Great series.
Given they are limited in low bass, it would be interesting to hear how they sound with subs filling in the missing register. Might change them completely.

Maybe a decent pair of stands. On a stand-mount speaker, the stands play a role as important as the partnering electronics.
Also they probably would've benefited from being closer to the front wall, which would've helped in the bass department.

Excellent review Jay. As far as future reviews of the more affordable speakers etc I think it a great way to mix things up once in awhile still keeping the main focus on the ultra high-end.

Jay, a nice and balanced review. I agree with your "cons" re this speaker, especially the "made in China". That said, I do feel it's worthy of an audition. He's insulted Andrew Jones by questioning the speaker's construction, just because it's made in China. It's not in his best interests to be hiring idiots to build speakers for him. US labor has gotten too expensive for me for largely low skill physical work. Speaker stand comment was unnecessary as well, there are detailed instructions about placement in the manual (had he read it?). Largely, a stand is a stand, as long as it's stable (but there's no end of people wasting their money on stands that are $500 and up, that are, "matched to that speaker"). This one sounds the best with class A? Tube amps will tend to sound more warm and organic with most any speaker. He's talking about what he prefers. Cable rolling is mostly audiophoolery. "This speaker can get bright": How do I know that it's not his room? Or that the mastering engineer had intended for the recording to sound bright? FR curve is now available on Stereophile. Amp matching people spend too much time on as well; first and foremost, people should be checking the impedance curves of their speakers and whether or not there's enough current available. It must make some feel good about themselves to have gone through $10k or more of them, and after having reminded me that I can't afford them, found the "perfect match for that speaker". "Nobody does it like he does". Guttenberg, and Butterworth, who are more modest? "Some of you people may not know how to do that"? I'm not one of them. Speaker only goes down to 40 Hz? Few speakers under 50 lbs do. "It goes up to 30 kHz". I couldn't hear above 18 kHz when I was a teenager, and there's little information in the recording above a 10 kHz except percussion overtones. As for the review suggestions, I think you need to give it a rest: these people are constantly bombarded with "why don't you get 'xyz' speaker and review and compare them" requests. It's somebody else's money. Even if he did review all three of them, there's no guarantee that they would sound the same in your room. Guttenberg had reviewed the two you had mentioned already.

I agree with your concerns about this speaker, particularly the 'made in China' issue. However, some of the best audio equipment on the market today-Thieaudio, Hifiman headphones, Holo May Kitsune DAC, Topping, and countless others-is made in China. In fact, half of the gear you have at home likely comes from there. Jay may have top-tier products, but his reluctance to discuss high-quality, affordable speakers stems from a conflict of interest-he's in the business of selling high-end gear. Promoting a $3-5K speaker, like Mofi or some others ( I wish he can test a Tekton Design Ulfberht) that rivals his offerings doesn't benefit his bottom line. Jay is not primarily an audio critic; he's a salesman first and foremost. And that's fine-there's nothing wrong with that. Cheers for Jay.
I enjoyed this review. I was given a good understanding of the MoFi 10 Loudspeaker and what to expect from it.
Yes, please continue to review more affordable gear but the original ultra-high fidelity man should stay on mission. Jay, you are doing things that I have not experienced elsewhere, and your listening room is filled with wonderful, reference level components. Yeah, I can't afford the best gear but it was the passion and desire for great sounding music that got me into this hobby. Please continue to offer these excellent presentations, and thank you for everything.

I've been one of your subscribers for quite awhile and I really enjoy your site so know that I appreciate your efforts and your postings.
I'm glad you gave this speaker a chance and were objective about the pros and cons. I think by doing that you changed your mind a little and it shows you have an open mind and willing to learn by doing, experimenting, and not prejudging.
As for it being made in China well my underwear is made in China. What can I say? When I buy something I like at first and then don't like I have to figure out why I don't like it or even if it is something I don't even own, I want to know why. For example, back around 1970 I bought Bose 901 and liked them then. They went back in their boxes and sat around for decades. Then in the 1990s I took them out and didn't like them. Being an engineer I wanted to figure out what was wrong with them and if there was anything I could do about it. My first half hearted effort was a total failure. Then in 2004 I made a serious effort, figured it out, reengineered it, and now it's a whole different thing. But I haven't listened to it in 5 years. I also haven't watched TV in 5 years.
Now there is something that is going to make people mad or just laugh instead I hope. I'll start with cars, I know you love fast cars. If it's not a V8 engine it's not really American. I never bought a car for myself that didn't have a V8. I'm driving one now I bought for my sister with a 6 cylinder 3.5 270 hp engine and it is fast. It's also fun to drive. Not American though. Now about speakers. To be truly American it must have a 12" woofer. Anything less, well you know our culture is going to hell in a handbasket and that's just an example. I really don't like what this industry calls "bookshelf" speakers. I call them shoebox speakers. This speaker is a bookshelf speaker. But those tiny tykes that cost thousands... blah. I bought a really nice pair of them for 20 dollars at a garage sale. I use them as part of my bedside radio. They look really nice and sound good for what they are. I definitely got my 20 dollars worth.
Now I just saw this yesterday. It's also a 10" dual concentric system that costs $6000 a pair.

I'm a one ripple man. I don't buy ported speakers either, at least not for real money. You said yourself that the sealed Magico S7 had the deepest bass you have heard in your room. I was not surprised. I explained why in a prior posting.
BTW original Bose 901 and series II were sealed acoustic suspension systems badly executed. Starting with series 3 they were ported. I think they might be transmission line enclosures. This changed the money equation. Original and series II cost $500 and needed a $1500 amplifier. Series III and above cost $1500 and needed a $500 amplifier. The sacrifice was the lowest octave. Great marketing decision. It would take at least 3 to 4 pairs of the sealed design to equal my Teledyne AR9s in deep bass loudness but they can go very deep when you add another 12 db of boost at 30 hz meaning you need 600 to 1000 watts per channel. They can only handle 270 so the ideal match for 4 pairs in parallel is the Crown 2505 drive core II with a 2 ohm load. The tweeter array I designed requires a separate amplifier. I swear the treble is the hardest part. Get that wrong and nothing else matters. That's what took me four years to get right.
ADD ON: When you review equipment that people can actually afford; it's best. Who wants to read reviews of equipment they can't get because of price? I think you could cater to both by reviewing expensive and not so expensive stuff. A lot of adrenaline reading a review of something you could actually go out and buy. No adrenaline or excitement seeing a review of something you could never afford. Don't ever think that you can't get great sound unless you're rich. Some big spenders go into someone's home, listen to what they've assembled, shake their head in disbelief at how good it sounds, and think "What have I done?" Educate yourself to things like synergy, setup, tweaks, cables, room acoustics and experiment and be creative. The sky is the limit, no matter if you are wealthy or not.

@@ToddElsasser So, what is Jay trying to do? Having listened to the review, his cons were, 1, no stands, 2, made in China, 3, little behind head soundstage. OK, 1, yep, it would be nice it they had made those, does it effect the sound? 2, If made elsewhere, double the price, nothing to Jay, but important to others. 3, how many hours did they have on them? Speakers will sound very different after 200 hrs of break in. Should he know that?

I agree 100%... Pretty much everything you said! They can get bright with the wrong equipment. I have tested with the following equipment with excellent results. Pass XA30.8, XA60.8, Schiit Vidar paired with a Schiit Freya +, PS Audio signature and Primaluna 300. I have s sub connected but only fills in from 23-45hz . I never felt the need to add a sub for anything above 45hz. Tested with a few other pre's and amps on loan that had a forward, neutral or not as smooth sound with mixed results. Without the use of smoother equipment regardless of price or class it presents a good amount of grain in the upper mids and highs. Equipment matching is so unbelievably crucial with these! But the end result of the proper synergy between the electronics and the Sourcepoints can be really enjoyable! They image well, give spot on instrument separation and detail within the boundary of the speakers, great center and height. Width is meh, but hey you can't have it all.

@@jaysaudiolab Hopefully in 2 weeks I'm going to put them up against 2x Fyne speakers with a similar design. A set of F500SP lower cost than the Mofi's and the higher end ladder F700 and see how they stack up. Wish I had access to some of your amps lol!
Thanks Jay..very thorough review. I would say re the stands, you need much much better stands for this size of speaker. They are on a wobbly tower with your current stands. I would think a Harbeth type of stand would secure it far better and improve performance. Thanks again for the review!

There are many Tekton Design towers in this price range.
Heard these at axpona and found the equipment behind them made a huge difference. They sounded pretty awful in the one room but then heard them with the geshelli integrated and they really sounded amazing.
That's the problem with Andrew Jones, way too finicky . His self promotion is really cheesy too

One way to get less highs is to tow the speakers up a bit. Some speakers have stands that do it.

Please have more reviews on electronics, speakers, and others (less expensive), which price ranges from 3k-25k because I think it might be a lot of more fun for many of us if we discover some beautiful sound products or a "killer" with less or a lot less expensive. Do you know what would be interesting? Take a high-end speaker like Sonus Faber or Focal and compare the ultra high-end to the entry-level model and see what you get and what technology trickles down.

You certainly provide a clear idea of what this speaker is all about. I can say without a doubt that the
potential for this speaker to be bright is a huge concern for me although low level listening is my
preference. I am a new subscriber and understand that you specialize in ultra high end but if you
are going to go forward with reviewing speakers in the mid-fi range I'd be really interested in your take.
Personally I am quite interested in purchasing the ATC SCM 11. Made in the UK with their own in house
drivers and tweeters. My cup of tea - so to speak. You mention that the speaker herein is light, well,
easy for you to say: with those arms you could tow in a couple of Ford F150s and not break a sweat.
Great, comprehensive overview!.... 2 observations: You stated that it doesn't give you the wow factor 'bubble' that other, more expensive speakers give you. But isn't that a given? I don't understand the point of comparing them to $15,000 or more speakers. I think what most people want to hear is how it compares to other speakers around the same price point. I don't recall you mentioning any. Also, you said you had to agree with other reviewers that the Sourcepoint tends to be bright(which is good to know). You also added that they "didn't lie." Isn't being an audiophile a very subjective venture? I mean, a reviewer either thinks it sounds bright or it doesn't. Why would they lie about their opinion? Just because someone has a different take doesn't mean their lying. Anyway, great info as usual!

Concentric Drivers have One serious advantage and that is Time Arrival of the Sound to ears and that aids in creating a Stable Image! I have known this since the Early 80's in Tannoy speakers and Later in Kef speakers! Jay, Thanks for your Honesty and your Perspective on these Speakers! 💪
If only these speakers did not have the limited dynamics, curtailed bandwidth, serious colorations, and gross audible distortions on complex passages especially at his playing volume. Just too much beaming bite and to many unacceptable compromises even at sub 4k a pair. Imo Worth $1300.00 to $1600.00 max to a limited audience. Was painful to hear some of the presentations on All my ultra high end systems.

What a pleasant surprise! I absolutely thought that you were gonna be quite critical of these speakers. Turns out, you gave a fair, balanced, and overall positive review! So again, pleasant surprise, and hats off to you!
Switching gears slightly, Jay, I've seen a few people share that they have no interest in you reviewing less expensive speakers. And I know you are primarily interested in the high end. Cool. But I think you would agree that reviewing a speaker like this didn't hurt you, your brand, or even your fan base in any way. If anything, it probably gained you more followers, a wider audience, and respect for switching it up, and perhaps giving those who can't afford a luxury speaker a more attainable speaker to consider. Having said that, I would like to encourage you to continue reviewing more attainable speakers. Maybe once a quarter, you can review something a little less expensive. I think that will help to show that you are versatile, that you care about the "common man" who can't afford a luxury speaker, all while still mainly targeting your core high end base.

It can get bright because it IS a bright speaker. A rising on axis response coupled with a wide dispersion pattern ensures a bright presentation.

Hi Jay, for me I would like to try Open Baffle and Magnepan LRS+ speakers. With ALL the Sourcepoint 10 reviews, it comes to Room Size, placement of room furniture and Hardware too power is its issue. Great Work and keep it honest.
I have the LRS ,,,,,, for the money they are amazing .... if you have a powerful amp and room to pull them 3 foot away form the back wall you can buy without worry
@jaysaudiolab You mention the speaker doesn't present the 3rd dimension. Can you share a few examples of speakers that do present this 3rd dimension?
Asking a 10” woofer to cross over around 2khz means it will certainly be into cone breakup territory in the upper midrange. That is your source of brightness at higher volumes. It also will blur complex music.
All I want to know is if Clive Davis uses $600,000 worth of electronics? The whole thing seems very silly. I know the answer and the answer is no, just because something cost so much doesn't make it any better than $30,000 worth of electronics. I like the channel but stop bragging, there's nothing to brag about spending $600,000 worth of electronics when $30,000 would have gotten you the same position. People throw these numbers around but I'd rather buy two homes than some electronics that people from Boulder are selling you at an astronomical cost that's not even necessary! I just showed this to somebody who could literally by the freaking company easily and they thought the whole thing was nonsense! Again, $600,000 in electronics think how silly that is even if you won Powerball it's ridiculous.🙄 Not even considering that $600,000 in electronics in six years is going to be worth maybe a hundred thousand Maybe!🤯 And I would bet using blind testing using Electronics from $30,000 up to the $600,000 electronics that you speak of no one could even tell the difference. And if they could tell the difference they probably picked the cheaper stuff. It's been proven time and time and time again. It's just like wine that I'm very familiar with as I'm drinking it right now. As I retired at age 36 because I don't buy $600,000 worth of electronics!🤑 What wine is worth $3,000 versus a nice bottle for $25. Even the producers of fine wine know it's a rip-off. That sure doesn't mean they don't sell it!🤯 Now a $600,000 home theater room that I could at least understand with most sensible people.🤔🤫🤐

I would like to participate in blind listening test to see if I could pick out the $60k speakers vs speakers under $2k. Bias plays a big part knowing a speaker is $600 a pair vs $60k.
Blind tests, would wreak havoc on this industry!
If you can't reliably tell the difference between $60k speakers and $2k speakers, you are either deaf or this hobby isn't for you. Stick to $10 bluetooth speakers, that's as good as it gets for you.
@@meesmo4 I believe adaboy4z was trying to make a point. Well made speakers can hold there own, if not surpass very expensive speakers. The law of diminishing returns based on price, is real in this industry.
@popo9 Yes I own several bluetooth speakers and they serve a purpose. My main system is budget consisting of Paradigm Titan V6 and kef Q150 speakers. Yamaha R-N803 reciever, Marantz CD and Marantz tape player.
@@meesmo4 I like expensive gear but I agree with the guy. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 bookshelves, a well placed sub, and a minidsp can give a perfect presentation for a set listening position. Topping makes better measuring dacs than boulder for sure. Regarding electronics, design matters more than the quality of individual parts. I will continue to enjoy McIntosh over inexpensive but better measuring Topping because I think the looks and feel is worth more than a bit of performance. At least I'm cognitive of my preferences.

Other than the clickbait title, this was a pretty decent review! A concentric driver is actually two (concentrically aligned) drivers though; your description of concentric more closely describes a full-range driver.
You might check out Erin’s Audio Corner review of the little brother of these. He covers why these can sound bright. Your intuition is correct; you want to toe these out. Because of some inherent behaviors of concentric drivers, they usually sound their best when toed out into the room.

So I assume you dont get a glimpse of the ultra high end from this speaker regardless of electronics...I thought the B&W 805D4 which sounded really good and maybe could do the job of sounding like an ultra high end speaker but then its also expensive at USD 8500, tsk...I believe Magnepan would fit the audiophile budget option as it does some things that are on the level of the ultra high end speakers and maybe the Goldenear BRX at an even cheaper price than the Mofi speakers - these are great speakers specially at their price points. Jay - It's Craig from Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity. We had similar results in listening to these speakers. I also had the chance to review the DALI Oberon 9 - a tower with two 9 inch woofers, a seven in midrange and a 1.1 inch dome tweeter. They sell for $3000 per pair. They have close to a half octave of additional bass extension and don't require stands. While they are built in China, DALI owns the manufacturing and does all their own QC. They are a much better value for those who want a lot of gravitas for not too much money.

@@jaysaudiolab ... It was easily discerned that there was an excessive amount of energy above 5000 Hz along with a boost in the 70-100 Hz range. Listening to them, it sounded like someone had turned on the "loudness" button in a 70's vintage receiver, but with about half the effect instead of the entire range. Also amusing is a certain magazine has a RAVE review in the same issue in which a full page ad is on the back cover of these speakers. They are a decent sounding speaker, and some will like this sound. There are still a lot of options for under $3500 that are more accurate.
Tow them up! Put something under the front feet to angle them up a little. More open soundstage and less bright. 🎉
I would have added a couple of points. First, though the size of the 10" woofer was mentioned as being justified by its reduced excursion, you should have mentioned that the reason that this is a cause of concern is that the woofer cone acts as a waveguide for the tweeter. When the dimensions of the waveguide change rapidly (due to the woofer's vibration in normal operation), this will cause IM distortion with the output of the tweeter. The less that the waveguide's dimensions change, the less likely that this IM distortion will be large enough to become audible. (Andrew Jones did an interview with Stereophile where he discussed this point.)
Second, I would have gone into more depth about the advantages of a coaxial design -- namely, that the horizontal and vertical dispersion are both very well controlled if the woofer's and tweeter's dispersion characteristics are well matched in the crossover region--again, something that Jones discussed in Stereophile.. This is in contrast with a more conventional non-coaxial design, where the physical spacing between the drivers causes spatial comb filtering throughout the crossover region, making the listener's location more critical.

With so many great options in brands and technologies, turntables, belt drive, string drive, idler drive, direct drive, tonearms, cartridges, CD players and transporters, streamers, DACs, clocks, integrated amplifiers, preamps and power amps, phono preamps, monoblocks, stereo, multi channel, tubes, solid state, digital, hybrid, loudspeakers with dozens, maybe hundreds of completely different designs, architectures and solutions, cables, filters, power conditioners, perhaps there is a great great opportunity for more objective analysis of these combinations, what do you think?

As others said already, i don't see why one would choose this speaker over a Tannoy or Fyne Audio at this price point. I had both Tannoy and Fyne Audio before even though i never compared them directly to this speaker. I did like how vocals sound with MoFi though.

Jay, that intro, the B-roll, and that magnificent review, top to bottom, you have arrived, man, you have arrived. I would love to see you take on Dynaudio.
Just an idea, pick a couple of brands from a certain price point like this or have your paid subscribers do it as an add in bonus for membership. Have your membership on your main website pick the brands and between the brands at a given price point, pick the next speaker, again you could do this with a poll. No one is doing this, and I repeat, no one.
You have some of your paying website customers that you have appeared at their home pick the speaker, you approve of it and have that person on your website first and then the channel in a video telling why, it was picked.
Before you reveal the speaker on the channel, do another poll and announce the winning speaker. If possible, have the winner at your house for a listen.
The suspense in this would drive people to your channel and especially to your website for a chance to pick the speaker out of the categories and parameters that you set. Your viewership and membership would climb on both platforms, generating traffic to both.
I can see it now tune in to Jay's website for members to pick the next speaker that Jay will have in his home. The winner will appear with Jay and give details reasons why he or she picked the speaker that won.

For all those who are in the early stages of their Audiophile journey (less than ten years) You MUST take advantage of Jay's guidance and mentoring. You will save yourself a lot of wasted time, and more importantly money. Old audiophiles (like me, 63) in the 70's-90's had the advantage of going to numerous hi-fi stores to switch components around, do at home trials, trade in for discounts on new gear. That's gone now. This review of an affordable speaker, in my opinion, demonstrates Jay's excellent knowledge base. Personally, I'm not interested in Jay reviewing "affordable speakers or components", being there done that. There are many youtube reviewers who do so already. There's a reason why the most trusted reviewers in Stereophile and Absolute Sound are OLD, they've heard it all. It is extremely rare to find someone as young as Jay with his vast experience in all levels of hi-fi gear. Thank you Jay. Please keep pushing the limit. Believe me it will pay off sooner than later.

Nope. It's the fast rise off axis that causes the bright issue's. And it's not tube friendly with the impedance all over the map. It even dips to 3ohm at 2 different spots. One down in the bass region and one dead center. It's faulty if you ask me.

Put Rolling Stones "Love is Strong" (remastered) on. 😅 Find out if the Source Point speakers will handle it. Mine don't, that well but still, the song sounds great (except for the glassy top end). But my speakers souund great on "Brand New Car", another track on the same album. That isn't too bright but "Love is Strong" is. Some recordings have to be rendered bright (they are recorded bright) otherwise (if you compensate) everything else would sound muffly!
Excellent review. Nice that you can change your mind. It probably would help in terms of your recommendation of a speaker at this price level for you to review other speakers at around $4,000. The sonus faber sonetto IIIs for example. Sonus Faber is a brand that manages to go from very low price speakers to pretty high price speakers. And they are designed and built in Italy. I like that you try to avoid Chinese stuff. It is tough to avoid when buying gear that costs $4,000 or less. But worth the trouble I think.

Please review the “affordable” Outlaw 2160 “retro” receiver with a catalog of modern features. I’d be interested in seeing what you think of it as far as sound signature, power, and long list of features. It hasn’t been reviewed a lot, but has received positive reviews from those who have taken a look at. It was designed by long time audio industry professionals.
Look at the frequency response, it explains the brightness. I concur with your assessment but perhaps the weaknesses bother me more. Great job!

Everything I’ve heard and read about the intended design and setup is that you should be listening approx 10-15 degrees off axis, which should take the brightness a fair amount. It seems like the tested setup was not really in line with that, so that may explain the brightness experienced.
Also, assuming Chinese construction is inferior is frankly ignorant and off-putting.
Jay, a few people have the resources to compete with the exorbitant prices of your front end, cables, and naturally, budget constraints are of prime importance in selecting gear followed by the arduous task of balancing the room and the hardware characteristics commences then at this point enters the creativity in optimizing the performance of one's system. An old adage says that one man's meat is another one's poison does exist with audio's passionate lovers quest for the best of possibilities illustrating the subjectivity of it all, therefore, the evaluation of a "substandard "set of speaker is pertinent only to your gear and room but not with other folks audio assets.

When it comes to stands, I think they are beeing produced as we speak. They also will make a plate to have underneath the speaker if it is put sideways if used as a centerchannel (the sides are not straight slight curve).
I think theese speakers would be great in my hometheather/ musicroom. Identical speaker all the way, gives a seamless integration of the sound.
For the bottom end, I do see a couple of solutions in the back of your room🤪
Speakers of this type, do need a sub to really blow you away, and most speakers do benefit from a sub anyway.

Wow, I've never heard a review of a speaker powered by $500,000 worth of amplifiers.
After hearing about these point source & centrally placed concentric tweetered speakers, (which i.m.o. is a potentially brilliant design concept) ...i think I'll stick with my (near ancient) vintage Tannoy 15"inch Monitor Gold, Dual Concentric speakers, (made in 1969 according to the time- faded signed & dated test-pass cardboard labels still semi-stuck on their behinds) ...bought s/h & unheard in 1998'ish for £30 from a school's weekend yard sale (the stall guy said they once played BBC Radio 4 all day in their staff-room but theyve got neater Bose cubes & sub now)
...a mere 54 years old & still going strong, that's what I call engineering quality. I've far more recently made e/stats, Ribbons & hybrids of both & many boxes but the Tannoys remain my all-round favorites. (despite a slight woody cabinet coloration on louder listening, i never got round to internally brace them to rise the cab's resonance frequency into neglibility)

Mofi does make stands for them but couldn't figure out how to release them at the same time, probably due to unforseen supply chain and/or labor issues? I think these stands are STILL not available? Also, I think these speakers are so big and heavy that they almost demand bespoke, heavy-duty stands designed precisely for them in order to set them up optimally. Regardless, this thorough, fair review clearly outlines their performance envelope, except not having the bespoke stands makes me wonder if the speakers might have a bit more to give. The 866 demos with them sound pretty damn good to me, as someone else suggested, maybe they need a LONG break-in period?

This is the only video that really matters on this channel as the recorded sound demos even on other channels that uses ultra high end mic are close to useless really even when listened to on revealing wired headphones.

Now you should do a review on Wilson Duettes based on size(not price point as Wilson much more expensive)...then review Gershman Studio II's as they are at the same price point and size as the MoFi Sourcepoint 10's...if they cant beat the Gershman Studio II's at same price point, then they(MoFi) truly are not a good value for the money...but I dont see the point of comparing this speaker with 500K worth of equipment cause nobody else on the planet will ever that combo...that would be like testing a top of line Ferrari on the track with all weather tires from the Honda Accord.
Jay - Stereophile just reviewed these and the thing I found most interesting was the placement on the stands - sideways. Did you try this? I'm wondering what happens to the stage when they are on their side? The waveguide front makes me wonder if it doesn't get a bit wider?
