  • In this video, I am preparing my new Dell PowerEdge R620 for my hypervisor. I access the device via the IDRAC7 controller and put the hard drives into a RAID5 configuration. This is for my home lab that will be running ESXI 6.7 with different network virtualization programs like EVE-NG and GNS3.

I just recently bought a dell r420 PowerEdge. As I wait for it to arrive I have been binge-watching what to do with it and ultimately how to set it up (as it's my first server). I cannot tell you how this 13:57 long video was more helpful than all the hours of other content I have watched. I cannot wait for the server to arrive, thanks, Aaron!! (you just gained another subscriber)

Hey I purchased the same server last year from eBay with 128gb of ram, which I still have not configure yet. This video will help me do just that. THANK YOU.

Hey great video! I have a R610 on its way and I’m watching videos like yours to prep my initializing before it arrives.
That said, your the first person I’ve seen install your main OS on a thumb stick internally. Have you had any issues running it like that? Cause I would rather go that direction if it’s not to sketch to be running the main OS via a usb slot on a flash drive

Thanks man, I just got the remote access established. I bought the server awhile ago but never got it up and running (didn't put a lot of effort to be honest) but now that I'm moving it feels good. I did however insert two SSDs drives and I'm pretty sure they made a connection, but no Physical Drives are showing up yet ;?

Okay I got the SSD to show (one at least) think it just needed to be pushed in further. However, when I go to run the virtual console, no luck. A file downloads and I found it I need to shorten the file name to just have the extension .jnlp at the end, but when I go to launch I get the error "unable to locate a Runtime Java"

And there is another of those who throws the server in living room and goes to his bedroom to set it up with his obs and idrac and all the sweets, i prefer a lot configuring the server on the server itself from a keyboard and monitor connected. I hope you wouldnt remove the usb ad go to the bedroom to press enter and wait when you could do it on the server keyboard.

    Hi,
I plugged the main cable into my switch as well as 2 other cables(one going directly from switch -> idrac and the switch -> NIC1). I am trying to setup DHCP but it consistently comes back as 0.0.0.0
I was finally able to get something going and remotely access it through my desktop but when I go to update the firmware it prompts me to setup my network settings. When I get to the network settings it has NIC1 selected and no configuration..then I switch it to DHCP and nothing appears.
Based on a few tutorials I have watched, the ip address properties should've appeared.
Any idea(s) as to what may be the problem?

Silly question but does the switch have VLANs? And a DHCP server on the same subnet/vlan?

      @@AaronEngineered I'm honestly not sure :\
I'm trying to shift from a support position to a jr sys admin role but have little to no network/serv experience.

@@crazyman606202 if your pc is also plugged into the switch, use the screen on the front to change the IP to the same subnet as the pc you are using

Best part is that you can get to the server without the power on!

Do you have multiple servers? is there a way to stack them and make one logical server? that would be nice.. asking for a friend..
