      As a former machinist, precision tools especially German and Swiss( the best) get insanely expensive. I have probably $20000 invested in tools. If you use tools everyday get the best you can afford. Preferably with a good warranty. I wrench in a bike shop now for fun and laughs. We use Park, Pedro's and Craftsmen tools. Theyre just fine!
      Avoid cheap, Chinese junk, it often needs to be modified to be functional when it's brand new and only 'works' for a short time.
      Tools are an investment. Mine save me time. Time IS money or at least time Id rather spend riding!

    I broke a spoke now what?
    LBS: just buy a new bike. We have a lot of good bikes you can put on credit.
    Reminds me how the bike mechanic at a shop I visited didn’t know what a bottom bracket was and claims they don’t come in different lengths. He highly suggested I just buy a new bike for $5k instead of a $25 bb for my chain ring to be distant from the frame.

  • @tomshield9730

    Should have headed over to the Spinergy booth to see glass spokes, well polymer fibers in glass phase. They also erroneously claim they don't stretch, but clearly they do, as you say stretch is needed to tension a wheel. Solid silica glass would make a poor spoke as any bending would easily break it, but it's still an elastic material. Could use it as fibers, but there are better choices, such as Spinergy's.

    • @parktool
      @parktool  5 лет назад

      We have a few sets of Spinergy wheels here actually. Pretty nifty.

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 Год назад

      Unless you're racing, proprietary junk makes very little sense. Neither does 'reinvention of the wheel'. Bicycles 'should be' simple, reliable, affordable machinery. That's what the vast majority of consumers actually 'need'.
      Most of this new fangled proprietary junk is more difficult to repair, more expensive or requires special tools. Most real world, experienced and practical wheel builders and mechanics know this. We have dozens of bikes sitting unridden in the shop WAITING a week or more for ALL SORTS of proprietary junk available from only one source.
      People complain about the wait, so my advice is: " buy another bike today, then you can ride today!" It's a great means to sell more bikes in this neighborhood, believe it or not!
      When you break a spoke, sometimes you're traveling far and wide. Broken proprietary junk potentially ruins a big event unless you planned for the worst.
      The best thing to do is use ONLY J bend stainless spokes that any decent shop stocks around the world. Many good shops can cut and thread a j bend spoke to the correct length for you.
