    Heard these at Axpona. They were driven by a HiFi Rose Integrated. Excellent imaging. Top end was detailed yet non fatiguing. Bottom end was extended and articulate. Easily the best $5000 speaker of the show. Might be the best speaker at this price on the market. It does everything well. This is a great review and outline of an outstanding product.

    Excellent review - in particular your description of the "sound" is very thorough and descriptive! This is the first review of a speaker that makes me consider upgrading my Tannoy Revolution XT-8F's. And I love my speakers. Also, because of my Tannoy's I'm a big fan of concentric drivers, like these with the midrange driver and tweeter. It's a great design for clarity in the imaging. Thanks!
    Edit: Oops, I didn't wait for the sound differential on different amps. Mine is already "warm" and might get that "too much of a good thing".

    Nice review. I heard these at Axpona and they were by far my favorites of the reasonably priced speakers. Now all the reviews are confirming what my ears heard. They might be slightly large for my space, but my space is larger than the room I heard them in so I ordered a pair and they arrive Friday. Hi Frank, I haven't had the chance to connect the Maria to the 888 but if I had to guess, the combination should be outstanding, since the Maria is very neutral with fantastic power and control. Re the distance, it's really hard to say as each room's acoustics is different. However, as the speakers are capable of bass power and extension, I would be careful not to place them too close

    Many people unfamiliar with Jarrett probably don't know that his solo piano concerts were improvisations. I first heard what I believe is Jarrett's first recording about 1972-73 when my university radio station played his album "Facing You" in it entirety without interruption (except for a brief time needed for the DJ to flip the record over). I was mesmerized when I heard it. The university radio station had a FM mono tube radio transmitter and in those days FM stereo had a lot more distortion than FM mono, and that mono FM tube radio station transmitter was amazing. I purchased a lot of Jarrett's records, and later most of his CD's, and now have access to all his ECM works on Tidal. I also have three of his classical works on CD's, since I am also a Bach and Baroque fan.

    Good design makes for a great speaker and this speaker proves that, not over built box, no over-the-top design to justify $$$$$ and up cost for a speaker and in most rooms these speakers would be all one would need to playback music. Crossover parts mean little, even when you use cheaper parts but you design the crossover correct that is what matters. This is a speaker for us who value good music, good reproduction at a sane price.

      yes - but reviewers would find themselves not getting any gear to review if they did that...what i'd like to see is reviewers framing the speaker into a picture of who would like the speaker and who would not. And always putting forward who would not like the speaker...cause no speaker pleases everybody. There are always tradeoffs and voicing opinions. Like saying 'the speaker doesn't have the heft to play orchestral works' or how about "these speakers won't get you the double bass in your favorite jazz trio's"? Even monitors differ substantially in how loud they go before they distort or just give up to. How about adding that to the review? Or here is another example: "While these Wilson Alexa's will bring home the bacon if you want to believe you are in row 12 at symphony hall a substantial portion of the cost is in the eye jewelry and stellar reputation of the company. If the quality of the sound is your only priority you can get that for 1/2 to 1/3 the cost...for example brand x over here..." lol ))

    • @Mark198d
      @Mark198d 27 дней назад +5

      For the most part, if a reviewer doesn't like a product, they will just send the product back and not film a review. It's easy to understand why. They don't want to sour their relationship with that specific manufacturer. And if other manufacturers see that you trash a product online, that would lessen the chances of receiving gear from them for review. It's not reasonable to expect these RUclips reviewers to buy gear with their own money just to review them. They rely on manufacturers to send them gear. Audio Excellence gave a lukewarm review to the Buchardt S400 MKII as mentioned above because they are a retailer and Buchardt sells direct to consumer so Adrian and co. don't lose anything if they give them a bad review.

    I like how my Monitor Audio speakers have both a front and rear port so you get to choose which one you block off. I get cleaner bass by using the front port so speakers like the 888 would likely be less clean than what I have.

      Usually the cure for that is move the speaker around and experiment with different distances away from the rear or side wall. Some speakers offer port plugs, which means a subwoofer might be needed to achieve low bass.

      Most people cannot afford the equipment, so just about all RUclips audiophile reviewers these days mention the recordings they use to draw some in some viewers. Almost all of the audiophile print magazines had extensive discussions and rankings of recordings, especially well-recorded ones.

      You don't need to rely on this review. Watch Erin's Audio Corner's review of the SP888. He used a $100k Klippel NFS to measure them and he says that overall this is the best speaker $5k and under that he has had in for review based on objective data. It has a neutral frequency response, good horizontal and vertical directivity, goes down to 30 Hz in room, and vanishingly low distortion figures. What else could you want in a speaker? Unless you don't like the appearance or something.

    These are equipped with the cheapest filter components on the market.
    But sadly, this is 'normal' in this price category, not unusual. So if you want better, you can upgrade the parts.
    See all the work from Gr research..

      You're likely correct. It's amazing AJ gets such good results from cheap parts! Danny's video on the SP8's was eye opening. For the price they should do better.
      More than likely the top end extension of the speaker would be improved.
