Yamaha XT250 Oil Change

- This is an oil change for my 2018 Yamaha XT250. I choose to change my oil every 1200-1600 miles.
Always use a certified oil and correct amount. A good standard is to have the oil level in the middle of the sight glass. NEVER overfill an engine with oil.
Oil quantity:
1.2L if the changing the oil ONLY and not the filter
1.3L when changing both the oil AND the filter
Oil: Yamalube Full Synthetic 15w50
Oil Filter: Yamaha Brand
Part # 5D3-13440-09-00
Thanks for making a quick and simple video. Didn’t need to talk about random bs for 12 minutes, just got to the point. 5 stars
Thanks for the feedback and a simple video is exactly what I was going for. My next video will be an oil change for the wife's TW200 which will be done the same way. The only thing I may change is doing a voiceover instead of captions but we'll see what happens.
@el_mapache_blanco You mean you didn't want to hear me talk about which side of the bed I slept on, what I had for breakfast, or what kind of mood my dog was in??? 😂 I hate that too. I also can't stand most clickbait titles or thumbnail photos that flood YT these days🙄
thanks for just doing it and not ranting about some bs
Good video, but I would like to have seen you place the new filter in its position before you installed the assembly.
Great video
Perfect video. Thanks.
The engine case says 1200cc that works out to 42 ounces. (conversion chart cc to oz) Or 1 quart and 10 ounces. Also would have been nice if you mentioned what size socket for the drain plug, and what size allen for the oil filter cover.
Good, concise video. It looks like you have some after-market goodies on your XT. Wouldn't mind seeing a video on those - especially stuff up by the handle bars. I just purchased and I'm looking for quick, helpful mods.
Thank you for watching, and I'm sorry for the late response.
I highly recommend making changes to the suspension. A lot of Japanese motorcycles come to the US with a suspension that is under spring for the weight of an average US rider. I installed an Eibach spring on the rear shock, and new springs in the front fork tubes with Cogent DDC valves. Cogent makes very good suspension, and I have their stuff in my DR650; great customer service also.
My handlebars are ProTaper handlebars with the Carmichael bend, which I'm a fan of. I have the same bend on my DR650. I put Bark Buster VPS handguards on the XT250.
Other than that, I didn't do a whole lot to the XT. I highly recommend changing the suspension to accommodate your weight though. It can completely change the way a bike feels on and offroad which is something you feel all the time. It doesn't make the bike look cooler, but I promise a better suspension is worth while.
Check out Procycle.us They are a great place to get parts for dualsport motorcycles and I've been doing business with them for years. They usually have a good sale for Black Friday, which is a good time to buy suspension parts and anything else you might need.
good job
Thanks!
Best one yet keen for more!
Thanks!
Excellent tutorial 👌.
Thank you!
Hello and great video. I just bought a 2010 XT250 and about to change the oil and do maintenance. On the clutch side of the bike there’s a cover with the Yamaha name on it, does this hold back any fluid? I need to replace it but not sure if fluid will spill out if I take it off.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad it was helpful!
When you say clutch side are you talking about the side of the bike with the gear shift lever and clutch lever on the handlebar? If so I think you are talking about a small round cover that gives some access to the starter gear. That won't affect the oil change. I've never taken mine off but I think there could be a small amount of oil in there if you remove that cover. Behind that cover is where they started gear interfaces with some sort of ring gear to turn the bike over.
Juste assez long. Good job.
Why did you choose 15w50?
We were in a hot climate, Arizona. There was no need for 10 weights, and I like the little extra weight for shear stability in a hot climate, especially for a shared sump engine/trans combination. Our XT250 and TW200 ran great on 15w50 in hot weather. I would use 10W40 in cooler/cold months.
@@curiousambitions9331 OK yea thanks! I am in PA so I think I'll use 15w50 now, and change it again before the cold months to 10w40. Since it is brand new I'll get a couple of changes in and ride it a lot this year.
Good plan! I went to school in PA and live in Virginia now. It can get plenty hot in both states, so 15w50 will be fine. My 4Runner calls for 5w30 but use 10w30 with no issues. I might switch to 5w30 for the winter oil change. Researching oil can be a dangerous rabbit hole to go down 👍
I'll also say I like Yamalube oil in my bikes or Mobil 1 4T 10w40. I have Amsoil metric oil in my DR650 now and it is not working well at all. It is really hard to shift in all gears, and it was never like that with Mobil 1 T4. I'm going to dump the Amsoil and put Mobil back in. Some wet clutch bikes can be picky and not react well to certain oils. It doesn't mean the oil is bad, just that maybe a certain additive isn't working well with the clutch.
@@scottk.8494 yea thats why I chose to use yamalube synthetic because I know lubes make a big difference but yea I like to keep it pretty simple. People can go overboard
The manual says 1.3 quarts not sure how that translates to ounces
Correct. That's 1 full quart with an additional 9.6 ounces of oil but that's also when changing the filter. If you're changing the oil only then it's only 1.1 to 1.2 quartz of oil. I usually use a measuring cup for those additional ounces. The difference between a liter and a quart is so small it doesn't really matter but it's still very important not to overfill the crankcase.
Your bike looks pretty clean; are you ever going to ride it? 🤣
I washed it before the oil change 😁! Both the XT and TW hadn't been washed since October.
