When you said "You lose out on building Uber with the Boston Basher" I realized I should point out the fact that you CAN self-damage yourself with the Wrap Assassin (even if it isn't much). Also, now I feel vindicated in completing a Specialized Killstreak WA Kit.
Here's the thing: Only competent Medics heal 9 out of the 9 classes when they actually need to be healed. And they are rarer than Spy Crabs and Heavy mains. Most Medic players you come across only heal Heavies, Soldiers, sometimes Demomen and Demoknights, and the occasional Phlogistinator Pyro. They never heal Scouts even if they equip the Boston Basher. So if anything, The Boston Basher IS NOT the best in slot pick everyone else says when your Medic is a girl who simps for her Soldier boyfriend 24/7 or a battle Medic who attacks with his Syringe Guns like an idiot.
The wrap assassin's reputation is mostly due to existance of sandman. But after Sandman was made completely useless, There really is no reason for that reputation anymore.
Well they said sandman was good and Valve nerfed it. Obviously to stop the wrap assassin being treated as badly you need to say it's bad just to keep it good.
The wrap assassin back in the day had the same recharge time as the sandman, which was about 15 seconds iirc, meaning even less reason to use it. Now, with the rng damage buff, 25% faster recharge, and even the sandman itself getting a shorter charge which ALSO affects the wrap assassin. It's wayyyy better than it was before
"Why the hell would you want to run in with your melee as Scout?" To fish'em Milk+Fish is surprisingly good, people usually just scream in confusion while you creamy fish them
any competent player can deal with that. just because a gimmick can work doesn't always mean it's viable. fists of steel+steak can get some kills but it doesn't make steak good.
This is a pattern I've seen for a while, but the Wrap Assassin is the 2nd (or third) best melee for scout. There's a reason why flank scouts in 6s use it when they're not using the Basher (all the reasons you listed lol). If you're in casual, the best melee is the Atomizer with the second being the Wrap Assassin (same for Highlander). If you're in 6s, the best is the Basher (uber building) and the second is this (especially in 5CP) or the Atomizer. There are quite a few good weapons in TF2 that casual players seem to think are garbage, when they're actually good, but mostly just because they exist in the shadow of another stronger (or more widely used) weapon.
@@donaldmacisaac8479 its actually unbanned now, it was banned before be it used to damaged you when you triple jumped making it a more useful boston basher, its now a mobility tool these days
Fun fact, the cleaver and wrap assassin's bleeds actually stack because they deal separate damage types. I'd personally prefer using either the cleaver OR the WA and save the leftover slot for a different weapon, but it's certainly a decent option to run a combo scout of sorts using both.
I mean, even if you aren’t getting the long-range crits, connecting with both the ball and cleaver can still kill a light class if they don’t stop the bleeding.
It's worth mentioning that since it is a melee weapon, the bauble and guillotine bleed effects stack on each other, giving anyone unlucky enough a brutal -8 dps ticker. Edit: actually its 16 dps!
Honestly, using the Wrap Assassin and Guillotine for the standard ranged flava can be improved if you have the Shortstop! Along with that devastating 8 ticks of damage, you can pepper your enemy as they flee from the battle.
Make it double. -16 dps ticker. The wrap assassin and the cleaver deal -4 damage every HALF a second. Add them up, multiply it by two, and you've got a ranged cancer cannon. That sounded way worse in execution.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the bauble also stuffs invis ( and I think the dead ringer if it's the bauble that triggers the dead ringer and not the bleed ) because of the dust that surrounds the spy on a hit. I've definitely ruined a lot spy's getaways just because of that, and that's what also makes it a very strong weapon
I always used the Wrap Assassin ever since the Sandman got nerfed into the ground. Combined with the Cleaver and the Force-a-Nature makes killing light classes real easy.
8:12 this is even funnier when you take into account that the cleaver is banned on comp 6s while the wrap assasin isnt, due being a weaker, less spammable version of the cleaver
Wow, I kinda hate comp games for this reason of constantly deleting things from games, but the fact that my favorite scout weapon is still there brings me sadistic joy.
@@keithbrannon251 it's the sad consequence of comp tf2 being fundamentaly different from pubs That doesn't mean it's a bad mode, far from it, is just that obviously using a weapon designed with 24 players in mind in a mode with only 12 or 18 players is gonna make them super busted. And even then, it's not like the comp community WANTS to ban weapons, in an ideal world every weapon that isn't busted on a technical level would be allowed, but I don't want to get into competitive balancing discussion as that's a touchy subject that Fish has already talked about pretty nicely
The Wrap Assassin is a nostalgic unlock for me. I remember it being my first Melee unlock for Scout when I was 13. I caught on quick that Scout wasn't very strong at long ranges, so I'd always use it. I had a combo with the Mad Milk I called the "Christmas Vampire" where I'd gain back about a third of my health or so using the Milk + Ball.
3:40 A quick note that this screen/the commentary is wrong. It has a damage penalty of 65%, NOT 35%. I get how you could mess that up, since the damage penalty leads to The Wrap Assassin dealing 35% of the bat's damage. It doesn't really matter since you shouldn't be swinging the wrapping paper anyways, but its just a quick nitpick since it bugged me.
Finally people are starting to realize this is a very good item. I think most people see the "-65% damage penalty" and immediately label it as trash despite the fact that you're never supposed to hit anyone with it in the first place.
I would argue that even a new player would realize that Scout's melee is trash. More than likely, the people who label the Wrap Assassin as trash don't realize how much of a difference the weapon makes. Doubly so if they aren't good at the game, since they'll usually miss, and when they actually hit all they see is a 20. They don't see the bleed, they don't see the difference it made, all they see is that number and think "trash". They want to see big numbers because they don't need a deep understanding of the game to understand that, and the Wrap Assassin doesn't do that.
Honestly I really enjoy your "In Defense" series, and it's probably my favourite part of your content. It's just as if not more interesting than Bad Weapon Academy, an multitudes more applicable to other media like you started with the Doom Eternal episode in BWA. It can easily be applied to other game's balance, games as a whole, shows/movies, characters, and sky is the limit. It's a broader subject with a name and formula that can adapt easily. I really hope to see it more in the future, especially spreading into other interests of yours
This is genuinely what I've been thinking for so long! I've seen so much shit thrown at the wrap assassin and for what? less melee damage for an already useless slot for scout? The only RUclipsr (besides you) I've seen give it the love it deserves is Brick lol
It's exactly what fish points out, for years everyone based their opinion of every item/cosmetic on what soundsmith has said. It's the same reason why people thought the amby was somehow bad after jungle inferno.
Now that the maps have been fixed and I can freely use the Wrap Assassin everywhere, it's become one of my favorite melees again. It's a guaranteed +50 damage on a target if you hit them with the one quick-replenishing projectile, and it's really easy to land in my opinion. One meatshot and that bauble kills most classes, maybe needing one wrapping paper hit if it's a close quarters battle. And let's all be real, they destroyed the Sandman and it is now useless. And the Sandman + Cleaver combo was very powerful but easy to nerf by decreasing the stun ability of the Sandman, not completely removing it.
the thing is: how can you reduce literally taking your weapons away? reducing your aim? making you shoot slower? I'm not sure what they should have done.
@@maestrofeli4259 I think they should have certainly at least reduced the time it stuns and heightened the distance/hit registration required to ensure that stun. But let's be real, Moon Shots were amazing, even though they do leave you stunned for too long.
Honestly I think the Wrap Assassin could even use a nerf, but that's a part of a larger issue of stock melees being shit. As for the Sandman, maybe make it reduce the hit enemy's firing and reload speed? I think that's a good advantage in fights that isn't too frustrating to get hit by.
When playing TF2 I always had trouble hitting my balls, no matter what I did I never managed to hit my balls. Until one day I got into a good rhythm, and now I always hit my balls, and it feels so good. Also the Wrap Assassin is pretty neat too i guess.
The wrap assassin is the best combat melee, I wouldn’t even call it a melee in the first place. It is basically another secondary, it works very well with tings such as bonk atomic punch, crit a cola, and the mad milk because it makes up for the lack of a secondary with, well, another secondary. Although the atomizer is great for its utility (Along with the boston basher sometimes), the wrap assassin is probably the best combat melee. Edit: Even if you are using a damaging secondary (Especially the winger), it makes those stronger.
Seriously, I don't understand how people can't see this. It's free extra ranged damage as long as you hit the ball. It's so spammable you can basically toss it at whichever enemy you choose to fight, giving you an added edge for zero downside. Even if you miss you haven't lost much except a very small amount of time you could have been shooting your shotgun or pistol.
I have literally never heard anyone, ever, say the Wrap Assassin is anything less than top tier. Some people say that the Boston Basher is better (probably because they see it used in 6s and assume it must be the best?) but I don't see it.
@@Acidicheartburn As scout you don't want to shoot enemies until you close the distance anyways since you will trade alerting the enemy and getting the jump on them for like 15 damage with your pistol or scattergun which is not worth it. The baubles travel time negates this as by the time they react to the bauble you are already right behind them and pumping them full. So saying the wrap assassin has a downside of taking time before a fight to get damage in really doesn't even apply! I really love this weapon!
The thing is, being the cheeky flanking class scout is, there are just several more useful utilities that other bats provide (maybe not the bat lol). Atomizer allows you to go for riskier sniper picks/out maneuver a heavy. Sandman allows you to better duel other flanking classes or high mobility classes. The boston basher for christ sake can get ubers out lol. The fan is a very good utility in MVM (ok maybe the assassin is better than the fan). Regardless, there are so many more things you can do with other bats that award more playstyles, whereas the wrap assassin is just... kinda annoying. Scouts can twoshot/three shot 90% of the classes in tf2 by very quickly unloading his scattergun, so that 10 second delay slow damage buildup just isnt as effective when entire duels/fights dont even last as long. Its not a bad bat, but its also not as gamechanging than some of scout's other melees.

ive been a stan of the wrapped assassin for years. A class thats already loaded up with so much close range damage a mele with some ranged damage to harass or finish off running enemies has always been fun to me
I seriously never knew people thought the weapon was that bad and I can't understand why. Hitting a ball deals more damage than a hit from the stock bat and you can do it at a range where Scout is normally lacking, even giving incentive to do so with the crit thing (which I didn't know about either why does this game have so many unlisted stats). I barely see any serious player actually try using a regular melee attack with Scout except maybe with the Boston Basher so why would it matter with the Wrap Assassin. Even before the bug was patched it still was one of my main melee options up there with the Atomizer. It's pretty much a free upside since the downsides of having slower access to a melee attack or having a weaker one is meaningless on a class with 6 shotgun shots more than capable of dodging or running out and in again while reloading one more if needed.
Stats in the game are unlisted so players have things to discover, learn & master from playing the game. Unfortunately, some of these things are hidden too well.
Tbh, ever since you first mentioned this thing (can't remember when though), I've been using it on every Scout loadout. Figured "why not try it out?". And I've loved it ever since, along with the Scottish Resistance. So thank you Fish, thank you for paying attention to the Wrap Assassin, along with every other weapon you talk about.
So, I want to know if these “In Defense of” videos are gonna become a series like BWA, though not to the same extent. If so, which weapon do you think you’ll want to do next?
The reason it's good is pretty simple. The thing most scouts won't do (normal melee attacks) is worse but you get a ranged DOT. (which also stacks with the other ranged DOT scout has) Kind of don't see how it's seen as a bad weapon when it's only downside is for something you wouldn't be doing anyway.
I have hit a lot of balls indeed (do not take that out of context) but I just dont think a ball that does bleed damage is better than a uber building/min-critting melee. Just my thought.

Soundsmith complaining about how “bad” the wrap assassin is while trying to hit someone with the tube is so funny to me. Like yeah no shit that’s not gonna do much- that’s not what it’s for
exactly, scout is a close-midranged class which relies on big damage meatshots. not fucking whacking your enemy to DEATH WITH YOUR 3 DAMAGE MELEE. EVEN FUCKING STOCK BAT YOU WILL GET OUTDAMAGED BY A MEDIC USING A BLUTSAUGER.
Part of the reason the Wrap Assassin has historically been considered trash is because it was quite a bit worse prior to Tough Break, where it got a number of buffs.
I figured out the crit thing from degroot The wrap with bfb and cleaver or bonk pretty much makes you the fastest bleed scout. Crit shots also have that satisfying ornament kill for kunai spies scouts snipers and any enemy on low health
The Wrap Assassin basically makes an "useless" weapon slot viable (kinda like Crusader's Crossbow does to Medic). I like to pair it with a pistol, especially the broken good Pretty Boy's Pocket Pistol.
I think it is the best of the lesser melees since the atomizer and basher are too good to pass up. It is juuuust slightly less useful. I do think it is the best option in a crowded payload up since it lets you safely do some damage.
@@UsingGorillaLogic If you already have another scout on your team with the basher (assuming comp because why would you use the basher in casual), then it's actually worth using depending on the map, since you might benefit more from the ball than you would an extra jump. Finally. I genuine love using this thing, and its so satisfying to see a video on it. Your Baby Faces Blaster video made me start using this thing and I loved it enough to get a strange one.
the wrap assassin was probably my first unlock, and it's also almost a direct upgrade. you're unlikely to use your melee for damage as scout anyway, but the wrap assassin gives you free damage over time at a range as long as you can hit the projectile. the fan o' war is also good.
Only now hearing how hated it is and how dumb it was thought to be..?? I as a scout player who always top scores use the wrap assassin and it helps a lot especially since a competent scout will never use his melee unless it's candy cane or atomizer
I don't really see what's wrong with the combo. I mean, yeah, it's not great, but that's just because the BFB sucks, not because the loadout itself is bad. I'd say it's the best option to pair with the BFB, or maybe substitute the cleaver with the Winger.
In my opinion, the wrap assassin is the better boston basher. As you get free ranged bleed from your melee slot and if you miss you don't take your own damage and bleed. The wrap assassin isn't made for direct combat, but for mid to long range fights or to weaken the enemy
3:38 I just noticed that, despite the melee damage being correct, you made a mistake with the Wrap Assassin's stat card. Here, you're saying that the Wrap Assassin's damage penalty is -35%, which would have resulted in the 'bat' doing 12 damage on a melee hit. That's not the case. If the damage penalty on melee hits was -35%, the actual damage would be 23, and the crit damage would be 68. I get why you made this mistake. 35% of 35 does equal 12 damage, but you mistakingly said that the damage penalty is -35% when it should be -65%. It's weird, but kinda fun seeing the wrong calculations ending up with the correct result. Great video as always.
Why I like the wrap assassin: -Takes up melee slot so you can use something like mad milk to capitalize off the bleed. -Recharges slower than the guillotine making it more balanced -Uaable as a, if not very weak, last resort melee -Weak hits allow you to hit hoovies with it without them feeling threatened. -Bleed softens up enemies allowing you to kill them with your primary or even the weak melee -Guaranteed snipe crits reward accuracy!
THank you, ive been preaching this to my friends for years bro. Sometimes you just cant hit that last shot but if you get it off at the beginning then it allows for you to not have to deal with finishing them off.

Fun fact, the cleaver and wrap assassin's bleeds actually stack because they deal separate damage types. I'd personally prefer using either the cleaver OR the WA and save the leftover slot for a different weapon, but it's certainly a decent option to run a combo scout of sorts using both.

Thank God I'm not that involved in this community, I never even thought of the possibility of this weapon being bad
I love it
its ranged bleed. on a melee weapon. on a class who doesnt have a lot of range. no shit its good.

@@UsingGorillaLogic If you already have another scout on your team with the basher (assuming comp because why would you use the basher in casual), then it's actually worth using depending on the map, since you might benefit more from the ball than you would an extra jump. You see competitive scouts run all three for a reason.
@@spiceforspice3461 I guess that just makes sense I am just a jump addict.
Whoever came up with the BabyFace/Cleaver/Wrap Assasin combo likely enjoys the scorch shot.
I don't really see what's wrong with the combo. I mean, yeah, it's not great, but that's just because the BFB sucks, not because the loadout itself is bad. I'd say it's the best option to pair with the BFB, or maybe substitute the cleaver with the Winger.
I'M SORRY THE WRAP ASSASIN HAS GUARANTEED CRITS?!
It's bad because you can't festivize it.
Its pre-festivized by the power of wrapping paper
Damn thats a good point
I mean technically it is festivized with the whole Christmas wrapping paper thing... but it'd be funny if Valve just added lights on top of that
@@blazingwaters7469 I mean, let’s be honest.
That sounds like a Valve thing to do.
next video: in defense of the fan o' war.
I've paired it up with the gulliotine and it's satisfying to see classes just bleed out and die with the combo.
Oh god this video was the inspiration for the bleed enforcer wasn't it
In my opinion, the wrap assassin is the better boston basher.
3:54 35% melee damage penalty to 35 cannot do 12, this is more like a 60% damage penalty ??
he prob meant 35% of normal damage
65%
it says 65% damage penalty in the weapon stats
But i love it when the two of us are in each other.
Hands down my favourite scout melee. I didn't even know people thought it was bad
People automatically format their opinions to their favorite youtuber (soundsmith, lazy purple, etc.)
@@poopyjoe7435 the soundsmith thing happened when it was overshadowed by sandman
The Boston Basher isn’t bad or anything, but this is better because Medics don't heal Scouts outside of Comp with is overrated anyway
Why I like the wrap assassin:
-Takes up melee slot so you can use something like mad milk to capitalize off the bleed.
-Recharges slower than the guillotine making it more balanced
-Uaable as a, if not very weak, last resort melee
-Weak hits allow you to hit hoovies with it without them feeling threatened.
-Bleed softens up enemies allowing you to kill them with your primary or even the weak melee
-Guaranteed snipe crits reward accuracy!
THank you, ive been preaching this to my friends for years bro. Sometimes you just cant hit that last shot but if you get it off at the beginning then it allows for you to not have to deal with finishing them off.
11:04 He literally said in the beginning of every Stereotypes video not to take his words as gospel. The fact that people STILL don't get the message lol
The video was before the sandman nerf, I think
“That’s god telling you you’re supposed to be dead” will somehow ingrain itself in my vocabulary, I know it
As someone who wasn’t around to play the game during the Sandman + Cleaver overrule, I’ve never even heard of people thinking this thing was bad. it’s always been my go to for scout. I don’t really care about uberfarming and atomizer feels too comital due to its upside only being active while it’s equipped. Wrap Assassin has always just felt like a natural pick to me. Also it’s vaguely Christmas themed and that’s easily the best holiday so that just makes me like it more. Screw using the Candy Cane though. I can hardly dodge rockets as is, I don’t need to be dying from a little splash
Ah yes cbt (cardboard and ball torture), very useful
Seriously preach how good this thing is!!
I’ve been using it for years to the point where it’s basically my go to Scout melee weapon
As a long time wrap assassin user nothing is more fun then hitting a low health class with the ball then one shitting then with a meat shot
Thank you, this weapon always seems to be one of the most underrated melee weapons, like The Sun on a Stick, Stock Knife and The Direct Hit
Stock knife and direct hit i can see, being genuinely good, but sun on a stick is to reliant on outside sources for its bonus, (also it’s a scout melee weapon if your trying to hit somebody with it your either really desperate, or meming)
@@Lh0000 at least its concistent against (and with )pyro
Plus if u dont want to use milk or pocket pistol it can save Ur butt
Less melee damage does not matter
@@dutchdutchman3633 yeah but it’s not even really good against pyro, if a pyro is that close to you with your melee out, your dead regardless and afterburn is at most a mild inconvenience at range and as the most mobile class in the game who’s flare shoting you?
And since melee damage is irrelevant it’s other upside is not only massively situational but also useless anyway, sure you COULD melee burning players with a pybro,.. OR you could 2 shot most classes with a scattergun at the same range. It’s still bad.
@@Lh0000 Just like fsoas says (and you)if that happens its the games way of saying
You are supposed to be dead
Unless you use the sodapopper mad milk and sunonastick
But otherwise unless the pyro goes of a Cliff near a healthpak and u Grab it there is nothing to do other than to take the pyro with u
@@Lh0000 that last one is better than scattershot because the hitbox is Just bigger and also u attack faster than with scattershot u deal even more dps with the sunonastick against sombody on fire than if u hit em with a meatshot
Altough yes i acknowledge that its cituational but is more useful than it seems
Plus it hates the sc@rch!t
