  • DJI Air 2S vs Mavic 2 Pro - An Image Quality Comparison
    Made this quick image quality comparison between the new DJI Air 2S & the old reliable DJI Mavic 2 Pro to try and get to the bottom of the debate over which is the better drone. Tried to line up the shots as similarly as possible (which was a lot more challenging than initially anticipated since the M2P has a far more narrow 28mm FOV compared to the Air 2S with 22mm) as well as test the various different capture modes including video, photo, panorama, hyperlapse & more. Let me know in the comments which you think has the superior image quality!

    CAMERA SETTINGS/TESTING PROCEDURE 📷
    Both drones were flown without the use of ND or Polarizer filters and using the default camera settings including auto exposure and standard color mode. I took every photo/video from the exact same spot with each drone so any misalignment is usually due to the difference in focal length. No LUTs or post-processing was applied to any of the footage/images in editing.

    Only thing I don't like about the air 2s (having used one for awhile now) is the wider field of view. Would be interesting to see Air 2s cropped to 4k side by side with m2p 4k hq mode.

    This is a really good video, and it's funny how neck and neck these two are with different pros and cons. I have an Air 2S and it's my first drone. I absolutely love it, but am going to get a Mavic 2 Pro. The variable aperture and extra bit of dynamic range in video are important to me. Not looking forward to giving up that controller or the size of it though. It's an easy drone to love. For your images in here tagged as HDR from the M2P, was that an in camera mode or merged bracketing done in post?

    • @DigitalTechReviewsTips
      @DigitalTechReviewsTips  3 года назад

      Thanks! And yeah - I honestly made the video mostly just so I could see if there was a difference between the two drones. All the HDRs, panos, etc were merged and done using the respective drones’ software.
      If you have the Air 2S and it’s serving all your needs I strongly would advise you to try and wait on the M2P as DJI should be releasing a Mavic 3 Pro within the next year. As someone who owns both the Air 2S & the M2P I now hardly use the M2P as it has less range, a worse controller, is louder, bigger, older components, and lacks 5.4k video. The name of the “Pro” definitely makes it seem like an upgrade and I think people also subconsciously favor the M2P’s images cause they know it has the Hasselblad lens, however other than sideways sensors, variable aputure, and the ability to have a drone with “Pro” in the name (which can sometime help you get some jobs) it’s not an upgrade.

    • @SamEmilio2
      @SamEmilio2 3 года назад +3

      @@DigitalTechReviewsTips thank you for that response! I ended up ordering a Mavic 2 Pro after writing my original comment, and after getting some time with it I've gotta say - for me personally, it's the better drone. Having the variable aperture, for one thing, is really big. I kind of think that 5.5k is a bit overkill for a 1" sensor, and haven't noticed any real sharpness issues with the 4k HQ mode on M2P. The extra bit of video dynamic range from the M2P is a big deal to me, though. What I'm honestly a little mad about (not at you because your video is focused on the output only) is that I hadn't seen a single overview comparison video where they talk about the more "pro" features in the Mavic. Having all those custom buttons on the remote is HUGE to me, as well as two dials and being able to have a dedicated button for pointing the gimbal right down and then right up again. Having manual settings be called "manual" (and alongside Av and Tv modes) and not "Pro Mode" feels more natural when coming from a camera. I truly wish that the Air was enough for what I wanted from a drone, because the images from it are top notch and the whole feel of it is so balanced, spot on and easy to love

    Air2s is very crisp and detailed but it crushes shadows in almost every scene (to compensate the less Dynamic Range) - (compared to M2p) and honestly the colors on M2p are more vivid more natural .. just better. I preffer 24mm over the 28mm of M2p. M2p is just more organic looking for me. Air2s if you noticed is always a bit "colder" tone than more natural M2p

    Great comparison, the video looks a lot better on the Air s2, just hope the release the sdk so it can be used for waypoints in litchi and mapping with pix4d. It goes to show how good the mavic 3 pro has to be to beat this quality. I already own the pro 2 and have just purchased the air s2 just for the video capabilities.. thanks for sharing

    • @DigitalTechReviewsTips
      @DigitalTechReviewsTips  3 года назад

      Yeah! I don’t see much reason for someone shooting video to get the M2P anymore other than adjustable aputure and third party app support. Obviously the first one ain’t gonna change but it would be nice if they released the SDK as there’s no reason this drone can’t be used for mapping just like the M2P.

      Any professional will most likely use HLG ungraded mode anyway, so that is less of an importance.

      I don’t know if you didn’t watch far enough but there are actually photos taken on both drones throughout this video too! I personally think the M2P is a hair sharper but it’s hard to really compare them cause the Air 2S is also a wider lens with more distortion.

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 3 года назад

      @@DigitalTechReviewsTips odd, i think it is very clear the m2p is a softer image out of the camera (but that isn't a bad thing!) the air 2S is almost over sharpened straight out of camera. it's really close either way, i do think m2p also does a bit better in the shadows and lower light.

      @@canyonblue737-8 sharper ? you mean contrast I think, which you can add in post

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 3 года назад +3

      @@TomMcCooly no i do mean sharper... all the edges of everything from buildings to blades of grass are sharper out of the camera on the air 2s. often this initially makes the image look "better" but almost all videographers prefer a softer image to start because 1) you can add sharpness in post and 2) a slightly softer image looks more film like and natural and less like something coming out of a home video camera. it is far harder to soften an image in post than sharpen it. they are both great, but the mavic 2 pro has a more "film" like look to start.
      one other major difference is the mavic 2 pro is underpowered processor wise after 3 years and so in certain 4K modes there is distortion that has to be corrected in post and the air 2s is doing the correction right inside the drone, even on its 5K footage because the processor is more powerful. if you are using normal color science the air 2S is also way, way better than mavic 2 pro, only if filming in LOG for post processing does mavic 2 pro shine. if you intend to use footage directly out of the drone without extensive post processing the air 2S isn't just a better value, it will actually give you a better result. the mavic 2 pro footage HAS to be worked with to get the best quality.
      obviously the mavic 2 pro is near the end of its life and while it still has advantages (adjustable aperture etc.) it is clearly showing its age and is no longer a good value for the money... hopefully the mavic 3 is around the corner and blows us away but i keep thinking DJI is delaying it while trying to make sure it meets the requirements of the US drone law changes revolving around Remote ID which still are a bit of a moving target.

    Thanks for the video. If my observation is correct, in general Air 2S is better, the only better thing I noticed on the 2Pro is the smooth frames on videos, but all the colors and sharpness go for the Air 2S. Do you agree? So I am finding this to be somehow not logic as Air 2S is cheaper and the 2Pro having the Hasselblad camera. How can this be justified? Thank you in advance.

    • @DigitalTechReviewsTips
      @DigitalTechReviewsTips  3 года назад

      That’s basically right. I did find when working with the video more however that the Air 2S tends to have more fringing and be less sharp as you move towards the edges of the frame whereas the M2P is pretty a lot more consistent.
      The Air 2S is mainly cheaper because it’s similar specs as the M2P but made ~3 years later. Kinda like if Apple made the iPhone XS again now it would be selling for a lot less than the XS originally did. Also, the M2P has things like adjustable aperture and is slightly more wind stable which pros like bettter.
