The Marshall plan accelerated the continent's recovery but "only by a year or two according to the experts" (48:53). What "experts"? I would like to see where else the $500M in funding would have come from & what other country had the industrial base to supply all the finished goods. Look at how Eastern Europe languished until the demise of the USSR.

A wonderful channel to learn of history in its true color. What made the U.S. exceptional was how it treated the vanquished and defeated. It is not hard to imagine what would have become of Japan if the Soviet had taken it at the time. The world owed the great deal to some insightful American government officials and capable generals during and soon after the war for their peace and prosperities.

I didn’t know much about the Marshall Plan before, now I do. I imagine a similar scenario played out with Japan. What a concept! Rebuild the vanquished and the allied after a devastating world war. Cynics will ascribe the plan as to being only for the benefit of the USA. It was for sure, but it also threw a lifeline to the rest of the world, to rebuild for a better future. So, win/win? Yes. Very much so. America, keep your fatuous insipid culture. But thank you for your generosity and foresight.

Name another country in history that rebuilds its foes into economic powerhouses to be competed with. Instead of subjugating them.

As an American I hate the fact that they try to export our culture everywhere irregardless of local ethnic or religious population and I can tell you with Japan it was actually a lot more intensive I believe that Douglas MacArthur the Army General who was basically in command of the Pacific theater during World War II assumed the role of the I forget the term but the British had it for the person in India with basically supreme power and all decision-making Authority I think it starts with a V but I believe MacArthur had that job up until the 50s when the Korean War started and we were nearly kicked off the peninsula until he amazingly landed a huge Naval force behind the North Korean army add Incheon and basically cut off their supply lines. An amazing and very famous and still studied strategic and tactical win. But after that he tried to bait China into the war so that ultimately they could basically snuff out communism in China before it really had a chance to take hold if I remember correctly he answer to reporters question very China or eliminate the new regime and he basically said I dropped 20 atomic bombs one in each of their biggest 20 cities something to that effect and said this without any prior notice to Truman or Washington DC. To conclude that really was an amazing generation during World War II to have everything happen lose hundreds of thousands of people watch all of the atrocities and then turn around immediately after each side surrendered and basically hold their hand and rebuild the society, the political institutions and the economy I think we were 20% German at the time in the United States but is Japan especially after all of the atrocities to pows in the Kamikaze suicide missions in the aircraft carriers in battleships there was a lot of hatred and animosity. But they but all into what we were saying and selling and we're 100% on board with working with us to rebuild their country. Can't say the same about Iraq or Afghanistan... they saw us as Intruders or Invaders or occupiers not partners

40 years it was good to come to America but then 9/11 happened everything change for the worse jobs don't pay well rent is too much and because of rent being too much now there's a lot of homeless people and not only in one state it's all the states and then the government rather helps immigrants coming in instead of helping his own people that are homeless it doesn't make any sense

So it remained till 1990 backward as Russia was until the wall fell and Europe was free again 😢
Now again face the same concern in Ukraine ,
You backed the wrong side , the Marshal plan was to make amends for this folly we are all paying the price of this folly
