I had the exact same reaction you did haha. "that's weird, mickey already had a keyblade like that in KH1. also it sounds like the plot of KH1 is happening again??? what a weird thing to happen after dream drop distance. hey wait a minute why is riku so small"
Whoo! Almost caught up, dang. When I started KH3 and headed to the olympus coliseum, I was exasperated because it was in every. Single. Game. Let Hercules rest! But KH3 breathed new life into that world and it turned out to be one of my favorites in the game. I hope you enjoy it too!
So, you asked about the time travel stuff, which i didnt particularly cover in the comments i left on the ddd video, because for semplicity's sake, knowing how it works doesnt really matter for the full story understanding besides "the bad guys are all back for the epic final kh3 showdown". That is the actual thing that matters, so nothing too hard to understand. But just to be thorough since you were curious and asked, the base time travel rule is that only a heart, so basically a ghost/soul can time travel, the body cant do it typically, and the heart can go to times when the heart already existed in the first place. So, say, if i were to time travel, i can only go as far as my birth or my death, i cant go before or after that if im not already there in some way in the natural time flow. More on thread
This is explained behind the scenes, but young xehanort has been hopping to various time periods in order to find the people chosen to be in the true organization, and has been extracting their hearts to send them into the future. We see him do it in bbs, where he is the final final secret boss of that game, for example. The hearts will go to the future, where they will join the organization, thanks to a trick that is revealed in kh3 to allow that, and then go back to the past with no memory they time travelled and continue the normal story as we played it. Its basically borrowing them for the finale in kh3 and then putting them back. This includes Xemnas and Ansem for example. As for the actual master xehanort and Terra, once Xemnas and Ansem were defeated, as for the rule that when a nobody and a heartless is defeated, the original person is reconstructed, this actually brought back both old man master xehanort and terra as normal people. Thats the master xehanort we see at the end of ddd. As for Vanitas, the one moment we see him inside the church in Sora's story in ddd is not a time travelling Vanitas. If you see the scene again, you can see Vanitas just appear out of nowhere just for a second to say a line, and vanitas is sorta trasparent/has weird graphics effects going on over him. Its likely meant to be just be a allucination Sora sees just for a second, because of what young xehanort is saying. He is talking about Sora's heart being a prison for ventus, xion, roxas... And vanitas too, since he is inside ventus. So we see Vanitas appear here to make fun/reprehend sora about this fact. About the fact you read on reddit about needing assistance or whatnot, that is a very small exception to the normal time travel rule, and its a way for you to time travel while also keeping your body, which only people who have had their hearts separated from their bodies in their lifetime can do, which Nomura explained in an interview about ddd. Thats how young xehanort has been time hopping to recruit all the new members, and how sora and Riku time travelled at the very start of ddd to when the destiny islands were going to be destroyed in kh1, in the tutorial prologue of that game.
"But they're just basic Heartless, Aqua. They're just a basic B****" In the realm of Darkness? Well yes, but actually no. Also, have you already played and finished Kh3 or more? I'm not sure where you are in real time.
