SpaceX inspired edf rocket part 2: Final assembly, tuning and maiden flight

  • This is the second part of my Spacex inspired edf rocket project where I assemble the final pieces of the rocket, tune the correct PID values and perform a maiden flight.
    In order to find the correct PID values i had to build a rig that suspends the rocket in it's center of gravity and which allows for 2 degrees of freedom. I first tried to tune the PID values with the rocket suspended on a wire but this ended up working not so great like you can see in the video.
    Once i got the right PID values dialed in, I first did like 10 hover tests inside (now i did try this out with the wire attached) before going outside to attempt a maiden flight. I build and painted the landing platform a day before the maiden flight and the paint was still a bit sticky. As a result of this the rocket stuck to the landing platform and tipped over. For the next attempt i put some baby powder on the platform to prevent it from sticking (which gave me some nice clouds when taking off ;-)
    It turns out landing an orbital rocket booster (RC replica) isn't that easy.Cudos to you mr. Elon Musk ;-) I wanted to do some more test flights to try to stick the landing but unfortunatley the wind started picking up. However I'm still very happy with the results i managed to get out of it (in contradiction to what some people tought ;-)
    Once the weather clears out again i will definitely try the landing bit again, I'm even thinking of adding a gps to the pixhawk flight computer and attempt an autonomous landing. We'll see.
    For those of you who say an edf is not a rocket, you're right it's technically a single copter design in the shape of a (SpaceX) rocket. An edf really is the easiest and cheapest way to control the thrust to maintain a stable hover.
    I wished i had the technology, knowledge and money to attempt to build a liquid fueled one.
    I'm referring to "Spacex inspired" because i did use some general proportions from the falcon 9 rocket but had to make a lot of adjustments to turn it into a fully capable working rocket that's capable of hovering.

    Great job! FYI I found that iNav was much easier to tune than Arducopter for this sort of thing. I was never able to get my single copter flying well with Ardupilot but iNav was very stable with just a few minutes of tuning.

    I remember when you first started this lol. It’s really cool. I’d recommend putting motors on the side near the top for added stability. Not sure how big of a job that would be coding wise, but it would definitely help for keeping it stable and help during landing.

    Great project!! Looks great!
    Add weigh to the lower position or move down the EDF or battery.
    I fly RC airplane and when the plane is in hover and nose heavy start to oscillate the same way that your booster, so my advice is to add more wight in the lower position or remove weight from the upper position.
    Good luck!!

    1. Put a rocket engine at bottom. 2. Put landing legs at top of first stage. 3. After burn launch, eject capsule (parachute?) and use small gyro to flip first stage of rocket 180 degrees. 4. Now with landing legs down, use the landing motor to put her down. Piece of cake!

    Vooreerst PROFICIAT voor deze prestatie.
    Ik had eerlijk een beetje mijn twijfels of hij zou vliegen, hopelijk is ze nog in zijn geheel om volgende maand eens een indoor demo te geven. ( ? 18/10 )
    Landen is nog altijd het moeilijkste maneuver

    • @BrianBrocken
      @BrianBrocken  4 года назад

      Haha merci Walter. Om eerlijk te zijn begon ik ook te twijfelen of hij wel zou vliegen 😅 Ik had in het begin veel problemen om de juiste PID parameters te vinden maar heb deze na het bouwen van een gestel (dat hem vasthoud in zijn CG en 2 vrijheidsgraden van beweging heeft) uiteindelijk gevonden. Ik ga hem zeker meenemen naar indoor, dit zou geen probleem moeten zijn. De meeste onderdelen zijn snap-fit bevestigd en komen gewoon los bij ne crash. De neus is bevestigd met witte ductape en schuift er gewoon uit wanneer hij crasht. Landen is inderdaad het moeilijkste haha. het minste dat hij nog wat snelheid heeft in een bepaalde richting bij het landen valt hij omver. Daar moeten we nog iets op vinden 😉👍

    Very cool... A couple of possible solutions.....use the pid controller on the gear legs. Appears the problem gets much worse when the first leg gives and the others touch down. Time it so if say at 5deg rocket tilt the gear plane is -5deg the other way. At a minimum link the legs so they react/move together from impacts. Other possible solution would be lateral thrust ports just below the fan directing flow for lateral stability... Aka cold gas thrusters. Once ground contact happens vector control is zero.... took SpaceX a few tries as well!!!

  • @geektoolkit
    @geektoolkit 4 года назад +1

    This is amazing work and progress! I'm wondering, watching the videos, if you're trying to do too much manually. for instance, would a downward facing camera that's looking for the 'marker' of the landing pad be something that could assist with the landing. the computer could make faster adjustments I'd think. Also do you need thrust on the head of it? The first landing came in at an angle, there was a bit of a bounce and then it looked like the head momentum just kept going (makes sense, the base was 'stuck' as it was on the pad). If there was thrust at the head, I'd think a small amount would go a long way. That may make the design too complicated, but just my thoughts. Really well shot video, thankyou! Subscribed and looking forward to the next one!
