I am now so heavily into Sea of Tranquility that I just watched an almost half hour review of a new album by a band I only know by name. Haven´t heard a note by them in my entire life, but this channel brings it every time.
Thanks!!
Thank you!!
I just started getting into this band recently despite being a rush-head in my 50s. Had heard of them but just never took the time to listen. Clearly should have before now. in absentia is an incredible way to get going with them… but I’m only two albums in to what sounds like a fairly large catalog…
@@tubamajuba I think In Absentia is one of their best (if not the best)
Same here the review was very interesting but I have never listened to anything by this band. I will definitely check them out now.
Especially long awaited by that dude who has been asking for the review since the comeback was announced in every vid!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol!
Appreciate the passion lads
Appreciate you watching! Thanks
Anthony and the cassettes. 😂😂😂
Ok … after three full listens (With and without headphones), my rank is...
1."Harridan" 10/10
2."Of the New Day" 7.5/10
3."Rats Return" 9/10
4."Dignity" 8/10
5."Herd Culling" 9.5/10
6."Walk the Plank" 7/10
7."Chimera's Wreck" 8.5/10
8."Population Three" 8.5/10
9."Never Have" 8/10
10."Love in the Past Tense" 9/10
CD OVERALL: 8.5/10
Of the new day deserves an 8 or a 9. Solid 9/10 for me and my fave track on the album.
@@rhizoidx Of the new day feels so gutless imo. Like a really bad attempt at an old school PT ballad
For a band who haven't played together or made any new music in 13 years, Porcupine Tree don't miss a single beat and they sound as good as they have ever done, the production for Closure/ Continuation is just fantastic.
Gavin Harrison is a machine on the drums, Richard Barbieri's keyboards add so much to the music and creates a lot of beautiful soundscapes, Steven Wilson's vocals is top notch as I would expect, his guitar playing is amazing as always and is a beast on the bass.
In all honesty, I do feel that in some areas, something is missing and I really do miss Colin Edwin a lot on this one as his laid back bass playing was a huge part of the band's sound for many years, not saying that Wilson doesn't do a great job on bass because he really does deliver big time but Edwin is the real deal. I'm also bummed out that John Wesley won't be back either as he's a brilliant singer / guitarist.
Aside from all of that, this album features some fantastic music with Of The New Day, Rats Return and Harridan as the standouts for me which are one of many.
We'll have to see what happens next but I will definitely be seeing these guys when they hit London as I've always wanted to see Porcupine Tree live and I hope they'll continue with releasing new music.
Fantastic review and loved hearing everyone's thoughts.
This album definitely is a sleeper! The pleasure of discovering new facettes of it grows with each and every listening. And yes, as Steven Reid states, the bonus tracks are so strong!
Love the Geneseo T-shirt! My mom and dad were both graduates (in early 1950s).
Nice Dave! My daughter goes there
Thx to the BIG 4 / review 👍💯
I agree with Eric’s sentiment. It doesn’t grab and stick with you immediately, but it is definitely a grower. I like it more and more each time I listen to it. You discover new details with each listen. As Anthony said, Gavin just crushes it and Barbieri has some great soundscapes on this album. I think Gavin’s rhythmic ideas/influences really elevate the album as he does with every band he is involved in (the other PT - who I saw twice in May 😉). I actually really like the extra 3 tracks that aren’t part of the album proper. Rats Return, Dignity, Chimera’s Wreck and as I said those extra three are highlights to me. And as always with PT, these songs will probably really elevate when they are played live. I am looking forward to seeing them at the Greek in LA on Sept 30th (as a result of that date, I will not be able to make the SoT event at the Chance…which I really wanted to attend. Maybe next time☹️) As far as a rating - I would give this album a 4 star…but it might move to a 4.5 with more listens.
Agree Mike, the more I listen, the more I like it.
I'm hearing Seal's 'Kiss From A Rose' in Dignity, both are in 3/4. Agree about the effect of the big wait - it's like when TOOL released Fear Inoculum. Wilson certainly knows how to get people to part with their money with all these different formats. As Steve says, fair play to him. And, as Anthony pointed out, artwork from Bowie's The Next Day. So far, unfortunately, it's not grabbing me, but I do like Dignity - Supertramp (Crime Of The Century period) does Seal.
You should have a follow up video
At the very least we will see how many end of the year “best of” lists it makes
Please Steven Wilson solo ranking
Yes please indeed
Great album, personally love Herd Culling the most. i would probably have this as #5 of their albums
Album (Favorite Song)
1. FOABP (Anesthetize)
2. In Absentia (Trains)
3. Deadwing (Arriving Somewhere But Not Here)
4. Lightbulb Sun (Title Track)
5. C/C (Herd Culling)
Great show Gents!
Thanks Christopher
Just Glad we get more PT music hopefully not the end!
@@m053168 agreed!
The 2 songs that stand out to me from this record are Dignity and Population Three. Those two tracks are amazing. Of The New Day reminds me of more classic PT. It's good, but sounds like a throwback to their earlier days. One thing that stands out through the entire album is the production and the mix. It's done so well, you can hear everything so clearly.
I like the early PT records, less into the heavier PT material. One of the best concerts I have ever been to was a Steven Wilson gig just a little bit before the Pandemic hit, and I love No Man. I will give this ago, hopefully I will like it.
I like much of their lighter material too (over the heavier stuff)
I enjoyed this, it was like another mini In The Prog Seat episode with familiar faces 😎 great review video guys.
Thanks!
I enjoyed your take on their new album. I believe it is a really good come back album. I don't know where it stands in their catalogue. Time will tell. I guess we have to spend more than a few weeks listening to it .
4.5 out of 5. It may never be in the company of some of the earlier classics for all PT fans, but it's damn good.
Walk The Plank is otherworldly and amazing. Great album, like a 9/10. The bonus tracks were wisely left off the main release in my opinion although they are also really good.
Haven't quite gotten there in the UK, but they're #1 here in Germany.
I also love the bonus tracks, particularly Never Have and Love in the past Tense. Apart from those, Chimera's Wreck and Dignity are my favs so far. The only song I could do without is actually Rats Return. PT have done this riffy math metal song several times and better before. The album is definitely growing with each listen.
I wouldn't rate as high as their triumvirate of excellence that is In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear of a Blank Planet. However, it put it way above The Incident, and like it a great deal more than their pre-In Absentia work.
I find myself wanting to go back to specific tracks on this album a lot, especially Herd Culling, Rats Return, and Chimera's Wreck. I never thought they'd reunite, so this album was a special treat for me.
So many bands are missing a guy like Richard Barbieri....I've come to appreciate his brand of atmospheric keyboards. I like it so much better than the shredding all the time keyboards. I thought the comment about the bass sounding like a guitar player playing the bass was spot on....the more I've listened to it, the more it rings true to me. This PT album....I do really like it, but I need a few more spins. It has been worth the wait, but yeah....trying to figure out the song that will "stick" with me.
Good comment. He's a top tier keyboardist. A lot of times it's just the atmosphere and little touches that really takes it to the next level. This album has just the right balance and isn't too busy.
I have heard the album many times before, when they played the entire album (Its Steven Wilson, its not a spoiler, he has been doing full album runs on tours with his solo career and PT for over a decade, maybe more), I appreciated it more then. If you get the chance to see this live, do it, its the best concert I've ever seen.
Can't wait for this review! I absolutely LOVE this album. Such a great return for PT!
I’d say in all honesty, it’s about 7.5 for me. Feels a lot like what could have been leftover from The Incident. Which is fine, that’s not a knock. I always love the ethereal- the atmospherics. But I think riff-wise, there’s a lack of those “crushing” moments that make you sit up and take note. Harridan has that moment. And maybe one or two more which makes it feel less metal/hard rock. Again, not a knock. SW has expressed feeling trapped by the metal aspect. So, I think the song crafting has been more middle of the road. Not ballad but not riff-rock. Overall, I dig it. It sounds like them. And if you have Gavin on drums, it’s basically a masterclass on every track.
Gavin is always killer
Nothing jumped out and grabbed me initially but it’s a grower. Slowly and surely it’s revealing it’s brilliance. Vibe wise it takes me back pre In Absentia before the dense metal riffs. I’m satisfied with this direction…
Excellent reviews guys. Agree on 4 rating at moment . Definitely a grower. Gets better every time. Those albums tend to become classics!!
Thanks for watching John
Sounds good but I agree with you all about not having anything just come out and grab you right from the start. Fear Of A Blank Planet hit me from the start. This one might have to grow on me. All said it does sound good though.
Felt this way about The Incident, and it never grabbed me. Most other PT releases had some immediacy to them
Love the album. Grabbed me immediately. Walk the Plank and Herd Culling are my favorites but it’s all great. Herd Culling reminds me of an M. Night Shamaylan movie. My favorite album of 2022 so far.
I'm surprised by the lack of mentioning Herd Culling. I think that is a standout track.
07:30...
I believe I did mention that track briefly
Really good to have all your views on this release. I got into PT "late" like Anthony. I have same view as Eric, nothing "sticks" strongly yet. Gavin's drumming is stellar and the grooves are amazing. Probably my favorite release of '22 thus far, but it doesn't rank super high on my PT album list. Steven's right, the best albums are usually the "growers". Hopefully that is what this album is!!
Thanks for watching, I do think this one is a grower
Its a solid 8/10 record for me.. but not the eyesight to the blind some reviews have said. Doesnt feel - for better and worse - like much new. Feels like some of the bonus tracks in, and some album cuts out...is a better version - but no version would be up with PTs best.
New songs, new sounds. Sounds like classic PT with a bit of a fresh spin to it. Not really sure what people wanted or what new things they wanted to hear. Their discography is already big and varied. Idk, I'm more than satisfied.
I'm with Anthony. 5 out of 5. Love the bonus tracks. Each
time I listen I like something new.
agree the 1st and ending songs very good, and love 'on a new day' but the rest , idk just not their best but really like the 1st 2 b sides too. definitely a good album for such a long break
👍
So in summary, the highlight for me is that Gavin Harrison brilliantly showcases his extraordinary skills and additionally his drum parts are beautifully produced. Barbieri’s soundscapes are predictably and singularly mesmerizing.
Over all, the album is exemplified by Wilson’s pristine production which easily makes it reference quality.
It appears to be a really eclectic foray into various time signatures and melodies but I would still need to listen to it a dozen more times to come up with a definitive response in making comparisons to past PT albums. For now it’s a 8/10 on the listenable scale. No doubt, if history is any guide, this will gradually creep up.
Great band Great production Great songs, i just wish they'd included the bonus tracks on the regular cd 🤟😎
I got the double LP version and agree with most everything you gents said. I really like the album, but this one is definitely a grower rather than socking it to you on first listen.
Personally it’s missing tracks that draws me in, in the same way “The Start of Something Beautiful” or “Arriving Somewhere…” does.
To me after a year with it, it is a solid and safe PT album. Better than the incident. Can not complain. 4 stars on my first listen. A year later I think it is a worthy return. His voice really sounds extra good on this recording.
The 3 bonus tracks are MANDATORY
Arnaud, I hate when they do that, I’ve been streaming it, and I agree, I like those tracks!
@@ericporter344 ;o)
I needed more than ten listens for the tractor beam to draw me in fully. Chimera’s wreck is the standout song for me. Harridan - Gavin’s drumming turns me into a giggling and slightly deranged child. Agree that Richard does an incredible job with the soundscapes.
I really like the new album. Who is going to see them on tour? I am planning to.
Bought my ticket for Dallas concert already !
Hmmm, possible topic for you and Martin...."Bands Who Survived The Hiatus" and part II, "Bands Who Did NOT Survive The Hiatus".
We did a “did they wait too long” show a while back.
Haven't listened yet, I recently plugged all the gaps in the catalogue, but haven't listened to all of them yet. Just finished listening to Lightbulb Sun, which I love, so will go through all their subsequent "heavy" albums in a run up to C / C.
Heavy PT is good PT. But I love Steven's mellow solo stuff like Raven. Insurgentes is a great heavy solo record almost indistinguishable from PT to my ears.
@@ScottyKirk1 My favourite SW solo is Grace, but I think Hand is his best, it's just that it doesn't quite do what I like best. His more recent solo albums I have but haven't listened to them yet. I loved his book and just had to try Schoolyard Ghosts by No-Man - again, acquired but not listened to yet.
I like Closure/Continuation In Absentia and Deadwing the most. Gavin Harrison def elevated Porcupine Tree.
Huge fan from signify , I agree with Eric, Steven, and Pete, the new album has some great tracks, doesn’t stand out like the back catalogue stupid dream onwards….
Live however, the Wembley London show the new album really came alive 🤘🏻👍🏻
I feel similar to the three of you but maybe a little toward Anthony’s stance too. I really like most of the songs but there are a couple that don’t do a whole lot for me. Like you all said, it’s only been out for a short time so who knows what will happen to our opinions! In any case I definitely can’t say I’m disappointed at all. Still an 8/10 album for me and I can’t see it going down, only up from there.
Thanks guys 🤘🤘
Thanks Erik
Gavin is also been recording and touring with the Pineapple Thief.
The 'voice overs' in Walk the Plank reminded me more of the most recent solo album by SW .. and there are sounds/style from 'To the Bone' in Harridan and so on. Accepting that SW recorded al that early stuff .. PC was put together to create a 'band' i.e. PC has always been a bit of SW 'project', or one of them, the most successful .. ref: SW's recent book.
Because of the long hiatus, there is a mix of old & new material, and it shows, as there are big changes in the flow of the album
i love it but i love reality bites way more!
Received the deluxe version last week ordering directly from Burning Shed. STEVEN'S correct in that the bonus tracks, especially Population Three, are very good. Otherwise, I do like the heavier tracks best but Dignity is great. Gavin is such a monster.
Going to see them in Dallas and Denver, just in case it's the last opportunity. I was disappointed that Wes will not be included as he added so much to the live shows but I'm looking forward to hearing what McStein brings to the show.
The second Eric Porter said nothing really grabs him or is memorable from this album, the chorus to "Always Never" popped into my head. He's right. I like this album, but there isn't really anything catchy or immediate or anything that sticks in your head like the songs he mentioned. Is it the lack of Colin and his influence on the Bass? Idk. Definitely a grower. I discovered this band during the Lightbulb Sun era, but my first album was Stupid Dream. Stupid Dream is my #1 favorite album by them, In Absentia is #2. It definitely sounds better in the car and home stereo. Wilson has been into the Electronica stuff all the way back to On the Sunday of Life,. The Voyage 34 ep has tons of it on it! This album is the perfect length. Great reviews and I gotta get those bonus tracks.
... and speaking of collecting. A couple of years ago I started picking up all the Delerium cd singles that I missed out on. Yea, I'm a bit of a fan myself.
Thanks for watching! I think this will be a grower for sure! We are all PT fans, so I found it interesting to hear Pete, Anthony and Steven’s takes.
I will be spending a lot of time with this one!
@@ericporter344 Yea, it seems not be an album that grabs you and everyone except Anthony(I believe he said that he loved it right off the bat) seemed to agree that it was a grower. It'll be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts 6 months from now.
@@JoeChewBaca true, how many end of the year “best of 2022” lists will it make?
@@ericporter344 Personally I've got at least 10 (...OK 20) releases this year that beat this one (for me) including: Satriani, Sherinian, Tedeschi Trucks, Vai, Belew, Birth Control, Kraemer, Lalu, Trower, Karma Effect, Kite Parade, FM, Karfagen, Wallner, D'Virgilio/Morse/Jennings, Flower Kings, Forenzics, Jonas Lindberg, Simon Phillips, Vast Conduit (just to mention a few)...
Great show guys, I love this band and I’m so glad they released another album after all this time. However would this album seen the light of day if covid didn’t happen? I don’t think so, Steven was due tour TFB.
Nice to see C / C entered Number 2 in the UK album charts only missing out Number 1 spot by….someone I’ve never heard of before?? I agree with Mr Reid the bonus tracks deserved to be included on the main album they are excellent and knowing Mr Wilson he will regret his decision and they will be played live just like “Drown with me” Glad to see you guys brought CDs of the album, don’t buy the vinyl editions, very disappointed with the pressings. Sad to see Colin isn’t involved on this album? Not even Lassis Hollie involved on the art work?
Anyway great album and I agree considering how good their catalog of albums, for me this would struggle to get into my top 5 PT albums.
My favourite track is ‘Herd Culling’ and ‘Love in the past tense’ from the extras
I’ve heard every song, but not heard the whole album at once in one sitting yet, so I don’t feel I can fairly rate it until I take it as a whole, bc that’s how I think a studio album should be experienced… UNTIL THEN.. I’ll say that it’s promising for being in my top 10 prog/art rock albums of the year, I’ll give it that so far.
I still gotta watch y’all’s “best of so far” video to see what else is up there, and to share mine (maybe that vid will shake my list up?), but for now I want to also shout out the “new” (came out in April) Primus EP, “Conspiranoid”, which leans on the proggy side, and I think folks should check out if they haven’t. I literally just found out about this a few days ago, so it’s new to me, and I’m loving it, along with this new Porcupine Tree, and my exploration of their back catalogue (which I have to credit SoT for pushing me to explore). ✌️🤘
On first listen it was a 7 out of 10. After a dozen listens it became 9 out of 10. But ATMOS version pushing it higher !
Walk The Plank is the album sleeper
That bass sound is so awesome.
It took me a few listens to "get" it. It's a fantastic album. Didn't know about the bonus tracks, I just thought it ended with Love in the Past Tense.
Listen to "Walk the Plank" on 5.1 - it's amazing
Agree on Herd Culling, guy on bottom right...love that track! The same with New Day...and the rest I'm still digesting...which usually is a very good sign, it means I'll end up loving these tracks the very most...
I agree with people that said this album is a grower... First listen, I felt kind of disapointed, felt kind of simple sound... but at each listen, I heard and understand the music, the soundscape and everything else, and it became one of the best. It's hard to pinpoint the best PT album, since they have so many different qualities.
I think the only album from SW/PT that I loved at first listen was Raven That Refused to Sing, and although it's one of the top, my favorite from SW was Hand. Cannot. Erase.... and I can't describe my feelings the first time I listened to it... I almost didn't listen again because I though terrible things about it hahaha.... But man, It's definetly the album I play the most, and I get the biggest rollercoaster of emotions from. It has everything, it's his master piece, in my opinion.
BTW, I've just came back from Chile just to watch PT (I'm from Brazil), and it was worth every penny. What a great live performance, 14-15k people, amazing energy, it just makes me respect PT/SW even more, even though I understand that their music is not for everyone. It was my 2nd PT show, and I've been to 5 SW shows. This one was the best one for sure.
Certainly a strong album, but I don't find it to be very musically exciting which I believe progressive rock should always be. This is sort of like comfort food. I wanted a big step forward with this album, but I don't think there was any step in any direction - just more of the same.
It's much more closure than continuation. They seemed to have closed the book on PT with a very good summation of the period since 2002 rather than continued to experiment and evolve.
I agree...
More of the same but do u want them to do a Calypso record lol
Great review!! I’m very new to this band. Heard the name for years but only decided to try them out about 6 months ago with in absentia, which is largely phenomenal. Then I got deadwing, which to my taste is almost as good. Question is… does it make sense to check out this new one next or should I dip into some of their other records first? I’ll have to look their catalo up… but any thoughts or recommendations appreciated!
I would say get more older stuff, TBH to me Deadwing & In Absentia are two of their best...
Get EVERYTHING, including the great new one! Then buy everything from Steven Wilson!
Eh! Bloody bonus tracks, wish I'd gone for the 2xCD version now after what Steven said. With the new Riverside album I actually contacted the place that had my pre-order and managed to change it in time to the 2xCD version. Just started listening to it.
Good call on the bass playing
5 out 5 for me. On the 1st day of release it surpassed Deadwing and Raven as my favorite work from Steven, and I LOVE those albums. It blows me away. I get the same gut rush I got when Faith No More came back with Sol Invictus and Rush's return with Clockwork Angels, both of which quickly made it into my all-time favorites. I'm a bass player and have always dug Colin's work. But I'm seriously digging what Steven's doing here. I REALLY hope there's continuation. This collaborative approach has taken their music next level imo.
It's my favorite of PT
Am I crazy that I think the bonus tracks (along with Chimera) are the best tracks on the album? I’ve only streamed it on Spotify and assumed they were a part of the album. Always mystifying to me why bands do this.
I'm yet to hear this album. At one Steve Wilson gig I can recall him saying The Beatles formed and split up in the time Tool have made another album.
To my ears it is a far better album than The Incedent. It’s also the event of the year for Prog fans. One of the major reasons I think is that PT seemed to halt long before their time. This was not a tired legacy band that stoped. It was a hungry band that disappeared.
Thanks for the review
Takes a few listens to appreciate it but overall a really good album
Dignity is the Standout track brilliant
Richard barberi is amazing
People should check out his work with Japan and his other projects
Lastly the bonus tracks are really good
Overall a solid album 8/10
I’ve been a fan of the work of Richard Barberi. Glad to hear he is still out there making music.
Yes saw Japan supporting blue oyster cult back in 78 when they were a glam rock band and followed the band all the way
@@briancox8518 Big fan of both bands, but stlylistically their worlds apart. What was peoples reaction to Japan?
Japan started as a glam rock band then obviously around 1980 art rock and electronic music then the Rain tree crow album which was again totally different more acoustic and experimental
It’s a grower for sure. The first listen it was ok, then after the 5th listen from beginning to end it’s one of my favorite albums!!! So good! To me much better then The Incident!
Rats Return did it for me!!! 💥 One of my favorite P.T. songs of all time! Besides Sleep Together!
Very insightful discussion and I absolutely agree about Richard's amazing work, and (no disrespect to Steven, but...) the "guitar player on the bass" thoughts.
Like most here I am really not into it yet. The album has grabbed not fully grabbed me yet, although Haridan and Chimeras Wreck are excellent. As a fan from 1993 and Up The Downstair I cannot ever see it being in the same league as Fear of a Blank Planet or In Absenstia or even Signify. But as Pete points out we are comparing it to an amazing catalogue of music. Very annoying to not have the 3 bonus tracks unless spending a load of money. I have the white vinyl and CD. Need to get it on my phone to immerse in it fully when out and about.
I'm with Eric on this one. Great, but no killer tracks that I would expect from PT/SW. I'm sure it will grow on me, though.
Thanks for watching!! I’m still listening, still the same for me, good album but feels like it’s just not top tier PT
Similar to the Tool comeback ... the band did an incredible job, music is great. It's just that you are having fans deal with the separation anxiety of a long layoff and a little nervous to fully trust the new stuff. Though I must say "Love in the Past Tense" is phenomenal, I had to hit repeat button on it after hearing it!
To me, Fear Inoculum is a masterpiece, and I like it as much as Lateralus. I hope C/C will do the same to me. I like it better with every listen.
Some people will always like the earlier stuff with bands no matter what
Still waiting for my physical CD, I have the vinyl and bought the deluxe digital version from the PT web store. I really like it, it is better then The Incident to my ears. Like everyone else I wish Colin was playing bass, really enjoy his style. My favorite track I think is Rats Return and the 3 bonus tracks are outstanding. Skipping the tour but not because of the music. Just not going to as many concerts to any more. Overall out of 5 stars I give it a 3.5 for now. Could change after many more listens.
Yup, heard it twice now and I agree with almost every word said - a solid 4/5 with potential to grow. Definitely superior/heavier/proggier than Steven Wilson's last two solo albums. I was getting annoyed at his implication that we weren't allowed to dislike those because it was where his head was at at that time. They weren't bad but they were disappointing after the overwhelming success that was 'Raven'. They were the albums he wanted to make but they weren't (quite) the albums I wanted to hear. C/C might be criticised for its lack of progression from previous PT albums but rather that than progression down blind alleys.
Unfortunately I ended up buying the Digital version on iTunes because of the sticker shock price on Amazon for the physical CD
Yeah i’m with steven here. Not blown yet but i want to keep listening to it, which is a good sign. Kinda like how i got into floyd. Parts sound VERY much like hand cannot erase, which is not a negative.
Hey Pete, are you going to the Porcupine Tree gig next week in New York?
Another great album by PT.I have the box set and the surround sound is absolutely great
Wait 'till Wilson remasters/remixes it...
Fair review. I agree pretty much. I do think it will get better and better with more listens. The surprise song for me that I love is the last one. Love in the Padt Tense. It is the one song that really does it fir me. Rats Return is also way up there. I do not dislike any of the songs which is a plus. Usually there is at least 1 I want to skip. This is 4 or 5 best PT album fir me now. I am more into the heavier stuff overall but the ones above it arre ( in no order) Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia, Fear of a Blank Planet, Dead wing at the very least. I am not as familiar of keen with early PY or the one right before this one.
Somewhat related...Recent new quote by Steven Wilson, taking aim at shredders: “That’s not music. That’s sport”. The prog mastermind doubled down on his criticisms of shredding, saying while it's impressive it doesn't “communicate anything to me that I would really feel” - The poster boy? Yngwie
How about a review of the live album closures and continuation live
Agree with Eric & Pete here; other than Harridan this album is OK but not memorable vs. past PT wonders. That because no Colin Edwin on bass...? Relistened to Dignity. Yep, I'm missing Colin's basswork.
For all bands, this is a 8/10. But, for PT and the high expectations which follow, I'd say 7/10.
Thanks for watching, time will tell, I do like it but waiting for that a-ha moment to hit me
A truly solid return, not in my top 5 of their all time albums but I gave it an 8.5/10.
Love the album too, but doesn't anybody have a slight problem with the general sound of it? I find it very low and slightly muffled, a bit like Opeth 's Sorceress was/is. Not a big deal though. Cheers.
Yes, I was kicking myself for not mentioning that on the show. I very much feel that the album is muffled and too condensed in places.
@@TranquilityFireReid Okay. I'm not the only one then :-) When Sorceress came out I first bought it on cd and had that muffled impression, so I got the 2Lp version, but it was the same. I guess cd/ vinyl versions of PT/CC are the same as well... Cheers!
@@purpletemple1 I only have the CD of Closure/Continuation, but haven't heard many good things about the vinyl pressings...
decent album overall 7/10
Got the deluxe edition with the extra tracks. Id say a 4.5 for me. I agree with the comparison based on the strength of their other albums. That being said, the last great effort produced by Steven Wilson was Hand Cannot Erase back in 2015. After his last two solo efforts, this album is a godsend. Top of the catalogue? OK probably not. But a spectacular effort nonetheless.
I really dig it, but as you discussed - it's not their best effort. Might be a top 5 or top 6 for me. I thought the almost 8 month long promo campaign was a bit too long - 4 months would have sufficed. It will probably make my top 5 at the end of the year, and I'll see them in concert which I'm very excited for.
Chimera's wreck has some Spock's Beard feel to it. I'm sure I'll get flamed for that one...
I find myself agreeing with all of you. Technically, this is excellent but I’m still not loving it despite have listened to it over 10 times. My favourite so far is Dignity. Others, not so much. I do like the bonus tracks especially the instrumental Population 3.
I agree with Steven, stuff I like straight away I tire of. Chimera's Wreck, Walk the Plank (as a tune that stays with me) are, so far, my favourites. I prefer Steven Wilson's solo stuff --- yeah I know, sorry ... But .. I do .. I am really liking this album, though ... :-)
I pretty much agree with all of that at this early stage Nigel. Thanks for watching!
