This is my absolute favorite Yes member solo album. Chris’s playing is off the charts! It’s a shame that he wasn’t as prolific solo-wise like his bandmates, but everything about this album is stellar. I love the 2007 2-disc reissue with the bonus DVD that has the videos, a visual commentary like he’s hanging out in the room with you, and a cool interview with Jon Kirkman. I love this album!
Wow - just listened to "Safe" again (for the 100th time), and I positively love every second of it! I'm 64 for reference (and a percussionist), and I will never tire of this album with every song as good as the others, each in its own way.
Chris Squire was probably the greatest compositional bass player around. His bass lines are amazingly well constructed. They are musical and unique. They are totally viable as stand alone pieces of music. Add his unique sound and he's unbeatable in that capacity. Maybe not the greatest soloist around, but I'd take his compositional strengths over great soloing any day.
I adore this album. Back when I had a car with a cassette player, the only tape I always kept in the car had this on one side and Olias on the other. I listened to it endlessly, and to this day I still love them both.
Anthony F/ great job hosting this album. I line up more towards you and Pete on this album. I would give this a solid 4.25. / 5. Easy ! Thanks for picking it, it was good to play it all week to revisit. Thanks to all on the episode for your time 👍💯
Pretty tough crowd on SOT tonight lol. I think FOOW is a superb 70s progressive album. It’s composed nicely and is really melodic and accessible and pastoral, not unlike Moody Blues were. I understand it’s not heavy and complex enough for Ken and George and Luis but I think the guys were a bit harsh. It definitely is better than anything Yes did after Drama in my opinion but I digress. Good pick. ANT-KNEE!
Great show guys 😂Luis in great form as usual I actually own this on vinyl when I was in my teens I thought it was OK and I went to listen to it for the show and I would say it has moments but not really a great album. It’s a good album.
When Keith Emerson was looking for a bassist/vocalist to form ELP, he approached Squire and tried to pilfer him from Yes. Squire turned Emerson down, explaining that he didn't consider himself a strong lead vocalist. Like any good musician, Squire knew his limitations and strengths.
Agree that the album is lifted by Bill Bruford but I also love the bass and keyboards on most of the record. I got to see and meet Bill Bruford 2 weeks ago in England as part of the Pete Roth Trio for my 40th birthday. Beyond a dream come true
Oh yeah, the guy even most prog fans haven't heard of is definitely the Keith Emerson of bass. What famous prog band was Pekka in? I must've missed that one. In truth, there isn't a Keith Emerson of bass, but if there is it's definitely Squire.
I enjoy the album overall, its in my regular rotation and I play this at least once every few months. I do agree with the criticism on the length of some of the material. Altho I enjoy Safe, I would have preferred it trimmed down to make room for another track.
Lucky Seven & Silently Falling - Exceptional. My go to tracks when on the arse end of a drinking session. The opening tracks - I get the Ear Worn tag. They're ok. The last track I leave. Doesn't sound coherent to me.
Gee, I wonder whose turn it was to pick an album! All jokes aside, this is a brilliant record. It does make me wonder, though, which Yes solo effort does Anthony prefer, this or Olias?
Glad to see Chuck back! About the record, it's pretty good, but feels like it's lacking something. All the elements are there, it's just not that memorable to me. I would give it a 7,5/10
Bruford is good on Hold out.. and Lucky Seven. For the rest of the tracks White would be a much better fit, because he can really handle the slow, epic songs - and he's a better rock drummer too.
Lots of pleasant and interesting passages scattered all around the album but a couple of snooze parts indeed, specially on 'Safe'. Good solo effort from the late Mr. Squire.
If he is considered to be one of the best bass players of all time, you would expect some bass playing pyrotechnics, even above and beyond what he did with yes. If Billy Sheehan was doing a solo album, I certainly would not want him to write folk songs and try to sound like Simon & Garfunkel.
Hey guys .I quit !!!@24:30 due 2 the fact I'm upset .And it does no good 2 watch any further . I guess I have bad taste in music . Or I don't know what I'm listening 2 .I don't know which. I love this lp .I think it's damn good . I still love the channel .But goodbye for now. Merry Christmas.
Remember nobody is an expert in the music that you love - except for you! If you like this album, I for one, think you've got pretty good taste in music 🙂
Yeah got to admit. This was a struggle to get through. To me Squires album is Amazing. I bought it when it came out. I love Squires voice. Amazing album. I miss Squire. Also he was a brilliant singer. I'm with on this one. It just seemed a pull down on Squire. RIP CHRIS YOU WAS AMAZING.
2024 in a nutshell. If someone doesn't completely align with your viewpoint, you can't even deal with it. Namby pamby pantywaists. How do you guys get thru the day without everyone falling into complete agreement with all your opinions ffs?
@@PatLBestEver I'm not a panty waist. I'm a eclectic AF soon 2 be (12/24) 61 y/o music fan. Unlike some ppl who have listened 2 this recording 4 a long time .I've only listened 2 it for 3/4 years. Hell I wish anyone but JA was the singer for YES .Sorry but that's how I feel.

I guess I'm outnumbered but I love "Safe" and the way they spin out so many variations on that small theme.

Steve's Beginnings and Moraz's "i", loved 'em all. Ramshackled gets a lot of hate, but just a totally different type of record - still good.
Superb record.

How dare you not bow at the altar to it?! Anything less than a full slurp is blasphemy!

It's a good album but it's no Crime of the Century!
Of all of the Yes solo albums from that range of years, this one is my favorite!
It's been a while but I'll hafta give this another spin.
I've never had a problem with this album. Always loved it.
It's been a while though.

If anyone is the Keith Emerson of bass, it's Pekka Pohjola.
Pekka was a phenomenal bassist, yet Chris Squire WAS that bassist that influenced so many bassists in the Prog genre.

Story of (i) Patrick Moraz is my favorite of the YES member solo albums followed by Olias of Sunhillow by Jon Anderson.
Anthony of Sunhillow great choice. Though I'd like to see Olias just to make Dr. Nasser have to listen to it and comment. Comedy gold right there.
My friend Steve Hooker made a copy of this album and that I have cherished
Truth be told the best solo album Chris did was his Christmas album Swiss Choir.
Love how subtitles say Prague for Prog 😂
Same here 🤪🤪
Americans seem to say prog and Prague the same lol
There was a lot of going close to the full George Lamie here. Never go full George Lamie. Unless you're George Lamie.
Lucky Seven & Silently Falling - Exceptional. My go to tracks when on the arse end of a drinking session. The opening tracks - I get the Ear Worn tag. They're ok. The last track I leave. Doesn't sound coherent to me.

Luis, as a bass player, what do you think of Kengo Sakamoto from Koenji Hyakkei?
One of the greatest prog albums of ALL time. A masterpiece.
I love this album...Especially Safe, more especially the final section...🙄

No need to trash Alan White.
Indeed. Quite a bit of trashing in this show. It was a struggle to get to the end.

Boz Burrell of Bad Company is another outstanding bass guitar player. One of the first bass players to use a fretless bass.
Good singer too.
Boz Burrell (sorry 😔)
Not much of an album.olias of sunhillow is much better
The best solo album of all time. To me Chris Squire was the best Bass player of all time. RIP Chris.
