At the risk of sounding like a broken record, a Monstera "branch" in a jug or vase is a super low maintenance shot of greenery. It will live forever and only need water added monthly or so. Once it grows roots, if you want to, you can pot it up as a gift, then start a new branch.

First, the monstera cutting must have a node in order to root. If it's just a cutting, it may last 4 to 6 weeks, tops. Just sharing from experience.

I can vouch for the difference that painting the ceiling can make. We scraped the popcorn, prepped and repainted and I was blown away by the difference. A flat ceiling reflects SO much more light than a popcorn ceiling. The room looks bigger, cleaner and brighter!

With the house I bought, I bought a well-preserved, high-quality kitchen with a great marble floor, tiles and countertops. The arrangement of the furniture and electrical installations were perfect, but the dark oak look didn’t suite my taste. I had the fronts painted a new matte color by an auto body shop as I wanted a perfect finish with a suitable permanent color. It wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. We replaced the lighting, fittings and handles.
Not only did we save a lot of money, but with a little creativity we also conserved resources.
Well this sounds delightful! Who doesn't need inexpensive ideas to update their home?!

@@LisaHoltDesign Fantastic! I'm soon doing a closet makeover. Rather than one long, cramped closet across the back of the bedroom, my contractors will make that space into two closets to the ceiling that face one another, with a doorway size opening between them so that a sliding pocket French door can be added for access to a balcony to be built off the back of the bedroom that overlooks the back yard. The two new closets facing one another will go to the ceiling where there is now wasted space like there is above kitchen cabinets that don't go to the ceiling, but even more space than that. The upper part of the new closets will have pull down mechanisms for bringing down to a reachable level more light weight items, like tops. Shoe shelves will go in between the two levels of hanging clothes. My favorite part of the design concept will be the sliding beveled mirror doors that, which when fully open, will form a two- part mirror over the back wall of the house behind which will ultimately be the sliding pocker door out. So, either open or closed, those mirrored doors can be used to see if that cute outfit looks as good on as I hoped it might.
With the linen change out, don't forget the potholders! I saw a video not long ago of my adult son as a baby in our old house, and the potholder hanging on the wall was the same one I was still using! My son got me new potholders for Mother's Day that year. :-)

I love that you mentioned Ruggable. So many designers turn their noses up at this brand. I have one in my entrance way and I love it. So easy to maintain.
I have an eat-in kitchen in my apartment. I put up Andy Warhol posters in frames, along with a Magritte cloud in a coupe glass and Vincent's self portrait. ART THAT YOU LOVE to me makes the space fun and fab!

I totally agree! I dont think enough people realize what a difference paint alone can make! I have an open floor plan house, and my kitchen and dining room is seen in the open right when people walk in my house. My walls are light and airy. I had those hideous honey oak cabinets that I painted white last year. Thankfully the cabinet doors are not outdated so I could paint them. I have a dark brown & dark gray kitchen backsplash, and I have the hideous brown laminate countertops. I finally broke down this week and painted my very expensive brown tile with 123 Bullseye Primer and Benjamin Moores Simply White in high gloss. I do not regret it one bit! A huge difference! I ordered the peel and stick for the countertops today, and I am skeptical about it, but I do want to try it and see if I can live with it for a year until I can replace the counters. I would love to show you before and after pictures. My kitchen is looking so much better, and Im excited!
I had a limited kitchen budget and you can save a ton of money if you can do some things yourself. I made new doors for the cabinets, and since one of my skills is as a stained glass artist, I made stained glass inserts for each of the upper cabinet doors, and the doors framed the glass. It took me about 3 months to do it, but I loved the result. That way I could throw most of my budget into a granite counter top which would have never been possible if I had to buy new doors. I probably saved myself several thousand in doing things myself. I also took down the old back splash and replaced it...but that is not for someone that doesn't know how to sheetrock. I ended up having to redo a lot of damaged sheetrock. You never know what you are going to find behind things like that. All in all I got it all done in 6 months with the granite being the last thing.
Scott I was thinking of going that to my cabinet tops too but am still undecided. I bet yours look great snd yes you can save a ton of money if you can do things yourself. I saved 600 dollars by doing the floor myself not yo mention backsplash.
@@homerwiggins3965 If you decide to build your own cabinets...a couple of words of advice. If you dont have a router or a router table (I got an assembly required table for 100 bucks), you will need one as it will make the job so much easier, and also you will want to use 1/2" bits for the inserts (they sell special bit sets just for that and buy the good ones as they will last) if you are going to paint the frames you can use mdf or oak. Just know MDF will make a huge mess and you have to use the right kinds of finishes. I'd say go for it if you have the time. I'm glad I did, and it gave me something that was exactly what I wanted, and I know it is one of a kind.

Great ideas Lisa! I've found that the number one best refresh is throughly clean and declutter. Wash those walls, cabinets, ceilings, shine up the appliances. Makes such a difference and is cheap, cheap, cheap.

*That's Fantastic* . Hey Lisa, I just finished my 2022 Spring Re-Fresh using the 80-60-20 ratio in my main living spaces. Textiles and greenery are my favorite "go-to". My Kitchen update included marrying my Living and Dining Room to my color palette. Rug, valance, new decorative towels, apron and pot holders... a $40 upgrade. great tips! i recently painted my cabinets and found black fleur de lis cabinet pulls that i am ecstatic about! got rid of old ceiling light and replaced with flush mount round LEDs. made such a difference!

I found that thinking through the plan is the most time-consuming part of the process. The actual installs have been done in a snap compared to that. I have excellent contractors that get things done in very short order, but it did take quite a bit of time to find them.

We are starting from scratch since we are building and the kitchen is basically done, but I’m glad to see we managed to do many of the things you talked about - interesting sink faucet, cabinet pulls, flooring we love (the same bamboo that’s in the rest of the house), and a mostly black granite that is cohesive with all the matte black hardware. What I’d really love, if you have ideas about this, is a budget-friendly take on closets. We have three bedroom closets and a pantry we are trying to figure out how to outfit. Love your ideas and your energy, Lisa!

Absolutely! Cutting board decor, plant decor, and linen decor. I've hung olive wood cutting boards, added one plant only to the window sill so as not to block my fabulous new view, and super cute hanging black and white checked oven mitts. Thank you for the confirmations, Lisa!

I need those LED light pucks under the kitchen cabinets, and yes we still have the lovely flurescent lighting bulbs above which should be replaced by summer with a flat ceiling led b/c our kitchen is OLD. Thank you for these tips b/c they are good reminders of what we can do.

Loved all the ideas, Lisa! We just recently rebuilt our kitchen after water damage (ceiling fell down). I found some wonderful cabinets through Lowes by Valleywood made of Birch wood and painted with Sherwin Williams Pure White (they came painted you just need to assemble) for a great price to put in our kitchen. So many prefabs are particle board and wrapped (which will peel off in no time). Maybe this can help someone! They do go on sale from time to time. Our contractor wanted 15,000-25,000. to build them, but so glad I found Valleywood!
My kitchen has an exposed-lumber ceiling. The planks and beams still had they’re original lumberyard blue stamps on them, but had also become very dirty. So, I had it primed and painted white and it made such a tremendous difference! It makes the whole room look light and bright, and now it’s a beautiful feature, instead of a 70s temporary ceiling. It did take two coats of primer (a shellac one to block out the ink, then Z-Prime) and multiple coats of paint, but was well worth it. It’s also highly cleanable now, no more dirty ceiling.

People so often neglect under-cabinet lighting, don't they? Oh my goodness, so often we let the lighting in the stove hood go or not replace it appropriately. Your color tips are superb. Never saw the ombre faucets before, so that's a find for me. Forgotten greenery and linens. Thanks for the really helpful checklist of what to look at and then how to get it all refreshed.
Wish has Peel and stick papers in a huge variety of colors and designs for really good price and it really sticks to the surface. I've stuck some to a shelf and unless you get something to steam it off the paper is stuck to the surface. I tried the stainless steel and it looks great.
My home is new so I approached my kitchen with an eye on
Transitional style. Fresh and new is what I have now. My walls are a very pale gray (SW City Loft) and the ceiling is SW Ceiling White. The backsplash is a light greige, 4 x4 tiles with no grout so it looks like a continuous sheet. Cream cabinets suit my transitional style; brushed nickel bar style hardware. So far so good.

you forgot one thing...I had a friend stencil her backsplash and it has lasted her for over 7 yrs +...It 's beautiful...so...I had her do mine and it is amazing ...Stencil is the alternative to pricey backsplash...and works great after a few coats of polyurethane/ water base.....
My kitchen ceiling is all lighting. First thing I did was change to led lights daylight so it is bright. Bright white Behr paint on walls & cabinets. White 3x12 subway tile stacked. Just drove to Ikea Las Vegas from Arizona to get my last counter tops due to supply chain issues. 2 cabinets are open with dish rack I made & one has my tea pot collection

I inherited my parents home, it has now older custom cupboards that my Mom had refaced with new doors in the mid 1990. , so I am thinking of having the cupboards painted professionally because I would prefer they be sprayed , I have a older expensive German Stainless sink with a newer faucet that my plumber installed after he re-plumbed the house 4 years ago and redid a bathroom. I'm thinking white cupboards and new not busy counters ( my formica which is about 36 years old is still in good shape), and whatever i do the counters in will be the matching backsplash

I did budget refreshes to my kitchen about 10 years ago (painted the cabinets, applied faux granite paint to the ugly laminate countertops, and added hardware to the cabinets). I'm ready for another refresh now but will be spending a bit more this go round. Planning to remove the popcorn ceiling, add new cabinets and new countertop. That being said, I'm still trying to stay on the lower end of all these items.

~If your windows have a blah view or are too glary, cover them with static cling film. You can get all sorts of stained glass or modern patterns, but I love the abstract rainbow one...it actually refracts light & fills your room with rainbows. It's cheap from Aliexpress etc, (about AUD$15 to cover a whole door) & sticks with a little soapy water mist. Reusable, replaceable, no glue or residue. It stops your neighbours from perving, & looks great on mirrors that are placed a little too confrontingly in the bathroom, too. At night, when your lights are on, it's a reverse rainbow from outside...all dark greens, purples & blues like a peacock. It's fairly stunning.
~For an endlessly re-vampable backsplash, mount a pane of tempered glass with decorative clips or a removable frame, & put whatever flat thing you like behind it. (Kids art, photo, print, collage, memorabilia, funky fabric, leaves/ferns/pressed flowers, album covers, pride flags, team colours......) You can change looks whenever you want, & it wipes clean. :-) stops your neighbours from perving.
Great rugs that last forever and go in the washing machine, are the round ones you can make from strips of old fabric, or op-shop sheets & doona covers. You use a blunted very large darning needle to thread the strips in a coil using blanket stitch with the actual fabric, endlessly hemming the outer edge with the blanket stitched fabric strip going through the loops of the previous row. You need to add an extra stitch here & there to make it flat (unless you want a basket). They are great, & reversible, so if unexpected company comes over you can dash around & flip them over to clean side up!!! We painted our cabinet boxes, removed popcorn, and added new shaker doors, adding 4 with bubbled glass. We added new lighting and wallpapered the interior of the glass ones, fabric to match the wallpaper to cover our swivel island stools.
Our new kitchen is white with navy island. Wall is white wainscoting with navy upper and white crown molding. Love the new look.

My strategy has always been to do the expensive basics first (floors, counters, basic cupboards) and then consider the cream on top.
This strategy does require you to be willing to live w chaos in the meantime, and doesn’t take renting into account
Great strategy 😊! I’ve slowly been learning the hard way that spending the majority of the budget on aesthetically pleasing, but truthfully rather unnecessary items, is not the way to go lol

I like your kitchen on a BUDGET!!!!
I'm pretty happy with my paint, my cabinets, my faucet, my linens, my lighting, even my rug... Plants are always a struggle, lol. What you have made me realize is that it's time to replace my linoleum flooring. It's ancient and shows it. And my kitchen is small, so really it should not be too expensive. Any tips on picking out good linoleum and/or making sure it is installed properly? (I know linoleum is not too classy, but I like that it provides a solid moisture barrier for the kitchen floor.)

My barndominium is a small space, and one thing I’ve learned from your videos, I want appliance panels. I’m planning on splurging on the things I really want because the kitchen is going to be so small that it won’t be too expensive 😄

I want to ad an budget-friendly backsplash tipp: You can paint your old tiles.
And a penny- solution I did in my bathroom (the people living here before me, were not very into grout cleaning.. so i found a grout-pencil.. this thing is a wonder! It 2,50 and it makes litaraly black and dark brown grouts white again.
(unfortunatly i found it after years trying with toothbrushes and all that stuff to clean them)

I know this SHOULD be such a no-brainer that it need not be mentioned in a video, but for veneer cabinets whose only sin is that they appear old and tired, a good washing might be enough restore their original freshness. Get in all the little corners really well. I washed all of mine, and I swear they're two shades lighter - and I don't even smoke in the house! LOL!

I know the push in lighting is warmer but remember an elderly persons vision becomes yellower as you age and affects clarity of vision bear that in mind

Hi Lisa! Lovely ideas as ever! Re kitchen cupboard doors: if they are good solid wood could I strip them and lighten the wood and maybe seal them by varnishing them? Or will this message send you off into a darkened room to recover? Best wishes!
Yes, solid wood cabinet doors are much less common, but more valuable. You could absolutely strip them lighten them up and then seal them with a matte finish👍🏻🙌🏼🥰

Great video as always! Any tips for solid wood cabinets hand built in the 1950’s that are in great condition but darken the kitchen? I’m scared to paint them because my dad may haunt me.
You can paint them. I’ve painted two kitchens , both times over wood finished cabinets. There is a product called “ No Sand” that you can wipe on the cabinets, leave on for a period of time ( maybe 5-10 minutes?), and then go back and wipe off. It cleans and de-glosses the finish so the cabinets will be able to be painted. Lots of people sand their cabinets but that is so time consuming and messy. I think I bought that product at Sherwin Williams. That was at least 20 years ago, so there probably are others out there, made by other paint company’s . If you clean and feel-gloss well, you will get a nice finish. I’d use a coat of primer, and then 2 coats of paint. Best of luck!
If you don't want to paint them sand them down and restain or revarnish them. Over a decade ago we renovated my in laws house and I did not like the kitchen, it was big but very dated. The cupboards were solid wood, expensive wood and I was told that I was not allowed to paint them. So I had all the old glossy orange toned varnish removed and I sanded them put a clear matte finish on them. New hardware and handles made them look better. We also ripped out the wall and floor tiles and we changed the sink and faucet and used huge tiles for the countertop. We did pretty much all of the work ourselves as we found some serious structural damage that ate up the budget.
Painting your cabinets is a great DIY project. However, it requires a lot of prep work. Cleaning the grease off, sanding, filling in the holes that held the hinges, more sanding, filling any other imperfections or filling the wood if it's open-grained, and finally, more sanding. Using a quality primer (front and back) is a must and I use a minimum of two coats of Cabinet Grade semi-gloss paint on the front and one coat of the same paint on the backs. Most folks aren't aware that there is a tintable cabinet grade of paint available at home depot and Dunn Edwards. It's formulated to withstand everyday knocks and won't stick to itself. And while you're at it, replace all the hinges with new ones. Finally, change or add pulls and knobs. Here's a tip guys, knobs and pulls are the cabinet's jewelry, you wouldn't dare pick out a wedding ring without consulting your significant other... do the same here. Cheers.
