I started reloading because of steel shot. Shells at the time suffered from poor performance, low kill rate and expense. No matter what Field and Stream or (insert outdoor magazine here)said it was typical for all shells and manufacturers. I spent hours in Libraries, magazines, and manuals (this was years before the internet) not to mention how many "oldtimers" I talked to, trying to find an answer for my questions. Finally, after literally hundreds of hours I spent all my overtime money and purchased a Ponsness/Warren 375, spare head, and setups for 10ga, 12ga 2 3/4 & 3", Wads for steel in the same ga's, 209 primers and a few cans of IMR 4756. The kill ratio was as good as PB (lead) at 50 yards or less and in-fact was accused of using such. The learning curve was less then I thought having everything figured out by about the 6 week mark. Barrel damage was a huge concern for me but I never noticed anything in any of my guns with some still being used today.
A few years later, the 3 1/2 was introduced that kind of solved some of the problems with steel shot. I couldn't find a good 4756 recipe for the 3 1/2 so on the advice from others I tried "Steel" powder from Alliant. It worked but not as well as my IMR. I certainly wouldn't push my shot over the 45 yard range and even the I was getting cripples.
By this time factory shells had become ok, not as good as reloaded but they were cost effective.
Now, 15 years later, shells are hard to find and once again expensive. I can't even find 10ga where I live. Being out of reloading for that many years I thought I would give it a try again. Seems all my favorite powders are gone, (like when Alcan was no longer imported) and all I can find are powders I never liked (Steel, Hodgdon...) I am sure someone will love them but for me they never performed like 4756. So now, I guess I have to use what ever over the counter shell I can find or play around with powders until I find something that works. Either way I feel I loose.

When SR4756 was discontinued I was heartbroken. I didn't use Steel powder until after I ran out of the SR. What I dislike about Steel powder is it has to be hand-weighed. Hodgdon Longshot or Alliant Blue Dot are the best these days as far as metering in a loader for loading steel. The one thing about Longshot is the report is very loud. Sometimes you can find SR4756 at a show or a gun shop, but those are pretty rare. Thanks for watching hope you enjoyed the video.

Fast forward to 2022. There is no Unique, no Universal, no 20/28, no Green Dot, Blue Dot or Red Dot, No PB, no Herco, no International and no IMR. Good luck finding load data for 16 gauge using any of the few components that are actually available for purchase. A few people are trying to experiment with some of the pistol powders which have similar burn rates to the formerly popular shotgun powders. Most of the powders that are findable are either too hot or too slow for the 16ga. I haven't found anything that sits in the sweet spot that Unique and Universal occupied.

I saw blue dot, red dot, e3, and Longshot this last weekend at Sportsmans Warehouse. Winter 2023. They also had primers and wads. I feel like the shortage is turning around.

black powder dram equivalent listing is based on observing that
3 drams or 82 grains of black powder could drive 492 grain
or 1.125 ounce load of shot out of a 12 gauge at 1200 fps
    so
the amount of any modern propellant that can push one & an 8th of an ounce @
1200 fps velocity is then said to be the equivalent of 3 drams of black powder
    &
shell reload data from factories say most of their 3 dram equivalent
shells start from 16.5 - 19.5 grains of Smokeless to work up from
    as in
.60 - .73 drams of smokeless powder is equivalent to 3 drams black powder
    or
a 4 or 5 to one ratio BY WEIGHT! NOT VOLUME! as a starting point ONLY!

I'm watching back through videos I've watched already, just absorbing info, but nice to see another Okie in the hobby.
Have mainly found content from BRO & Shotgun Scientist. The shotshell reloading for beginners Facebook group in kinda helpful too.
Haven't found any components locally yet, but still hopeful to find some powder & primers in the 918 before taking the plunge. Bass Pro in BA seems to be the only retailer around.
    Have a good one Sir

Dram equivalent was first started to compare black powder loads to modern smokeless powders when companies first started loading shotshells with "modern smokeless powder" so shooters used to the old nomenclature could mentally know , your example of your dad is a good example. It is still used to some extent but US manufacturers are rapidly moving to average velocities instead of dram equivalent.

    • @okshotgun

I hear ya. It's sort of similar to calling a Chevrolet 350 v8 a 5.7liter. That still sounds weird to me but that is how I grew up hearing them spoken of. There were 305, 350, 400, and 454 that we had in our various farm trucks. They are different ways of saying the same thing. I hear people today talking about the 5.3 as the “new” 327 even though they are two different designs. Thank you for watching. Hope you enjoy the content.

For 16 gauge 20 gr to 23gr of longshot will generally work for just about any 3/4 to 1.125 oz pay load For 20 gauge 20 gr of longshot will generally work well for just about any payload of 3/4 to 1.125 oz . For 12ga 30gr of longshot of longshot generally works well for any 3/4 to 1.375 oz payloads with hot primers. Faster velocitys with lower chamber pressures using longshot. Try at your very own risk.

Now that Hodgdon Clays is no longer available, Hodgdon Perfect Pattern is a really good powder to use for target loads, that is 7/8 ounce and 1 ounce loads, and Hodgdon Titegroup or High Gun (same powder) is great for 1-1/8 ounce target loads.
P.S. I'm glad you didn't repeat the old nonsense about slow powders having lower recoil than fast powders. That's nonsense.

I am trying to figure out velocity. All the charts I see show fps of around 1200 but most of the shells I buy are around 1550 fps. How do I get that out of the reload, does it take different powder or just more of it and if it is more how do I do so safely?

No good to buy wads hulls and primers only to find the powder being asked for isn't available. Wads being so cheap and normally available do those last.
