This is the very first time I have experienced the Flaviar Advent Calendar . I am an old guy - 68 yo . I still like Stella and Harp and Guiness and Pacifico more than any IPA , and Macallan my fav Scotch and Wild Turkey my fav bourbon, so this is the baseline for me . I have very much enjoyed the variety of whiskeys that I have experienced so far . Not all of them have been my favorites , but that is what I expected. This journey has opened my mind and my taste to the many whiskeys that are out there . I have the Amber Kingdom calendar and I have no issue at all with the choice of whiskeys - I have really liked most of them. I look forward to my daily tastings ( 1 benefit of being retired without work issues etc ) . Overall I am very happy my son in law gave me this amazing gift and I will pass this on for sure . I think Lui - you do a great job and I enjoy comparing my thoughts to yours on what we are tasting . My 1 suggestion with the tastings would be that maybe add another 20 - 30 seconds to present a brief history of the distillery that produced the dram of the day . That has been done a few times , but in my view , I would like that every time . I know I can “ Google” it which I have done , but would be nice to just hear it . Overall - a great job and much appreciated .

Black Box: delicious bourbon that hides the proof well. Oakley caramelly goodness. This one is in my top 3 so far

    #19 Featherbone Bourbon.
Nose: Butterscotch, canned mandarin orange, allspice, roasted corn and intense clove.
Palate: All of the above plus dried Rainier cherries. The flavors are all wonderfully in sync and there is nothing off-putting.
Finish: Extremely long - very oily and coats the tongue. Those wonderful flavors linger a very long time giving you a deep and satisfying finish. This has a mashbill of 70% corn, 25% wheat and 5% rye. This is my favorite so far - although I happen to love high corn bourbons, especially with wheat. Sipping it neat or with a little water works well either way. Truly excellent although the price tag of $67 before tax is a bit steep as there are many comparable bourbons out there for a lot less. I'd be more comfortable paying $40-50 for this. Due to that I'm giving it an 8/10 overall, although on quality alone it is a 9/10 in my book.

I've been to the OG Journeyman location in Michigan. I don't recall sampling this cask strength bit I enjoyed my visit. They've expanded since then and have a larger operation operation in Northern Indiana as I understand it. They distill everything from vodka and white dog to gin, rum and cask strength bourbon.
This was ok. The nose wasn't that expressive for a cask strength bottle. It might be too boozy. It makes me want to revisit the standard Featherbone bottle as it may be more balanced.
Water didn't improve the nose, but it did enhance the subordinate flavors on the taste. Fruit spice, pepper were still dominant, but there was a hint of tobacco and earthiness.
This is a boutique whiskey. $66 on Flaviar is not good roi in my opinion. I might pay that at the distillery. If I can find it in the retail world at a cheaper price, I might consider buying a bottle, but that is the challenge of craft distillery offerings, they are most alluring at the location.
Anyway, this was fine. I wasn't blown away by it, but it does have me wanting to pan plan another trip to that area of Michigan and a visit to Valparaiso on the way there or back. (I live in the Indianapolis area). Cheers!

Generally i found Bourbons too sweet for my tastes. This Journeyman I found sweet, especially on the nose, but not overly so. The 3 drops of water had no major effect, but did bring out hints of more complex spiciness. The same held for the taste. The alcohol bite was noticeable, but contained. The sweetness was prominent, but the mouth feel was clean and the linger was once again those more spicy and complex flavors. This hardly made me a bourbon fan, but it did show that a bourbon can be not too sweet. Enjoyed but not converted. 7

'Look at Taiwan making whiskey' was low rent. Green box participants and that distillery deserve better from the tasting sherpa.
