This is the game that really had me understanding the soriku ship, i mean, between the dual wielding of a giant rainbow keyblade and their hearts singing a duet together, i don't see how you can avoid it. I never watched the Three Musketeers movie as a kid so I kind of lost the plot around the point where Donald learns offscreen that Pete is evil and Goofy disappears. I looked it up and it's pretty nuts: Pete sends his lackeys after Donald and Goofy, Donald is captured and put in a guillotine while Goofy is going to be drowned in a river. Donald escapes, while Goofy and his attacker (Clarabelle Cow) fall in love and she lets him go. Sounds like a heck of a film

I remember before watching it I was just a casual shipper in that I shipped them, but in a "yeah, they're great but I'm crazy, that would never happen", then I watched it, and suddenly I was like "OH MY GOD IT'S REAL" and became more obsessed. It's not just a ship now, it's a fight, and every new piece of evidence, every new Disney couple parallel discovered is an absolute joy.
this is definitely a "read the plot summary after you finish it" kind of game lol happy that at least you enjoyed all the soriku stuff at the end lol, it's a good time whether you understood the whole plot or not

Ehy you're back! Time for our scheduled analysis and explanation for stuff you may have not understood. Starting with the simple thing, in symphony of sorcery we learn that dearly beloved is actually a diegetic song in the story, and its the song sora and riku's hearts sing when in tune. After this world, they unlock the ability to connect their hearts to create the Gayblade, a combined keyblade we dont know much about but it is extremely filled with symbolism and details, like how when combined the separated keychains turn into a braided paopu fruit charm. Now for the more complex stuff, starting with the reveal that riku dove into Sora's dream/heart since the start of the game without even realizing out of sheer will to protect him and became a dream eater because of it. This happened at the start of the game right after the small prologue on destiny islands. Since then, sora and riku have been separated, Sora exploring the actual dreams of the sleeping worlds, while Riku has been visiting the dream world created by sora and his subconscious. This is where the distance part of the title comes from, as the directors said, where sora and Riku's hearts are able to close said distance and impact each other regardless. The game is basically written to be kinda confusing through it until you reach this reveal, and after you know thats whats going on everything starts to click much better into place, and all the little hints start to click with each other. For example, all the sora worlds stick much closer to the story of the movies, while Riku's are able to stray from the script because thats a recreation of the world from Sora's heart, which directly influenced the worlds and even the characters. This is what Joshua was actually deducing and understood when brainstorming with Riku at the start of this video. For example, the notre dame world ended pretty much like the movie, with sora feeling worried about quasimodo being left being. In Riku's version, the characters dont separate, and esmeralda reassures Riku with his situation. Another example, sora visited Pinocchio's sleeping world, but Riku instead visited monstro from kh1, since seeing pinocchio reminded sora of those events. Here, the kh1 events are repeating, but now Riku can do better and saves pinocchio from a conjured dream version of himself. This dream riku, which doesnt speak, later returns in the final world as it grew stronger and stronger and became the cool looking pink and black coat nightmare you fight as Riku, where the camera makes sure to show back to back the dream eater and nightmare sygils riku and this boss have on their back (the boss has also Riku's battle animations). So it becomes a really cool redemption for riku, to beat and destroy the literal nightmare created from Sora's fear from kh1 of Riku leaving him and turning into the darkness again (which is also what caused sora to fall asleep, with young xehanort mirroring kh1 riku holding his hand to him) After that, we have the very cool declarations of devotion Riku makes to sora before fighting ansem. After the Battle, the cum Guardian holds his hand over to Riku, which in turn shows him the keyblade which makes me vanish, which is important for later so keep it in mind. Riku then says "strength to protect what matters". That was Riku's motto to terra in BBS, but it's actually mistranslated. He is actually saying, "strength to protect what's precious". His motto just evolved to match his conviction, and it's going to happen again into its final form soon. Now for the trippy part. Basically, the bad guys have hijacked the exam so they could lead sora to their world with the good guys being none the wiser. It would have worked, if it wasnt for riku meddling and doing his unexplainable act (of love) at the start of the game, which young xehanort at the start also is confused by, and he reiterates how riku is immune to all their tricks now in this video too, its really cool. The bad guys so marked sora with the x to keep track of him, and at the end, after he managed to get into the real world, they brought him back asleep. The whole trippy sequence is trippy because its meant to act as a nightmare/dream sequence, where sora is led in layer and layer deep of dreams by using all the tragedy and emotions of the other characters against him to the point he wont be able to wake up on his own and be used for the organization, while we can hear how Riku tries to wake him up, we can hear his voice and at one point he tries to show sora a memory of when the tow of them had met aqua, as xigbar confirms it was riku. We also get the reveal that the nobodies could and did grow hearts by connecting with other people and were manipulated and gaslighted into not believing it was possible. Sora manages to call Riku's name before being forced at the end into a deep cursed sleep (as a fun trivia, what he's thinking in the novel is "Sora could sense darkness enveloping his body. "What's happening to me...? Am I falling...falling into darkness... again...?" "Riku..." Finally, Sora called out to his dear friend. Riku had always come to save him. "One more time... Riku. I'm sorry, Riku. I..." ), but he is protected by ventus' armor, and a purple light shines above him and his station. Specifically, that is Riku's station's light, watching over him, because Riku has heard sora calling his name and is coming to save him (he says sora called him before going into Sora's heart at the end to wake him up). The reason the armor and the light are important is because they are a sleeping beauty omage. The armor comes from the oldest version of the story, specifically the norse version of Brunhilde and Sigurd, where the lady cursed to sleep was also cursed into a armor growing into her skin (Sigurd and a lot of other Norse characters have since been made into KH characters), while the light coming over the sleeping person is present in the Disney movie with similar implications to Riku coming to save and wake up sora. Of course we then get the very sweet scene of Riku preparing to entering Sora's heart again, with dearly beloved again. We then see him dropping into his heart, with all Sora's most important memories passing by, most of which are about Riku, and then him. Riku now has to fight to free sora from his armor cursing him to sleep, like Sigurd had to do. When this happens, this is what Riku thinks about in the novel. "I won't hold back, and I won't underestimate you. I'll give everything I have to set you free. I was always jealous of you, Sora. I used to feel it all the time, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't still. I believed that feeling was darkness, but now I know it's not. The truth is, it gave me strength, and so did having someone to challenge me. Light and darkness are perfect complements to each other- the shadows are always greatest next to the light, and light shines out brightest in the dark. I know what that means now, truly. When those dark feelings come over you, only your heart can decide whether to let them sink deeper into the darkness or to bring them out into the light of the sun. Accepting both is what it means to have a heart. It's what gives us strength. Even wanting to protect those you care about is a form of pride, in a way. I don't think anyone can honestly say it's not. Same with wanting to be stronger. Joy and sorrow, anger and hatred-whether those feelings become your light or your darkness is for you to decide. The strength of your heart is what allows you to choose. That's why I choose to let the light shine onto my own darkness. And Sora, that light is you."
After that absolutely jaw dropping quote, Riku has to answer questions. There are actually canonical correct questions that unlock a secret movie at the end, but they were all mistranslated which ruins the important meaning of this scene. All the right answers have the word precious in them, which in turns make it so his answers are "What are you so afraid of?" "Losing what's precious to me" "What do you care about more than anything else?" "My precious best friend" "Riku, what do you wish?" "To recover what's precious to me" Aka, Sora. This declaration was even the key to awake sora for good too. After this moment, his motto becomes it's true final version of it, which is "strenght to protect my precious person". He says it in kh3, but it was once again mistranslated, even when they use other Disney couples who say it word by word 5 minutes before, which is translated as person i love most" in english instead to make it clear it's the same situation as theirs. The ultimania confirms this, by saying that "A young Riku stated his wish: "I want to become strong enough to protect the things that matter." Roughly 10 years later, after many twists and turns, he has finally obtained the strength to protect the person who matters." Because of this declaration and growth, as Nomura even said so, Riku is the one the narrative grants the title of keyblade master

The worlds are dreamed by two people who are Sora and Riku but some of the worlds are not there's. it belongs to others like mickey considering is the past and future that's why you can see different versions of mickey. all those versions are mickey's past memories. so, if some worlds are locked mickey can't remember his past.
As a person who has spent way too much time thinking about the plot of Kingdom Hearts I can tell you, yeah this game is hard to follow. I get the important stuff but the time travel, dreams, dreams within dreams, time travel within dreams within dreams... I always come away from this game like, okay I don't fully understand everything that literally happened but emotionally I'm on board with it haha
