    How would you like to know how to increase your lag without hurting your swing and pulling the club down? When you pull the club down you open the door for club casting and burning up your lag. It's not always bad to pull the club, but it can be if you do it the wrong way. Let's take a look at what the club is doing and the proper motions from the top of the swing, building lag, and through contact.
    I look forward to working with you much more in the future with Top Speed Golf. Good luck with your golf.

    You have indeed fixed my driving. One thing I wish you’d do more of is playing your swing a few more times in slow motion from all different angles. Yes, I can stop and rewind over and over I guess but it makes it easier if you do it for me. I’m a very very visual learner and this is the best thing to help me in making my swing as nice looking as yours. Thanks. Love these videos.

    Hands down the best lesson lag. I have been search for lost speed all winter. I figured out I was trying to create speed the wrong way. Went from 93mph to 108-110 driver speed. With some practice and better timing I could achieve 110-115 easily with this move. Excellent explanation Clay.

    Amazing, I have been messing about for 6 years since I started golf without realising this and it made things so easy,especially the horizontal check point and dropping the right arm to ribcage from the top. Works well and this is a great tutorial, well done Clay !!!!

    Clay, I gotta tell ya - you're about the best I've seen on here with breaking this stuff down very simply for me to understand. I love the reinforcement mini clips within your clips that show how the swing looks in slow motion so we can get the look of it while absorbing what you're saying and demonstrating. Great job and please keep it up! Can't wait to hit the range tomorrow and give this a go. My lag in all my clubs has been my Achilles heel for sure. I feel like I'm sacrificing so much distance on casting as well as never hitting the sweet spot (I predominantly hit inside the toe). Thanks for the simple yet thorough videos!

    Lag is simply the science of levers. When all 5 levers are pulled in a common plane in DS
    lag is the effect.
    Ben Hogan understood, that anatomically it is impossible to cast when all 5 levers are pulling in a common plane.... the SLOT "worked every time, he said"

    I really enjoy your videos but this video raises a lot of questions. The center of mass moves further away from the accelerator (my hands) as I swing the club. At impact that force is no longer ounces of force but pounds as you have stated. I will assume the greater the acceleration the further away from the hands the COM becomes, it's no wonder making consistently clean contact with a golf ball using up to 14 different clubs with different COMs is HARD. Not only that but having a starting COM that is too far up the club shaft (nearer to the hands) has to have a negative impact on the force the club head applies to the ball, thereby sacrificing distance? Just curious, do the pros get their clubs "adjusted" to align COM so all, or at least their irons, have the same starting COM ??? I never really thought about any of this until I watched your video.

    To let you in on one of the great secrets of good golf,one golfer gets more distance because he uses his hands for power, by whipping the club head through the ball with the hands and delivering a tigerish lash, while the other fellow is trying to get distance by using his body.
    The long hitter gets his body in position so his hands can work effectively. The old greats of golf like Tommy Armour knew this. Modern golf has become too body orientated, hence there has been little improvement in technique but great improvement in equipment to allow for good scoring.

    Your video is a walk off home run. I love the way you use science combined with the feel in your body. Great video. I always wondered if my grip the club lightly, if the fingers in the left lead hand actually stretch a little at the top of the back swing.
    Keep up the great work, I hope some of your other video are as great as this one.
    I am very picky about videos and I rarely agree so much as I have here in the video we are all watching right now.
    The only thing I still do not get is flattening the shaft at the start of the down swing. Rickie Fowler does it, but Kenny Perry seems to steepen his shaft at the beginning of his down swing. However Kenny gets his body closer to the ball as the end of his back swing and at the beginning of his down swing, In so doing his is creating space for his upper body to release his upper body coil more on plane of the ball shoulder plane. In defense of the video we are watching Kenny has a very complicated swing, and difficult to reproduce, although if you want to hit a pull draw every time like he does, then that is one way to accomplish it. Rickie Fowler flattens his shaft on the down swing, and is a more simple swing then Kenny"s.
    I am guessing that one reason to flatten the shaft during the down swing is so that I will not pop up my teed us Driver Shots. I guess flattening my shaft on the down swing with help my to not hit fat shots.
    Ok, after reflecting on everything, I think that you flatten your shaft angle on the down swing when you hit a driver. The shorter the shaft of the club, the less you flatten your swing plane on the down swing. I think that some players actually steepen their shaft angle on their down swing with their short irons. Most certainly it is easier to flatten the shaft angle on the down swing with their driver than with their pitching wedge (at least for me it seems that way when I observe PGA player videos).
    Good Regards
    Luke

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks Luke! Really glad to hear you liked it so much.
      Yeah, Kenny does it a bit differently than most. He steepens the club late in the backswing and then flattens it as he starts down.
      As you mentioned, the shorter the club, the more upright the shaft, so yes, there will be less flattening, I agree with you.
      Hope your playing great!

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад

      Yes, you use your wrists, but you want to fully release (when the club splits the forearms) out in front of the ball. Here is a great video where Clay covers this: ruclips.net/video/URTIrVQOJJE/видео.html Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor

    Do you think your hips and shoulders should be a little more open at contact? And by throwing the club with your hands just before contact, do you think your hips and shoulders rotate a little bit less than they should and you lose a little bit of power as a result? And do you think you keep your right leg straight just a little bit too long during the downswing which hinders the hip rotation in my opinion? Other than this, I agree with everything you said. Your videos are tremendous.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 лет назад +1

      Hi, thanks for posting. Your average Tour player is going to have the hips 40-50 degrees open at impact and the shoulders 10-12 degrees open at impact. As long as the club is releasing out in front than it doesn't matter that much how much the hips are opening up. Clay get's about a 45 degree hip rotation and 120 degree shoulder rotation. We measured this with sensors. He is in good shape there and gets about 118 mph club head speed usually with a fairway finder swing. Hope you're playing well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    • @wgb8210
      @wgb8210 6 лет назад

      Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard He has a tremendous swing, and I have no doubt he can blast his drives more than 300 yards from time to time. I just think he could squeeze out a few more yards without losing any accuracy by relying on a little bit more body rotation and a little bit less arm swing. Notice how his hands finish so close to his head at the end of his follow through. To me, that suggests that his hands are getting a little bit out in front of the rotation of his body and are wrapping around his body a little bit too much which may cause him to lose some power, in my opinion. I think he is throwing his hands at the target just before contact (he even admitted it, I think) and this is not something the better pros do, I don't think. Nor do the longer hitters finish with their hands so close to their heads. Maybe I'm completely wrong. And maybe this is just an idiosyncratic aspect of an outstanding swing with which he is very comfortable and would likely not gain enough yards to justify trying to fix something that is either not broken or only very slightly cracked at most. Just a passing thought, that's all. (After a closer look, I think he would get a little bit better rotation and a little more power if his spine was tilted just a little bit more towards the ball at contact. His spine is a little bit too upright, this accounts for the flatter follow through and a slight loss of power in my humble estimation.)

    Manipulating the hands to create lag could actually lead to power loss and inconsistency. Perhaps a better way to create lag is to feel like you are pulling the right elbow down from the top of the backswing and then through towards the target. (external rotation)

    Clay, why not just go with a flatter take away? This sets it up so that you achieve the shallowness on the downswing without the complications of “turning the knob” that a lot, if not most, weekend golfers have difficulty doing consistently. I’ve experimented and had some success with it in eliminating my horrendous slices but what’s the downside?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 лет назад

      Hi Gabriel, the main reason is that it's hard to create much speed with a flat swing. This is why you'll never see a long drive competitor with a flat swing and you see very few pros. Swinging flatter can make it easier to shallow the club. It's about finding a happy medium that works the best for you. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 лет назад

      Hi, thanks for the comment. I do agree that it is easier to implement swing changes in your technique if you don't play too. You can play good golf many times and work on swing technique. The key is keeping the practice tee separate from the first tee. You need to go out on the course with the swing you feel confident in which is not going to be the one where you are trying to implement the new change. Your body just doesn't know how to move this way yet and hit the ball solid. Once you get more comfortable with it on the range then you can take it to the course. I hope that helps. Play well! Hi.....Yes im the GolfMyth buster.
    Lag.......? So you want use stiff shaft and then do all this and struggle your behind off to achieve ......"LAG"
    Why not just use flex shaft and get your lag for free.......Comon guys!
    You will argue....yeah but this and yeah but that.
    Im biblical! Go and proof yourself. Take a Driver with weak flex and hit the damn ball. I dare you.
    See what happens.....Ohh so it fade....Then adjust your swing.....to compensate!
    Lot of myths in golf that acctualy complicate it for players.
    With spinal cord fusion and limited spinal(28% less) turn....I adapted my swing. I dont suport the left arm straight myth.
    Connecting that to consistancy is just a theory!
    Most golfers cant achieve the straight vertical left arm...club perfect horizonal on top. It complicates golf......setting unrealistic demands...resulting in negative feedback! It takes REPITION.....PRACTICE......10 OOOs of shots to achieve a skill. I am convinced with the years of effort Tiger...Rory.....Phil..Rahm have dedicated and acnieved.....(Modern, popular swing dynamics).....that they would have done the same....had they started of with unconventional(arms only) type of swing. NOT KEEPING LEFT ARM STRAIGHT THROUGH OUT SWING.
    Golf has become showbiz.....looks....photo finish...media trends....brands.....and the IMAGE......is dominant.
    Lets see if my unconventional swing land the ClaretJug! Stick around till St.Andrews 2021.

      I am relatively new to golf, but get out on the course 4-5 a week. I did not become consistent until I straightened my left arm and slowed my swing considerably. I even introduced some lag and it did help me. I agree with you that it is a hard thing to master and may not be for every one. No, I did not hit 10,000's of shots. I just perform some of the lag exercises while I am on the course. Two years ago I needed a 5 iron from 150 yds out. Now I use my 9 iron. It still amazes me how I can hit the ball further with a slower more controlled swing. I attribute some of that to lag. In your defense, I see plenty of golfers with very awkward swings who hit the ball a mile with accuracy and would struggle with lag. I am also an avid body builder and have found I no longer have the back issues I used to have when swinging harder and faster. These videos have helped me immensely and have enabled me to more relaxed with my swing.

      Lag happens.....you can not really prevent it.....unless you swing 3mph.
      If you throw your lower body through first....botoms up....your shoulders and arms naturaly play catch up.
      My bent left arm theory is misinterpreted. At adress and tnrough impact......my L arm is straight. I leverage(bent) it during the other 70% of my swing.
      So 30%......of the duration of swing its straight (when it matter......through impact)......
      This enable the whipp-lash effect......when a whipp crack.......its because of all energy being released in split second.
      A jab in boxing!......its only straighten out on opponents chin.
      Look Calvin Peete....10yr in a row driving accuracy on USPGA tour.....nr.1.
      He had crooked left arm....look ytbe videos
