World War II is the blackest period in the history of the twentieth century. 57 countries destroyed each other's populations for 6 years, resulting in more than 50 million dead. Whether in the end, the victory of one side over the other was the supremacy of light over darkness, or whether the lesser evil defeated the greater, we will not consider today, leaving it to more competent people.
We are interested in a more specific question concerning the role of organized crime in the final victory of the Allies. After all, there is a very widespread theory that the American Mafia was key to stopping German sabotage inside the United States and that the American Mafia helped the United States military connect with the Sicilian Mafia, which in turn provided huge support for the American landing in Sicily.
It is argued that it was because of the Sicilian Mafiosi that Operation Husky was so successful, that the Americans faced little resistance to the landing, and that their contribution of intelligence and subversion was key.
