  • This video is about how to avoid your pond plants from taking over your pond and becoming completely unmanageable.
    Pond plants are like weeds, they are very invasive and left to their own devices they will quite happily consume your entire pond leaving little space for water and the aquatic residents.
    It is extremely important to remove your plant each December, cut but root and overgrown and lop off the tops. Then replace your plants back into the pond so they will ready up for the spring.

    I've never seen this kind of advice before on the Internet (not that it doesn't exist). Thank you for answering some questions I didn't know how to ask. Nice one.

    Quite a Brisk walk, your water dog. Loved this! Thank you for including us. While we are warm & dry at home. Once I sailed on a blazing sunny day… Matagorda Bay in Texas. No wind, no clouds. Just colorful sails floating. The water and sky blended. I could see the feeling old sailors sailing off the edgeof the ocean. Ahhh back to plants. I am making a mini bog in 6 gallon low pot. Plant blue water iris, parrots feather for winter. Will put pump down to deep area. These are super. Elephant ears in summer. Cheers !

    Would you be tempted to split the plant and repot , in fresh suitable soil . I just think when a plant has got to such a size, within a session you might be back to square one . I must say I very much Like your program , and find it a refreshing change from some of the more intense aspects of the hobby that are shown on RUclips . I’ve not had a pond since moving to our present house some twenty years ago , yet I still enjoy watching the making of ponds and of course maintaining them . Unfortunately now the prospect of attempting a pond build is just physically not possible , which brings me to wonder have you ever thought of designing a pond that looks natural ( as oppose to a box or oblong) that doesn’t need a hole to be dug . But is totally self supporting , I say this because the preformed plastic/ fibreglass ponds are totally dependent on being dug into the ground , and supported by an equally perfectly shaped hole . No easy task , in my past experience . I know there are units that are designed to be say placed on a patio but they look pretty naff and soon look decidedly shabby . Well I best stop rambling on . So best wishes and kind regards as always 😀👍👍👍

      Hi when the plants have matured there's almost no soil left in the pot (as long as the pot was a decent size to start with), they dont need repotting. The good thing about when they get to this size when you cut them back, they are pretty much fish proofed. Sounds like a good idea, maybe that's a good little sideline for you? wink!

    Thank you for the advice. Because of illness I am only just getting round to sorting out my small (1000 litres) above ground pond. Can I still cut back the plants ?

    • @thep0ndman
      @thep0ndman  Год назад +1

      Yes they will need a trim. All plants need a trim at some point, especially the dying leaves etc so it can put more energy in the new growth!

    Great video, thanks. But, don't I need to leave some cover for frogs and so on, to spawn in Jan-March? If I cut all the plants back to 4 inches above the pot (or something) then it will look a bit bare and there will be nowhere for frogs, tadpoles etc to hide (and not much for them to eat?) ?

      They should be fine, they may leave the pond anyway as they are amphibians so do not live in water all the time
