Super helpful to lower the intimidation level for someone who has never torn into a transmission like this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!!
I just built this kit yesterday it took me 12hours to do,it was only my second kit I’ve ever built, it was a lil complicated but did learn a lot about how the rig works!
very usedul. Coming up on 1am EST and i've just finished the strip down and grease as it had been in heavy water sat unused for two weeks. The 2 speed shaft was stuck. This in turn meant I could go knowhere fast or slow...This video saved me a lot of heartache and time. Thanks for the great video
Couple of things to note. First the grub screw used for the pinion gear is VERY long ( not sure why Traxxas used such a long screw) and if you push the pinion back to have 100% contact with the spur gear then you'll notice that the grub screw will actually hit the spur. I think that's why Traxxas has the pinion gear so far forward. Mine was the same. Second, when you take the trans out to grease the gears pay close attention to the micro servo for the high and low speed selector. When you try and put it back on the trans make sure that there is no tension (or very little) on the servo saver. If there is a lot of tension, then simply turn the arm till the tension is reduce to minimum. This will save your servo in the long run and fix a noisy servo.
I like detailed dialog you go thru when pulling the transmission apart. It gives me an ideal what I'm looking at when I tear mine apart for future repairs. Great Video too~!
Thanks for your videos Harley 👍 Mines a day old and I opened the portals, diffs, transmission and transfer. To my delight everything was greased and other than the spur gear and engagement drive dog all gears were metal 😃
Thanks bro I just got my trx4 it was making a rubbing noise right out of the box eventually the noise went away it's probably same rubbing on the housing and my motor in esc get hot in crawling not bashing I'm going to take it apart and check thanks again bro
i know Im randomly asking but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Justus Jaziel Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I did notice my 1979 Bronco TRX-4 RTR is identical EXCEPT it came with all metal gears out of the box. Not sure when TRAXXAS made this change. Worth a look if you're unsure!
Ryobi..Good. This truck gives me a chubby. The gizzards are a work of art and actually make real 4x4's somewhat primitive in comparison. Working on our Rc's is as much fun as it is bashing them. Traxxis have a history of tough trucks and my 3.3 Nitro Revo as never broken down once in 7 years and the only damage to my Revo was when my Jack Russell caught up to it and ripped the tyres appart.
One of the best gearbox in my opinion, but in only works if you want low ratio with TRX4 axle, that axle has low ratio too, i think about 8:1 or more i guess
Bro I did fit the pinion gear to the full touch in the housing now am hearing loud noise, I don't know if it's from that or from the center gearbox, my crawler how ever does a speed of 40 mile per hour I installed a powerful motor what do you think happened, maybe the Bailon gears went bad?
any idea how to take up some of the forward/backward slop in the transmission? Doesn't look very scale with your hobbywing fusion FOC when you come down off of an obstacle slowly and the truck lurches forward and stops for a second then continues on when the gears catch up.
awesome video will defo help me when I go to remove and strip my gearbox down quick question does the gearbox come already lubricated or does that not need to be lubed up? need to strip axles and gearbox down some time soon as hearing nasty grind
@@wadecaton4017 the silicon grease that helps seal and waterproof the radio box? I just built the kit and mine is SO loud. Was thinking of taking transmission apart and regreasing everything
joe shmoe the scx10 is a proven platform. The trx-4 is new and plagued with problems allready. Just as this video shows the internal gears are plastic lol. The portal axles are breaking, the shift servos are failing, the steering servos are failing. The trx-4 is a bashers truck. All that lockable diff shit is a disaster waiting to happen. Ive owned nearly every crawler/trail truck and the trx-4 i will never own. Traxxas always has to put its foot in the door on everything. Traxxas should stick to making basher vehicles. The scx10 and scx10-2 have a much more simple setup that is WAY MORE RELIABLE.
Neal Edmondson lots of BS, I own TRX4 and it’s super reliable. I’m rock crawling with it. Zero problems so far. I seen people putting 6s brushless in them, and really abusing them, and they hold amazingly well.
MrDannyisr Neal is obviously a axial fan boy that cannot accept the fact that traxxas has built a contender to the scx10 with more features. There could be cases on the internet of trx4 failing parts. But that does not reflect all trx4 are breaking down right out of the box. I am sure if I dig deep enough I will find people have problems with the scx10 as well.
Glad you did this tear down and that you found that problem with the pinion gear. I'll check that when I get mine. Also couldn't you turn the pinion gear around so the collar is toward the motor or is the collar too thick?
✌🏻😎🏴I think it’s time to actually take mine apart to clean it. It’s so intimidating but it need to be done. Ok I’m scared 😂 You have no idea how many times I have watched this but never actually started to disassemble it 😂.
Thank you for doing a take down of the transmission, portal axles, and remote locker. It's now time to cut to the chase on the elephant in the room. What is your plan to add more forward weight bias that this vehicle needs?
+eric1138 with the body off, the weight balance isn't bad for a trail truck. If it was for Comp crawling, I'd look at some sort of small saddle pack style batteries.
I had the 2 speed transmission lock up on me while I had it on the bench. Still trying to figure it out. As a result, I lost a set pin and need to know what size they are and where l can get them. Thanks
I need to swap the transmission because it’s broken. But I can’t remove it because the battery tray screws are stripped and the skid plate screws are stripped! So I’m officially fu(ked
So ive taken my 2speed trans apart cause i noticed a few bearings were almost seized up and didnt spin well, replaced all of them and also put a bit of grease in there aswell, and when i put it back together it almost feels like the gear mesh is skipping allot, havent put it back in my rc yet. Ive watched a couple videos on youtube and cant seem to spot what i placed in wrong? Seems i put everything together properly, the teeth dont seem to be disfigured so i have no clue why its clicking like teeth are skipping, do you think its from too much grease? Or
+DeviousRC 66 the summit is their design and it's only like the summit in the fact that it has two constantly meshed gears with a Drive dog to engage them. It's a solid design and would make no sense to bash them for using it.

Hi,thankyou very much for the reply about this and for the information. Good info I didnt know.Good to know the motor is good too ty. I already ordered this model and will get it soon.TY
How well will this trans really hold up with those plastic gears?? Is it a thing like axial gen 1's change soon as it comes out of the box and are there any upgraded metal gears out for it??
That would be cool. I HATE with a passion 2wd version of almost all models of RC. They just slap a motor on the rear axle and call it done. I do, however like checking out the driving characteristics of just 2 wheels spinning, so I'll take out a driveshaft every now and then.
+The Car Enthusiast Channel I would recommend adding some grease, at least in the transfer case where it is metal on metal. The metal on plastic or plastic on plastic likely isn't as important, however still somewhere I'd add some.
Harley Designs Again thanks. headed to the LHS Thursday and I'm still on the fence. I personally would like to see a nitro trail truck. sure it would be loud and your habe to carry fuel but ever since I had 2 lipos explode in my home I've gotten rid of almost all my electrics.
What do you mean to put up bumper? Can you take all the stuff off, of course, it just bolts onto the body basically. You could easily put a new bumper on it, you would just need to trim off a couple small tabs that tie into the bumper when installed. You can see those tabs in my overview vide.
Starting to think I may just wait for the TRX-4 portal axles in the wild and in general veer away from the TRX-4 as a whole vehicle, and or just scalp the portal axles and put some other random axles underneath it than sell it lol.

LROR Land Rovers Off Road that's a big improvement over this and maybe a little more forward weight
Very helpful. Just snapped the rear portal axle on my TRX Blazer, so your vid will be very helpful in replacing it with an upgraded one. Thanks.

What type of oil for transmission gear?
I did notice my 1979 Bronco TRX-4 RTR is identical EXCEPT it came with all metal gears out of the box. Not sure when TRAXXAS made this change. Worth a look if you're unsure!
I think all TRX in regular production got the metal gears. This was an early version.

do you need to lubricate the transmittion?
Great to see the insides and out. I have seen alot of steering servos going out though.
+Nitro Revolution RC yeah, without a typical servo saver like Traxxas normally runs, they are going to be hard on servos.
Nitro Revolution RC And I heard it doesn't have a lot of power too.
Gary T. Can confirm
Power is definitely there servo sucks (but what stock servo doesn’t?)
Be nice to see a clip on how, and what's involved to alter the gear ratios for even lower gear crawling? Love your work, BTW!

The Summit 1/10 and the Brushless E-Revo 1/10 has plastic gears, and they hold up fine.
+Travis Merrix Traxxas has very good plastic gears and there is a lot of reduction in the car. They will probably be fine for quite awhile.

Travis Merrix Traxxas plastic tends to be much more durable than axial.
just so you know traxxas made a running change and the plastic gears are now metal
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could make it 2wd on the fly?
