    Let's get rolling. The Dell PowerEdge R620 supports three types of drives: Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS), Serial ATA (SATA) and Solid State Drives (SSD). SAS drives have speeds of 10K to 15K RPM. SATA drives operate at speeds of 7.2K RPM. SSDs can run at speeds 3GB/s or 6GB/s. All chassis options for the R620 accept 2.5” drives. There is no option to use 3.5” drives. For SAS, the max capacity per drive that you can install is 2.4TB. For SATA, the max capacity per drive that is supported is 2TB. Lastly, for SSDs, the max capacity per drive you can install is 7.68TB. These capacities are the largest we’ve been able to use while testing the R620. If you’ve been able to put in larger capacities, let us know in the comments below!
    We will also show you how to install a new drive into your R620. Installing drives into your system is very easy since the drives are hot swap, meaning you can install a drive while the server is running. We will also go over how to test your drives with Dell Diagnostics and HD Sentinel. Dell Diagnostics will test more than just the drives, but we will utilize this test to make sure our drives are performing well. Dell will provide an amber light for predictive failure. This is very common on 15K SAS drives because their bearings wear out over time. HD Sentinel is great for checking the Health Scores and Power On Hours for drives.

    I usually test with a program called partition wizard when you can do a surface test of the disks, manage partition and stuff like that. Hd sentinel is also a good program

      How did you do that? Are they installed inside?

    • @rickiv7133
      @rickiv7133 Год назад

      @@Eric-is6pr no, I used sata extension cables. They're connected in the front bays but are just outside the server on a shelf.

    i picked up a 5tb sata hdd that I'm currently running my media server on - though I am looking for some good drives to populate the other bays and mirror the container over to so I'm not stressing the thought of drive failure lol

    Is it possible to hook up GPUs (like AMD Radeon 6600s) using PCIe riser? I dont mind it does not have room for bigger GPU. I can just open up the cover. It seems like having huge PSU

    Is there any way to fit 3.5 inch drives in this server?

      Unfortunately not

      Not directly in the unit, however there are SATA extension cables that I used on mine. I 3d printed some caddies that rest on top of the server

    Hey, I've purchased an used R620, but it has SAS drives. How would I go about switching it so it can accept SATA ones instead? It has the PERC H710 RAID controller. Thanks!

      It's a simple swap. Just add in your SATA and remove the SAS. Now if there is information on the drives, then that's a whole different story.

      Thanks!!! I did not know that it was the same backplane. Its good to know since SAS drives are hard to come by.

    what SSD drive will work, and are you talking about replacing the DVD with a SSD or the RAID Array with SSDs? I swapped out my R620 with a drive caddy and a 230GB SSD and installed Server 2016 trial and it's so fast. How many SSD's can i put in the array and what drives also can the drives see over 2TB each? I have a 4bay and would like to do a raid 5 of 6TB's total SSD is that possible?

      What drives did you use? I just tried some PNY from Amazon and the H710P wouldn't recognize them
