They did my boy Nightcrawler SO good. They remembered he's multifaceted; he's the comfort character, he's the swashbuckling badass, he's the devout Catholic, he's the prankster. That's what makes Kurt so fun and interesting. He had some of the best lines in the show. His eulogy at Gambit's funeral in particular stood out as a peak moment. "Every gambler has a tell. Modesty was Gambit's." He always seems to know exactly what to say. If season 2 and 3 are half as good as season 1 this might just surpass Avatar the Last Airbender as the best show of all time. One of my favorite moments was Jubilee's VERY proportional response to Bastion's slight. Easily top 5.
I like to think that Xavier was about to write "I leave everything to my X-men", but got abducted midway and everybody read "I leave everything to my ex" and then everybody was like 'He means Magneto, right?'
I really wish it hadn't been in the final trailer, as even with me choosing not to see it to go in fresher, that line was everywhere on the internet, and so was impossible to avoid a full week before it was in the show. I get why they did and why it happened cause yeah banger line, but I'd have loved to have heard it first in the correct context of the show.
I find it crazy how I've seen people complain about Wolverine not doing more in this show which is such a bizzare complaint. Like one, this isn't the Wolverinev show, two he hogged the limelight for 20 years so it's about time he got pushed to sidelines and three, he still got some great and badass moments in this show.
I find it very satisfying seeing Wolverine pushed to the sidelines. He has been in the spotlight for literally the past 2 decades. It’s about time the actual other XMen got some attention
As a Wolverine fan I completely agree, plus I think less is more when it comes to Wolvy cause he is such a good character so the small moments where he did shine he shone bright.
As a kid in the 90s, Wolverine brought me to the Xmen and if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t have cared about the other characters, nor the comics. Like Vegeta in Dragonball, I wouldn’t care about Goku if it weren’t for Vegeta. But I do appreciate the way Xmen 97 (Beau Demayo) handled Logan. All of his moments were impactful.
The love Storm got was my favourite bit. She's always nerfed in the movies and other shows but here? She's just badass incarnate. Jean being able to use her powers for more than 5mins without fainting was an added bonus too. Like you said, we got to feel invested with these characters and get involved with their stories. Can't wait for the next season to cook as well as this one did
Idk bout you but Ro was just as underused in 97. She's the most powerful one in that group and she was pretty underutilized, I'm gonna need to see more. The x men are really holding her back.
@@IllMatic97Storm, most powerful... Hahahahahahaha! Your token Black female didn't even officially become an omega level mutant until 5 years ago. Prior to that, she was nothing but an alpha level mutant with some hints of being omega. Jean Grey's first omega level classification happened as early as the 1960s. She officially became one in the mid 90s along with Iceman. Jean and Iceman were the only X-Men who were omega. Both of their omega-level powers givrle them additional abilities, primary of which is being technically immortal and conquering death. Oh, and before you mention Phoenix, there's no Phoenix here. Your Black witch is a glass cannon who's good at chanting and displaying light shows. You hit her once, and she's out cold. LOL. If she and Jean were to face each other in battle, Jean wouldn't even need to be in the same room or area as her. She could just telepathically shut her mind from anywhere in the world. That's what powerful is, and that's what being omega means. Most powerful on the team... Hahaha. Give me a break.
@hcbabyssian8936 You have problems. Also mutant classifications hardly matter. They only mean potential abilities. In terms of feats and destructive capability, Storm shits on Iceman and Phoenix-less Jean on a consistent basis.
I know for sure that we _all_ made the joke in episode two that the “Jean” that knocked on the door at the end of the episode was the real one, because she fainted.
Might be why the New Mutants movie was one of my favourites; decent character work and a romance that saved Wolfsbane. Dark Phoenix… crimes against Selene. The Gifted? That was insane. Polaris helping the grandchildren of Fenris?
@@michonnewalker4246 Yep. Polaris and the Cuckoos stole the show. Just don’t understand what possessed someone to think “let’s give the grandkids of Hydra’s dumbest duo a leading role”. And I do like that they did lean into the bipolar angle with Polaris. I swear, Leah Williams and Duggan breathed new life into her. The Chuck Austen stuff wasn’t great but it was funny.
@@jonathandoe2316 Honestly, I agree. Although, that’s the show that got me to read the comics. The first reason was because of Emma. The second was because I saw this woman in a niqab turn into sand and took down a plane. Needless to say, after reading the Morrison run and Academy X, Dust became one of my favourite student characters. And I’m hoping that she’s part of the present day team in season 2 of Xmen 97z
I love that the X-Men actually tried to reason with Bastion, only for the answer to be "Humanity would rather die than to be like you!" * Cue the missiles *
I did like that. They really are the heroes that protect those who fear and hate them. Although, because of shows like Rise of the Tmnt and Steven Universe, a tiny part of me was thinking “don’t you dare…” lol
I really wish Morph and Madeline had a heart to heart. Seriously, the clone who knows they're a clone and the nonbinary shapeshifter talking about identity and who you really are practically writes itself.
@@Nightman221k And it’s even something they recount to their teammates. Frankly, if we do get a Morph episode in season 2, if it’s not the “Cogratulations ma’am, you’ve given birth to a… blob?” Line from Exiles, it would be nice to have a flashback where they and Maddie have a good moment either pre or post clone reveal. Emma would also work since she’s the ultimate ally.
Me too. I was glad it didn’t turn out like the comics with Maddy becoming a villain forever. Her realizing that her love for her child was the most important memory to her.
They simplified everything and streamlined the story into a far more coherent form. Jean dies, months later, Scott marries Maddie (a regular human that looks like Jean), gets married, has a kid, then abandons them both to be with a resurrected Jean, Maddie goes insane with grief, makes a deal with the devil and gets demonic powers to become a Queen of Hell and wants to sacrifice Nathan. The show told the story much better.
Something else I loved is how the series referenced the psychic affair that was an obvious nod to Scott doing the same thing with Emma Frost in the comics. Only in _X-Men '97,_ I feel it makes a lot more sense, because… well, Madeline was the one that Scott has the *actual* connection with (at least in his mind), and who knows _when_ Sinister made the switch. So, wanting to continue a relationship with the literal mother of your child-doubly so when your son was taken from you, and you feel you abandoned him like your father did you? Yeah, makes a whole lot of sense. I'm not saying that I _agree_ with Cyclops' actions, but I _do_ understand them. Being able to rationalize why someone does the things they do is a huge part of making a fleshed-out character, imo.
I'm just so happy to see My man Scott Summers finally get redeemed and receive the respect he deserves. 97 Did Cyclops more justice in 10 episodes then Fox did in any of their multi billion dollar movies. Jean Grey also got some much needed redemption as she's now actually useful and has a real character arc. My only complaint about the show is the pacing. I think it goes to fast rushes through some plotlines. The Life death episode with storm should have been 2 full episodes and not a B plot. The Inferno storyline of Madeleine Pryer should've least been stretched to a 3 part mid season finale. Genosha would've made for a hard cliff hanger finale and bastion could've been the overarching villain of season 2.
My first Scott was in X-Men Evolution and admittedly the last 2 decades being not good to him, and in spite knowing that this is a sequel to the '97 series it sort of feels like seeing MY Scot again, just older :>
I'm sure they would've, but they would've also had a hard limit of 10 episodes meaning they had to cram in a lot of stuff, try to have material for every character while still telling a good story.
I really enjoyed the portrayal of Wolverine and Morph's relationship. In the original first season run, Morph was fully intended to die, and only got revived due to studio meddling. From that, Wolverine was the only one who was genuinely hurt by Morph's loss, and the show spent a lot of time showing that. Unfortunately, once Morph came back, they were sidelined due to their mental health recovery, so we never got to see how the two characters would have hung out in the classic 90's setting. Morph in the first two episodes is seen snickering/cackling to themself in a comedic way, so it can be implied that Morph is a trickster who uses his abilities to play jokes on the characters; and we see exactly that in his first scene in 97', using the form of the Professor for some really dark humor, considering the circumstances. Transposing that behavior to Wolverine, I think Morph might have helped Logan in the past with his personal traumas. Logan has outlived so many people, and I can imagine that Morph, in an attempt to console their friend, would morph into those from Wolverine's past and tell him the hard truths others don't/can't tell him. Thus, when Morph is presumed dead in the original series, Wolverine would have lost someone who helped center him. We can see both sides to this in 97' when Morph turned into Jean in the club and rubbed the situation in Logan's face, just for him to finally get say what has been on his mind all day. Same with later when Morph offered the chips and beer, reading the situation, and knowing that Logan would respond better to the tough love of a quick fight to get him to let those emotions out. This is most clearly/awkwardly shown in the Goblin Queen episode in the shower, where Madelyne, having already read Morph's mind in this situation, exposits some revealing commentary on their personal thoughts. Morph can only ever joke about those things, because if they admits their feelings to themselves, it might ruin their friendship with Logan. And once he meets up with the rest of the gang, he immediately compares the situation to Hell, even before the Dante's Inferno stuff starts, suggesting that Logan finding out is the last thing he would ever want to happen. Finally, there's the last line of dialogue for the season, Morph finally admitting their true feelings, but still framing it in a way where they can back if confronted poorly, excusing it as for Logan's benefit more than their own inner desires. Morph is a complex character, and I hope they continue with their plot despite what some might say. I personally loved the subtle story telling this season.
I wouldn't call it meddling that brought them back since apparently they were shocked at how popular they were with fans and that arc of them tied pretty well into Sinister's introduction.
Morph is clearly in love with Logan, something the show built up over the episodes (and Beau confirmed) but Logan is straight. It’d be deeply inauthentic to his character to have him reciprocate Morph’s feelings. The only time Logan has been gay was with Hercules in another Universe. He did however, have an open relationship with Scott and Jean, but it was mostly focused on Jean. I doubt we’ll see either story adapted for the show though. I do think however, Morph will find a love interest in a later season. And I hope he does - he’s a delightful character, and also as a gay man, I don’t like the trope of “gay man pines for straight friend” - thankfully though, the voice actor said the exact same thing. So I think Logan, who knew Morph’s feelings all along, will delicately let him down.
Maybe because of his own personality and trauma Morph mirrors the desires of others into himself. Like a mirror he wants to please people. He puts himself second before the others and he can't be honest with himself.
The part where Morph turns into Sabertooth with Wolverine playfully chasing him still amazes me. Logan could have easily been angry, but no, Morph actually brings out the best in him.
I’m so glad that this so did justice to Cyclops and actually giving the spotlight to the team itself and not just only focusing on Wolverine, Charles Xavier, and Magento, something that I have been complaining about the FOX movies for years.
The best part of Wolverine being slapped in the backseat, is that it’s REALISTIC. Wolverine is the Batman of the X-Men. He’s a part-timer of sorts. We’ve seen in multiple times and even saw it this season, where he takes opportunities to try leaving the X-men to just live life. He loves the X-men, but he wants to simply live life. Also, for the love of god, Nightcrawler was fucking IMMACULATE
They didn't cook. They straight up Iron Chefed our ass like we was the special ingredient of the day. 🧑🏾🍳 Somebody needs to give Beau DeMayo his Michelin stars bruh.
My **ONLY** complaint is that Morph didn't have enough of the spotlight. I really hope season 2 utilises them more from a narrative perspective. Other than that? Amazing show, absolutely killed it!
Agreed. In the intro there was always that shot of Morph running from Sinister and they did nothing with it. They just told him he's ugly af and that was it.
I think we could get some pathos, some bits about their identity regarding their relation to non-binary. And probably explain the mechanics of their powers in why not just turn into the Hulk all of the time, which maybe could have them more successful in a fight instead of being a cameo they don't want to be too successful. I think Morph could be really interesting in being a good utility power with depth that uses humour to mask insecurity, and maybe cannot just choose anyone's powers to copy at any time.
all I can think about is how morph could EVER lose a fight his powers are so fucking busted and awesome but he's basically just used as support and a cameo machine so yeah I hope he gets more screen time and character development next season cause he is a pretty cool character
I realize that is probably the reason why you want to see more of Morph and mean no harm in saying that, well they ar enot that deep of a character. Their only reason to have any hype is being non-binary. This is something and it is representation but, it fully served its purpose. In order to have more of them you need storylines and, well they ar enot really a character (so far). They are a token. People like them because their tokenism and thats ill-faithed, sorry. There's absolutely no logical reason to have more of them. They were perfectly fine as they were. I wouldn't mind a bit more of them with Logan but FFS don't have them and Logan be a thing. X-Men knows their share of tragic love stories and this has the making of one. I'd like to see Logan struggle to put him down and remain a friend despite knowing the truth. It can be interesting and it will involve Morph more. But besides that they have had enough exposure for a character that was supposed to be dead. And again I mean no harm, I'm just trying to point out the reasoning for wanting more of them is shallow (it seems). Nightcrawler, Colossus, the Maximoff twins, hell the Brotherhood of Mutants, Angel, Beast these are just a few of the iconic characters that deserve a spotlight way ahead of them. Even Sunspot didn't get enough really. Just a flash back to the episode in season 1 (origianl series) when Morph was heavily involved and was the most annoying thing on earth. Please don't do that again, things haven't chnaged just because they've labeled them as non-binary. Let them be a natural part of the team. That's exactly what succesfully introducing diversity and acceptance is tbh. But again, I do not recognise myself in them so perhaps I am missing a huge part of their appeal. Perhaps they deserve an episode about their identity to tackle an issue, I don't know. I just don't see how it will be...well, warranted.
@@Galloglaoch The reason I want more of them is to bring them out of the token status. Theres a lot that can be done with a shape shifter that isn't just cameo machines. Their love for Logan being 1 sided could be heartbreaking but mostly I'd just love to see them doing more. I don't want Logan to like Morph back tbh and frankly don't really mind either way if Morph finds a love interest. It would have been more satisfying to see them do more to bring sinister down given the importance between the 2 made clear in the opening constantly. All the other mutants you listed there I also love! Difference being that they all had something to do in the plot. Unfortunately you could remove Morph from the season entirely and all you'd be missing is a few quips and maybe Logan has to sit out of a fight for a few minutes with how often he falls out of the sky. So to be clear here, I don't want Morph to hog the spot light, I simply want them elevated to be actually relevant to plot and not just the easy to dub/edit out representation that seems to happen constantly in all Disney owned properties. I don't even necessarily care if the story given to them revolves around their gender identity, just that they're treated like a full character like literally everyone else who shows up in the title sequences. Nightcrawler is my favourite mutant of all time, closely followed by Storm and I loved them both so much in this! Genuinely this is my favourite depiction of Nightcrawler on screen to date. (I'm awful at typing tone, just to be clear, this was all meant with a kind/clarification tone, not to be argumentative or hostile)
@@penguinspenguins2376 static is a DC property, DC is owned by WB, and recently WB has been cutting projects and tax writing off shows that barely got a chance to stretch. I don't need to predict the future when the present is so blatantly obvious. Cmon now, it ain't happening.
X-Men 97 is a pure blast of geeky adrenaline, I enjoyed pretty much all of it, Favorite character was definitely Beast, his philosophical lines were great. The "gamer" episode was amazing. Sure their was a few things that were a tad bothersome however the people who hate this don't know how to relax and have a good time with it.
Valerie Cooper's speech when she said " I had the Most Profound sense of Deja Vu, like The Past, Present, Future, doesn't matter and never did, because we keeping coming back to this ugly place" As someone who has endured racism and prejudice as a Black Queer man. I have seen it over and over again so many times and through so many circumstances. I cried a little
One of my favorite lines was when Magneto saved the Morlocks and said "you deny these outcasts the indignity of even your own waste!" Definitely leaning into class struggles and how people criminalize the homeless just for trying to survive.
For the record, the “Karen” is Val Cooper. She’s the Amanda Waller of Marvel. And calling her Karen is surprisingly fitting. She’s Xmen’s best Frenemy. The Rogue story was fantastic. Plus, considering how her mothers behave in the comics, it’s always nice to see that potential bite to her. Apocalypse coming back is good but, if he’s doing Necrosha, there are two characters I desperately want them to use; Destiny and the legend. The iconic. The Dark Mother herself; Selene! The changes really worked for the story. I am a big Maddie Pryor fan and whilst I would’ve preferred her and Alex, this story version really did nail down that she and Cyclops got caught up in the trappings of an evil man and neither of them are at fault for that truly. And I loved Cyclops in this. This is the best Jean has been in decades. Probably because we actually look at her friendship with Storm, part of her life outside the love pentagon and, most importantly, we see that she’s got that “sanctimonious bully” side that can and will lash out. They even made Bastion interesting. That’s an incredible feat. I loved that it was so soapy. So much so that Disney actually released a Days of our lives themed trailer. I’m not usually one to obsess over cameos but dear god, the moment episode 1 hit and we had the newspaper that had the iconic Dust, Marrow and Stacy X? I was strapped in. Although… Dazzler dies now? I will say I’m torn as to the lack of Fenris in the Trial of Magneto and Storm’s depowered arc. But they may have detracted from things. Especially if the quiet part is said out loud. I got back into Xmen last year through the podcast Cerebrocast so I’m really glad to see this side of marvel back on the air.
They did my favorite style of scene: Cops/Army coming to get Magneto: Surrender, we’re using non-magnetic guns and have no metal on us. Magneto: Bitch there’s metal everywhere! (Lobs the copters at them.)
Hey, Jean Grey had a good adaption with Evolution. I also like Cyclops in that version. Also, liked the love triangle of Rogue, Scott, and Jean. Plus, the show acknowledged that Rogue and Nightcrawler are siblings.
Evolution I think has the best portrayal of Scott and Jean as individual characters, as well as the best depiction of their relationship. Even better than XM97. And yes, Rogue and Kurt both confronting Mystique for being a terrible mother to them both was iconic!
Evolution was fucking lit! Had the best Brotherhood of Mutant too (yes, no EVIL moniker). LIke, they are just frat-boys (and girl) that want to be accepted and be cool and don't follow the rules and ultimately are easily influenced by evil mutants in fulfilling their schemes. Toad had a great theme, Wanda and Quicksilver were pretty cool, Blob too. So yeah...the show had great X-Men and great Brotherhood of Mutants. That's more than most of the X-Men shows can boast about.
The VERY big thing I loved about this series, it brought The X-Men back. The comics have been fantastic since 2019 when the Krakoa era kicked off, but now outside of them, the X-Men finally has talking point that's not negative in media adaptations Lord knows I couldn't handle more FoX-Men outings.
True, the quality varies with the films, but let’s not forget that Fox gave us some truly great X-Men films. X2, Days of Future Past and Deadpool are _excellent_ movies. And “Logan” is not only a truly exceptional comic-book movie, but legitimately one of the greatest pieces of film in cinema history, in my opinion. That movie truly transcended its genre and was truly something deeply special.
As someone with adhd, Autism, and a hidden physical disability I really felt it when you talked about how some people agree that people should hide their differences to make everyone else comfortable. People who say that never consider the harm it may do to the person hiding things all in the name of other's comfort.
RIP Rouge x Gambit 😢 love them so much. I do like that they did used a different conflict for them in the story. I hope they become endgame in the end.
... this video finally made me realize that no, the reason I suddenly saw X-Men videos in my youtube feed wasn't because the internet was going through a bout of nostalgia for no reason. Well, reached the 13 minutes mark, I'm convinced, I'll be back later!
That split second shot of JJK at the words “just because the fights are great doesn’t mean the rest of the story isn't undercooked slop” cut deep. It was the first shounen in years that felt it had finally recaptured what made Bleach and HxH great, and instead it ran for a fraction of the time they did while exploring a a world and a power system that ended up being deep as a puddle. Feelsbadman.
My only complaint about it was the team selections in the final battle. If you had just swapped them around then the fights would have gone way better.
Are usually come here for the nuance takes, it is both surprising and pleasing that you have almost nothing bad to say about this one. I was one of those kids that grew up on the show and has kept up with the comics, and I fucking loved this Roller coaster. I am right there with you, I cannot wait to see what apocalypse does. Personal highlight was jubilee getting a chance to be awesome because even in the comics she’s always been mid to low tier power wise for my OTP of Remi/rogue, I freaking loved it. I’ll say it loudly, gambit pulled off moves to make Levi Ackerman blush.
I love how they fill every little niche. Drama, hero stuff, found family, horror (with the hallucinations and that uncomfortable dance between Mag and Rouge /j) Not to mention that they open the books more about certain characters and their traumas like Morph and Kurt.
I kinda saw Roberto siding with Magneto was partially his bitterness, partially because Magneto was the guy who'd lead the X-Men the entire time he was there. Some guy the world thought was dead shows up going on about peace after a massive terror attack and being turned over to robots by his mom wasn't exactly gonna convince him of anything.
I think what was missing with Sunspot was maybe a scene early in the season where Magneto took Roberto aside to have a heart to heart, or initiate some kind of mentor/student relationship. If they had interacted like that before things got BAD then his choice to support Magneto might have made more sense.
This show has everything from demons to aliens to futuristic insane game show hosts but it's one of the shows that just makes you roll with it because you're just having so much fun through the whole thing.
I do want to point out something about Episode 5, apparently one of the main writers for the episode knew people at the Pulse Night Club Shooting several years ago. Once I larned that fact, so much about the episode clicks. From the lights, music, atmosphere, and then the sudden shock and horror makes me think the writer was using his friends accounts on what happened.
To address the question of whether you can enjoy this without watching the entire 90s show first, the answer is a resounding YES! I originally came as a fan of the X-Men films with no knowledge of the original 1990s cartoon and absolutely loved X-Men '97. In fact, it was '97 that got me hooked and convinced me to watch the original show!
I sincerely love that when Jean/Madelyne was going into labor, Logan bursts in and fully believes that Apocalypse could have been back again. Even though the last time they saw him, he was thrown out of time and un-made entirely. Which is even more funny when you realize that he actually WAS back when he possessed someone trying to resurrect him back from the astral plane.
I was never really into X-Men; I was only an MCU fan. I did watch the first live action X-Men movie, but it really didn’t stick with me that much like the MCU did. After watching 97, that completely changed! It’s such an incredible show and I really fell in love with the X Men world and its characters.
I’ve been hoping you’d cover this show for weeks let’s go! Sunspot is the shows biggest flaw in so many ways but honestly this show is so god damn beautiful and is doing so many things that I can’t even criticize it for a second before we’re onto the next world shattering amazing quality moment
I'm genuinely curious about how he's a flaw in the show. Respectfully, why led you to think that? I figured his characterization is on point. He's confused, desperate to avoid conflict and wants to have fun in this foreign scenario until it becomes literally impossible to cope and ignore reality. To me his turning point to taking Magneto's side was "no more half measures", as he saw his already fragile relationship with his mom crumble even more
@@somethingunusual8456 I personally didn't like the change of his origin and them not making him an Afro-Brazilian. He was also just not as interesting as everyone else
His origin was not changed. He was attacked at a football game because of skin colour. The show makes clear that his x-gene activated years earlier, burning down their houses. It could very well be because of the attack at the football match. He _is_ less interesting though, mostly because he’s an entry point/avatar for new watchers. Just like Jubilee was in the original. Having said that, he’s _much_ more interesting than Jubilee was in the original series.
@@micah459 I can't say about interesting because it's really tough to compete with such a heavy cast, but about him not being afro brazilian, he doesn't confirm nor deny it?? the only thing that is a problem (I'm also brazilian but not black, so I can't speak properly on that issue other than what my black peers say) was his inconsistent skin tone, which even when affected by light or shadow changed way too much compared to the other characters. He appeared way lighter in some scenes, in which he could pass as a tan white guy
@somethingunusual8456 That's the thing. He used to have darker skin and black features but recently, Marvel has been making his race look more ambiguous. It doesn't make it better that he's usually played by Brazilians that have no black in them when he's in live action. I just personally feel like they're trying to wipe away his blackness which played a big role in his origin
I think the most interesting scene in the series is when Magneto shows up with Asteroid M and is giving his offer to the X-men to join him. The two who join, Rogue and Roberto were the ones most directly affected by the events of the story, Rogue on Genosha, losing Gambit, and Roberto being betrayed/given up by his family. The rest of the X-men who watched Genosha happen on a screen from a thousand miles away still cling to Charles' dream. I would be hard pressed to believe any mutant who lived through the Genosha attack wouldn't side with Magneto. It must say something about how we can view a massacre, like a school shooting, through our screens and still be idealists, but extreme events can create extremists.
As a long-time X-Men fan and fan of the original series, even though I wasn't born when the show was around, HOLY S*** , THIS SERIES IS EXCEPTIONAL (pun intended). No joke, this series is so masterfully well written, with absolutely phenomenal animation and truly compelling characters and complex, deep, dark themes that genuinely make you question the inherent societal bigotry and how to process internal thoughts of fighting for equality and how to do so in a way to help society grow from the status quo of discrimination and to do more than allow yourself to become numb to a neverending struggle that you feel like isn't your responsibility. Truthfully, this series is some of the *BEST MARVEL MEDIA WE'VE EVER SEEN SINCE ENDGAME* (except No Way Home, GOTG3 and Loki)! Compared to how phenomenal this series is, Fox movies seem like amateur student films with such a bare-bones understanding of how truly incredible and insane the X-Men stories can be when you truly hire people who care about these amazing characters. After watching this show and its epic finale, Bastion became one of my favourite X-Men/Marvel villains. Theo James especially gave a superb performance as Bastion; now, whenever I read a comic featuring Bastion, I'll hear his voice. Not only him but the entire voice cast, especially for Cyclops, Magneto, Storm, Jean, Charles, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee, Wolverine, Morph, and Nightcrawler, all did a tremendous job. Bro; the number of cameos in this series is insane! Cyclops and Jean saying goodbye to Cable/Nathan had me in tears🥺. 10/10 SEASON 1 I NEED A SEASON 2 NOW!!!
They NEED to keep the quality at this level. I fucking LOVED this show, but knowing Beau got the boot and stuff worries me. I also was so VERY INVESTED in the ships, which is something I usually just enjoy on the side while getting invested in the lore. 12/10 show.
After watching this show, I realized something. Charles is so easily able to criticize Eric because he's never actually seen genocide. Even when offered the chance to go back in Eric's memory to when his village was invaded by the Nazi's, Charles doesn't do it. I get the felling that, when Onslaught comes, it won't be from Magento poisoning his mind or whatever it was in the comics. It will be from Charles finally seeing what Eric has seen, and having it break him.
The scenes with Charles and Magneto in Magneto’s mind where Charles tried to relate as also having g the same darkness and troubled waters was very disingenuous. Magneto was a child that was captured by Nazis, held in a concentration camp. His family were all slaughtered and the other Jews (and Gays and Gypsies) were all tortured, gassed to death, shot or beaten to death in front of him. Not to mention they were all starving, and died of starvation and disease. And Charles was the child of multi-millionaires who lived in a giant mansion and had everything his heart desires. Their struggles are not equal. Xavier has no concept of true suffering.
@@arc7375 I think deep down Xavier knows that, and he's afraid of it. He's afraid that, if he sees what Eric has seen, that he'll also come to the conclusion that Magneto was right.
@@seanwilliams7655 But the theme generally is that Magneto IS right, but his solutions and ideas are WRONG. Despite him being right the RIGHT way is Charles' way. Co-existance, humility, patience and constant reassurance that the mutants are allies not threat, that the mutants are not coming FOR them but WITH them, that mutants and humans are ONE and can prosper together. All that despite humans constantly finding ways to fight against and murder mutants. Because as many X-Men stories have made as a point - every time someone as Magneto takes a stand, challanges the humans, wants to dominate or take from them, their worst fears are prove right and their own methods of fighting back have been justified. Magneto being right makes people like Trask also right about the mutants. That's what makes the X-Men heroic. They don't turn against all of humanity, despite some humans doing attrocious things to them. They remain vigillant that mutants and humans can and MUST live together in peace and no other outcome is satisfactory. It is pretty clear with the whole Magneto being a holocost survivior and knows the worst humanity cna do, yet often his solutions are to do to the humans what he fears they will do to them. Classic turning into the thing you despise the most trope.
@@Galloglaoch Magneto became what he is after normal humans already proved him right. How many times should mutants turn the other cheek only to get slapped again? If anything, neither Magneto or Charles is right. Killing them before they kill you will only lead to destruction, but constantly holding your hat out begging for tolerance despite the atrocities against your people teaches humanity nothing besides that they can do whatever they want and the oppressed group will just take it. If anybody was right, it's Cyclops in the comics. He realized mutants might have to negotiate with humanity, but they need to do it from a position of strength unlike Charles.
I do agree with you. This animated show is probably one of the best I’ve seen that has been released by Marvel especially if you compare it to “What if”. They not only were able able to imitate the art style (done by the animation studio who did Legend of Korra) of the original animated series but also how the seasons are done (just rewatch the first season, it has so many storylines from the X-Men comics in just one season) I just hope season two was given a bigger budget so that the season can have more episodes to make the plots lines more fleshed out and polished which could possibly improve on the Character-driven stories as well. (I mean I could be wrong but I am just saying)
Episode 5 of this show is going to be talked about for years to come..not one person I've spoken to or one reaction video online wasn't shaken to the core
The only gripe I had was the pacing in the first 4 episodes, leading up to Genosha. I wanted to see more of Magneto leading the X-Men, and we barely even got any Madelynn Prior besides her debut episode before she was killed off. That said, with that being my only gripe, everything after that flowed so naturally that the pacing even ceased to be a complaint from that point on.
Great show, loved it when I was a kid and 97 takes it to a new level. My only complaint: Why would they put Wolverine on the team that confronts Magneto at the end? Y'all forget his bones are covered in metal? 🙄
The thing about Xavier in this show is that his dream is the reason the entire season happens. He begged Magneto to follow his path and try his dream, and Magneto loved him enough to give it his all. The problem is the dream isn’t viable in practice because there are always going to be leaders in the world who would rather kill mutants than accept them. Magneto knows that, and Genosha just made him give up any chance he would follow it, because that dream died with Genosha, and Xavier is too stubborn to accept that even when he knows it’s true. It’s like Cyclops said, Xavier is holding on to what should have been while being buried by it
I LOVED ALLL OF IT! I thought giving Baston a chance was annoying but it is the Xmen way to try to help. Jean and Storm's sisterhood was my fav moments!
@@IllMatic97Their close friendship was shown very heavily in the comics. The XTAS show, as well as every cartoon and movie, never adapted it. But it was always there.
Tbh I hate how the viewers blame Charles for being in space and not coming back to Earth right away, they characters doing it is fine but it just rubs me the wrong way when viewers does it. As far as he knew everything was fine on Earth, hell him coming back would show that he wasn’t actually dead in the first place. I wonder if those dame people would have blamed Scott and Jean/Mady if they had their son maybe 3 weeks early and left the team as a result. Because if they wouldn’t then they are hypocrites Altough it felt great to see Magneto snap and shut Charles up with a meral strip and having Scott go off on him but still say "No infighting, we have a job to do" when the time came for everyone to work together
I can understand Rouge, not the Magneto angle but for the fact that her powers render her ability to physically feel useless with pulling a Shang Tsung. Magnus just so happened to make her feel secure, physically.
I mean, it’s very firmly established that Rogue and Magneto were already an item years before she met Gambit, and that as the single person that can physically touch her during a lifetime where any physical touch can kill someone, her being drawn to Magneto was deeply understandable.
@@arc7375Not really. I get why she would be *tempted* by Magneto due to the fact that he can touch her, but emotionally what connection do they really have? The Magneto and Rogue relationship is frankly shallow, it honestly comes off as serious as a purely physical relationship rather than the emotional one Rogue has with Gambit. I can honestly only see Magneto as some temptation rather than a true love interest for Rogue.
is no one going to address the irony of Magneto referring to humans was "genetically inferior" despite being a holocaust survivor?!?! I don't know it just that line in last episode really stuck with me.
That’s what makes him a great villain, magento is literally the text book example of somebody going through hardship who then pushes hardship into others as a way to protect himself again. Magento becomes the thing he hated most and is too far in the dark path to see it most times
As someone who has been watching x men shows and movies since x men evolution, the only thing that confused me was Rouge flying and being super strong, I thought her power was momentarily stealing those from people that she touched, so seeing her move like Superman is super weird, it’s like finding out Wolverine or Cyclops can also fly 😂, I can’t be the only one that didn’t know this right? Right?!
I love how in the show, Magneto's reaction to Genosha is much more omnicidal but it feels in character whereas in the comics he pretended to be Chinese, got hooked on drugs, killed Phoenix, and, oh yeah, set up concentration camps in New York. Then it was retconned away and his reaction was chilling the the wreckage till Xavier ran into him.
I loved that they kept the melodrama so alive, it wasn't my favourite back when I was a kid but now it adds another factor to everything going on, like spice to the action and politics.
Fun fact, even fans of the old cartoon who watched it when it came out had a bit of whiplash. The origional show was 'soft cancelled', where much of the final season shown only once and never rerun. So if you slept in on Saturday morning and misses it in the 90s, you potentially missed it permanently. So a lot of old fans didn't know Xavior was 'dead'. Hell, people didn't know why Morpho was back as he died in episode 1 of the series and was brought back in the final season!
Dear Mr. Sarcastic Chorus, In your shipping discussion videos, have you ever thought about doing Kim Possible/Ron Stoppable? I know that one of your pet peeves is the show ending on a final kiss. With the surprise season 4, it gave the writers a chance to actually explore the teens' dynamic as a romantic couple.
My biggest problem is superhero fatigue. People talk about movies, but 2024 animation has Invincible, X-men, Batman, Spider-man, Superman, Moon Girl AND My Hero Academia. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.
Twenty years after I stopped collecting the comisc and my X-Registry just popped wide open and flooded my brain with names I hadn't thought about in two decades. And my sweet darlin' Jubilee is back!
9.5/10 Amazing show. I even liked the Mojoverse episode. My only mild critiques - it sped run through too many plots. I assume the creators didn’t know if they would get another season. I also wish Beast had a touch more to do, but there are like 50+ characters, so understandable. Gambit needed more time before his ending. I don’t need to see the Sh’ar ever again (except Deathbird. She can step on me any time) This is minor stuff. The show is amazing.
@@christopherbennett5858Let’s also not forget Agatha Harkness. But most of all: The origin of X23. Also, Evolution Rogue was for many years my spirit animal. Evolution is amazing. And I preferred it vastly to XTAS. It was by far the best versions of Scott and Jean and their relationship. And Jean was an absolute powerhouse and incredibly competent and integral to the success of the team. If only they could’ve made their season five, where Jean’s mutation continued to evolve and become “Phoenix” just as it did in the original Phoenix/Dark Phoenix saga in the comics (where Phoenix was just Jean, and the Phoenix Force is a later retcon).
fantastic video! there was so much to love about '97 and you pointed out just about everything that settled right with me. Excellent commentary, gonna go see if you have an Invincible video or two to watch next!
Ive never said this with more sincerity and gravity. This Is Perfect. They did everything so amazingly perfect and the messiness most of all. These characters are beautiful, powerful, and have just such an enragingly BAD time at life. As it should be. Because when they Do win? They win hard as fuck. Im also REALLY here for the Morph angle. That just feels right. In that its heartbreaking
I adore Scott Summers and bless his heart he tries…..but poor baby is a hot damn mess who drops the ball when he’s put on the spot because as much as he’s a damn good leader and combatant, he can hardly handle confrontation or emotions outside of fighting. Plus okay he’s a wild ass spot.
I've spent the past decade pretty sick of how almost everything Marvel now has to tie into the MCU, or be influenced by the MCU in some way, even in the fucking comics! So to say that this series makes me excited about Marvel for the first time in years, is an understatement. Also, no one does soap opera drama, qu33rcoding and shipping better than the X-Men.
That’s why I was all in on the Krakoa era of the comics because, for a good while, since it wasn’t connected to the MCU, I didn’t have to be concerned. Plus, so many characters got their flowers. Mystique and Destiny are reunited, Martha Johannson finally has a body, Karma finally has a girlfriend and Emma Frost and Storm were being the best they’ve been in years. Heck, even books that many didn’t like were fun. I mean, you mean to tell me there’s a corporate drama miniseries where Monet and Angel team up with Mastermind, Trinary and Selene to take down Fenris and the business rival that thought “yeah, we can work with Hydra’s answer to the Lannister twins”. That was fun.
I love x-men and have for a long time, i grew up watching the 90s show and reading the comic. I always known that its been a allegory for racism and other forms of attack marginalized groups, I love how they handle the people who are against the mutants and make them kind of understandable for the 5 seconds you think about it till you look under the hood and realize that "oh their completely surface level and that's the point". The only thing i have a issue with the handling of this and the type of allegory is that mutants are dangerous, its not really the same as racism as no matter what race you are we are all pretty much the same besides the color of our skin. Mutants on the other hand are actually dangerous and all it takes is one powerful mutant to destroy countries. X-men isn't the only form of media that does this and i have this issue with almost all of them, people have a right to be afraid of mutants if all it takes is one of their abilities to activate and everyone around dies due to the amount of radiation coming off their body (actual event in the comics). Its like saying that I shouldn't be afraid of every guy that's born with a nuke in their chest, sure it only has a 0.0001% chance of going off but why would i wanna be anywhere close to them incase it goes off.
I do wanna follow this that I'm completely against all forms of prejudice against anyone. Races that racists would call "dangerous" are nothing like mutants cause they can't kill me with their eyes, same goes with religion and whatever country your from.
I hope they adapt his dad and some recent part of his birth, because that stuff is really fun.
Nightcrawler became my favorite X-Man after one episode.
@mikhaelgribkov4117 didn't they completely retcon that whole thing? Been a while since I read xmen tbh
@@mx9226as he should. He's been my favorite since the films. But this version of him is peak Kurt Wagner.
Season 2 I'm ecstatic about...its Season 3 that I'm worried about
I like to think that Xavier was about to write "I leave everything to my X-men", but got abducted midway and everybody read "I leave everything to my ex" and then everybody was like 'He means Magneto, right?'
AHSHHSHAHHSHSHAHA LMAOOOO
So he meant to say he left everything to his “ex-men”?
It’s canon I was the pen
this made me laugh unreasonably hard
“What did you expect? Black leather?” Was honesty the greatest line in the show.
Kevin Feige pretty much gave the cast and crew 100% creative control. But you can't convince me that wasn't his direct input.
Who said that and when again?
Just watch the first trailer/teaser, thats what i do. ❤@@stryke-jn3kv

I find it crazy how I've seen people complain about Wolverine not doing more in this show which is such a bizzare complaint. Like one, this isn't the Wolverinev show, two he hogged the limelight for 20 years so it's about time he got pushed to sidelines and three, he still got some great and badass moments in this show.
people who haven’t read the comics
I find it very satisfying seeing Wolverine pushed to the sidelines. He has been in the spotlight for literally the past 2 decades. It’s about time the actual other XMen got some attention
Especially since he is going to be in a movie later this year.

I really wish Morph and Madeline had a heart to heart. Seriously, the clone who knows they're a clone and the nonbinary shapeshifter talking about identity and who you really are practically writes itself.
Same. Morph was also a pawn of Sinister too who turned them against their loved ones at one point.
I agree my only complaint about the show is it moved so fast they couldn’t take the time to focus on anything really l.
BRO THIS is a brilliant idea they could write!!!!
Starts series as a man, recieves massive head trauma. Now thinking he's non binary. Checks out.
I loved how they handled the whole Jean vs Madeline Pryor drama
Scott should've just stuck with Maddie, problem solved.
@@AztyphThey even had Jean reprise her line of dialogue when she busted Scott and Emma, “Don’t tell me. You can explain” in the show.
When Scott jumped out of a plane and used his optic blast to land I went “LANDING STRATEGY!”
Better at it then jaune
My guy they did him more justice in five minutes lol, that first episode opened up with immediate cyclops glaze and we love it
Somebody said he been reading the comment sections and decided to redeem himself😭
My first Scott was in X-Men Evolution and admittedly the last 2 decades being not good to him, and in spite knowing that this is a sequel to the '97 series it sort of feels like seeing MY Scot again, just older :>
@@KichiMiangraX-Men Evolution had _by far_ the best portrayal of Scott and Jean to date.
@@arc7375 the voice actor doesn’t seem to like that trope either according to an article I read.
This is gonna be the year of the X-Men.

Uhmm blud read x comics the dark pheonix saga tho cool is drama, its spicy
The best part of Wolverine being slapped in the backseat, is that it’s REALISTIC. Wolverine is the Batman of the X-Men. He’s a part-timer of sorts. We’ve seen in multiple times and even saw it this season, where he takes opportunities to try leaving the X-men to just live life. He loves the X-men, but he wants to simply live life. Also, for the love of god, Nightcrawler was fucking IMMACULATE
That, and I love they went right into the Rogue/Nightcrawler sibling stuff. Cannot wait to see what they do with Mystique and Destiny in the future.

Beast Quoting Mr.Rogers had me in tears.
The people hating it are just looking for reasons to complain, kinda feel sorry for them, they can't enjoy anything without needing to bitch and moan.
Well, let’s hope that if they adapt the legacy virus, that Beast doesn’t try and sell Threnody again.

The Virgin "A wooden gun?!"
Vs the Chad "lmao eat this helicopter"
YESSSS! Thank you Sarcastic Chorus! Also Gambit is so coming back!
I was never the biggest Cyclops fan, but I’m happy to see him finally get to show off his skills as an Xman and as a family man.
Gambit doesn’t wear makeup.
Gambit does however come back to life. Don’t worry.
... this video finally made me realize that no, the reason I suddenly saw X-Men videos in my youtube feed wasn't because the internet was going through a bout of nostalgia for no reason.
You know this show is amazing when he can’t find anything wrong about it
My only complaint about it was the team selections in the final battle.
Chorus said it best, Remy is Rule of Cool incarnate.
I love how they fill every little niche. Drama, hero stuff, found family, horror (with the hallucinations and that uncomfortable dance between Mag and Rouge /j)
Not to mention that they open the books more about certain characters and their traumas like Morph and Kurt.
"The X dating pool" That was a smooth line to insert in there
I haven't been waiting week for week for a new cartoon like I did for this in ages.
It's just that good.
This show is truly incredible but if I see one more comparison to invincibles animation I will scream
3 words I'll never forget:
*Milky Way ghetto*
I have been incredibly happy with this show. TAS was the reason I woke up on Saturday mornings. I've watched it as an adult as well. Well done boys!
10/10 SEASON 1
I NEED A SEASON 2 NOW!!!
Morph in love with Wolverine is...ohh something i didnt realize in hindsight.
@@seanwilliams7655exactly honestly well said
I do agree with you.
"If i was gambit I would've blown myself up then and there"😂 bruh you ain't wrong, I had never felt so bad for a cartoon character.

Episode 5 of this show is going to be talked about for years to come..not one person I've spoken to or one reaction video online wasn't shaken to the core
Xmen 97 is one of the best revivals since Samurai Jack s5 and Enter the Florpus
The only gripe I had was the pacing in the first 4 episodes, leading up to Genosha. I wanted to see more of Magneto leading the X-Men, and we barely even got any Madelynn Prior besides her debut episode before she was killed off. That said, with that being my only gripe, everything after that flowed so naturally that the pacing even ceased to be a complaint from that point on.
Great show, loved it when I was a kid and 97 takes it to a new level.
My only complaint: Why would they put Wolverine on the team that confronts Magneto at the end? Y'all forget his bones are covered in metal? 🙄
My favorite part is how magneto seemingly forgot he could control wolverine until he torn the skeleton out.
probably becuase magneto has never almost killed a x men before so they were not expecting magento to try and kil wolverine
It’s like Cyclops said, Xavier is holding on to what should have been while being buried by it
Love the subtle shade to jjk
Omg... Sarcastic chorus doesn't complain?! Now thats new.
I LOVED ALLL OF IT! I thought giving Baston a chance was annoying but it is the Xmen way to try to help. Jean and Storm's sisterhood was my fav moments!

Because if they wouldn’t then they are hypocrites
Altough it felt great to see Magneto snap and shut Charles up with a meral strip and having Scott go off on him but still say "No infighting, we have a job to do" when the time came for everyone to work together
I can understand Rouge, not the Magneto angle but for the fact that her powers render her ability to physically feel useless with pulling a Shang Tsung. Magnus just so happened to make her feel secure, physically.
I love me some Red Queen shipping, but oblig GILF joke
Rogue and Gambit FOREVER
ROGUE AND GAMBIT FOREVER

Now, all we need is a beat em up game exactly like the one in Jubilee’s birthday episode. That would be awesome!!

Do I know anything about the X-Men? No. Am I going to watch this entire video regardless? Definitely
He came back in later episodes of season 2 and onwards

Completely agree but my only problem with it was the fast pacing of the episodes. 🤷♂️
Dear Mr. Sarcastic Chorus,
In your shipping discussion videos, have you ever thought about doing Kim Possible/Ron Stoppable? I know that one of your pet peeves is the show ending on a final kiss. With the surprise season 4, it gave the writers a chance to actually explore the teens' dynamic as a romantic couple.
My biggest problem is superhero fatigue.
People talk about movies, but 2024 animation has Invincible, X-men, Batman, Spider-man, Superman, Moon Girl AND My Hero Academia. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

This series genuinely feels like "When you vote for the jaguar eating faces and get surprised when they start eating faces"
It feels like a hot minute since you've made a zero complaint video about an animated series.
I just wished they spent one more minute on wolverine in the finale to emphasize how traumatic is injuries were
I hope they give a little more attention to Morph in the next season
