deadwing in D? deadwing is one of my favourites albums of PT, its crazy how everyone has a different perspective of every album, arriving somewhere has to be a top S song totally
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here was my gateway into PT. Love that song
Deadwing is in the A Tier absolutely brilliant album
He put it in B though
Music is subjective right?
In my opinion Artiving, glass arm and something beautiful are S tier. Unfortunately i thought the other song were either medicre or straight up aweful (shallow and halo)
Deadwing is A++
Arriving somewhere but not here is sheer perfection.
The start of something beautiful is truly beautiful.
Arguing over the order of songs is folly
Deadwing is outstanding; probably my favorite.
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Mellotron Scratch, and Open Car is my favorite 3-song progression of all. I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about loll.
Deadwing is one of my favorite albums of all time.
I think I love it in part for the exact reasons Mark doesn’t. I’m a big fan of a playlist album where each song has a unique identity and you get some whiplash between styles. I also love the mid 2000s simplistic metal riffs like on Shallow & Halo. I had the title track vocal melody and chord progression in my head before hearing the album, so I’m convinced Steven stole it from my 12 year old consciousness. Arriving is my fave PT song, and Lazarus is perfect. The back half is more cohesive and beautiful. Anyway, it’s so interesting how polarizing music can be.
Right? I'm impressed they put it so low on the rank. Still i respect it considering its just personal opinion and all but still feels odd
Also Glass Arms Shattering is such a beautiful song to close the album, incredible stuff
Been waiting for Mark to have this conversation for a long time now. Good talk!
Fear of a blank planet is their best imo
I think you can make a case for that if you include the 4 tracks from Nil Recurring. But FoaBP on its own is slightly below Deadwing and In Absentia IMO.
was not expecting all the Metanoia love but I am all here for it
my favorite album of theirs is always going to be The Sky Moves Sideways but I can definitely understand both your perspectives on it
Porcupine Tree is a band that I love what I've heard but I've also been very selective of what I get into from them. I have big holes in my knowledge of them but up until recently Blank Planet was my favorite from them. On my most recent Deadwing listen though I came to the realization that that one was indeed actually their best
As a drummer, I have to say that Gavin Harrison is even better than Chris Maitland, although both are great. Gavin’s drumming is incredibly detailed, organic, and textural. Even the types of cymbals he uses are varied and unique, and I had never heard those type of sounds until I heard his playing. His drum tuning is also some of the best I’ve heard, and his command of various rudiments/ styles is superb. He also has rhythmic insights and beat displacements that are extremely innovative and add to each song’s character and feel. Also, Deadwing is an S tier for me! Fun video though, guys!
I feel like every album has at least one or two absolute bangers so it’s really hard for me to tier any of them. I’m honestly coming to really enjoy their pre-2000s catalog. Stupid dream is quickly growing on me but I know they won’t be playing much of that stuff on the new tour.
Stupid dream has so many good songs on it
I want to comment mine cause PT is my favourite band:
S: Fear of A Blank Planet
A: In Absentia, Deadwing
B: Stupid Dream, Signigy, Lightbulb Sun
C: The Sky Moves Sideways, Up The Downstair, Voyage 34
D: On The Sunday of Life, The Incident, Metanoia.
As you guys said this according to their own universe of albuns, as there is no such thing as a bad PT album.
Yay Mark is here
‘Ghost Reseries’ haha.
Great Video. Has inspired me to go through the discography chronologically. I went from the beg through Light bulb Sun in one sitting and will do the rest today. Admittedly , I became familiar with In Absentia fwd but have heard some older songs hear and there. I'm fact love the song Stars Die. Anyhow I was surprised how trippy and atmospheric the early stuff was. Was actually great to just have on while working. BTW I liked the Incident a lot. Although it has a lot if heard it before moments it it's a good entry point IMO. Thanks again.
PT is one of my favorite bands! So happy to see your doing a tier list for them. I love how everyone seems to have a different opinion on SW’s work.
Here’s my tier list (w/ SW solo albums just for fun)
S: FOABP, Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun, H.C.E., The Raven…
A: The Incident, To The Bone, In Absentia
B: UTD, Stupid Dream, TFB, GFD
C: TSMS, Signify
D: OTSOL, Insurgentes
I don’t really dislike any SW albums, that’s why there isn’t an F tier.
Nice one, again. And you do this at a very suitable moment with the return (?) of PT in the very near future. I assume you will do a tier list of Steve Wilson's solo efforts before long? My favourite PT: Fear of a blank planet.
hahaha Deadwing is probably my fav PT album :'v
Disappointed you included Voyage 34 and Metanoia but not Recordings
And Nil Recurring EP whose material is almost as strong as on its parent album
I thought about including Recordings, but as it was more of a compilation album rather than a singular project I left it off.
Recordings and Nil Recurring absolutely deserved to be on here. In no way is Recordings a compilation al bum, and Nil Recurring was only distributed separately to let the listener know that the songs are not part of Fear of a Bank Planet. It didn't nearly as well as the album, so that's why The Incident has a second disc, with songs that aren't part of the main album, but the band found worth releasing and worth listening to.
@@ericwolford5685 I agree they're not proper albums, but their contents are well worth considering, when rating the band's catalogue.
deadwing is a masterpiece. most days my favorite pt album.
Funny. I binge-listened to the whole catalog a few weeks ago. My ranking has severely changed over the last years.

Nil Recurring
Up The Downstairs

The Sky Moves Sideways

On the Sunday of Life
I agree with your Top 6, though Fear is an S-Tier album to me. I think the quality of their music utterly changed for the better after Steven befriended Mikael Akerfeldt and worked on Opeth albums IMHO. I found PT's discography before "Stupid Dream" boring.
I have yet to really dive deep into Porcupine Tree, kinda hoping the new album inspires me to get into the band.
really strong armed him into putting that album from S to A tier. It definitely belongs in S tier
Huge fan of Spectrum Pulse and Porcupine Tree so this was a really fun watch! I agree with Mark a lot, Lightbulb Sun is my favorite and In Absentia is number 2, and I also agree that Signify is underrated and Deadwing is overrated, although I wouldn't go as far to put it in D tier- probably low B or high C for me.
Personally, I put Deadwing at the top and Sky Moves Sideways in with the A's. The Incident should be higher in the A's also.
I was wondering if anyone here has anything positive and/or negative to say about the recent Steve Wilson remastering of In Absentia? I'm still on the fence about whether or not buy this. I remember getting Rush's Vapor Trails Remixed but that has been gathering dust after the first few spins.
I’ve got Metanoia on vinyl. Got the band to sign it in Atlanta in 2007 on the FOABP tour
Stupid Dreams lyrics are happy and optimistic??? The first song on the album is literally about a friend of Steven Wilson’s death and it remains pretty tonally consistent from that point on lol.
Great video guys! Really love both of your guys’ content! Here’s my tier list (I haven’t heard voyage 34 or Metanoia)
S: Fear of a Blank Planet, In Absentia, Sky Moves Sideways
A: Lightbulb Sun, Deadwing
B: The Incident, Signify
C: Stupid Dream, Up the Downstair
D: on the Sunday of Life
No discussion of Recordings? Easily one of their best
Chris Maitland having a better sense of dynamics than Gavin Harrison is a SPICY take if I've ever seen one. Great googly moogly
Hm, I think Maitland is a great drummer, but Gavin is just something that took the band into another level. The jump in drumming, between lightbulb sun and in absentia is huge.
Hate this band, but here's my list:
1. Fear of a blank planet (6/10)
2. In absentia (6/10)
3. Deadwing (5/10)
4. Closure continuation (5/10)
5. Lightbulb sun (5/10)
6. The incident (5/10)
7. Stupid dream (5/10)
8. The sky moves sideways (4/10)
9. Signify (4/10)
10. Up the downstair (4/10)
11. On the sunday of life (3/10)
Omg, Deadwing is my saviour album tho. it makes me wanna cry..
My crazy Favorites list - worst to first:
d. Love, Death & Mussolini
c. The Nostalgia Factory
b. Tarquin's Seaweed Farm
a. Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape
=
15 On the Sunday of Life
14 Lightbulb Sun
13 Stupid Dream
12 Recordings
11 Closure/Continuum
10 The Incident
9 In Absentia/Futile
8 Voyage 34
7 Metanoia
6 Deadwing
5 Fear of a Blank Planet/Nil Recurring
4 The Sky Moves Sideways
3 Moonloop (TrIV)
2 Signify/Insignificance
1 Up The Downstairs/Staircase Infinities
Weird that you didn't wait just a few weeks more to include the new one coming out.
I also feel that Fear of a blank planet and especially Deadwing are much overrated. Lightbulb Sun on the other side is criminally underrated by most.
Deadwing in D?
Deadwing is an excellent album
Good video as a retrospect of PT's work, but this could have easily been cut down to half the length with a bit less pontification.
Great band and great video! I agree about On the Sunday of Life at the bottom and I agree about Fear of a Blank Planet and In Absentia being high up but I also think The Incident and Deadwing are essentially equally as great or on that level.
I also made a Porcupine Tree worst to best video with my friend here and would love if you check it out as I'm a fan of your ranking videos: ruclips.net/video/6da3wUFlx5A/видео.html
Voyage 34 and Deadwing are A or S
I am Genre Fluid
Yea, Deadwing isn't as good to me as to many others. Really, the title track draaags so much, it's symptomatic for most songs on there. Arriving and Lazarus though
Metanoia A tier? Yikes.
dont listen to Bonnie the Cat?!?!? Chris is a better drummer than Gavin?!?!? Who are these guys?? Def not musicians
Wow. Well that's your opinion.....🤢
