I just got my first Whippet, first dog since the one I had when I was a little kid, a boston terrier. I absolutely love how whippets play fetch - such retrieval/sight hounds. "Looooooook at me! I got it! I saw it, I ran and got it, now I'm gonna run around for a bit and show you this awesome thing I retrieved, then I'm gonna come over to you and drop it! Cus I got it for you!!!!" I lovemy doggo. Long live Alfred! Named after Alfred the Great of Wessex!

Living in a rural arable farming area, I've been able to bring up my whippet off-lead most of the time (and he gets it when its time to clip up). But there are wild deer which he goes nuts for to chase and could get himself in serious trouble if they ever turned around. So I purchased a lure machine to redirect its urges. He and his sighthound mates couldn't be happier even though they are bright enough to know its a bag on a reel of string.

He is such a beauty ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ And I find it very good that you make it clear where the weak/strong points are regarding such a beautiful runner and hunter! For example that you say you pick fenced areas or areas without too much going on. As much as I love to see these beautiful dogs running, for me as forest lover looking for lost places this would not work, as my darling would have to be fairly uninterested in other wildlife around him, or I would constantly be in search of him. It is so important, as you have said, to understand that there are thousands of years of breeding in working dogs such as Louis, and he cannot go against his genes. Greetings from Berlin Germany 🤗

My whippet Banjo is 14 weeks old and I am so proud of him. He has learnt so much in the 6weeks we have been together. He is a wonderful companion and has a lot of love to give. He has the colouring of a Tasmanian Tiger which is most appropriate as we live in Tasmania! Occasionally I carry him in a shoulder and people ask me about my “ rescue joey “!

I've done exactly the same thing with a treat instead of a ball a whistle is always best as it can be heard a distance away in windy conditions. My girl just isn't interested in chasing a ball, she loves a chase with other dogs. Only time I have trouble is when she has a squirrel treed.

Our much-loved whippy Maggie (who also happens to be our very first dog) passed away very recently about a week before Xmas. We picked up her ashes from the Vet on Xmas day, and ever since then I’ve been looking on RUclips for Whippet videos to try to cheer myself up. It’s really wonderful/comforting to see you, and sweet Louis sharing such a wonderfully strong bond together.
Also, I’m surprised to see Louis be so brilliant at fetching... our dear Maggie refused to return toys/balls, but her recall was particularly fab after the puppy stage.

Starting indoors is helpful. I train my Whippet mix with a ball and I train him in retrieving in the manner of game retrieval. Make sure you hold the ball to your eye and force him to make eye contact before you throw the ball. I say "go get it" when I throw the ball and then pat my thigh and say "come here". Whether he drops the ball at my feet or I grab it from his mouth, I say "give it". When I am done with a retrieval session, I drop the ball on the ground and say "all yours".
This is overkill for a pet but still worth it to get them to a higher and more accurate standard of compliance. This method is designed to train dogs to retrieve small game and not eat it in the process. the part where you drop the ball and say "it's all yours" is a way of letting the dog know when he gets his share of the kill. Were I to take my dog rabbit hunting, he would get one of the rabbits all to himself at the end of the hunt.
It is a means of triggering some very old instinctive behavior patterns that is pleasing for the dog. Dogs didn't evolve to just sit around all day and be petted! If you want a happy dog, you have to find ways of tickling those ancient behavioral pathways. It's also good to train your dog to bring mice and rats to you instead of eating them on the spot and possibly getting sick from the vermin.
I have similar philosophies about raising children. Technology has evolved a lot faster than we do. I am a proponent of teaching children how to hunt and survive in the wild. I believe in martial arts training and contact sports. Without such activities, I know I would have been bored and depressed growing up. Whether or not I use those skills in life is rather irrelevant. My reptilian brain demanded as much and my self confidence soared every time I did a flying tackle on the rugby pitch. Then there was fencing... There is nothing more rewarding than beating a much older and more experienced opponent with pure resolve!

Having had my four-year-old whippet for two weeks she is slowly getting used to a routine. I am having problems with her running up to dogs to say hello. She is slowly getting better when I say no and pop her onto her leash until the dog is out of sight. She understands no and stays, however, I have to constantly say come when I recall her. She does play but loses interest in ball throwing. Brilliant video of an obedient whippet.

I'm yet to find a toy that interests him more than chasing dogs, considering a ball on a string after watching this!

Just wanted to share something I happened on by chance while searching for how to keep my dogs safe off leash. It’s called the “Really Reliable Recall” training protocol and it is perfect for sight hounds (or any breed) as it was created by Leslie Nelson, a sight hound aficionado. I found it on Dog Wise in downloadable booklet and video-I’m not affiliated with this website or the training protocol in any way, just sharing something I found helpful. In short, it teaches the dog a conditioned response or reflex of whipping the head around from any distraction and running straight back to you. You train under controlled conditions where the dog will always be successful, and avoid using it in real life-except in a true emergency, in order to keep it sharp and ready for emergency use. I’ve trained two dogs using the RRR with excellent results that twice saved us from a potential wreck involving horses. It’s great fun to train, all positive, and the dogs loved it too. Plus (and this is really big!) it makes your everyday recall stronger. Highly recommend. Thank you s for sharing your whippet journeys with us! Your dogs are clearly so well loved and cared for, and your landscape is absolutely spectacular. Your information is so pleasantly delivered too. What a great spokesperson you are for whippets!

Got some good tips from you re whistling when he picks up the ball to encourage coming back, which my one year old still struggles with, he gets bored and leaves the ball a long way off because he’s seen something more interesting. I shall try your method now. Thanks.

At first, thanks for the amazing video! I love Whippets, we always had em, when i was little but even now we have one. He is 5 years old but to be honest i never did any training with him, he grew up with a dobberman(not with us) and he is always very very full of tension and he is also shy and scared(high hairs on back) when he see others dogs, i keep him short because i don't want him to snap, most of time he just bark when he see dogs even on a distance, but barking is becoming less. But i never did any training with him, not this recall training either which i would love so much for him, because i think he would have the most amazing time in his lovely dog life ever! But here in The Netherlands where i'm at there is not really a safe place where i can let him run(as far as i know, because dogs can walk loose) ps: when he is with my mother in the woods he love to be loose with my other small dog and they love it and listen. But he don't run that far behind a ball, you have a tip? Sorry for the long message i'm from Holland and maybe i explain myself to slow sorry.

Great video Dave, I really need to find a fenced off enclosure to train my deafy lol. As I was saying before, the rules change when he gets a taste of freedom, off into the sunset and his favourite toy is no match for that :(
Only dog I ever had to do that plus the only deaf dog I've ever had.
I see him as a dog with little future or ending up with three legs ( traffic accident ) if I'm not careful.
Anyone who knows him agrees with me on this and I'd hate him to be the cause of a serious accident, it would be hard to forgive myself as it would be my fault knowing his want to roam.
Great to see how you trained Louie Dave, he's a great dog! repetitive training is definitely the best kind. 👍👍👍

It’s all to do with how you train them it needs to be as early as possible
People also tend to be to soft with them too which doesn’t help
A long training lead is useful to help train recall

My girl Coola likes to chase birds - Hadedahs - and if she goes off I command no, here and she will return and go where I direct. We don't have parks or open areas where she can run so I have to have control. They say you can't do obedience but she can and "manwork" with her favourite rope toy. Very different to the German Shepherds I bred and trained but very sweet. Likes cats, horses and does not chase chickens - just Hadedahs!

How does Laurie react to other dogs? Mine is OK for the most part, but if he sees another dog, he's off like a cannon ball, and I usually have to go where he has gone to get him back - and what he covers in 10 seconds is a long walk for me. Another dog is _always_ more attractive than anything I can offer him. He used to be the same with strangers, but he's much better now - though I think that's probably a function of getting older. He's around 18 months now.

Very interesting video, and I take your point about dog owners trying to train their dog by having a conversation with them. ;-)
I'm curious whether you think all whippets and lurchers will chase prey ... it's the only reluctance I have, as I am limited around here in terms of open areas to let a dog off lead. I also am concerned about dealing with a massacred squirrel (or cat)! Does Louie search out wildlife in the garden? I have frogs in the undergrowth in my garden - similar scenario; would be mortified if a frog got marmalised.

    • @onemanandhiswhippet
      @onemanandhiswhippet  5 лет назад +3

Hi David thanks for your comment 👍 I’ve never see any sighthound not Want to choose something Louis does like to chase squirrels and never catch them and is not over fond of cats too however we do have frogs in our garden quite a lot and Louis is scared of them (and it is funny to see) The other thing to consider is most dogs particular retrievers and spaniels will also want to Chase things and a lot of controlling that is down to good training from an early age
Hope that helps please check out my other living with a whippet videos they may also help you.
All I can say is of all the different breeds and shapes of dogs I would also take a whippet due to their intelligence their nature and easy to look after .

@@onemanandhiswhippet Grand, thanks for your (quick!) reply. I was owned by a rescue Labrador for 14 years, and now I am retired wish to find another canine companion. I agree with you about training, and Suzy (my rescue Lab) was very well-behaved thanks to my persistence and her good nature. I do a lot of urban cycling as well as hiking and one reason I'm thinking of a whippet is the possibility of fitting a basket to the front of my urban steed so I can take my new pal along with me (have looked into various safe methods for transporting dogs on a bike). A Labrador would be too big to attempt transporting by two wheels! I love the calmness of whippets - Suzy (my Lab) was like a piece of the furniture except when running miles around the hills with me. She had been rescued after an abuse situation, which I think was why she was so subdued and very "passive".
I've been working my way through your videos and am enjoying seeing how Louie fits in with your adventures. He's a star. It's that combination of million miles an hour outside but chilled out inside that I really like about the whippet. Everything I've seen in your videos encourages me (and makes me laugh regularly!)

He ignores my calls when he's chasing other dogs. I think I'll try the whistle. Let's say you always had to keep him on a leash at all times do you think he would still be happy? I want to get a whippet, I'm a 100% commited to taking it out each day to the park for exercise as long as it needs. but what it might do to other animals if it runs of scares me a bit. I will take it to dog school but if he still has poor recall I just want to know if it's still ok to keep him on the leash all the time at a park. Im an avid runner so will do my best to run with him but this will obviously be at a human pace.
