Delicious rye. Well done fellas. Complex flavors. Peppery, minty, spicy, cinnamon. Everything I look for in a rye.
Frey ranch is definitely one of my favorites, they grow all the ingredients on the family farm along with Sierra Nevada in Fallon Nevada.
Copper Fox lived up to its name by the color in the vile and glass. I did not have any sediment. Beautiful pour.
The nose reminded me of banana bread, sweet and nutty. It was nice. I wouldn't add water to this one as it diminished the smell big time and didn't do much for the taste.
The taste had the characteristic rye 'spice' and peppery presence. Very smooth and balanced at 90 proof. The heat is from the rye, not the alcohol. I got dried fruit and the finish reminded me of a caramel apple. The mash bill os 2/3 rye and 1/3 bsrley malted on smoked applewood and cherrywood. There is secondary aging with and Applewood and oak chip infusion. I would have expected apple to be more pronounced but it wasn't. MSRP $40-55. I won't go out of my way to buy this, but if I found it on the low side I might buy a bottle for a mixer. Again, don't add water, drink it neat.
Of the 5 ryes we've tasted, this was my second favorite behind Day 12, Sonoma Distilling Cherrywood smoked rye. Cheers!
Flaviar Black: We thought that it had a note of Spice Cake 😋
Copper fox was an amazing sample. It’s complex yet mellow. The additional notes about sediment for the tasting are greatly appreciated also the woopsy.
I like how his box isn’t partially ripped due to the card board.
Copper Fox "Rye". This is one of those whiskeys that requires buyers to be informed regarding what they are getting into. This is not a true Straight Rye Whiskey but rather one that one uses "progressive infusions of toasted apple wood and oak chips" according to their website. Hmm. Aka, they tried to artificially age it faster than the normal process of just letting spirit age in a barrel the tried and true way.
Nose: Charcoal, soot, dirt, burnt roasted apple.
Palate: Soot, burnt roast peanuts, burnt fruit. With an hour in the glass and a little water I got cinnamon, stewed pears and burnt toffee in the nose and palate.
Finish: The soot, charcoal and burnt apple notes really linger along with some heavy ash. This is an interesting whiskey but I think they went a little overboard with the artificial aging which caused the earthy charcoal notes to dominate the entire experience which might be off putting to some people. I'd love to try something from this distillery that was aged a bit longer and without this newfangled process they are using.
This would probably make one heck of a cocktail as it would be like getting a free cigar with your drink. 6/10. Cheers!
Still waiting for Flaviar service to figure out how to get code for free membership code to work. Doesn't bode well for me spending more money if they struggle with something simple.
Exactly. I tried following up multiple times with no response. I’m not inclined to spend additional money with them now. They have absolutely no customer service.
I had similar issues, but a direct email to their support was answered within a day and it only took two email exchanges to get it done. I am surprised to hear you have not had a reply. But I also agree this company has some growing pains and it would be obviously preferable if things just worked as advertised rather than had to be fixed.
@@Skallagrim9I have been sending emails for 2 weeks. No response. Not sure what there issues are but I wouldn’t give them another cent. Terrible customer service
The copper fox is interesting. It's got a strange nose to it, but that may be the pepper, although I think I'm also smelling cut grass. It's complex but at the same time still clearly rye.
We thought Fall Leaves on the nose. 🍂
Definitely got grass or leaves
Copper Fox has a lot of good ones.
Decent, but forgettable, Good rye whisky and would purchase if the price was right. But wouldnt go out of my way for it
