  • Hello & welcome, so glad you are here! I have an honest review of the new Schmincke Natural Vegan watercolors.
I did purchase these paints with my own money.
I will be swatching them by making a color chart an them experimenting with them by doing a few paintings- using various media (on their own, with regular schmincke watercolors, with inktense, with gouache, with Neocolors 11 & with Japanese watercolor Boku-Undo)

A better alternative for natural pigments would be Lutea (from Belgium I think) but I believe it is more expensive.
In the USA I saw a video the other day for an artisanal maker called "Boulder Colors".

You gave them a fair review. The consistency reminds me of Elmer’s glue with color in it. If it was me I would return them 😀.

Hi Barbara! 😊 thank you!! And you got that right 😆 Elmers glue with color in it… that’s it, that’s the consistency!!
I thought about returning them, I need to contact Jackson’s 🤔

@@Art_IsTherapy 😊. They’re great. Jackson’s is great. I had an issue once and they took care of it. It’s expensive paint and it shouldn’t be like that. Good luck 😊

This is so accurate, I bought three colors before seeing this review and they are so gummy/gluey, I do not enjoy the texture at all

There are a lot of vegan watercolors that look absolutely stunning (most of Holbein's and Daniel Smith's range for example)

I can honestly say that this is the first that I have heard of these and based on what I see here and I did zoom in to see the texture I would not buy these. Thank you for doing this review and demonstration I'm sorry that it cost you so much money that is not something you could enjoy.

Thank you for the review, and for sticking through this very hard process of painting with them😅
I think the only color I'm interested in in their new line is the dragon's blood, I'm always looking for a fun granulating red to create my own red granulating mixes.

You’re welcome! ☺️ 💖 I was ready to throw on the towel, but I persisted and completed my task with these paints 😅
That’s a good idea! Only grab the color(s) that you were interested in … that sounds like a pretty color!!

Just a thought, could your problem be the paper you used? I could feel your frustration. Thanks for the review.

Hi Suzy! I agree paper can definitely be an issue. My etchr sketchbook is actually great paper which I used but not the best like Arches watercolor paper- which I should have used.
And your welcome 🤗 Thanks for sharing & watching 💖

Oh, I think these are beautiful! I think the problem is that you are trying to compare them to regular watercolors. But they are very different and supposed to be different because they are natural. They don’t have the same fillers and minerals. They are natural and supposed to look that way. I think they are so beautiful! I like the natural color better when used alone instead of mixed with regular watercolor.

Hi! Valid point. 😊 Glad you like them.

Nah, I think you are wrong about this. Many watercolor formulas are natural too (gum arabic, honey, clove oil for example, all natural ingredients). Furthermore, many handmade watercolors offer some of the same natural pigments being used here and behave so much better with a better pigment load (and color payout as a result).
After testing it, I really think this product is subpar and Schmincke really needs to rethink their binder formula and improve the pigment to binder ratio.

The description said it was "a unique mix of watercolor and gouache", yet everyone is treating them like they are just watercolors and using techniques that you wouldn't use with gouache (like the wet in wet technique). I'd like to see someone use them basically straight from the tube with only the slightest bit of water added to help it spread, like one would do with gouache.

      Hi Amy!😊 I see your point, it’s a
good idea & thank you for bringing it up!! Either way they shouldn’t be working as they did.
Yes, the description says it’s like a fusion of watercolor and gouache but does not perform as either. It wasn’t shown in the video, but when I was doing the color chart at some point, I was using it straight from the tube at times ( I should have mentioned that 😅)
I did watch a video where the artist used these paints straight from the tube. I decided for the most part I wanted to do something different because I didn’t want to replicate what was out there already. I’m putting a link to the video I’m referring to. ruclips.net/video/mAeFIvGTRsI/видео.htmlsi=cUgECahdtqHW2yIL
      Hope this helps! 💖

There are other video reviews swatching them like that and it didn't improve things.
These are very streaky with some colors/pigments being worse than others. They aren't very pigmented either.
I think Schmincke really needs to rethink their binder formula and improve the pigment to binder ratio as well.
