    Today's in depth Final Cut Pro audio tutorial is focused on showing you how to create better sounding audio for you or your talent's voice. Whether it be creating better sounding audio for commercial/personal voiceovers, interviews, or RUclips videos, the steps we'll take in today's tutorial should set you on the right path towards creating great sounding voice audio.
    Today's process will include using a few Channel EQs, the built-in Compressor in Final Cut, a Limiter, and CrumplePop Echo Remover (not always necessary). There are definitely different ways to have your subjects voice sound great, however this method I've found to be the most effective for me.
    🎧 I'D HIGHLY SUGGEST WEARING HEADPHONES FOR THIS VIDEO BY THE WAY 🎧
    It's fairly hard to tell the difference on cell phones and stock computer speakers

    I'm binge watching your tutorials now. I've been using Final Cut since Final Cut Express and I'm still learning things from your videos. You're concise and clear, and you don't just say "Do this and it'll sound good," rather you explain what it's doing and why it helps. I've watched tutorials on paid sites like Lynda and your quality beats their comprehensive courses. Excellent, excellent job. Please never stop!

    I have watched several voice audio editing in FCP videos today and yours was the best! I was amazed at other videos that only provided numeric values verbally (no titles) and were produced using audio of the speaker that had some bad frequencies and room reverberation. Your advice is great, on-point, well-conveyed and your audio mix sounds terrific.

    Quick additional tip: in addition to pressing forward slash to start a clip from the beginning, if you do this first View > Playback > Loop Playback (or press Command-L) then when you press forward slash it'll actually loop the clip indefinintely or audio selection indefinitely so that you can just concentrate on the audio editing.

      Thanks so much guys! That means a lot coming from you. I suppose that would probably be most efficient. I just got the sense after reading the Apple website about the limiter, that its features are a little more fine tuned, for lack of a better term, than the compressor's limiter (however I could be wrong). I did a little research on the appropriate way to set the FCP's limiter, and now it's just become a part of my workflow (especially because I've saved presets for different scenarios, so I seldom pull it up anyways).

    Great video, nicely done! With the adaptive limiter, are you usually looking to keep audio around -6 db in most cases? Curious how sounds are when played back across mobile phones, given we want the volume to be at decent levels with all the ambient noise that is likely around. I've heard some people say they may even aim for closer to 0 db when rendering the final video, whereas when recording -12 db is a good place to be. Thanks!

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Jonathan! So I've actually changed that to -3 for me. I've found that that's a perfect volume across different devices. It's not too loud that people get annoyed and have to turn down their volume and it's not too quiet that you can't hear the minor details.
      As for recording, you're right. It's best to have the majority of your audio fluttering around -12 and -10 and then peaking at -6.

    Quick question about audio output mix. It seems when I get my mix to the point I like, after it goes to Vimeo or RUclips and is played back through a smaller speaker, (Iphone) the mix is nothing like I set. Is there a good workflow, other than going through the entire download process to set my audio mix across different platforms?

      I know the problem. I'm not positive, but I'm not sure there's a good workflow to combat this.

    • @dylanjohndickerson

      You're welcome! Hmm I don't, but if it's echo, then I'd recommend picking up the plug in 'CrumplePop Echo Remover'. If not, you can try using 'noise removal' built into FCP. There's probably a plug in that could help, but unfortunately I don't know of one.

    • @dylanjohndickerson

      Hey! Just follow the same steps as in the video. Male or female voice doesn’t matter with the compressor as it’s just adjusting decibel level.

    Hey man, I know this video is old but it was SUPER helpful! I just had one question. What should I do if after zeroing out my computer and setting the threshold and ratio, the compressor still isn't hitting in that 3-8db range? I find myself having to crank the threshold above 30 to get it there.

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  Год назад

      Hey man! That is correct. Once you zero it out and you find where it's sitting, bump the threshold till you get it within that range. Usually mine's around that area as well.

    Hey Dylan, I used this approach to create an audio effect and it perfectly worked for a few weeks but as soon as I updated my Final Cut Pro today, it wrecked the entire effect. Did you experience the same problem? What do you recommend to fix it?

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  Год назад

      Yep yep! I experienced the same issue, Sam. I think it's because they updated some of the interfaces of those effects so they're just not linking. Unfortunately, I'd recommend just making the presets again from scratch. I know that sucks, but that's a better option than waiting for them to release an update to fix this bug.

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 года назад

      @@oliverw.1187 That's a tough one. If you're doing a lot of client work, hands down Artlist. Once you download that song you can use it whenever you'd like and as far as I know, you're free to use it for client work. With MusicBed, you can only use the song when you have a subscription. So if you download a song and months go by after your subscription is done and you try and use it, you'll get a copyright on your video. You can't use MusicBed for client work as well (I think you'd have to pay quite a bit of money to get a subscription to use songs for client work). Both have great music though.
