Far Smaller studio? Sony Santa Monica has 200 employees and Sony Bend has 135, which qualifies both as big Triple A game studios, although still smaller than the biggest AAA game studios out there. In fact, Corey Balrog himself defined Santa Monica as a "not so big AAA studio". Days Gone it's a AAA first party Playstation game developed with a bigger budget than Uncharted 4 which makes the game a huge disappointment. Not only it did a lot less than other open world games but it did it far worse too. It's ok if you end up making a 7.5 game(this is a 6.5 at best) but at least make it something unique that you can't really find elsewhere on the market or at least on PS.

I never thought I would say this, but this game with all of its problems is really enjoyable and great game and I mean it! I bought this game last week and started playing it. After maybe 5 hour, I wasn't sure if I want to play it more ( I said to myself: buying this game was a mistake), but I played it and than after few more hours I couldn't stop playing! Yes, this game has its problem but the good things about it are very stronger than the bad things and I loved the story, every character in the game (except one) I loved that it's a long game and the fact that after hours of playing the game introduces you to new area, new enemies, and much more. First I suggest everyone, who wants to try it don't hesitate and second if you can start the game on hard difficulty, Man it make the game more intense (after killing a larg horde on hard, I was so happy like I killed Father Gascoigne from Bloodborne) I really can't wait for the Days Gone 2. 8 out of 10 for me, but a really great 8.
No, Mad Max is actually better than this; the world of Mad Max might be just as empty as this but Mad Max has actual survival elements(casual ones) that simply do not exist in Days Gone. Driving is also a lot better in Mad Max.
Fuzzy Dunlop you must not have a lot to do since I’ve seen you commenting on several reviews with nothing but negativity. You clearly haven’t played the game because the world is full of shit. Criticize whatever you want but claiming one of its biggest strong points in the world is empty is objectively incorrect.
This seems like it’ll be a grower-over-time game. Met at launch with a middling critical response, doesn’t sell great but then develops a big cult following a year or 2 later.

Much better than far cry. I say that as a far cry fan. The story in this is top notch. The world building and characters actually have depth in Days Gone.
@@midnightshade32 You probably don't know many good stories or characters in games. The reviewer here and pretty much everyone so far said the dialogue is horrible.
''Bloated festering genre''? The only thing bloated is people saying this over and over again. By that logic aren't shooters a bloating festering genre, super hero films are bloated too, and why not say battle royal as well just because they are made in abundance. For some reason zombie games get called over used while everyone gets to make the same genre in a span of a month. I never understood this so please explain it to me. I think one group didn't like zombie games so they called them overused then everyone just ran with that for some reason.
I'm a huge of zombies, RE is one of my favorite game franchises of all time. But the genre is pretty bloated (although I think it's more the open-world genre that's the big hindrance here and not the zombie part). But yeah, FPS and battle royal as well. It's all the same and so boring
@@Goomyx1492 As long as you're saying it's true for other genres then fine but my point was that the zombie genre seems to get called out on it far more than the others. There are genres for a reason. Categories for people to select from to suit their taste.
Sons of Redemption with Zombies :D Jokes aside, had the glitches and bug fixes beforehand Jones might gave this a 8.5 or 9, seeing that he enjoyed this open world premise and its gripping story.
I love it how you actually show every little negative side about the game, not just talk about it, so I can see how bad it actually looks like in gameplay. I instantly became a patreon supporter to you, keep up these type of reviews and I will stay for a long time. Great job!
They will fix most of the issues with this game, but what matters is that the good parts are VERY VERY good! And there’s a beautiful and fully realized world AND...ya get to be a damn biker! What more would ya want? The comment that the story drags is odd because Far Cry is one the MOST repetitive IPs ever made and it’s rarely mentioned. Personally, I’m sad when after 150 hrs that is all you get in such an impressive world, be it AC, Horizon, and other great open world games. For me, the more the content the merrier. And the freakiest themselves set this game apart, mixed with its open world nature. Overall, this appears to be a breathe of fresh air and a dream come true of sorts in an otherwise overly saturated market.
Just finished the story, played the game for 80 hours so far, did most of the side stuff. I feel like there should be follow up reviews these days with games getting patches and stuff. Yes, it should have been less buggy at launch, but the game seems very different from the state it was in here. Especially on PS5, the game looks so awesome, runs butter smooth and the story plus open world are great. It's like Mad Max meets last of us. Though it was weird throughout the game Deacon is Starkiller xD also, anybody remember the diplomat Phoebe dated on friends who didn't know English ("plate?")? That's Boozer 😅
@@MrSwitchblade327 Yeah true, maybe my comment is a bit unfair, I just want to experience the game at its full potential, day one patches rarely fix every annoying bug. I have finished this game on every difficulty!!! I have never had any performance issues EVER!!! They have fixed all the bugs and add a Challenge Mode where you can earn patches that give you buffs that transfer to the game. This is the BEST video game I have ever played. Fairest review I've seen of this game!!! If you review it again, I'm sure you would rate it at least an 8.5 if not 9.0. For me it will always be a10.0.
It’s annoying with all the hate. Yeah the game is not going to be perfect, don’t forget the company has not made a console game in a decade. If this was made by rockstar or Ubisoft, I would understand being more harsh
I Played for a few hours and I have to say that the Batman vision , mission objective markers and minimap indicators are ruining an otherwise great experience . I think I will wait until the summer for the Survival Mode to arrive so that I can play this game properly , I wish devs will add an option to remove mini map, focus vision , fast travel and mini map separately . Assassins Creed Odyssey did a great job allowing players to disable mission objective markers (Exploration vs guided mode).
I really respect your reviews but days gone is still getting hate because people keep comparing it to game that are literal 9/10 's , this type of game was a first for bend studio and I think they did a fantastic job. Their passion and hard work really paid off. There is a patch that was released not too long ago that cleared up whatever bugs and sound and other problems there were so the game is even better now. I really think this should be a day one game for people who want adventure and a good single player game.
Sorry, but your comment seems extremely biased. All games aren't reviewed in a vacuum. The industry being what it is, you can't give this game a high score if a lot of better games are out there. You can't just claim all the bugs have been fixed with the first patch. That would be unprecedented and is completely unrealistic. Fixing bugs also doesn't necessarily make the game itself better. It just makes it more stable. People should look at this game critically like every other game out there before buying.
@@Ayoul we all have our opinions and some people might not like the game and for some this could be their favorite game of 2019 so far, I'm just saying that the review scores don't always have to sway your choice of whether you should or shouldn't purchase the game. I have already played this game and in my opinion I really like it and I don't think it deserves such low scores but at the same time the scores are fair in terms of others opinions. @@nawaazsuleman I agree with most of that, but it applies to pretty much all games. It's weird to single out Days Gone in particular. Being passionate sometimes isn't enough to make a great game and there's a lot of great games out there.

Really great review Jones. Ultimately with a game like this I think you've gotta ask yourself whether its core strengths and ideas are appealing enough to you for you to be able to forgive it's many flaws and shortcomings... the very definition of a "swimming in 7s" if you'll forgive the Huberism. Unfortunately I've got too much in my back log to justify picking it up right now but I do hope this game does well cause it does seem like there are a lot of interesting ideas in there.
Seems like a 7 that could elevate to an 8 with tech fixes. I was looking for beautiful environments to explore and an interesting, dark story. I think it covers those interests. Looking forward to playing it.
*Days Gone* is pretty scary and fun, when you play it right. I'm just moving about collecting all the resources I need, and will need for later. Not to mention, I'm not trying to run through the game just to see how fast I could finish it, no. I'm actually taking my time being stealth as I gather resources as I take out these campers and a shit load of freakers. I mean, who does that any way; Buy a game and rush through it, like you have to return it the next day? You can't enjoy a anything that way, anything! Especially, an open world game. This game is fun, and in some cases scary as hell. My rating would be an *8.7 outta 10* for *Days Gone. *
Jones, this review better encompasses How I feel about RDR2 and the kind of score it would have received from me. Not the same issues, but a similar variety of issues, as you have heard a million times plagued RDR2. Setting that aside, seeing that "This is as bad as it gets" makes this a solid BUY for me. I will be picking it up tonight!
So, from all the info I can gather. IGN give this game 6.5 because the main character aren't LGBT female or black. and most importently, it's like Red Dead redemption 2 but not from Rock star.
Wow that really pisses me off. SJWS need to sink into the ocean with ign in to. So tired of these idpol assholes, they are just as bad as any neo -Nazi, worse actually because mainstream media is full of em and normal people don't call them out. I am guessing they will be giving the woke of us2 a 10 off the bat.
Good review, you went into more detail than other reviews, the trip wire, bear trap, sending people to certain camps. No other review spoke about the intricate pieces of gameplay.
Just read a few other reviews before watching this one and I have to say that this is the best and most well written one of the bunch. Considering that they all give the same score to the game this one at least gives proper 8nformation while others just read like the reviewers didn't cared about the game to detail what was good and what was bad about it. Hopefully a lot of the problems get patched out, if anything this game looks like a good game to waste time in just exploring and traveling through the world. P.S. Weapon durability needs to go away, or at least be used only on survival modes.
You are not picking and bringing up things that most people don't think about. This is an excellent game and I have no complaints about it. I just finished The Last Of Us and went back to this game and it was going from one good game to another good game. 8.5 for me
I get the sense that this will be one of those games that's seen as an underrated gem in the future. As a lot of the indie reviewers are enjoying it more than mainstream gaming Media reviewers.
Heartbreaking is a good word. This looks like it does a lot of things that I wish other open-world zombie games did, but it would've benefited from an extra year of polish, or better hardware. Right now I'm feeling "Wait for sale, and patches."
Its already been in development for years. It's to be expected since its bends first foray into ps4 and consoles since syphon filter iirc, which I loved.
Both Mad Max and State of Decay received average reviews and turned out to be good games. I expect this to be right up my alley. It looks like it might go on a little too long for some people, but I'm not in a rush to beat it so this won't be a problem.
Finally! a well balanced and clear review! Thank you very much. I cant remember the last time a game came out & I was so baffled by the reviews. Thanks again.
For me the worst part is that it seems as if I've seen every single possible gameplay moment just through the marketing alone, let alone review gameplay footage. Scavenge resources, ride bike, clear outposts, run from zombies-turn around shoot zombies-run from zombies repeat. That's about it. Cant see the game offering much more in terms of gameplay than that, and for me it's simply not enough to make me interested. Trying to describe any aspect of this game without obviously comparing it to another game that does it better is my consensus from the reviews. It's a shame, if it had done a few more unique things it could have really been great, like zombies that actively hunt you down at night like in I Am Legend. I just started playing Dying Light for the first time yesterday and my word what an experience - glad I'll be playing that. Good effort on Bend Studios part though, they didn't actively fail at anything they tried to do, but their overall scope wasn't inspiring or innovative enough in the first place.
So far the best review I've checked. Well explained and very objective. 7.5 sounds like the score this game really deserves: very good and almost great.
Really? Funny you say that I remember when xbox games were getting 7.5 and the entire industry just lost its shit and said it weren't good enough and therefore a fail. Bias journalism this entire generation so I'm not surprised tbh how some how a 7 on a Sony game is some how okay
What an interesting game. I can see they genuinely tried and poured a lot of actual care in to it, maybe with this experience they can go on to make something truly amazing next time. Still picking this up, I like games that I can tell the devs put heart in to it and those zombies are real neat.
@@FuzzyDlop it's a survival game.... Of course the shooting isn't going to be that great... It has over 30 hours of single player No micro transactions Free dlc Open world yet still very heavy on single player The repetitive stuff you don't even have to do It's your choice
You should have mentioned that future DLC and updates for this game will be free! Which is insane and deserves attention and praise! Awesome review btw! Fully agree on everything stated and the score it was given. If bugs had been fixed it would easily he an 8. Cheers
@Syuna not what reputable reviewers have been saying but sure. Yong Yea said the game is a lot of fun and has a great story. Dreamcastguy gave it a 7 and said it would have been an 8 if not for the bugs. This review pretty much implies the same thing. So please, why do you think its a 6.5 at best? Ive been playing it at my mates house today and its awesome.
Last week a comment was left on Cup of Jones critiquing how sometimes it feels like Reviews have been written for a written format, rather than a spoken one. "That's partially due to how much driving he does" is an example of this I think. It would have worked well I think on paper, but, especially with the lengthy pause in the edit between paragraphs, it's really quite jarring.
The technical issues bum me out. Good review, and it is a review that follows the 5 is average out of 10 galaxy brain scheme, and not 7 out of 10 = the game kicked me in the groin and took my lunch money and made love to my mother, then 8 to 10 out of 10 = clear cut beautiful polished game with no flaws scored depending on how hyped the reviewer personally is.
7.5/10 seems reasonable, more than fair. A lot of the problems come down to technical issues, not so much characters, story, dialogue, music, sound, or general gameplay. This comes off as a game that needed an extra month in the oven, though seeing this game be updated several times within a week definitely encourages a buy sometime down the road.
It's weird. Most reviews I've seen so far have been pretty negative but I've thought "I don't know, it looks cool to me. I'll give it a shot." Then I watch this actually POSITIVE review from Easy Allies, and suddenly I'm thinking of skipping it. The dialogue seems.. not great, and the Bethesda-like bugs shown in the latter half of the review. Ehh, I'll wait for a sale. Great review as always though, guys.
I wonder what the enemy respawn is like. If you kill the enemies in the area and then save and reload, will the same enemies respawn in the same places ?
I started playing this game a couple weeks ago. It is interesting that many of the issues mentioned here are no longer present in the current version of the game. Sometimes it is a much better experience to play games months later. But of course, if day-and-date reviews are part of your job, you cannot take that luxury.
This is the most honest review n review score u have seen for this game. I love this channel. Unlike Gamespot n IGN where they gives out shit score just to get clicks.
People seem to focus a lot on the bugs and that they'll be patched out, but the game isn't a 7 simply because of the bugs. There are some core issues with the design and story that just can't be patched out. Maybe they'll be able to update the game eventually with more content, but dismissing the negativity because it can be fixed post launch does no one a service. This isn't how the industry should be and Sony shouldn't just get a pass because they are Sony. A Ubisoft or EA game releasing in this state has people up in arms all the time so why isn't this the case here? Is it blind fanboyism?
my honest review: - All the skeletons that zombies feed from are ALL THE SAME WTF - You can clip almost everything. (dead bodies, your bike, plants...) - Sounds like they hired a metal screamer to do the zombie sounds - Look at the blood... It has a single texture and it dries up like old GTA games - Gunplay is awful - Riding your bike is not fun because of the percieved input lagg. It takes at least half a second for you to start turning after initial input. - There are two speeds on your bike: moving forward excrutiatingly slow or full throttle. - If you see 4 cars, chances are that 3 of them will be literally the same with a different paintjob. - The beginning does not connect you with the characters. A girl dies, which was supposed to be an emotional moment because the protagonist obviously knew her, but I couldn't care less. - At one point, I was standing still for 10 minutes while 'rippers' (oh come on) were burning 'boozer' ( no words) with a blowtorch. In that time, I bet they could have cremated him 3 times. they also repeated the exact same movement with the exact same dialogue about every 20 seconds... - There are no animations for anything (crafting, healing...) except for when you do something with your bike (taking something out or refueling). - When you are stabbing zombies, you can literally heal without animation while fighting, which is totally OP and disregards any form of stealth if you have enough bandages. - At one point, your 'cool' character is riding a bike with a crossbow strapped to his back evading zombies.... Wonder where they got that idea from... - THE FUCKING FLASHLIGHT !!! I mean come on dude... Who thought that was a good idea... This list was compiled after an hour of playing... Final verdict: Shitty Daryl from TWD fanfiction the game

So its Mad Max meets World War Z! Hells yeah!!
Yeah the Mad Max side of it is appealing to me a lot.
No, Mad Max is actually better than this; the world of Mad Max might be just as empty as this but Mad Max has actual survival elements(casual ones) that simply do not exist in Days Gone. Driving is also a lot better in Mad Max.
@@FuzzyDlop Chill, he talking about gameplay comparison
Shame people forgot ride to hell retribution.
Just finished this game.
10/10 and in my top 5 games of all time.
This seems like it’ll be a grower-over-time game. Met at launch with a middling critical response, doesn’t sell great but then develops a big cult following a year or 2 later.
Nope, it's not Dying Light which is an actual good game with fantastic post-game support. This is just bad, boring and empty.
@@FuzzyDlop If no mans sky came back. This shit can too nbs
@@FuzzyDlop Your agenda is uninspiring. If you really want to try and turn people away from Days Gone...just don't buy the game and don't give the developer your money. Let others form their own opinion.
It's obvious, with your replies being a steady negative affair, that you're just trying to bring this game down. It's okay, dude. It's just a video game.
I am rooting for this game because the same guys made the PHENOMENAL Resistance Retribution for the PSP
Resistance Retribution was one of coolest games on PSP.

Great review Jones. Always unbiased, neutral, but still exciting over the parts that get you going. Keep it up!
Thanks for the honest review Jones! Still looks like a lot of fun seems much like a FarCry, you either love this kind of thing or hate it
I'm excited it looks like a blast lol
Agreed. I felt some Far Cry vibes, too. Definitely a skip for me, personally.
Much better than far cry. I say that as a far cry fan. The story in this is top notch. The world building and characters actually have depth in Days Gone.
I love all far cry games from 1 to 5 and days gone is fun for me. There are some glitches here and there but didnt ruin my enjoyment.

Jokes aside, had the glitches and bug fixes beforehand Jones might gave this a 8.5 or 9, seeing that he enjoyed this open world premise and its gripping story.

what do you think of it
I love it how you actually show every little negative side about the game, not just talk about it, so I can see how bad it actually looks like in gameplay.
Give it a couple patches and will probably be worth a check-a-look.
patches arent gonna fix its lack of creativity

Best review I've seen. Despite some of the negative reviews, I'm still picking up my pre-order tonight. I honestly think with some patches it'll be an amazing game. I'm already stoked for the free DLC coming out later too.
I have finished this game on every difficulty!!! I have never had any performance issues EVER!!! They have fixed all the bugs and add a Challenge Mode where you can earn patches that give you buffs that transfer to the game. This is the BEST video game I have ever

I do hope people give this game a chance because I know how passionate the team is about this game and I do know many people will really like this game
@@nawaazsuleman I agree with most of that, but it applies to pretty much all games. It's weird to single out Days Gone in particular.
I only disagree that because a team is passionate, than people should buy the game. People should do whatever they feel like based on the info that is out there about the game. Being passionate sometimes isn't enough to make a great game and there's a lot of great games out there.
Honestly it's sitting at a score of 71 on metacritic, which was to be expected. But you guys need to understand, this was bend studios' first attempt at making an open world game and it was a damn good effort, give credit where credit's due.

You sound like Jones just slammed the game. He didn't, he said he liked it a lot, but that it's held back by technical difficulties.
The next Driveclub,GTSport, and The Order 1886. I have no problem with. I loved all three games. Just hope they iron out the framerate.
Can’t wait to play this, I think I’ll enjoy it.
You guys always have the most detailed insightful reviews. Keep up the awesome work.
Easy-Allies you guys are the best reviewers in youtube. 100 times better than Ign or Gamespot. Do a series about rebooting ps2 classics.
Unversed Hero yeah these guys and ACG are the only 2 I get reviews from
You are not picking and bringing up things that most people don't think about. This is an excellent game and I have no complaints about it. I just finished The Last Of Us and went back to this game and it was going from one good game to another good game.
8.5 for me
Fighting a Bear that is on fire we truly live in the golden age
I get the sense that this will be one of those games that's seen as an underrated gem in the future. As a lot of the indie reviewers are enjoying it more than mainstream gaming Media reviewers.
Heartbreaking is a good word. This looks like it does a lot of things that I wish other open-world zombie games did, but it would've benefited from an extra year of polish, or better hardware. Right now I'm feeling "Wait for sale, and patches."
Its already been in development for years. It's to be expected since its bends first foray into ps4 and consoles since syphon filter iirc, which I loved.
You may not need to wait long for the patches. They're already on 1.04 now, like 20-something GB worth.
Finally! A FUCKING DECENT REVIEW for this game. Unlike the"Review" from Gamespot or ign
Both Mad Max and State of Decay received average reviews and turned out to be good games. I expect this to be right up my alley. It looks like it might go on a little too long for some people, but I'm not in a rush to beat it so this won't be a problem.
Yeah im a huge fan of how mad max is as well, if only the game was a little longer and had a bigger map. But this seems kinda like how mad max is
Finally! a well balanced and clear review!
I hope the songs playing in this review are directly taken from the games OST.
Great review!
Good review! I'm planning on picking this up
So far the best review I've checked. Well explained and very objective. 7.5 sounds like the score this game really deserves: very good and almost great.
Brandon Jones last of the "real" professional reviewers!
Why are all the reviews that give it 7s out of 10 making it seem so dismal ? Its not a 4 out of 10. A 7.5 game is totally enjoyable
Really? Funny you say that I remember when xbox games were getting 7.5 and the entire industry just lost its shit and said it weren't good enough and therefore a fail. Bias journalism this entire generation so I'm not surprised tbh how some how a 7 on a Sony game is some how okay

I'll wait a few months until it's cheaper and most of the bugs have been fixed. This and ACG's reviewer are the best I've seen so far.
Agreed.
This comes off as a game that needed an extra month in the oven, though seeing this game be updated several times within a week definitely encourages a buy sometime down the road.
the only best and honest review i have seen. thank you for the most honest review among all those rushed ones.

I bought this game on sale a week ago and it is amazing. One of the best games of this generation for me.
I just started the game a couple days ago myself and I would agree with you. It seems most of the issues mentioned have been patched out.
I’ve been on a roller coaster with this game. Excited upon announcement, bored up until the lead up to release, now I kind of want to experience it.
This is the most honest review n review score u have seen for this game. I love this channel. Unlike Gamespot n IGN where they gives out shit score just to get clicks.
The same score as for Mortal Kombat. I think it speaks more about MK's grindy grind than about Days Gone lack of quality.
Don't bite the hand?
Great review Jones. Knew exactly what worked here and what didn't. You are truly in alignment with the genre. That's why I trust your 10.0s/Greats.
my honest review:
- All the skeletons that zombies feed from are ALL THE SAME WTF
- You can clip almost everything. (dead bodies, your bike, plants...)
- Sounds like they hired a metal screamer to do the zombie sounds
- Look at the blood... It has a single texture and it dries up like old GTA games
- Gunplay is awful
- Riding your bike is not fun because of the percieved input lagg.
Set in my home state of Oregon? Cool, I thought I recognized Mt Hood in the gameplay footage. And sweet that the devs are based in Bend.
