How Did Russia Seize a U.S.-Supplied M2 Bradley in Ukraine

  • The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has seen both sides seizing and repurposing military hardware on multiple occasions. A recent and notable event in this series involves the capture of a U.S.-supplied M2 Bradley Infantry fighting vehicle or IFV by Russian forces in Ukraine. Footage shown on Russian television purportedly portrayed the IFV taken on the front line in Ukraine's Luhansk region, reportedly immobilized by Russian fire and abandoned by its Ukrainian crew.
During the news, the presenter suggested that the seizure of a functional Bradley, one among several dozen supplied by Washington to Ukraine this year, could offer Russian forces insights into its vulnerabilities. This prompts a critical examination of the Bradley's effectiveness in the ongoing conflict and raises questions about the potential insights Russia might gain from this seizure. Consequently, the question arises: should Russia's adversaries, especially the United States, be alarmed by this development?

One very important issue has been overlooked here, the issue of the price of weapons. Give me a lot of money and I'll make good weapons, but for a big war you need a lot of inexpensive and maintainable equipment. Bradley is more than 10 tons heavier than the BMP-3. The BMP-3 can float. The Bradley 25 mm cannon, with good sub-caliber projectiles, is more suitable for destroying lightly armored vehicles than for undermining infantry. The 100mm BMP-3 cannon fires powerful high-explosive shells, and a paired 30mm cannon fights well with lightly armored vehicles. The BMP-3 has much better cross-country terrain, on wet Ukrainian chernozems, which are more difficult than wet clay. Unfortunately, due to the collapse of our defense industry after the collapse of the USSR, armor-piercing feathered projectiles, like those of the 25mm Bradley cannon, were not developed (or rather implemented) for the 30mm cannon. Obviously, this is an unused reserve of our 30mm guns. In general, there should be a lot of technology in a real war, and learning how to use it should be easy! I hope that Ukraine's stocks of equipment will run out soon, and Russian factories will produce it in large quantities. At least the output of military equipment is increasing in Russia every month and there are still reserves.

One thing you forgot is that expensive stuff tend to be more safe for the crew. I know russia doesn't care of their soldiers, it's has been noted since ww1 and mastered in ww2 so they make them fast, cheat and weak. Yes russia produces a shitload of cheap stuff that kills their crews most of the time too. I would take quality over quantity everyday. But you are correct in that russian vehicles are better suited to fight in this kind of territory where land is wet and muddy as they don't sink in nearly as much. NATO vehicles are developed to use mostly for terrain found in central europe and USA and this shows as main battle tanks are not that good in open, muddy fields in Ukraine as they would be in forestry terrain of Europe, which hardens the use of drones. Armored vehicles overall in this senseless invasion has proved to have lived their best times as aerial attacks from drones and missiles eat them day by day from both sides.

As a ex South African defense force Ratel gunner myself the bradly is only a lightly armourd vehicle much like the Ratel and is not invincible, its desighned to quickly transport troops into battle and support them and get them out again and there will be casualties, its called war you know !!!, theres not one single military vehicle i now of that cant be destroyed ever, some just take more punnishment than others deppending on whats used against it, so anything can get a single hit to get destroyed even if its the toughest tank in the world by using more powerfull or the right weapons, what makes a bradly or a ratel so good is its speed ability making for a difficult target as long as it keeps moving and certainly a better option than having troops deployed to battle on foot or with trucks, many soldiers lives have been spared because of these troop carriers so imo they get the job done right ??? ✌

The T-90 was alone in Stepove, without infantry or drones covering/guiding it, contrary to the 3 Bradleys being guided by a drone. The T-90 got hit by a drone first, and the stunned crew then got ambushed.
Mind you the T-90 couldn't return effectively fire due to the constant strafing stunning the crew and the optics/turret ring being broken. The Bradleys just damaged the T-90 which then voluntarily crashes into a tree to jam its spinning broken turret to let the crew out. The T-90 is thus a highly survivable tank, and in a different setting would have most likely taken the W as all odds were stacked against it in this fight.
It then got brown up by a drone

The Bradley, like the M1, the Leopard, the Challenger are combined arms weapons. They are designed for use with air and artillery support with a well trained crews. In Ukraine they have no air support; indifferent artillery support and poorly trained crews. Bradley is a great weapon but very vulnerable without support. In Desert Storm (my war) the Bradley performed very well but it had tons of support.

My father was an RAF fighter pilot, (WWII) he did his OTU, operational training unit on Hurricanes, then flew bomber escort for a period, flying the American Tomahawk, a tachometer, a compass, a fuel gauge, no radio, and very large fuel tanks. He told me that on his last bomber escort operation on Tomahawks out of twelve pilots/aircraft, only two returned, himself and another pilot. They both were moved to the 165 squadrons, flying Supermarine Spitfires with an RR Merlin powerplant, where he remained until the end of the war, accumulating just under 1,000 hours of flight operations from the south coasts of England, too and including over France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Luxemburg, and Norway. Just like the US Bradleys the attrition rate of pilots and their aircraft, was so high that they were not able to replace the aircraft and new pilots fast enough, just like in Ukraine today! 22 01 2024 UK Glory to Ukraine, Godspeed!

There is no doubt that Bradley is capable IFV. But against whom?! Taliban carrier with AK-47, in slippers?! Or some similar wars, in the invasions that the US and NATO carried out on various countries, against small and weak countries and armies with poor and outdated military training and military equipment. Against such countries, Bradley can be effective. In Ukraine, we saw that it is not quite so capable, when for the first time Western military equipment is at war against a serious military power, such as Russia. A direct hit from the T-72, Bradley certainly cannot withstand if it is APFSDS, even when it is the oldest variant of the old Soviet missiles, the kind used by Iraq at one time, and the penetration is about 350 mm of homogeneous steel.Bradley has better armor protection than the BMP-2, but it is much worse than the BMP3, and it is at least 3 times more expensive than the Russian IFV?! The problem with Bradley, like most western military equipment, is poor mobility, lack of agility, poorly solved track suspension not adequate for the terrain in Ukraine, as well as the weight of the vehicles themselves, especially when tanks are out of the question, as soon as the season of mud, later snow and ice begins in Ukraine, western tanks and IFVs can be thrown into the garbage by Ukrainians. Because they cannot, or can be used in limited numbers, in such conditions precisely because of the above-mentioned facts... Also on top of all that, poorly resolved complicated and expensive maintenance , for this type of conflict, overcrowding with, electronics and opto-electronics, which also proved to be very bad when it comes to durability and maintenance...Equipment that often breaks down and requires constant maintenance ... This applies to everything, Western self-propelled howitzers, tanks, IFV ... It really seems to me that this channel has been covered in detail with that topic... That's why the old Soviet or newer Russian towed, and self-propelled howitzers, and tanks than Western, so-called "game changer" tanks, and howitzers... Western military equipment is effective against the Taliban, various rebels... But not exactly in the first real war for them, and against military power such as Russia. Also to make matters worse, Western military equipment is more expensive, not twice but from 5 to 10 times for purchase and maintenance, and in Ukraine, the biggest conflict after World War II, it mostly proved to be bad. To make matters worse, this is the first real war for the US and NATO and their modern military equipment... Which leads to the fact that the military industrial complex of the US and NATO governs the US state first and foremost, and robs its citizens and the army, selling them military equipment that is the same or worse than Russian or, say, Chinese at a price 5 to 10 times higher than what the equipment is really worth?! While promoting in the media, which he also owns, the military industrial complex, as incredible "game changers, which are 100 times better than Russian or Chinese military equipment"?! Well, if someone believed in it until the war in Ukraine, they certainly don't believe in it anymore! Unlike the US, the Russians and Chinese get their military equipment at the most favorable possible prices for their army. Because neither in Russia nor in China, in the political sense, let alone in the media, does the military-industrial complex ask absolutely nothing, let alone set or change the presidents of the state or politicians in the country, as is the case in the US hegemony. But he can only sit in the corner and listen to what the political and military leaders order and do according to their orders.

bradley is an old vehicle so in theory the capture by russia should not concern usa and nato, BUT since they still heavily use it, and the vehicle is currenty in combat against russia the capture of any vehicle should be concerning, because the opposing force can study the vehicle in and out throughfuly and find the best way to destroy them, lowering the effectiveness even more
and it may or may not be true that bmp-3 outclass bradley in almost every aspect even russia should admot bradley is better protected than bmp-3, but its not amphibious like the russian IFV what is limited to a certain weight to keep its buoyancy

The USA and Nato are not worried fron the capture of equipment. Remember how many veichle have been left in Afghanistan ? It is quite easy to buy a Bradley or any Nato veichle there. The problem is to copy them and to bild them . The Nato and Usa veichle are very expendive. That make them uncopiable. A T90 cost about 2 million an Abram 10 million. The Usa has the money . Russia not.

If you send the only dependable skilled people to the front. Then replace them with drunks and lazy people who are not dependable. What do you expect your production to be like? What benefit are they to you and how do you expect to accomplish anything?

That's CIA cope, there's a picture of an entire field of them but they're not merely take out by mines, they're entirely blasted apart and burned, and the proximity of the IFVs are way too close, maybe a few of them but the rest of them were definitely hit with ATGM fire and cooked.
Don't buy the lies of that fat CIA paid queer McBeth.
Also the BMP-T is superior regardless.

There is no doubt that BMP-3 is better. You don't even need inside knowledge to understand this. The firepower isn't even comparable to say the least. Just as it's mobility and ease of use. But most importantly profile of vehicle. When BMP-3 is only 2 meter height, Bradley is a god damn three-meter barn. Bradley was just a better vehicle for Ukraine which was using mostly BMP-1 and BMP-2 at best. Hell, even Marder seemed like a good deal. Or even CV-90 which were also captured by Russia. Bradley is just good enough to be a better version of BMP-2. Although, the upgraded version of BMP-2 can be just as good.

not really between the 2 one was designed for easy to use and can make a lot the other was made for crew survivability and quality, between the 2 BMP is a death trap we see soldiers riding on the top while the Bradleys can be inside which that alone shows us they have more trust in Bradleys than BMPs for crew survivability which is highly wanted due to the fact u can replace equipment not crew.

    • @ImBigFloppa
      @ImBigFloppa 4 месяца назад

And in turn for being so short and light, it has paper thin armor that results in 50 BMG being capable of penetrating the sides and rear from a good distance away, and more importantly, artillery fragments from shells that land just 10 meters from the vehicle being able to penetrate the hull. That in and of itself more than quadruples the area of destruction for an artillery shell when compared to a Bradley that would require a direct hit. You also have zero survivability as having 48 small artillery shells and 500 autocannons in a vehicle with paper thin armor is just a recipe for disaster. You also don't have a thermal imager for the commander at all, and the thermal imager for the gunner is extremely lackluster.
It doesn't matter how fast you can go on asphalt roads and how much firepower you have when in fields where most vehicles would be lucky to reach 40kph, and when that firepower cannot be effectively aimed at a target, and when their pathetic armor makes them susceptible to a strong gust of wind.
