations, the divot may be deeper.
I wouldn't call this sweeping, since we are cutting turf. It is more like coming in and taking off all the turf above the root of the grass.
The average pro hits down on a pitching wedge about 5 degrees and down on a 3 iron about 3 degrees. One minute on a clock is 6 degrees, so this is all very shallow. You hit down on a 3 wood roughly 3 degrees also. So there is very little change, although technically you hit down less as the club gets longer, it is only the difference of 1/3 of a minute on a clock between pitching wedge and 3 wood.
A different study showed that the bottom of the swing (which will be farther forward the steeper into the ball you swing) for different players. This measures how many inches in front of your ball was the bottom of your arc. Here is what they found:
Major Winner 4.16 inches in front
PGA Pro 4.55
Mini Tour Player 4.58
Scratch Golfer 4.78
10 Handicap 4.98
20 Handicap 5.54
30 Handicap 6.5
So in a nutshell, higher handicappers hit down on the ball more which makes the low point farther forward.
Great questions and a good topic to talk more about!! Hope this helped!
Clay
Great lesson here. Important stuff. Thanks.
Thanks Robert!
This is a really great lesson. Thanks.
nice video Clay. your explanation is detail and clear. love your video. do you have any slow motion shot of your iron and driver swing for front view and side view?
Nice tip. I am hitting more consistent shots. Thank you
Awesome! Keep up the good work! ~Clay
great lesson!
Such a great video
really helpful good lesson!
Clay great. Video. How do you get deep enough on the down swing to make a divot. When I do hit the ball the proper distance I don't get deep enough to make a divot. Can you help?
thanks for the video! One questions. Which club should I apply this secrete to? 7 iron? All of them? Thanks again~!
You've got it my friend. Being a tennis teacher, I DO KNOW that perfection comes out of REPETITION. It is true that 100 reps give us the time to assimilate and 'DIGEST' the information. And practice makes perfect, or close to it, right?
im ya big fan of ya instructions clay !!!
+Johny Jmc Thanks a lot Johny! Great to hear from you! Play well. ~Clay
You're the best.
Thanks!
Love the videos
thank you !!!
No problem Sam!
Really love you vids and especially your drills. Remember though Clay, belt and shoes should match ;)
Haha, good point. I'll remember the white belt from now on! ~Clay
Thanks
Clay, would you say the left shoulder moving up is what causes the hand path to go up and create the flat spot. So would it make more sense to make sure the left shoulder goes up instead of manipulating the hands?
Hi John
Thank you for the question. It is very similar especially when our hands, arm, and shoulder are connected and working the same. Hope that helps and keep up the good work!
Yea lift your shoulder and hands on the follow through. Good luck with that. Lol
handy tip for those who are unaware : pause the video at the point of interest then press . or , to single frame-step the shot.
Hi Clay, great video here.
Just quick question. In this video and some others of yours, the left hip seems to open outward and a bit move back into the center of body while I can see there is a lot of weight staying in your right foot. This means it would cause the weight is still hang back at center of the body, not forward. Not sure I am right. If so, does it suppose to have majority weight shifted into the left foot at impact?
Thanks,
+Boyd CC Thanks a lot! You have a great eye for the swing. I used to hang back for years and hit off my right foot. Much better now, but I have a tendency to keep the right foot down to long (something I was taught to do on purpose that was wrong). I used to be well into the follow through before it would come off the ground. Hope your doing well! ~Clay
Clay, do you have any Top Speed golf coaches in Dallas? LOVE your videos, but need hands-on help.
Hi John, hope you are doing well. We don't have any instructors in Dallas. We just have one doing in-person lessons right now in the Orlando area. If we do get someone in Dallas doing in-person lessons then we'll send out an email to all of our All Access members with the information. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
The body should always lead the arms and hands. Keep the body rotating in front of the arms and hands and maintain your angles and you will play some pretty decent golf. Watch Ben Hogan's swing, he was the best at it.
Hi, thanks for sharing. I agree 100%. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
On address, can you preset your upper body such that the right shoulder is really low and the lower body ahead of the upper body?
Hi Jancen, you want to have some tilt away from the target but be fairly balanced at address. If you preset the way you are saying then you'll have a lot of weight on your trail foot. This will make it more difficult to get momentum going to your trail side in the backswing and make it more difficult to load up. Play well! Quentin | TST Instructor
I think what he means to say is that professionals or single digit handicappers produce a dynamic Swing Arc that has a larger Radius Of Curvature in the Impact Zone. If you produce the Arc with a flat spot in the Impact Area, you would feel a Big Jerk in your swing right before you hit the ball as the Arc went from being curved to being flat.
Hi Luke, you are exactly right. It's not going to be an exact flat spot. Thanks for watching. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
can you do a video on scapula moves and muscles ? thanks
+Lu lz I will put that on the list of videos to make. Hope your playing great! ~Clay
Thanks Sir
Anytime!
Thanks excellent awareness
Only golf teacher I've found that has anything to say about spine angle. I've found by accident that when I feel like my head is slightly behind the ball at impact, I hit straight. Otherwise I hook or hit the near the heel, caused by the same thing, bad path and leaning the lead shoulder forward.
Thanks for sharing!
Hey guys, I'm new but please explain how this works. I see here on set up that the club face is square at address BUT on contact the hands are about 8 inches "forward". Now if you take that position it alters the angle of the club face on impact.(the club face is more open) It has to for the two angles are different! Maybe I'm not explaining myself properly but I've noticed a marked difference there and I've wondered should I be closing the club more on set up?
Hi Paul, this is what we talk about in The Move section on the website. You want to bow that lead wrist to turn the handle down and square the face when you get forward shaft lean. Here is the link to a video where Clay talks about his on the website if you're interested: topspeedgolf.com/topic/compress-the-heck-out-of-a-golf-ball/. Play well! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Wait I thought the upper body tilted back was bad.
Wow a lot of stuff this guy says like disproves the other stuff said from other channels like Meandmygolf and such. I can swear Meandmygolf talked about swinging in a circle
Corek BleedingHollow in general that’s correct. Clay is just very good about going in depth and explaining all the prices.
Clay gives us the whole picture instead of just a piece.
I’ve only been playing golf 3 months. Clay has me shooting under bogey KD driving 290.

Pro golfers hit the ground 4 to 5 inches in front of the ball (after the ball). None of them hit the ball and ground at the same time.
Mark Randall all pros hit ball first then the ground.....maybe a short bunker shot 4 to 5 inches behind the ball....can you imagine hitting 500 hundred or more balls a day and the impact on the body this would create....short career.
Did you read my post correctly? I'm not advocating hitting the ground before the ball. When I wrote in front of the ball, I mean in front, not behind, not before... after.. 4 to 5 inches after the ball... ;-)
My bad..... thought u meant on the down swing!
Gee gee k mate what are u talking about
"Pro golfers hit the ground 4 to 5 inches in front of the ball" ??? Whether you actually mean before or after impact, you're talking a huge amount of horseshit.
Check out "Jordan Spieth Great Golf Shot, Cool Divot Extreme Slow Motion" (watch?v=skaYXnQ7iXY)
The slow-mo at 0:25 shows *precisely* the shallow arc Clay is talking about at 3:07 in the above video
lag: the ingredient for huge blocks and snap hooks.
I am not 100% sure what you want Me to do at the first excercise? Keep my arms across my chest and bent backvards and rotate?
a do a swing review on me , please
I love your videos but this isn't one of them. This is why most golfers are basket cases. Flat spot?Lift hands on follow through? Tilt your back on the follow through?
Your diagram makes your flat spot look about 1 foot long. Really silly. I get the basic point of you video but I think you're chasing ghosts here.
Hi, thanks for the feedback. It's not technically a flat spot but it is ideal to get the club to level out to a certain degree through impact. This is what all the best ball strikers in the world are doing. Thanks for watching. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Great lesson!
