This is the kind of stuff that people don’t know about FCP and the magnetic timeline which make it such an awesome editor. Quality training by experienced trainers (wonder who I might be referring to?) is priceless. When FCPX/Motion came out (and even with legacy FCP) I used Ripple Training. I came up to speed very quickly because of lessons like this one and never looked back. Steve and Mark are some of the best trainers in the business.
This dropped exactly at a time when I needed this. I knew about these cuts, but the way you demonstrated these is fantastic. I'm going through a video that I'm editing just now, and this has transformed the edits!
I truly wish there were keyboard shortcuts that create default J or L edits, including audio fades. I use these edits all the time, and it’s frustrating to jump through so many hoops. Appreciate your shortcuts at the end… maybe that will speed things up a bit for me. Thanks!
I think what Final Cut and Motion at large are missing is proper scripting or expressions based language, the community would go bonkers with so many utility scripts, macros and whatnot. For example, Motion behaviors are amazing, easy to use, but I still miss the fact that I can’t add a expression on my own on a specific layer property like in After Effects.
I followed your steps exactly, but when I press the 'period' key, then the loop playback stops looping. Weird! Do you please know how I can fix this? Thank You!
@@firstmile Did you check to make sure that there's a check mark next to loop playback in the view > playback menu? This is the only reason it will not work as I showed.
@@rippleguys I think so. Let me check it. It’s crazy. I called Apple & spoke with a senior FCP advisor. I sent him your video. He watched it. And tried on his computer while I was on the phone with him. He had the exact same Problem that I had. It didn’t work for him either.
I can't believe its that easy. I hear my professor's voice in my head saying to use this type of cutting yet for 6 years I've continued to do it manually 🤦♂️

Thank you so much for this useful information
Thanks Steve, you guys always pack so much into such a small video.
Gold, as always, you two (I sense Steve off-screen!). I love the keyboard shortcuts too.
Thanks. In particular, the "Fancy Keyboard Shortcuts" are brilliant!
Thanks!
thanks Martin!
I have used detached audio but this looks easier.
Golden keyboard shortcuts! Thank you.
Real time saver with those short cuts. Thanks.
I'd totally forgotten about this, thanks for the reminder
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge, saving time for me and many others in the process. Much appreciated.
absolutely love the Better series with hotkeys!
Awesome! Thanks!!

Great work just what I needed.
As always Steve, thanks for this little gem ;-)
Great tutorial ~ thanks!
Incredible tutorial, epic and transcendent, thank you!!
Wow 🤩!
I could use this to save me so much time in editing. Thank you very much.
This is like a game changer to me, thanks for the tutorial guys🤟🤟
Thanks a lot! This will help me.
Thank you so much can you show how you do the role colours for video and audio I thought it was on possible if the audio was detached.
Thank you
very good, Tanks
Very good content!
So helpful! Thank you my good sir
Thank you guys, you are amazing!
Wow! This was gggggrrrreeeaaattt (as Tony the Tiger used to say...)! Thanks!
That is one of the reasons why I love editing with magnetic timeline! No other NLE has implementent J and L-cuts this way.
Thank you so much!
That’s a great video
Thanks!!!
Does Resolve have this shortcut too?
I think I need to do a video on this
yes
I followed your steps exactly, but when I press the 'period' key, then the loop playback stops looping. Weird! Do you please know how I can fix this? Thank You!
Looping is not enabled. That is why the edit stops.
@@rippleguys but I followed your steps exactly. I had enabled looping.

@@rippleguys Yes, there is a check mark next to loop playback. So, I don't know what's wrong.
could this be the 10.6.2 version?
Is it out already? We’re experiencing terrible lags on 10.6.1 even on a new MacBook Pro!
@@gohgomakan I saw a glimpse of 106.2 at the apple event last night
