The drummer, Steve Shelley is definitely the unsung hero of the band, one of the best drummers of the 80s, as indie/college art rock became alt rock. If you wanna hear what he can do listen to their song Schizophrenia
Reading Thurston’s book now, the original drummer really helped shape their sound early on, but Steve is really cool. His record label introduced me to some acts like Blonde Redhead really early on.
Sonic Youth is often your favrotie band's favorite band. They were definitely on the alt-ier side of alt-rock. They played a lot with distortion and influenced a ton of bands, including Nirvana. Their heyday was the late-'80s to the mid-'90s. This track is from a bit later in their lifecycle. If you want to get a better feel for them, check out the songs 'Teenage Riot', '100%', 'Sugar Kane', 'The Diamond Sea', 'Dirty Boots', and 'Kool Thing'.
'94, had to look it up myself, cool band to react to, way off the mainstream radar, they were founded in '81 and influential to alt and grunge, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, yada, all took a chapter or two from Sonic Youth ; bassist/vocalist Kim Gordan said the song is about using passiveness as a form of rebellion
Influential amongst other bands, but never mainstream. They introduced Nirvana to their label, Geffen Records. You should check out Echo & the Bunnymen (no dark things - live), Interpol (obstacle 1), Gang of Four (what we all want) for more accessible alt rock/post-punk.
Lol, the queen of Riot Grrrl Kathleen Hanna (married to Ad Rock), and Sonic Youth…popular still. I’m always shocked by how few people know what they’re watching. Hope you enjoyed at least 🤷♀️ You might as well go looking into Kathleen’s band Bikini Kill. Saw them on the reunion tour in Portland. REALLY good. Tobi still looks amazing (Kurt Cobain’s ex). Courtney was always gunning for Tobi and Kathleen, because they were very good friends with Kurt. I actually think she was insanely jealous of the friendship Kathleen and Tobi had with Kurt (Kathleen also dated Dave Grohl, if I’m not mistaken). One night, Kathleen and Kurt got hammered, spray painted a fake abortion clinic, and Kathleen wrote “Kurt Cobain Smells like Teen Spirit” on his apartment wall….before passing out. She’s led an interesting life. I’d recommend their songs Sugar, Rebel Girl, and White Boy. Also, Bull in the Heather, was a horse a friend of theirs was betting on.
When I was in high school in 2004 I played this song for some kids in study hall. They said the exact same thing. “The guitars sound really cool, but the vocals are terrible”. 😂😂😂😂
They were definitely around in 87-90! This one in particular is 1994 i think. They had an awesome, varied career and i love their spirit of experimentation
Sonic Youth is awesome. I like this song Bull in the Heather the best. Great music video. I like the horses and the young couple in love in the video. They remind me so much of me and my childhood friend Shannon. The only difference is the blonde beauty In the music video has brown eyes and my childhood friend Shannon has blue eyes. Bull In The Heather is my favorite song. Another good song for you gentlemen to check out is 100% by Sonic Youth.
Sonic Youth are bona fide underground legends and icons and their amazing, varied career spanned more than 3 decades from their 80's heyday(innovators in the experimental, no wave, noise rock, NYC underground punk scene to their innovative melding of experimental, avant garde punk aesthetics with boundary smashing guitar sounds and soundscapes that defied categorisation and was unique and beautiful and scary and edgy until their untimely breakup around 2009). They released many classic and timeless masterpieces in their amazing career with a bunch of genre defying albums throughout the 80's,90's and 2000's. They influenced and inspired so many fantastic artists and bands with their integrity and talent and passion. They went where no one has gone before or since. Listen to Schizophrenia from their 1987 album Sister. They are untouchable.j
The song is a direct slap at LL Cool J. Kim had to interview him, and he treated her, and the women he was with, like they were there for his pleasure. It pissed Kim off, hence the song, and Chuck D making a cameo (I believe Chuck wasn’t a huge fan of LL).
I’m disappointed the first thing they said during the video wasn’t “how come she’s counting?! Counting sucks! Uhhh, maybe she’s like counting how many times she’s done it.”

And then he went on to be in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Also, I believe Evol was Steve Shelly's first album with the group... not one track on that album uses a high hat
"Bull in the Heather" was the name of a race-horse in the early 1990s. Maybe Kim is counting her winnings: "10...20...30...40..."?

The band came out in 1981. This song came out in 1994. The girl in the pigtails is from the band Bikini Kill . She is not in sonic youth
Kathleen Hanna, married to Ad Rock from Beastie Boys
I loved this song and it was 90s. Thanks for reminding me about it. Luscious Jackson, The Breeders, etc were some other similar bands.
And don't forget P.J. Harvey! Talked to her 2 times and besides a genius she's also a real sweet person!
When I was in high school in 2004 I played this song for some kids in study hall. They said the exact same thing. “The guitars sound really cool, but the vocals are terrible”. 😂😂😂😂
I love this song
Sonic Youth: I adore the music, but absolutely detest the interviews.
The drummer was in the greatest punk band ever ... they were called the crucifucks ...
I think you should check out at their 19 albums guys!

This is a vaguely memorable song friman otherwise forgettable album.
And i say this as a huge sonic youth fan.
The song you might really like is Kool Thing

@@lesyeuxsansvisage1157 "Fear of a female planet". That was pretty cool of him.
Washing Machine!
You were given the wrong track by sonic youth to react to. Shame
I’m disappointed the first thing they said during the video wasn’t “how come she’s counting?! Counting sucks! Uhhh, maybe she’s like counting how many times she’s done it.”
Is this a Christian channel?
