@20:00 That carbon fiber roadster was owned by Joost de Vries and was the test mule for the Roadster 3.0, thats why it has the R80 pack and so many unique upgrades, those were all being tested as possible releases for the market to keep the Roadster market thriving. Most of the upgrades never made release. I have the only other Roadster with the 3.0 brake upgrade, its a 2 piece floating rotor make by Tarox.
These guys are gonna be so busy in 2022 when Model 3s start coming out of warranty. What a great business opportunity to take advantage of and I hope they're able to open up shops in other cities.
Pete Gruber: What a Legend! The original Roadster will be the car that started it all: the move of a complete industry to another motor. Just happens about all 100 years or so.
A big thanks to Pete and his team at Gruber for keeping these Roadsters on the road. Thanks also for the owners willing to put the money into repairs. Looks to me that a Roadster owner who send their car to Gruber can have confidence that they have the skill and knowledge to do the repairs. I'm a big believer in the right to repair, not just for the DIY type, but for small (local) business to take up the slack in getting a Tesla repaired.
Thanks, love what these guys are doing to keep these old Roadsters on the road. Again I can't help but think why no one is working on a direct replacement for these packs. It's above my skills but I don't think impossible. The BMS may need tweaking but in the end you need xyz volts to the controls - regardless of the chemistry. This would be a great way to breathe new life in many older Roadsters. New 2170 cells, BMS, and swap out the charge ports to make them J1772. That'd be a cool project!
20:19 - **there is another carbon fibre roadster in existence** look on the UK Autotrader, there is a 2012 Carbon fibre roadster with just 1,500 miles on the clock. Super stunning. Please like this comment so they can see.
This video is like taking a course in Tesla Roadster battery systems. So good, I’m going to watch this several times just to understand all the information. Great video.
I absolutely admire the way you find the faults in the cars design and you improve the original design. Also that you salvage what would have been thrown away and from another video I watched you saved a whole car due to 1 in over 7000 batteries that was faulty. Simply amazing!!!
It’s great that these guy have filled this gap but I wish Tesla would do more of this type or work themselves. Obviously it can be done with a small crew and it says a lot to the 2nd market which keeps their resale values high. I love seeing all the new electric car shops opening up around the country. Ive got 3 all electric shops within 30 miles of me that I know of
I have some acedemic & real world knowledge of electrical & electronics engineering. This workshop & technical leadership are a North Star when related to Tesla. Highly informative!
So cool man! Hard to believe a place like this exists! Makes me want to start a new career! Giving people hope to keep these cars alive (literally alive)! Thanks for your channel. Hope to run into you one day out there at a super charger!
I’ve never been interested in cars, however since EV’s have become the talk, I’ve tried to learn more about them especially Tesla. Picking up my first one, M3 in 2 weeks. Thanks for you videos, Kyle. 🙂
Impressive stuff - well done to the guys there for seeing the value and benefit of preserving what are essentially modern classics - interesting to see how fragile the Roadster components are and how without this kind of service and donor parts they would essentially become useless which would be a great shame. I guess the S won't suffer the same fate having more around and incremental improvements. Would love to work in a set-up like this :)
Awesome- what do they normally resell the cars for? Also Kyle, you may want to invest in some wireless lapel mics. Your setup is great for inside a car, but the audio suffers in situations like these. It was even the case in the i3 video. Cheers
I have a 2013 Model S and although the MCU is working fine I know it's only a matter of time before I need the eMMC replaced. What options do you offer for this? Can I send you just the Tegra board or do you need the entire MCU? How much does eMMC replacement cost? What if the eMMC has already failed? Can you recreate the data or will I lose functionality? I believe the eMMC holds the security certificates for mobile app access doesn't it?
They have got over 1% of all the Tesla Roadsters ever built there. No $ amount ever mentioned for anything, I guess if you have to ask you can't afford it. Three weeks, three months, serious down time here. I imagine newer Tesla models have cured many of the problems discussed here, but these roadsters seem far from low maintenance.
emmc failure is becoming a big deal . no way i would pay Tesla for another mcu 1 , mcu 2 replacement i could justify . if not then it would have to be the repair option. good to see more people offering this service. edit: i would love to see a company this forward thinking here in the uk
Vin number one is actually an orbit going around mars and earth on an endless loop The vehicle was stripped down to the bare essentials battery pack was removed also the pem was removed The electric drive motors were also removed that was to reduce weight on lunch. There was no air in the tires they were filled with foam. The same kind of film that you would have in construction tires because as you know if there was air in the tires they would explode before getting to orbit that would’ve been bad because it would’ve blew up the rocket as a result as it got into orbit.
All I can say is that the Model S/3/X/Y better age more gracefully and not lose support from Tesla or they’re going to be in a world of hurt. I love my P3D but videos like this scare me a little of long term reliability/parts support.
Hello, Where else would you see a large specialist car workshop.... Without a single drop of oil on the floor...squeaky clean.. Without exhaust systems stacked up.. Without big oil and waste barrels.....?????????/ Cordialement
Isn't this the guy who's shop burned down out of pure carelessness not once but twice? I would check his bank account before I parked my car anywhere near his shop.
Thank you Kyle for allowing Pete Gruber to just talk rather than endlessly butting in as a lesser man may have done. Great stuff.
Totally Agree!

Don't forget the early Model S's come out of warranty this year. 8 year unlimited mile warranties are great until year 9.

Nice car. The visible CF is in the Hardtop (rare), Hood Vanes, and Spoiler (not uncommon).

Phenomenal facility! Wow. Thanks for the tour. Glad to know there are experts out there like Gruber expanding the service available for EV cars.
"Rauchen verboten" 😃 Great Work! Greetings from Bremen, Germany!
That sign is for the battery packs, not the workers :D
Wow, this is a company and people that seem ti know what theyre doing. Too bad other car companies and repair companies arent working at this level.
It’s great that these guy have filled this gap but I wish Tesla would do more of this type or work themselves. Obviously it can be done with a small crew and it says a lot to the 2nd market which keeps their resale values high.

Tesla need to work with companies like this in keeping them supplied with data, firmware and parts.
This was a fantastic video! Well done.
6:02 I don't know what I will do with this information, but I feel like I'm learning a lot from this guy.
Well that was a great tour, thank you.
These guys are awesome! I was tempted to buy a Roadster, but wouldn't consider it without living in Phoenix near these guys.
Gruber might be the best candidate to work for Tesla as a consultant to further improve their products great job guys!!!
He's doing god's work keeping these treasures alive! Thanks for sharing.
I have some acedemic & real world knowledge of electrical & electronics engineering. This workshop & technical leadership are a North Star when related to Tesla. Highly informative!
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing this. It is nice to see inside the industry a bit.

Elon's Roadsters is most likely bricked as well since it hadn't been charged in nearly 2 years and is currently cruising past Mars orbit!
I’ve never been interested in cars, however since EV’s have become the talk, I’ve tried to learn more about them especially Tesla. Picking up my first one, M3 in 2 weeks. Thanks for you videos, Kyle.
🙂
Very Impressive.
Right Business at the right time with the right experts.
Compare this to you local Ford Dealership ?
Good Bye DETROIT.
Fascinating details. Don is intent and soaking it all up.
Very educational. Thanks for sharing Kyle and Gruber.
Great tour of a very interesting facility. To bad they can’t make an aftermarket battery for those roadsters. They are great looking cars.
Looks like an awesome place to work!
Great video! Love the ending plea! :)

Simply amazing, a true asset to the Tesla community
Wow... This is effectively my dream workplace.
Excellent use of 3-D printing and an improvement on the original design that Tesla would’ve implemented today if roadster was still being manufactured

Turns out when you have a $100k car you get genius level service
a damn shame you can't get that level of service - or any at all - from the billionaire founder of the $600 billion company that made them
Very informative ⚡👍⚡
Really cool. The upsale on the blue one though 😂. All very useful things though.
Great video- very informative!

I would reach out to Gruber Motor Company for more specific info on the process
@@OutofSpecMotoring Thanks for the response. I was thinking Gruber would check comments for the video, but maybe not? I'll send them an email.
@@markusstrobl1067 We got your email Markus. We sent over the details. Thanks, Pete
@@petegruber2738 Got the response. Thanks!
@@petegruber2738 can you post the response here :)
Wow, these guys are pros. Know about Tesla hardware almost as much as Tesla engineers probably.
It is 112 degrees in Phoenix sunshine and Pete Gruber wears a tobaggan cap and a hoodie sweatshirt. He’s got ice in his veins.

They were pretty much hand built.

6:40 Do they sell the boards, or do you ship them your MCU, or how does that service work?
For service questions you should reach out to Gruber directly. I'm unsure of how MCU chip logistics works
We offer an MCU repair and upgrade. It requires either the car at our Service Center in Phoenix AZ, or the MCU shipped to us. ev@gruber.com
Any idea of the 2400 Roadster produced by Tesla, how many are still on the road?
Hey, good on you! You got him NOT to wear his sunglasses.
This is amazing! 👍🏼
Gruber is great.
Need this shop on the east coast
Freaking awesome!!!!!

And make it where owner can do certain upgrades like u can with a laptop etc
Great video 👍
They should need to make it where the owner can do their own level 1 recovery
2010 : Can I book a appointment for oil change ?

Man this Video makes me sacred to buy a Tesla.
Wish to see more information on the Model S and X and 3. As well as to cost for the MCU repair.

Like a Tesla who the hell could afford the service
Toyota prius lot more reliable and cost effective
Prius has a tiny Nickel Metal Hydride battery.
