Just an awesome unplugged version. If you really want to hear his vocal metal opera vocals please checkout Roads to Madness from the album The Warning it's a masterpiece 🔥

I think you hit the nail on the head about Queensryche's unique appeal. It's that combination of metal intensity, a little shadowy, and beautiful melodies and harmonies. Then add Geoff''s incomparable, clean vocals so full of expression and texture!
THIS is the kind of metal I love! They are accomplished in songwriting, musicianship, performance (best live band I've ever seen), and VOCALS!!!
Their music makes you FEEL something!
What a lethal combination they were!
I'm so glad you're discovering them!

Welcome to the Geoff Tate appreciation club 😉 The Unplugged session has some of his best live performance work. You should check out I Will Remember (if you're using the version from QR Bootlegs it's the 2nd performance of the track), that and The Killing Words from that performance. They are both absolutely stunning and a masterclass in singing. Other Queensryche tracks you should check out are the Suite Sister Mary and My Empty Room + Eyes of Stranger from Operation: Livecrime, Someone Else from Promised Land and the studio version of Scarborough Fair, which is amazing.
The story behind The Lady Wore Black is that Geoff Tate came up with the lyrics as he was walking home through the woods in the early morning hours after being up all night recording the EP.

@@Texas_Love Another fun one would be Real World from the Last Action Hero OST.. they did a bunch of sound track work with Michael Kamen.. As a result Queensryche is credited as not only one of the godfathers of prog metal but also an early influence on symphonic metal and Tate is cited as a foundational influence on the whole European Powermetal vocal style. Another Seattle band that also had bigger influence outside the states was Metal Church, you might dig Gods of Wrath by them. Back in my late teens and early 20's Queensryche was the North End band and Metal Church was the South End one.. Metal Church had influence on other sub genres though... messed with my head watching a documentary about Metal and seeing a Metal Church sticker/emblem on the back of a VW van or two at a festival in Germany.

You need to watch the Live in Tokyo version which is the original metal version instead of this instrumental version.

My favorite band of all time since this first song came out, but there is no comparison between this and the electric version. No comparison. Watch 1984 Tokyo

Studio version is the way to hear it 1st. Live should be the 2nd experience. Just my humble preference.

You're making some great song choices for your introduction into Queensryche. I say jump to the Operation Mindcrime album songs, then the Empire album. Geoff Tate at his prime.

RAGE FOR ORDER is my FAVORITE Album (barely) but IF YOU like Geoff's vocals...YOU REALLY NEED TO REACT TO THAT ALBUM...and by-the-way...It's Geoff's FAV too...I just found that out a few months ago.

No autotune (5 years before autotune was a thing), just raw freaking talent. In the day Geoff Tate was unequalled vocally IMO. Bruce Dickinson, Dio and Halford are definitely not chopped liver but tonality and pitch across his entire rage and just raw power belts Geoff was the man.
