I bought late enough to be able to look at this version side-by-side with the 39.5mm "older" version. Granted, it's 100% objective, but I found the pure black and white smaller/older version more appealing. Add in the 20mm vs. 21mm lugs, and this one lost out. I really like having the solar-quartz option in my collection...in either design.
I have the “older” version and I love it. It was bought for me as a gift and I sent them a link with THIS watch in the video. Idk how the wrong one got ordered, but man I’m glad it did. The “panda” variant is gorgeous and it’s been hard to take it off.
I like it. I know it is unpopular - but 41mm is not a large watch for everybody. Visually, my favorite size for my wrist is 42mm and I prefer watches in that size additionally because I need to be able to tell the time without my reading glasses. I have a few nice watches in 38mm that I bought in the beginning of my journey and it is really hard for me to tell the time without my glasses - the main purpose of a watch. Now that I pay more attention to the legibility, I also have a few 40mm watches that are legible.
The Sun shirt reminds me of the Dawn. Which reminds me of the Apollo missions, which subsequently takes me back to the days of my Archery classes when I was just a WE boy in 73. Thanks for the vibes Jodi!
I have the original SSC813 and I like it, I always change the straps on these watches to leather anyway so wasn't that bothered about the bracelet but it did annoy me how they didn't match it. Your criticism of the date is absolutely correct and people might not appreciate form the video as it is zoomed in. Not only is the date tiny but it is highly sunken, so at arms length it is basically impossible to make it out. Dateless would have probably been nicer in this case.
I have the ssc813 and absolutely love mine. Wears perfectly. Usually I am not a fan of quartz because it's so much lighter and doesn't feel like a quality product but the ssc813 is super heavy, it's great. Idk if I'd get this bigger one, I like the vintage-ish look of the ssc813 but this still looks pretty good. I definitely like the hands on this one compared to mine. Love what Seiko is doing lately, they are my favorite brand by far. Also I'd just like to add Jody, on last years as well as this years model you said something about the date placement. Honestly, it disappears unless you are actually looking for it. I like it.
Great review Jody 👍 very beautiful watch, but I'm a bit disappointed, at that price range I would thought Seiko uses Ceramic for the bezel but NO they choose the cheaper aluminium insert. Honestly at over 1k it's not a good buy. However I have heard people can obtain it around $750, then it can be tempting.
It's more of a 800 to 600 imo but seiko is creeping up in prices so ehhh. Would buy a oceanus for that price though. And odd number lug width is big turn off
@Fark yes, only a solar movement. Had it been a mechanical one, maybe justified the price tags. Worst part with Seiko, after a while their price will drop like crazy.
I had the 39mm and turned it quickly. The date was hard to read and it wore too heavy. The bracelet just looked odd and I couldn’t find an aftermarket one for it. Tried this one on the other day and was hoping for some improvements… It’s a great looking watch, but it just doesn’t work for me. Thanks for another excellent video.
I miss the days when Seiko had entry-level prices. A couple years ago I got a similar-looking watch with the same 3 dials, the size is 41mm in diameter. I do not know the other measurements. It has the mechaquartz movement, silver dial, and black register dials. The strap says it's leather but it is stiff. I only paid 159.00 and I have not had to change the battery yet. It has mineral crystal and not solar.
Seiko is in lala land with regards to their pricing nowadays. Granted it's not apples to apples but the fact that this watch retails for more than an automatic Tissot PRX is kind of wild. I really wonder how they think they can justify $695 for a quartz watch.
Jodi, Just wanted to take a moment and tell you how much I enjoy the channel. I watch a lot of these RUclips review videos you’re a con tent and being so thorough and also explaining everything in a very simple way is very valuable to me. The last two watches I bought or because of you the review in the videos keep them coming they’re fantastic!! Ted Pope
I have the solar powered SNE497 but I only paid around 250€ for it, on sale, including what I paid for an aftermarket steel shroud. I think Seiko solar movements are awesome but I just can't get over the price they are asking for these Speedtimers. When you can get a mechanical chronograph for just a bit more I think you really have to want one of these to justify the price.
I paid about a 3rd of that for my Citizen Blue Angels in Florida about 10 years ago. Still less than £5-£600 today. Keeps perfect time, no way would I pay this for a Seiko with their much mentioned quality issues. Great video as usual, Jody.
The guys who are watching channels like this are mainly people who rather buy 10 microbrand-watches from aliexpress than one proper watch. When these guys go after a seiko they buy from strange websites with huge discounts and wonder why they get watches with alignment-issues or stuff like that, because they just bought a watch that has been sent back from another customer. If you go to an actual shop and buy a Seiko you will never get one with issues. I also have quite a few Seikos. Mainly vintage watches but i also bought the new alpinist. That one in particular has Saphire, 20 bar water resistance, great lume and heritage. Something you won't get from a 50 dollars aliexpress-watch. But these guyys don't care and buy more crap
@@TheMonsterHunterTV I've bought several microbrand watches, and most of them have Seiko movements in them, and they run spot on...no issues. In the main, the whole watch is good, and i think the most I've paid is about £90. I think the issues that people have with Seiko quality, is when you're paying 90 quid, you accept it may not be perfect. BUT, for a brand like Seiko, with their heritage, I wouldn't expect alignment and finishing issues, and cheap bracelets and clasps. This watch on this video is a grand! You'll get far better quality from Tissot, for example, at that money. Seiko are far too hit and miss, and too many reviews and reviewers back this up.
@@markdarwin4390 Precisely :) The fanboys won't admit this, sadly. I do own many Seikos too, even made-in-Japan ones, and I can say that, unless you're particular about minor details, they are great watches. Many who don't see these issues are usually not particular about them. I have a made-in-Japan Seiko bought from an authosrised dealer, and the chapter ring is slightly misaligned. I didn't even notice it until I saw watch reviewers pointing out this issue, and it was a couple of years later.
I am absolutely in love with this watch! Yes, MSRP is too high, but who buys watches at MSRP? I got my SSC911 price matched at a local authorized dealer here in Illinois for $560 USD (currently $847AD). This panda-ish style is exactly what I was looking for in my 1st chronograph. One day, I want to own the Hamilton Intra Matic Panda, but I don't have $2,000 to spend on one.
I got the old one because of this new one - they brought nothing new but a worse style and larger size. I was hoping for a ceramic bezel and maybe screw down pushers and at the very least the crown due to it being part of the prospex line. the old solar version in the 🐼 is 🔥
Thanks Jason!!! Great watch but I can wear a Lunar Pilot. So that is the option for me. I think it is a bit too expensive for what it is. BUT! Jason; if you like it, enjoy it!
For this price you could get a late 80s Ebel 1911 Sport Chrono; it may not look like the modern El Primero, but it is powered by one. I paid a bit more than that for a solid gold one (though less than a Tudor steel chrono) and that 36k tick sound is just special.
I prefer the bevelled bezel of the smaller model. Everything hits the mark on the one I got which is nice for a Seiko. Fits my wrist well to so it’s a keeper 🎉
Hmm I think I like the older white more than this new silver-white. Also kind of funny given these new models are now coming out, and it is still almost impossible to get the older SCC813 panda anywhere, let alone for a discount off MSRP.
Picked mine up last week and have been loving it - the case is so much more interesting than the smaller speedtimer, and the bracelet is surprisingly good as well!
Hello Jody. The red chrono seconds hand definitely makes it look special. Perfect size for me too. Is it similar enough to el primero to make it a homage ?
Jody, I dunno why, but I always pictured you as a Sydney Eastern suburbs person. Was a bit surprised to see the package addressed to your home address in Summer Hill, in Sydney's Inner West. Howdy neighbour!
thanks for another good review. one thing: i'm 98% sure those markers are STAMPED and thus actually part of the dial, even if it doesnt look it. seiko does this afaik.
I love my Speedtimer - however the one thing that annoys the hell out of me if the fact Seiko have made no effort whatsoever to integrate the end links with the case. It looks like the bracelet was just grabbed from a random box in the Seiko factory, and doesn't really fit the watch aesthetically.
Wish they offered this without the date window. And what’s with the slow reset on the chrono hand? I have a very inexpensive chronograph with a VK63 and the chrono hand snaps right back on reset.
Jody! Thank you so much for slowing down the sticker peeling enough for us to enjoy it. So glad you listened to my plea 😁 I'm enjoying this video with a new to me ebayed Pulsar chronograph on my wrist. It has the 7T62 quartz Chrono alarm movement and it's the X138 style. Integrated bracelet and a carbon fiber look dial, with red sub-hands and a very interesting dial. What caught my eye though are the hands with lightening holes. (Not lightning holes.) Very, very racecar vibe and I think you'd like it 😃
This is sort of funny: Seiko comes out with a bigger version of their "Goldilocks" (to me, anyway) solar Speedtimer, at a moment when watches are slowly trending back to smaller cases. About a week ago, I got hole of a 90s-era Seiko SUS-series chrono (7T32-9000), and now I'm wondering if I'll ever put up with anything much over 40mm on my wrist again; this thing is even a tad smaller overall than my 017 Alpinist. Were I in the market for something new, the smaller Speedtimer would win the day handily.
My first "real" watch is my SSC001 with the V172. I quit wearing it for my brief two year stint with an Apple Watch (I know....), & picked up a few other watches here and there along the way. Just a couple months ago I went ahead and replaced the broken crystal & put in a new capacitor so it's now back in the rotation with my automatics.
Excellent video Jody. I always am of the opinion that a Chronograph needs to be bigger to be usable, at least for my old eyes. Lol. I only have two, 43.5mm Orient and a 44mm Pulsar Solar. I did order the Mr. Pagani's House of Design all blue Moonswatch version with the white bezel, it's only 40/42mm depending on where you measure it, so I'm interested to see if I can see it! Have to say, love this Seiko, but my Orient is exactly the same 3 subdial Panda dial, so I'll skip this one.
I have one of these and the only complaint I have is the end links to first link joint is really loose (looser than the other bracelet links) this allows the bracelet to hinge neatly under the watch, but at the same time it make a weird looseness between the end links and bracelet. I'll be putting the bracelet on one of my other seiko chronos anyway since I have ordered a black Bund style for it, but thought y'all should know about the first links- other than that, nice watch.
Unsurprisingly good "everyman" sizing, but compared to other watches using this movement, the RRP is just a wee bit expensive for a quartz IMO, but that's what you get with a modern Seiko.
Nice looking watch, but for this price, they should include a titanium case + bracelet and the special AR coating. I can get a new Seiko Astron (e.g., SBXY017) for much less.
I'm happy they released the 39mm one before because IMO this one is watered down in two spots: [1] The standard AL insert bezel is nowhere near as cool as the solid steel angled one of the 39; and [2] the skindiver / 62MAS case of the other one is just cool compared to this more standard one. But that isn't to scrape on anyone who likes this new one, I'm happy it has its fans. And I feel the pain of the 2-hole microadjust on my original too, unfortunately. Had to replace it with a CASIO clasp cover that has 4 microadjust holes, so that's kind of embarassing for Seiko. Great review as always Jody.
A really nice looking chronograph. And I'm not bothered at all about the color of the subdials. Actually thought they were navy blue and thought they looked great as such. But I also mistook the hands to be black with white lume...which I would have liked much more. I hate polished silver hands on a light dial. Matte black with white lume would have been very nice. And the tiny clasp with almost no micro adjustments...why?? I mean how the watch actually wears on your wrist is not small part of how much you enjoy a watch. Such a weird thing to not address after I'm sure many many people have commented on the importance of such over the years.
Just bought the light blue face version. Beautiful. The size isn't large at all- 41mm is not big. There must be a lot of tiny men out there, LOL! Band fit my 8.25" wrist out of the box perfectly. Wish the date indicator was larger- it's hard to read.
I'd love a new Presage with the hemp leaf dial.. but at nearly $800 US I'm concerned about the quality issues. I'm into fountain pens, and my Japanese brands are perhaps less adventurous than German and Italian brands, but their quality is so much better. Hope Seiko gets it together. I suspect the only way they will is if they see sales dropping.. thanks Jody; you do excellent work! Frank in Colorado
I have the blue sharp edge model. The quality is fantastic so don't hesitate there, but also don't pay full price. They're pretty commonly found at 30% off.
Just grabbed this one exactly: didn’t pay retail or near retail so shop around peeps: definitely an improved on the 39mm IMIO. The watch to my eye is more modern and the dial layout and bezel a little more striking than the first version: nice review Mr M! ❤
I prefer the last yr ssc813 due to my smaller wrist and its just a few dollars cheaper than this model too. Don't get why people are saying this model is much more expensive
Hey Jody, any chance you could review one of these: Heimdallr Titanium Case Sea Ghost NTTD Dive Watches for Men, NH35A Movement C3 Luminous Mens Automatic Watches, 200 Meter Water Resistant, Mesh Band
Seiko loves to “go large” with their comically large, pie-plate case sizes. If you buy a slice of pie, you can always use the watch as a plate. As always, an entertaining and informative review! GO LARGE, YOUNG MAN!
Great vid Jody! (I REALLY prefer the 39 mm) So, I have a question: What are the chances Seiko will put out a ProSpex level quality chronograph with a VK 67 with a 12 hour Totalizer and ditch the uber stupid “24 hour” dial……go look out the window….what a waste of dial space. Anyway, do you think there is a chance? Thanks Jody! PS can you get a VK 67 with a Day/Date…or at least a date?
I don’t mind it at all I like the solar and the look, but I think they missed the mark on centering the date frame. I mean shouldn’t be in the middle of the two markers they are being sandwiched by?
I’m really not a fan of the 60 minute chrono registers. Maybe it’s my dodgy eyesight but it’s just too hard to read the minute register. Also the three register chrono layout that is standard nowadays seems to always have one useless register. I wish Seiko would reisssue some single register 30 minute chronos like the original speedtimers used. It’s a much cleaner look and easier read.
I tried this and the old one on at my local today. Definately prefer the size of the new one, but not sure on the colours and can't justify the price. Might have to see where prices go, $700 is more where its at. Definately a decent watch however.
Very nice looking chrono, but that price?! Citizen manages to make solar chronographs for far less money, even their chronographs with more advanced features are a lot cheaper. Perhaps you should do a shootout video between one of these Seiko solar chronographs and a comparable Citizen model to see if Seiko justifies the price?
Great watch and much nicer than the original but Seiko should know better than to only have 2 micro adjust positions on clasp with no 1/2 link available. Thanks to Uncle Seiko, this now fits perfectly on my 7" wrist :)
I still like the Bulova Lunar Pilot a bit more. And the Omega Speedmaster spoils me forever. But the SSC911 Speedtimer is worth the half-price deal I got from a private seller who confessed that he's raising funds for a Tudor Black Bay Chrono. Lucky for me, the seller in Minnesota didn't put a scratch on the Seitona and sold it to me for $399 USD. It arrived today. My only real criticism of the watch is the date window. If you can't read it, why put it on the dial? I challenge even the youngest person with eagle eyes to guess in broad daylight the date through that tiny recess.
People dont realise that at the end of a decade or so the capacitors on the solar or kinetic model or the resistors, will fail and it will become a paperweight, Im occasionally offered these watches and when they break no-one wants to fix them, you can try it yourself but its not a service part in the normal run of things and a kind watchmaker will change a movement he wont repair one. Its alot of money to pay for built in obsolescence (sp?) I've thought about fitting NH35's to fugged kinetic divers but the dials are a problem, as is the stem, and if your me the hand fitting too.
What percentage of people still keep and regularly use a sub $500 (gently used) solar watch? Besides a watch is nothing more than jewelry for men. For utility use your phone or $30 Casio or Nike. I have an extensive watch collection and anyone who has this addiction knows that the cost of servicing will be very real.
Great review. I purchased the 39mm but on the wrist it was too small for me - so went instantly back in the box. I purchased the 41mm but with the black face - and love it. The hands stand out on the black face (you mentioned some issues with the “panda” colouring). 👍🏼
A much better fit for my 8.5in wrist and just looks better balanced. Also look at the Seiko SSB413P1 chrono! it's a hidden gem with sapphire crystal an amazing textured dial plus the new bracelet resizing tool for around $350 AUD. Cheers...
@@jessISaRicePrincess I agree that oftentimes even with bigger wrists small is ok, I've an 8.1" wrist myself and very minimum is about 40mm for me, but for a Chronograph, bigger is better for clarity of those subdials. My two chronos are 43.5mm and 44mm. They look better on the bigger wrist and the big dial makes them more usable for timing my boiled egg in the morning. 😁
@@jessISaRicePrincess if you have the wrist to support them, these chronos wear quite well and don't look too crazy out of place. That said, I do tend towards 40-41mm most days.
Jody!! Approx. 10% bigger. Not 5%. I know you're a history wiz and not maths but heck. Surface area = pi x radius squared. :( 10% Jody. 10%. You make all the engineers and scientists watching this cry just a little bit.
My Seiko SSC761J1 black series Sumo has exactly the same movement and is a more eligible watch. Screw down crowns, ISO certified diver and made in limited numbers and far more pleasing to the eye.
Seiko solar, that's not so common, is it? Very nice looking watch, but over 1k a bit exorbitant - cheers for quoting Aussie dollars! I also agree about the date wheel location, weird and gets camouflaged against the dial.

Missed your catch phrase here Jody: 'who ate all the pies!!!'.
Nice review as always but I find Silver on Silver never really does anything for me.
The sharp metallic lines along the bezel are very beautiful and sophisticated ❤️
What is Seiko thinking with the 21mm lugs??
Total deal killer for me.
Have the prior Speedtimer as 🐼. Really love that one, but the new one also looks fine…😊
Now that's a Seiko I could own, if only it didn't cost the equivalent of both of my kidneys as a grand seems too steep?! Great review Jody!
Is it the same size dial as the 39.4 with just a pumped up case
When I see the date aperture is not precisely centered between the 4 and 5 markers, I tune out.
my issue is are quartz movements worth this price?
A really nice looking chronograph. And I'm not bothered at all about the color of the subdials. Actually thought they were navy blue and thought they looked great as such. But I also mistook the hands to be black with white lume...which I would have liked much more. I hate polished silver hands on a light dial. Matte black with white lume would have been very nice. And the tiny clasp with almost no micro adjustments...why?? I mean how the watch actually wears on your wrist is not small part of how much you enjoy a watch. Such a weird thing to not address after I'm sure many many people have commented on the importance of such over the years.
It looks pretty nice. Well done video!
Great video Jody but honestly I was pretty surprised at the price and not in a good way. Another Seiko another pass.
Just bought the light blue face version. Beautiful. The size isn't large at all- 41mm is not big. There must be a lot of tiny men out there, LOL! Band fit my 8.25" wrist out of the box perfectly. Wish the date indicator was larger- it's hard to read.
hi , boss.
can you review Seiko 5 SNKD99K1 ? it's very underrated watch but have nice look for me.
thank you for all your content. 🇲🇾

Where did you get it?
A good buy. It's very nice indeed. And hard to beat the worry free and accurate solar quartz.
I like first version better. Everybody have different taste.
I've never heard anyone admitting to paying sticker on RUclips. Must be nice
They got the second hand alignment right! Honestly I like these and they’re a great grab and go piece. Cheers!
mine no so aligned for second hand. Can it be recalibrated?
love the colors and the hands.
That watch is an absolute stunner !! 🤤
still waiting for the pogue dial version to release 🔥 probably going to he a limited edition
Seiko translates to “compromises made for $10,000 Yen” in Japanese.
That would be wonderful.
Chronos don't normally turn my head but this has a good look.
I don’t mind it at all I like the solar and the look, but I think they missed the mark on centering the date frame. I mean shouldn’t be in the middle of the two markers they are being sandwiched by?
I got an ad for Newman's Own brand, absolutely hilarious!! This is a good Newman style, put it on a nice 3 link from Strap code and it's perfect.
It’s a much cleaner look and easier read.
the camera and lighting is looking crisp
I tried this and the old one on at my local today. Definately prefer the size of the new one, but not sure on the colours and can't justify the price. Might have to see where prices go, $700 is more where its at. Definately a decent watch however.
I like it! I'd give it a thumbs up!
I wish Seiko would bring out the Black Series Speedtimer in the 41.4mm case as the 39 is just a tad too small on my wrist.
Wish they improve the clasp to add more micro adjustments.
Very nice looking watch Great video thanks.
Jody - top right of first (outer) box - you might want to edit that out....
Looks nice, but not sure I'm paying that for it. Haha, the infamous self propelled spring bar. Lost one only last week in the carpet.
Geeeez Seiko! One needs a microscope to read the date!!! Otherwise, the watch looks good!
Nice looking watch, solar great...but a grand!!!!!! OUCH
What a beauty. I prefer the pepsi one
the more i look at this watch, the more it makes sense. would love to see a steel bezel variation
Great video as always! From a Marrickville neighbour 😅
Just down the road! Inner Westies 💪
Very nice watch Jody, like the size and for a solar mecaquartz, not overpriced. I'd buy it.
It is not a mecaquartz.
@@KC-bv9kf My point is servicing these things is impossible
bought mine yesterday here in europe for 560€, lovely watch
Great review. I purchased the 39mm but on the wrist it was too small for me - so went instantly back in the box. I purchased the 41mm but with the black face - and love it. The hands stand out on the black face (you mentioned some issues with the “panda” colouring). 👍🏼
Wish they did the new colours in a 39 version too
A much better fit for my 8.5in wrist and just looks better balanced. Also look at the Seiko SSB413P1 chrono! it's a hidden gem with sapphire crystal an amazing textured dial plus the new bracelet resizing tool for around $350 AUD. Cheers...
That's cool, looks similar to my ssb299 which is a 44mm and also looks quite good on a larger wrist.
Hmmmmm fit is more of a preference. Imo it's always good to go smaller than bigger but cool to you dude
So glad that this is not a garbage meca quartz!! Good job seiko!
Looks even more datona-esque with the thicker bezel! Watch out Pagani Design 😂
Jody!! Approx. 10% bigger. Not 5%. I know you're a history wiz and not maths but heck.
Surface area = pi x radius squared. :(
10% Jody. 10%. You make all the engineers and scientists watching this cry just a little bit.
Some say. There is noting wrong with Purple :) I can see a Speedtimer coming into my life sometime down the road..
My Seiko SSC761J1 black series Sumo has exactly the same movement and is a more eligible watch. Screw down crowns, ISO certified diver and made in limited numbers and far more pleasing to the eye.
are all of the new speedtimer 41 models made in japan ?
Seiko solar, that's not so common, is it? Very nice looking watch, but over 1k a bit exorbitant - cheers for quoting Aussie dollars! I also agree about the date wheel location, weird and gets camouflaged against the dial.
Nice but they lost me at $1100... 👍⌚️
This watch would be perfect if it was without date wheel or on the nr 6 position.
That is a hottt looking watch! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
😄 Happy saturday
Same as the old jdm big Chrono?
