I’ll go ahead and say it: X-Men 97 is up there with the greats like Batman: The Animated Series. Just a stellar season of television, top to bottom. Outside of comics, it’s the best X-Men adaptation, & one where EVERY team member shines. To me, Marvel hasn’t had an out of the park adaptation like this since maybe Daredevil. Exceptional writing, nailed characterizations, beautiful and poetic dialogue, absolutely stellar animation, Emmy worthy voice acting, a score that makes me feel like I can go through a damn wall (that orchestral version of the theme in the finale!!!!), fan service that makes sense to the story, etc,. This is every X-Men fans dream come true, and shows why they’re THE Marvel team and always have been. Now gimme Spidey ‘98 dammit!
I feel bad for whoever Disney hires to bring the X-Men in to the MCU. Because they now have to live up to this show, and I don't know if that is possible.
I’m PRAYING it’s a James Gunn situation, where whatever he did is totally not that bad and they can bring him back. If a guy who understands the X-Men THIS MUCH and what they stand for, it would be so heartbreaking if he turned out to be a shit-bag. Obviously we have no idea why he got fired, but he’s VERY active online and I feel like one would kinda try to disappear and put their head in the sand if it was something awful. Just speculation on my part tho. But I agree, they got some MASSIVE shoes to fill with the live action take.
The Fox movies were always disappointing solely for that reason, to see Marvel Studios not only pivot back to the show but also double down on everything about what made it great, kinda signals to me that maybe they aren’t going to actually do live action movies, just X-Men adjacent stuff rather than full on X-Men movies. And think of all the X-Men musical cues they teased to build up not to a movie, but to this show, since the show has an insane amount of variations of the theme, there’s no way the teases were for a movie.
Morph could always mimic the physical abilities of those he would morph into in the original show. For instance, in one episode, he transforms into Omega Red and uses his mechanical tendrils to take down sentinels. In that same episode, he transforms into Angel and flies.
Growing up I owned the Spider-Man Dare Devil crossover vhs and watched it all the time. So I popped the hell off seeing Dare Devil show and throw hands!
54:32 - Next Season comics they can adapt: - The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix - Rise of Apocalypse - Wolverine becomes the new Death for Apocalypse to Keep Sabertooth from becoming it - Age of Apocalypse adaptation - Onslaught!
@@MarcoBayod_MB sorta, but it was far from comic accurate and not well done. Would love to see it done better with comic accurate characterizations and costumes (i.e. One-handed Logan, Sabertooth and Wildchild, One-eyed Cyclops, X-Man).
51:18 - Morph has the ability to copy physical abilities of anyone he sees or has met. He cannot copy psychic powers or optic blast for instance, but he can copy quicksilver’s speed and Hulk’s strength, but not to their upper levels of speed or strength. However, when he copies blob’s powers, Blob’s power is not to be bouncy, but to be immovable and highly resistant to physical damage. The character bio at the end of the episode somewhat explains this.
When Wolverine stabs Magneto and says the brave are always the first time die, that’s a quote from magneto in the original series season 1, ep 13. Love a solid call back
It’s so crazy that we got animated shows like X-Men ‘97! and Invincible that are just simply amazing and you just trust the creative team, voice actors, etc more and more with each episode. Besides season 2, now I’d love for them to give “Spider-Man ‘98” that same f’n care in a revival of that series which also ended in a huge cliffhanger. I’m glad they have added characters in X97 who were guest characters in X-Men TAS, Spider-Man TAS and the other shorter run properties of the 90s with their same designs. I feel like it’s why you have to have another complimentary show. I don’t want these one offs be quick cuts or just Morph transformations (which i hope they give them more of a story as well in S2 and beyond). Fantastic show! Great Spoilercast! Loved the discussion!
Loved this. I never need a live action X-Men if they keep making this. There's no world where actual people could be this cool. I want everything like this though: X-Men, X-Force, X-Factor, Excalibur, Generation X, New Mutants, NYX etc. X-Cutioner's Song, Age of Apocalypse, House of M, Messiah Complex, AvX, and end us with a little House of X and Powers of X.
This show continued to blow me away episode to episode. I cared about the characters, the plot, the relationships. It’s an absolute triumph. Especially considering my only real touchstone for the X-Men are the live action movies.
Hot take: I don’t want a live-action X-Men MCU movie. I want a live-action X-Men MCU TV series. I want a Game of Thrones level soap opera. I want 13-hour storylines. Great spoiler cast guys! Show’s incredible I’ve rewatched episodes multiple times. Beau Demayo said morph “alters their molecular density to minic physical appearance and abilities”
Honestly I didn’t even think to myself that they weren’t focusing on Wolverine, I just noticed that they were actually focusing on the other characters 😂😂 Magneto stole the show for me, absolutely loved his arc in this season, loved this show more then I could have ever expected
Xmen 97 Xmen 92 Spiderman 94 and Batman 92 are the best Animated SHOWS America have ever created I'm English live in England was born late 70s lived 80s 90s 00s onwards I was a geek before it was a thing... 97 is absolutely brilliant I've watched it 6 times and go back to random episodes it's really quite insane if you think about it.....
I had similar thoughts about Morph but apparently, he can use anyone's PHYSICAL traits. So as far as Hulk he can have his base power but can't get AS strong as him.
I feel like they didn't focus on Wolverine because that was one of the best parts of the OG comic. Wolverine was just this mysterious guy with no real memories who goes nuts when you need him. It made you wonder what was up with him.
The executive producer of this season of X-men 97 said in a tweet that Morph was altering his molecular density to give himself super strength when he was The Hulk. Kinda weird but just wanted to say I saw that
He’s always done that, he turned into a rhino and rammed Wolverine once. He can somehow imitate physical abilities but not necessarily powers (like magnetism). But it kinda creates logic holes where there’s so many scenarios he could’ve resolved quite easily.
I don’t think you guys gave the dialogue enough shine man… magneto and Bastion their voice actors actually fleshed out the characters like Bastions dialogue truly emphasizes his hate for both mutants and human… and magnetos dialogue makes you feel for him like holy smokes… phenomenal writing
I loved the show, but thought they glossed over Wolverine losing his adamantium. It's such an iconic moment but it was maybe too brutal for the show? Also, I was hoping for an Onslaught appearance at the end but hopefully they do that later on. Great show, looking forward to next season!
Beau Demayo has clarified Morph's abilities on Twitter and said he only gains physical attributes when he changes into other X-Men. For instance, if he changes into Nightcrawler he gets the agility, but cannot teleport
From my understanding with morph they only turn into mutants whose powers are tied to their physical property. So when he turned into Charles in ep 1 he couldn't use Charles' psychic powers. So if they morphed into storm I don't think they could use her powers to control weather
If you showed this show to all of the haters who say “Marvel has lost its magic” they would be as giddy as all of us where when the first Avengers movie came out.
The crazy thing is Scott and Jean go into the future where they met a child Nathan. And the woman they are talking to is their daughter RACHEL SUMMERS and they have NO IDEA! Plus, my theory is that Apocalypse is going to bring Gambit back as a Horsemen. But he's also going to turn Wolverine and Storm into his horsemen as well. They are the only two people that were on the asteroid when it vanished that you don't see in the future or the past.
Morph can use their powers if it's tied to their physical attributes. We know this because in the original he turned into Rogue and didn't steal Gambit's powers with a touch.
He also is not as powerful as the individual who he's imitating in the show. It's why he wasn't as strong as the actual Incredible Hulk. And Jean had him shielded.
Such a great series such a great finale can't wait until season 2. Also so cool that the main writer and the main director were both African American. You can feel the genuine pathos that comes from the show.
Morph can copy physical abilities. So he played as archangel because we had wings. We would be able to play as Rogue but he would have her strength. That’s the way I took it
This was a great episode, I think it would be awesome to review X-Men 97 against the Marvel movies and shows on In Review, I'm really curious where it would land in the ranking.
According to the creators, this Morph can use the powers, but they arent nearly as potent. So while he does get stronger when he turns into the Hulk, he doesnt have Hulk Strength.

I feel like this mindset comes from people who only ever watched the show when they were little and never watched again when older to absorb the debth/nuance it always had.
@@Alex_Logan22 i had gone back to it and as they mentioned, you recognize it was there but the execution doesn't drive it home like this series does. That's the point. Most people i think figured it would be a worthwhile animated series but maybe not a 10/10 type of thing no qualifiers necessary. Very easy to be like "eh it'll be some good nostalgia and hopefully continue and even update the themes for a modern audience" and then not think about it again.
@@ericmicke4130 Some parts don't drive it home strongly but some certainly do, like the Phoenix arcs, Sanctuary, etc. The original was a 10/10 for its time so for 97 to truly live up to it in 2024, it would have to be a lot better than it was in the 90s, so yea I would've been a bit disappointed if it wasn't a 10/10 masterpiece and I was immediately stoked for it upon its 1st announcement much moreso than any other project it was announced alongside. X-Men adjacent movies like Deadpool will be really good (& crossovers), I'm not so sure how quickly they want to try doing X-Men proper if at all and if they do, I'd be more trepidatious with that.
A quick correction on the other 90s animated shows: only X-Men and Spider-Man shared a universe while the Iron Man, Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk cartoons were in a separate universe. It's definitely confusing because they all aired at the same time and a few characters (Iron Man, War Machine, the FF) had appearances in Spider-Man but they weren't the same versions as their solo shows. And they even shared the same voice actors in most cases, making it more confusing. But Marvel designated them are two separate universes in one of their official handbooks a few years back.
I dont think its accurate to say the original show was good for its time, even though it doesnt hold up when you have shows like Batman the Animated series that were good for their time and still hold up today. Things age, but real quality lasts forever.
Question for the algo: What does Greg think of the show? In the Episode 1+2 preview, he didn't love it and I'd love to hear his thoughts and if that changed. Actually, that brings up a good question: Will this be ranked in MCU In Review? Or, hell, X-Men In Review?
I disagree with Tim on the uniform redesigns, specifically Jean Gray's. I really hate how her classic design looks like a flash colored unitard with a swimsuit over it. I think the redesign makes it look way better, and it's not even that big of a difference. They pretty much just took away the crotch part.
The only issues I have with this great season are I wish it were longer as some parts are very cramped and that the writing team don't know what an EMP does (it's not the same as a power cut, it fries the tech, most devices can't work after) let alone knowing what the magnetosphere does and how it dying would lead to all life on earth dying from solar radiation. If they had technbabbled some Star Trek TNG-level nonsense of Magneto generating a massive energy-dampening field instead I'd have been fine tho it is just using real science in very bad ways that is my limit It just lead to discusoons of Magneto being a global genocider online cos ppl knew what the methods he used actually did while DeMayo was like “no it will only cause bankruptcy cos bank records and cause riots got deleted by the EMP!!” lol. I worry if next season he will blow up the sun and say “don’t worry about he super nova everyone is wearing factor 50 sunscreen” lol
@baneintherain to most people who don't read the comics and just consume the cartoons and the movies. He was put front and center cuz Hollywood figured people would gravitate to the "good, bad boy".
@elcapitan2293 uh, no. I'm not even going to agree to the gatekeeper statement of "outside of the comics". Even within the comicbooks, he's always been one of the most popular characters. You can point to whatever reasons it happened, but he's always been at the top.
@@baneintherain not a gatekeeper comment. Outside of comics he was factually pushed front and center. The comics is always about the team, telling multiple team members stories. Wolverine isn't the founder of the team, he isn't one of the leaders. What's great about the show, is it gets that. It's about the team and multiple, not just him.

That ending slapped for sure. I tired watching the olde one, that stuff doesn't hold up as well.
Are we getting an in review for this ?
Damn you Nick, I just watch Unfrosted because if you and by god I liked it !!! ❤😂🎉❤😂🎉
If they had technbabbled some Star Trek TNG-level nonsense of Magneto generating a massive energy-dampening field instead I'd have been fine tho it is just using real science in very bad ways that is my limit
It just lead to discusoons of Magneto being a global genocider online cos ppl knew what the methods he used actually did while DeMayo was like “no it will only cause bankruptcy cos bank records and cause riots got deleted by the EMP!!” lol.
I worry if next season he will blow up the sun and say “don’t worry about he super nova everyone is wearing factor 50 sunscreen” lol
There was an Avengers show, it was just extremely irrelevant in comparison.
You can be forgiven for not liking the trailer. It was a mid trailer at best. I think they were intentionally holding back.
Smash that like button! Thanks for all the dope new content KF!
X-men '97 was great but I think s2 will suck since Beau DeMayo was fired
do they ever address that Morph in X-MEN 97 uses they/them pronouns?
Just as a reminder, Morph is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns
Wolverine is NOT the best character
Wolverine IS the best character to most people. I'm glad he wasn't the focus of the show, though.
@baneintherain to most people who don't read the comics and just consume the cartoons and the movies. He was put front and center cuz Hollywood figured people would gravitate to the "good, bad boy".
Also helps the original trilogy had the best actor in them, as wolverine.
The romantic triangle needs to stop
Here's the thing...no
@@fistfulofboomstick83lmaooo just no
too bad the second season might be ass cuz they fired the guy that made season 1
Mhmmmmmm……no
It would be the third season because they already wrote the 2nd.
@@mightheal true
Yeah, it's been confirmed that he was done through season 2. So we're good for at least 1 more season.
@@baneintherain
He also oversaw all the animation work throughout though, not having him there will make for a weaker season even with his script.
