on Mac when erasing a USB flash drive, (micro) SD card, or external hard drive, you need to ensure that your account has "Read & Write" privilege to the drive.
@@aleksandrasnelkinas5953 I'm sure you already resolved this but may help others. I had the same issue: "Couldn't open device....". I closed all, shut down computer, booted back up to utilities. I noticed that it had basically been erased at this point, but not quite. I then attempted to erase mac again - voila! worked.
