India - Darjeeling Railway 2006. Part 2 - The Climb Begins

- Taken from 12 year old tapes. Please excuse any quality issues.
This is a look back at the second part of my second visit to this fascinating narrow gauge line. In 1881, the line was completed from Siliguri junction, on the broad gauge main line, all the way up into the Himalayan foothills to the summer camp of Darjeeling. In its 55 mile length, the line rises from 100 metres above sea level to around 2300 metres above sea level. The 2ft gauge 0-4-0 saddle tanks are surprisingly powerful and make a very distinctive sound as they blast their way up the mountain sides.
In this sequence, the powerful little B Class tank loco starts the climb up into the Himalayas. The track twists and winds its way up the mountain side, through the forests of the lower foothills, with the sound of the steam loco echoing around the valleys.

I will always look back on nostalgia. Period!!
It's nice to look back on the full route being used here in 2006 ....... Andy
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam that was not also the full route when in 18th century they made it .
After Kurseong lines diverted into two .
One part go to NJP railway station, and one to kishanganj ( bihar, state),
Many in current don't know about it .
Thus you could reach Darjeeling via njp or kishanganj, now only njp .
That track is now out of order but some remains are still laid.
When the track was first laid Darjeeling was not the last stoppage, there was another line from it which connects a district in Darjeeling only .
But area become conjested and they the remove it too . But some remains can still be found.
In Darjeeling history i Heard there were two loco shed but now if i visit there's only 1 , i Just wonder what happened to the second one. Scrapped and removed probably.
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam another thing in the old map of the railway track there were more line and station and more loop lines and z crosses.

Does a steam engine cylinder overheat and sieze like an internal combustion engine cylinder ?
In theory, a steam loco's cylinders (or any other part)could seize if not lubricated properly. Steam locos require regular lubrication every day .... sometimes several times through the day.

This line is a major tourist attraction for the Darjeeling area and brings in valuable foreign money. However, I agree that steam locomotives are bad polluters. Most of what you can see in the smoke, though, are the particulates which fall to the ground rapidly. The real damage is done by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These are given out in just as large a quantity by road vehicles, aircraft, ships and power stations. There are only a tiny number of steam locos left working and they are beautiful and fascinating machines. They are a valuable relic from our industrial past and need to be saved from destruction. The pollution from these few steam locos is TINY compared to the pollution from the billions of road vehicles, aircraft and ships in the world. Getting rid of just a handful of steam locomotives will make no difference to the world but getting rid of the pollution from road vehicles would probably sort the problem in one move. If you’d like to save our Earth from disaster, please get rid of your car or motor bike, don’t buy anything that has been delivered by air, sea or lorry, switch off your electricity at home, never go on holiday by aircraft or car. Not easy, is it?

They could have made good use of the cog rail system here in my book.
A cog (or rack) system would have allowed steeper inclines but needs much more maintenance - and this is a very long line! ..... Andy
They didn't need it , the cog system while able to climb steep inclines is expensive to build and maintain with more complex locomotives . This is a long line and These B class tanks are still doing their job after a century , you can't do much better than that .
