I really appreciate this tutorial! Most beginner tutorials on landscapes, which is cool, but I enjoy cartooning, so it’s great to find tutorials like this one!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by my channel!
Reminds me of the illustration style of A. A. Milnes, Winnie the Pooh, you can almost envision Christopher Robin interacting with his Pooh bear. Great job on the tutorial too!
Aw thank you!
We love how this came out, like a classic children's book illustration! Fiber-tipped, pigmented ink markers really have come a long way. There was a time when only a technical pen or dip pen could produce waterproof line art like this, but now artists can use India-style ink with pens like these to create sensitive, varied contours and hatching that stays put under watercolor!
It is so helpful that you keep showing the original photo. It is so much easier to follow along when you know where you're going in the broader sense. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, I find the original photo helpful, too
Thank you for this nice step-by-step tutorial!
My pleasure!
Oh my heart is melting, that is truly adorable 👦🏻 🧸 😭
This darling scene was so much fun to watch come together. I loved every step. You covered so many techniques and accompanied with your explanations, this was a fantastic tutorial! Well done! I love the leaving of the white paper for where the sun hits. Just perfect.
I'm so glad!
Great tutorial. I have been doing line and wash for a long time and never thought about crosshatching for shading. I have done it in my sketches for years and somehow it never occurred to me to use it with watercolor. Love your work and thank you.
Thanks so much Emily. This was fantastic instruction. Short and sweet with a LOT of valuable painter's wisdom. I think I'll use it help teach my young nephew! 😊
What a sweet idea!
Simply gorgeous looking line & wash illustration. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video!
Your tutorials are amazing , so easy to follow. Thank you Emily
You're so welcome!
Something about line and wash I love. Reminds me of early Ladybird books I used to read at school in the UK.
Very helpful, many thanks
I love that! It does have that vintage look, I think!

A superb painting and tutorial! I always wonder how much linework one should do before painting. Appreciated hearing your thoughts while you sketch and paint!

I love doing line and wash art (but I haven't done it in * forever* ! I love the children's storybook look with this piece
Love it! I did a 3x5 of this (my favorite size to paint) and it looks great! I may do a larger version with more detail... use Gel Pens for the stitching on the jeans, etc.
Love, Love, Love!!! Excited to try this. So adorable!

Thanks and welcome!
Absolutely loving all your tutorials, Emily !
Your style of teaching and the way you talk us through the process is so very helpful and you make it easy to assimilate and understand.
I really learnt so much from you today watching this…..with so many different aspects of line and wash and cross hatching …it just seems to have come together for me with your explanations.
I recently watched your collaboration with Steve Mitchell ( MOW), when you both did a different tree…it was brilliant and I loved it….such fun watching you both chat and have fun…scary tree and petite tree I think it was.
Thank you once again 🤗💕🤗
Thank you so much for the kind comment and for watching my videos!
Thank you!!!
Hullo Emily, thank you for sharing this lovely tutorial with us! You give quality instructions that are so easy to follow and succeed with our own paintings! I like the Accurit permanent ink fine line pens from Jerry’s Artarama, the red ones! I tried to use the blue barrel pens but the red ones are best for watercolor. I thought that your bear was adorable and I was just so taken with your attitude towards not including details that we can not see! This is so important for getting the real feel without going overboard with details and overworking the subject. So wonderfully done! Thank you.
Aw I appreciate that so much! Thanks for your nice comments!
I loved that, thank you. Xx
I want to do that!
So cute! It's my next project. Thank you!
Very cute!
Love, love it. Thank you❤
My pleasure!
I really enjoyed this! I have arthritis in my hands, so I find it difficult to be VERY precise. This is enjoyable, and I did produce a nice picture. Many thanks!
Lovely tutorial ❤
Lovely, thanks 😊
Nice
I'm a first-time viewer. I really enjoyed this tutorial. I am challenged by drawing however as I'm legally blind and need a very dark, thick line to even begin to see where the line is located. Do you have any suggestions on how to work on drawing using dark, thick lines from the start? Currently, I just paint an object and add ink in after it's dry. I'm just learning to paint.
I looked you up after seeing your name on an uptrek painting trip. I'm glad I looked you up!
Superb!
Emily, you have wonderful tutorials! Do you allow people to sell artwork they have created while watching your tutorials? Thanks for any info.
YES! Go for it!
@@EmilyOlsonArt Thanks so much!

Do you have any more pen and wash videos?
What pencil is it that you use?
So it’s 6 months after your video. Can you update the links? I want to find something like the 5x7 paper block.
